[Q] Unable To Flash CM11 Nightly (Boot Loop) Using TWRP - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys, I'm a long time lurker of these forums but this will be my first post in a couple years... Lol. I did some searches both on Google and on the XDA forums and although I found some helpful information, I'd really like a definitive answer for this particular problem instance.
I have an unlocked bootloader using TWRP recovery, per the sources listed on this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518211).
After doing a factory reset/wiping the Delvik Cash & Data, I install the CM11 ROM via TWRP. TWRP reports that the install was a success, however after rebooting (whether or not I wipe the Delvik/Cache again) I get stuck in a boot loop in which the HTC logo appears but nothing more.
Luckily I backed up my stock ROM prior to attempting this install, so for now I'm still sitting on 4.1.1 HTC JellyBean. If anyone has any help though I would GREATLY appreciate it, I'd really love to get KitKat on this phone.

Are you s-on? If so that is the issue. What I did when I was s-on was I'd flash the rom, let it bootloop, manually reboot into recovery, reflash without wipe. Bit of a PITA. S-off is so much easier.

Thank you very much for your response, and yes I do currently have S-On. I'm looking into methods of removing it right now.
If you or anyone else happen to know a good, working method for 4.1.1 and Firmware 3.17.651 firmware I'd really appreciate it. This is currently the guide I'm looking at, but I would appreciate one with a bit more explanation or something confirmed on my firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163013).
Once again though, thank you very much for identifying where my problem was!
EDIT: Here are some newer sources I've found which should work with the 3.17 firmware (http://www.pocketables.com/2013/10/3-17-651-4-s-method-works-htc-evo-4g-lte.html) (http://rumrunner.us/instructions/)

I used rumrunner on my phone and a friends, both were HBOOT 2.09, also firewater worked on HBOOT 2.10 for another friend. They are pretty self explanatory. Rumrunner is easier, don't need to use adb commands to get it started. Make sure you have HTC sync removed from your computer, set supersu default to grant, and disable your anti virus software, some have said they had to remove it completely. But if rumrunner doesn't work I'd try firewater. The instruction for firewater are on the site.

It's rather disheartening how much harder it is to root this HTC phone than it was to root my S3. Oh well!

From my own personal experience running Windows 7 x64 I had to actually uninstall Security Essentials, disable the firewall and run soju.exe as administrator for rumrunner to work, took me a few days to figure that out. Good luck. :good:

rezound freezes at 4g lte screen

I am the cause of this problem, and hope someone can help to extricate me.
I bought my Rezound in April, excited that ICS was coming. I soon found the leaked ICS 4.0.3/Sense 3.6 and installed the leak, and have been (largely) happily enjoying it. There have been some small issues, and when I read that Verizon was finally sending ICS out to the Rezound, I checked and found that I couldn't get it unless my phone was put back to GB. That's when the problem started.
I've tried numerous ROMs, but really don't know what I'm doing, and after almost 20 hours of reading the various posts and searches, am no farther to a resolution than where I started yesterday.
The phone, no matter what I try to load, boots fine until it hits the 4G LTE screen and then freezes. Here's the HBOOT/FASTBOOT screen:

Someone more knowledgeable may correct me, but HBOOT 2.27 & 2.22 radios are the newest version. So you're already upgraded to the newest stuff. Try installing an AOSP or ICS ROM and see if that works.
I made progress?

It's easy.... if you like AOSP/CM9, I'd recommend the "le n00b" ROM in the dev section. If you like Sense 3.6, try Vigor360. If you like Sense 4, I really liked ViperRom. Just go to the OP of any thread for those, download the newest version to a PC or onto your SD card.
Then, go check out Scotty's noob friendly guide to rooting on AndroidForums (there might be an equivelent thread here, but I used this guide). I recommend using Amon Ra as your recovery, which is linked toward the top of the first post.

if you want to go aosp you will need to s-off the phone to get there.
but you are on the latest update. you can only run roms built off the global ruu such as:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852119
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1860632
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855605
to flash said roms you will need to htc dev unlock and then flash a recovery and then you can do any of the three roms above. if you want to be on a rom that is build off an older release you will need to s-off the phone.

