Unable to boot into recovery and boot android - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know why it happened, it was caused by me as I wiped the factory reset without cleaning the cache. As every rom, kernel and Android version change configuration is unique.
Unfortunately, usually I'd boot into recovery and re-flash it there. But when I do, the CWM/recovery logo appears for a second and then continues to boot forever. Not in a boot loop, just stuck at boot. I've tried installing a different recovery, no change. It may be skipping that as it's stuck in first boot after a flash.
Odin3 will find my phone, but it doesn't seem to support zip files like CWM does.
Is there any way I can flash a rom, clean cache or anything, without the recovery?
Sorry for bolding my text, I know how tiresome some people find reading.

Odin recognizes. tar files not the zip files... Just download . tar file for your recovery and then flash it via Odin.. read a guide for that before doing that...

Download this: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=26624 . Put the phone in Download mode, connect it via USB, add the firmware in the PDA section and hit start

Unfortunately recovery doesn't always seem to work these days, I suspect it ignores recovery on first boot.

Sweet as, it's unbricked now.

I had similar experience
Was on devil kernel, reformatted to f2fs all workng.
Tried dual boot, was in 2nd rom
The internal storage was showing no free space, checked and I was only using 3G of the 12
System was not happy
Dropped into recovery and formatted /intsd
Recovery rebooted automatically and would not do anything,
Reboot, entered recovery, rebooted, etc,etc
Dropped into download, Odin flashed cwm recovery,
Formatted partitions back to ext4, restored nandroid.
All back to normal....
Leaving f2fs alone for now

[Q] Heimdall Restore to Stock - Stuck on Samsung

So I followed the instructions and ReadMe and flashed everything at once on Heimdall Frontend. Now the phone is stuck on the Samsung loading screen, and trying to get into recovery is no good as it just sits on the samsung screen. The only thing I did not flash was the PIT as when I selected it it turned the start gray.
What is causing this??
Running Windows 7 on computer, and trying to flash the dl01 package that was opened into individual files.
Anybody know?
Posting this in two different sections was necessary?
If it's a question, which this clearly is, it goes in the Fascinate Q&A.
I understand it's in the Q&A now...but now there are two of the same thread.
I tried to delete, can someone else delete the other one. I didnt notice the Q and A section at the time.
tried reflashing seperate parts such as kernel factoryfs recovery but still hangs on samsung screen. Cannot get into recovery as well I have tried holding both volumes and power and then releasing power but still sits on samsung logo.
Why not just use download mode and use Odin?
when I try odin it hangs on recovery, I have tried now doing it through odin and it will hang on recovery when doing the complete package and hang on factoryffs when doing it individually.
Flashed clockwork recovery now it keeps booting and rebooting and saying movi_check start and then it goes through wiping data cache and everything fails.

When I flash the other recovery it just hangs on the samsung logo screen...

These are the steps to restore to stock from any ROM/Kernel, Rooted/Unrooted, etc...
Download: T959UVJFD.tar (PDA), Odin3.rar, s1_odin_20100512.rar (PIT) and samsung drivers
Linky for downloads: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&page=59
Extract: s1_odin_20100512.rar pit file
Extract ODIN3.rar
Open Odin3_v1.0.exe
connect USB to phone
Go to Download mode. The phone should show up in ODIN. If not reboot and try download mode again. Select PDA and PIT file. I selected re-partition checkbox. Click start button.
My phone had Froyo 2.2 custom Rom (Trigger) and Kernel Overstock, was rooted and had clockwork. Now I have Eclair 2.1 update1 with all stock apps and icons.