Thanks a bunch. I've opened Scotty's guide to read next, and have downloaded Amon Ra (recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img.zip). I've looked up some comparisons between Sense 3 & 4, which should help me make an informed decision. Thanks again for the guidance and suggestions.

I would use hasoons toolkit to unlock and install amon ra. The 4.03.605.2 RUU runs smooth and quick.

Unfortunately, Scotty's guide won't work for me, as its unlock with htcdev section requires the Rezound to connect to my PC via usb, but the phone's somewhat bricked, locking up at the 4G LTE screen and won't connect.
I would surely appreciate other suggestions. Plemelin recommended hasoons toolkit, and I will look at it now.

For Scotty's guide, you're clearly on the HTC Unlock stage, maybe you should find the latest RUU and flash that? It'll have all parts of the phone's system (ROM, bootloader, recovery, radios, etc), so you'll have a clean phone (meaning all data will be wiped), and all the different pieces will work together and you should be able to boot into the stock ROM, then follow the guide from there starting with the HTC unlock. I think where you were at in post #1, you had all the ICS/global firmware but were trying to boot a gingerbread ROM which will fail every time. If you use an RUU, everything will be in sync.

Nice, that's the original version which started this journey. I had downloaded it prior to starting all this, and messed up my Rezound by not doing it correctly. Now it's the one which (finally) worked. I don't know how it worked, unfortunately, as it didn't work exactly like Scotty told me it would, and the first few times I tried to install it were unsuccessful also.
Thanks again.
It's alive!
Thank you all for your help. Your replies encouraged me and directed me toward the solution.
Scotty's guide worked, although not exactly like it said it would. I now have the version I originally wanted, and it all works, except for the SU.
I installed CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip per Scotty, but I have don't have the SU ability. Undoubtedly did something wrong.
Thanks again.

If you're using SU, then open up the app by going into the app drawer and see if there's a way for you to "update the binary". The binary is the meat and bones of the superuser app, and for some reason it's not working well out of the box on some roms, and you need to update it to get it working.

Thanks everyone

I was pretty sure that I had screwed my EVO beyond my ability to recover it. It's pretty noob level stuff, but I haven't been root since my OG EVO - and things were simpler then. Using the WinDroid tool I was able to easily unlock, twrp, and superuser my phone. Moonshine failed 30 or 40 times, so I was not able to achieve S-OFF, but I flashed an AOSP rom anyway and poof - screwed up my phone. I spent the entire day in TWRP / fastboot /flashing stock **** to get my phone working again. At one point in the process I lost the ability to mount usb so I was particularly screwed at that point. I eventually gave in and formated sdcard, then was able to push a stock rom, flashed that a few times, and also a superuser.zip and eventually I was back to running stock 3.17. I've learned something today - I think I'm better off just waiting until December when we get 4.3 and Sense 5 from HTC... Gah - what a day.
Anyway, thank you to the innumerable posts that pointed to the Don't Pank Q&A and elsewhere on the forums. Searching + reading = solution, most of the time. Also, if you (noob to semi-noob) have already OTA updated to 3.17 don't try to S-OFF until a developer has solved this problem, because you are (probably) going to screw it up (and fail).
:good:

Has anyone on 3.17 tried DirtyRacun + BabyRacun for S-OFF? Everyone is saying Moonshine doesn't work, but if BabyRacun works, S-OFF would still be possible using any of the 3 existing methods.