[Q] I9100 CAN'T BOOT after Custome ROM update - Bricked

Hi guys, really need your help!!! Please don't ban, really desperate here"""
Been using Custom ROMs since Omnia HD. Loved the work of cookers, never had problems, ODIN is just so easy.
Four days ago, tried to flash I9100 from Lite'ning v5 to 6.1. So, as recommended I wiped cach with CWM, and then done proper FORMAT.
Once I pressed it, format started but didn't finish - the phone restarted, and continued to restart - stuck with boot "S" animation - so can't boot into system.
Then, tried as suggested to install VANILA latest firmware - tried it - didn't work. Keeps freezing in the middle of the process in ODIN - or - it says FAILED. Now, i can't use CWM - if I press Volume UP +HOME+POWER, i get "Mobile phone with yellow Triangle with PC signs" - left to the right.
Updating to the VANILA software doesn't work, so as Lite'ning V6, or any other versions of it. Without CWM, i can't boot from SD Card to other cooked roms, so please, any ideas will be MUCH APPRECIATED !!!

UPDATE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you all for your help !!!!!!!
Problem solved thanks to HotlipsH - I flashed the firmware he suggested and it worked !!!!!!!!!!!!!
On another note, my USB port is malfunctioning - it only works if bent at a specific angle. In order to give the phone for repair as it's still less then 3 month old, I need to get rid of manual firmware update counter (currently at 4). Can someone recommend a method to bring it back under warranty?
I am with T-Mobile contract in the UK, London. Thank you all again very much !!!! Love this forum ;']
Try flashing a stock rom with Odin. As a second try stock rom with EXT4.pit file and Re-Partition option (You MUST have a pit file to use Re-Partition)
As long as the phone is detected in Odin your not bricked.
Why did you do a format??
Thank you guys for your advice.
First of all, I formatted the phone, so that there won't be any of the apps installed, since it felt slower, so I wanted to reinstall only the ones I actually use.
Secondly, I did try to flash stock ROM with ODIN (but I am not sure if it was the stock one, or just one of the latest VANILA). It does recognise the phone, but when I flash with stock, it either freezes in the middle (waited for over 20min), or finishes with "completed - success 0 - failed - 1", and then when I reboot, it is stuck on the screen ""Mobile phone with yellow Triangle with PC signs" - left to the right. "
Any idea?
Would you like to define proper format ?? and how .

What happened in a nutshell:
1) Via CWM, I wiped the cache (Dalvik and other - which are suggested by Lite'ning FAQ prior to upgrade).
2) Went to phones options and selected Format USB Storage (to get rid of all installed apps)
3) Once I clicked the Format in options, the phone restarted, and I could see Green Android figure with the white box - the screen stayed like is without changes for over 30min, so I restarted the phone.
4) Once the phone restarted, it stayed in Bootloop. It got to the "S" screen, and then restarts again to the same screen - over and over.
5) At this point, I could connect to Restore and Download Modes.
6) Then, I put it to Download Mode (Volume Down+Home+Power buttons), and and tried flashing to newest Lite'ning MOD V6 (from previously installed V5 prior to cache wipe and format) - no results - the phone screen stays in Download Mode and no progress details in ODIN (v1.85).
7) Tried flashing to Stock ROM, but I am not sure which one I tried, but it was the latest I could find - it had many files, I Googled and appropriately placed them (modem, pit, etc.) - as a result, phone screen remained on Download Mode screen with no changes, and on the PC (Win 7 x64) the ODIN recognised the phone (yellow square) and started the process but then froze mid-way - I waited fro 20min - nothing happened.
8) Disconnected USB cable, took out battery for 2min, and tried to flash other custom ROM from SD Card - but then, I couldn't log into recovery Mode any longer - by pressing Volume Up+Home+Power buttons, I only get "Mobile phone with yellow Triangle with PC signs" - left to the right. When I tried to reboot, then its the same screen. The Download Mode works though, and ODIN detect why phone.
I suspect that when I wiped cache with CWM, it deleted saved Stock ROM or kernels (no clue what it is), and now I am afraid to give to service since you can see in Download mode that the firmware was manually updated 4 times, so it voids manufactures warranty in the UK, at least.
Very worried, any ideas?
Dont think USB storage is the phone ??
Tried flashing to Stock ROM, but I am not sure which one I tried, but it was the latest I could find - it had many files
Stock rom is usually a single tar file .
Is recovery mode working ??
You can go to mounts and storage and format system data and sd card then flash stock rom single tar file via Odin .