Maybe if I get bored, I'll experiment with it.
And down the rabbit hole I go . . .
Got BabyRacun to work (after a hex edit to the file) to downgrade my mainver to 3.15.651.16, but the 3.15 RUU won't run. So . . .
I'm going to flash the 3.15 ROM manually through fastboot (boot.img & system.img) and then try DirtyRacun to see if it works. If that doesn't, I may try the 3.15 firmware package and see if that helps.
Alright, so here's where I am. I was able to downgrade my firmware successfully using the 3.16 extended firmware zip from Haus, and now it's just a matter of flashing 3.16 stock rooted so I can Moonshine. At least I proved it could be done, even if it wasn't easy. I believe Moonshine is going to be updated for it to work with 3.17 anyway, so this may have just been an opportunity for me to be reminded of all the crazy stuff I used to do to try and get S-OFF to work, lol.

But you still do not effectively have S-OFF with 3.17, right? I think you can flash the 3.17 radios separately, though, but I think there might be other stability fixes to sense that you would be lacking. Thanks for experimenting though.

Huh? Yes, I have S-OFF. What would I be lacking? I re-updated to the 3.17 firmware after S-OFF, and then flashed the 3.17 stock rooted. What fixes would I be missing?
At any rate, I'm running CM10.2 anyway.

No, flashing a ROM won't put you back S-on. The fact is that Captain was able to find a way to downgrade from 3.17 S-on and still get S-off, which was the ultimate goal in his experiment. Much like back when people downgraded from Hboot 1.15 or 1.19 and used Lazy Panda to gain S-off prior to the Dirty Racun method being available.

Trying to S-Off but doesn't work! HBoot 2.49

I want to S-Off my One Max (international) and change unlocked to lock, remove the tempered word because fingerprint scanner is not working.
Tried rumrunner doesn't work, it ask me to flash compatible kernel (what? I'm just using a stock ROM with root) and firewater doesn't work too!
Spending my whole night fixing it :crying: Any solution?
compatible driver, no htc software, checked debugging, running latest SuperSU. Is it because of not compatible with HBoot 2.49?

I have had tried 3 different tools. rumrunner, firewater and revone.
Nothing was able to get S-OFF with hboot 2.49.
Tampered and Unlocked - but that's it.
Currently I'm running on Windows 8.1.
Has someone better results with hboot 2.49?
I'm having the same issue.
My VZW updated as soon as I opened it up out of the box and I let the update run not knowing the issues i'd run into.
I'm on hboot 2.49. 4.4.2.
I can get root with weaksauce, but for some reason the firewater temproot wasn't working for me. I've tried rumrunner (both universal and specific version), and firewater. No dice.
I'm on hboot 2.49 gsm
firewater workes great with it

I have had no chance. Do you have an international device?
If yes can you explain how you have done this?
I have seen that the hboot 2.49.000 will also update the TZ partition. And I guess there is the problem why it will not work. I have had used almost every S-OFF tool for the OneMax but nothing will run to the end.

I have seen that the hboot 2.49.000 will also update the TZ partition. And I guess there is the problem why it will not work. I have had used almost every S-OFF tool for the OneMax but nothing will run to the end.

I have had tried 3 different tools. rumrunner, firewater and revone.
Nothing was able to get S-OFF with hboot 2.49.
Tampered and Unlocked - but that's it.
Currently I'm running on Windows 8.1.
Has someone better results with hboot 2.49?

I am having the EXACT same issue as you. I am running HBOOT 2.49 on a stock, factory locked, unrooted, odexed Verizon HTC One Max.
For the life of me, I cant achieve S-OFF regardless of everything I have tried, including the tools you listed above (rumrunner, firewater and revone). I am at the point of giving up, I have spent 2 days trying to figure it out with no success. it must be an incompatibility of these tools with the 2.49 HBOOT firmware. I am eagerly waiting for a developer to give me a working solution.
There is a thread at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765383 where developer Mrt69 CLAIMS to have an S-OFF & superuser package that will work on this version of HBOOT, but his link for S-OFF package just takes me to dating sites and other random malware/garbage, not the package itself. so I have been unable to test. let me know if you have any luck.
I am also running windows 8.1 Pro, but have also tried it under Windows 7 with the exact same problems.