If you can still enter Clockworkmod recovery I would suggest that you enter Mounts and Storage Menu: -mount USB storage and hook your phone up to the PC to see the state of your internal fat32 sdcard.
If you can see the sdcard (might be empty) at about 12GB total size you know your sdcard is OK and you might be able to drag ROM/Kernel files onto it through Windows and then apply update/install zip through CWM Recovery.
If the sdcard partition does not mount proper you might be able to format it as a fat32 device through Windows and then try flashing a STOCK ROM through Odin with or without Re-Partition (need ext4.pit for re-partition).
Use THIS guide to propper flash through Odin.
I dont know where in the world you are but if your European try THIS ROM, it's the stock MultiCSC XWKF3

I cannot get to CWM, so can't do the first part of your suggestion.
I am based in the UK and got the phone in London via T-Mobile contract. I will try to flash via ODIN once I ma back home from work - already forgot how to use my old good undestructable Nokia 6300.
Will try and update status
Make sure that the rom you're flashing is not corrupted (I mean files). Check hash of the files .
If you can get into download mode (volume down, home, power) when phone is turned off, flash with odin, if not you may need a jig to get you into download mode.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
If the SGS2 cannot go into download mode, using a usb jig won't do anything.
The only reason why one cannot go into download is because the boot loader is damaged. Once the boot loader is damaged, the usb jig is not going to rebuild it.
Anyways, he can go into boot loader (download mode), and he can boot into clockwork recovery. So his system partition is corrupted. He need to make sure KIES is not running, double check in TASK MANAGER. If KIES is not running, then double check the tar file to see if it is corrupted or incomplete.
Use 7-zip to extract the tar file, if it cannot be extracted, the download was not completed or the tar file is damaged.

Odining back to stock - phone doesn't boot

So my vibrant won't boot up. I've tried odining it back to stock, and no matter what I do, it will almost get to the galaxy S screen (freezes as it is forming the S). Download mode and recovery mode both work.
Pull the battery, boot into recovery and wipe factory reset, wipe cache, and advanced->wipe Dalvik. The reboot. Will take longer b/c it has to rebuild Dalvik but it should work out fine. I had the same thing happen the two nights ago coming off ICS.
Don't forger you won't have CWM and it isn't in the market for 2.1 anymore. You can download it from my signature. Put Update.zip in internal and hit reinstall packages twice (that is if you want flash or restore).
Are you able to "Reinstall Packages" from recovery or does that fail?
Did you check re-partition when converting to stock?
You may have corrupted your internal SD

The reinstall packages fails. It says: "can't open /sdcard/update.zip" (no such file or directory).

I don't have the option of wiping the Dalvik in recovery. I think its because it went back to the default "Android system recovery <2e>"
I tried wiping everything, but when it boots, it goes to the vibrant screen, then to the tmobile screen (the boot sound works), but then, the screen turns black and it goes back to the vibrant screen again (and it just keeps looping).
Maybe try ka7 or kb5 instead of jfd? Investigate /mnt/efs and the copies in /sdcard/backup? Don't know much about eds, might be worth a look. Reflash SBL for good measure?

Go to the dev section and download the Toolbox. It is stickied. It has drivers, Odin and the Pit/Tar files to get you back to stock. Get back into download mode and re-run Odin with those files.
Don't forget that you don't have to see the DL mode on your screen as long as the COM box is yellow in Odin.
Also check out this thread.

I tried using the toolbox and reflashing the stock rom, but it just gets to the t-mobile "stick together" screen, then screen turn black, then it goes to the battery charging screen.
If you're doing Odin right, with a good rom and pit file, and still have trouble, I guess you could flash the SBL. I had a rom flash (via zipfile) do something unknown which made it nearly impossible to get into download mode. Once I did, I flashed the SBL and I was fine. No idea what happened. I even had a nandroid backup, not a restore, hose my phone once. When the other Phone Gods turn against you, Odin is your friend.

But I can get into download mode. And which sbl should I flash?
Probably the closest-to-stock Froyo SBL you can find.
I'm using a GB SBL from this thread, and he has Froyo also:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117990
I got stuck in this loop a few months back flashing back to stock from CM7 when Odin froze.
I could get to Download Mode and Stock recovery but had the same error when attempting to "Reinstall Packages" from recovery. The internal SD partition had corrupted.
I flashed Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo with Odin, which fixed the Internal SD.
If you follow the write up on unbricking when you have the little triangle and phone error on your screen it will get you out of this one.
Your bootloaders are not the issue here. 2e Recovery isn't seeing the Internal SD Card and that it what is causing the hangup on boot.
Yeah, probably just flashing a decent kernel would fix you up, but unless you can find an Odin kernel file, you need to do the whole rom.
BTW, with Linux, you can use
tar -tf <rom file> if you want to see what's in a rom.
You can download the Odin flashable Overstock Kernel which contains the red recovery and flash it. That would give you the ability to format the internal SD and then Mount it to your PC through recovery and copy a Rom over to flash.
Otherwise the Unbrickable Froyo I mentioned before will also work.
The only thing you can do when stuck in a boot-loop, if the previous suggestions don't work, is to just reflash it. You can flash back to stock easily using Heimdall One-Click. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278683
We're missing some info here. What ROM were you using before you flashed back to stock? Did you use a pit file in addition to the pda file in ODIN?
If you were using an ICS (android 4.0.x), flashing back to stock and didn't use a stock pit in addition to stock pda, it would definetly be giving you problems. ICS uses a different partition scheme then does stock (which is on android 2.1). The pit file tells odin how to partition your phone. If you're flashing from Froyo, then this should not be relevant as it uses same partition scheme as stock.

Just bricked a S5830i

Hi!
This afternoon I bricked my sister-in-law's phone. I download all the stuff (CWM recovery, Odin images, etc) all from the development forum.
Let me explain, in the first try I did a factory reset, then flashed a custom ROM, then the GAPPS and phone stuck at Samsung's logo.
Ok, so I flashed again Odin's image, rebooted again into recovery and tried to flash again. This time recovery can't access into internal storage, and I could read the message (for example when I do a simple wipe):
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/stl11.
Ok, so I decided to go to download mode again to reflash Odin's factory image and..... now I can't access to download mode. Screen is on, but black and phone doesn't boot.
I'm sure something went wrong, but Odin and recovery don't show me any weird message before the brick.
Now, I can only access to stock recovery,.
Any chance to reborn the phone? Is there any flasheable zip or something to restore internal partitions from recovery?
Thank you

Your phone is still probably entering download mode just without the warning message which has been deleted (read about this somewhere) just use volume+ on the black screen and connect to computer and see if it works...
Btw you were meant top install the ROM then RESTART then enter recovery again then GApps
If I've helped please press Thanks

Just follow this dude It's easy

[Q] Phone won't boot, can access download and recovery mode.

Ok there, guys.
Before I start, yes I'm an idiot, yes I'm a huge noob, no I don't know what I'm doing.
Basically, I have a SGS2 and I was trying to install Cyanogenmod 10.1.
I used Heimdall to (flash?) install ClockworkMod Recovery and it worked.
I realised that I hadn't put the Cyanogenmod .zip on my phone before I installed CWM.
I got up to rebooting my phone so I could transfer the zip but after the Galaxy splash screen nothing happened.
The screen just stays black and doesn't do anything.
I can access Download and Recovery mode so that's good.
I only have access to a Mac at the moment so I have to use the Heimdall command line.
If anybody could help it would be great, thanks!

Flash a stock rom and start from scratch. Get stock rom file from xda or sammobile (NOT A 4.0.4 ics rom tho.) flash via odin/Heimdall in download mode. it will boot up when done turn it off and reboot to recovery and do full wipe. redo your flash with missing .zip.
good luck

I flashed the phone, it automatically rebooted, when the Samsung logo came up I took out the battery, went to recovery mode, wiped cache and full wipe, hit reboot and now it just stays on the Samsung logo, pulsing blue and what not.
I also did the same thing and instead of taking out the battery I just left it in there after the first reboot and the same thing happened.
How can I fix this?
Hum....I9100?