The link works for me and I'm stuck just like you, do you need the files? If so I can send them to you.
The more brains involved on this the better!

That would be fantastic if you could send it to me. I can't get that link to work. You want me to provide you with an email address? How large is the package?

[Q] Need help with S-Off

Ok, so it July 15 2014. I've come to terms that this phone is old, but i recently picked one up for cheap in the hopes to replace my broken M7. unknowingly, my phone updated it's firmware to 3.17.651.5 and the Hboot is already at 2.09. I have dug through guides, upon guides in hopes of getting this damn thing S-off but i see Barely the Slightest mention of 3.17 anywhere. So as of today, does anyone know what my best option is for S-off? I am at a lost..I am close to just using an RUU i found that apparently is android 4.3 and Sense 5 and not bothering to s-off.

Try rumrunner or firewater. If neither work, relock your bootloader, run the ruu then use firewater again.

My Hboot guide specifically mentions both Rumrunner & Firewater for Hboot 2.09/software version 3.17 One of those exploits should work just fine:thumbup:

Here's what I did just 2 days ago to successfully get the EVO 4G LTE 3.17.651.5 bootloader unlocked (rooted), S-Off, and firmware upgraded.
1) Used HTCDev.com to unlock the bootloader.
2) Installed TWRP 2.7.0.1b Recovery and SuperSU
2) Used Rumrunner to gain S-Off (make sure you have SuperSU installed and grant permission to Rumrunner as it asks or it will fail. This can be a little tricky and was a frustrating problem until I came across this thread to get S-Off --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49567833&postcount=73
This helped also. I read every page. --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50112361&postcount=1
Good Luck!
The recovery ending with the letter B is for the new partition layout. If they're on the old layout they can't use that version of TWRP. I know you updated to the new layout so that version is correct for you.

Thanks Magnum_Enforcer,
I actually loaded and used that version (2.7.0.1b) of TWRP just after I picked up the phone from Sprint last week and it worked fine on the old partition layout. After you helped me get the RUU flashed I reflashed it and seems to work just the same on the new partition scheme. I may be wrong (I've read so many pages on the forum lately) but I believe that 2.7.0.1b was created/modified by Captain_Throwback to work with the new memory partitioning while keeping compatibility with old memory partitions.

So i tried this method and was unable to get root at all. one i tried to get root with TWRP my phone just went into boot loops. I'm gping to try the sense 5 ruu. I can't use any other one
OK, so i got the newest RUU and am now on the Sense 5 platform, i have used the Modded TWRP and achieved SU. from there i noticed that my Hboot is now 2.10. Knowing this, which is the best option for S-off or am i stuck?
Hboot: 2.10
Software: 4.13.651.4
Recovery: TWRP 2.7.1.0b
Super user: Yes
Bootloader HTC Dev Unlocked
Try Rumrunner or Firewater. Both are known to work on Hboot 2.10. Links to both exploits can be found in the top link in my sig.

I found this post and was finally able to achieve S-Off using Rumrunner with the instructions provided by Strat911 (post #803) http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...ng-dummies-complete-guide-17.html#post6554970
I was getting the same error as Strat911 (scroll up in the thread to post #801) until he figured it out. I found that opening SuperSU and going to Settings and changing Default access from Prompt to Grant fixed the problem as Rumrunner was being denied superuser permission during the process. Just read the thread I linked (start at post #801) and if that's the issue you are having change that setting in SuperSU and you should get S-Off.
Good Luck!
EDIT: Looks like you got it fixed with Firewater while I was typing up my reply. Congrats on getting S-OFF !!!

HELP* TWRP 2.7.0.1 says theres no op...

my problem is i just updated to twrp 2.7.0.1 and no everytime i exit the recovery it says theres no op or superuser installed. its funny cus i do and it boots up normal. please help me its annoying and scary at the same time thanks. on htc evo 4g lte rooted and unlocked s-on with meanbean 3.9. i wanted to add i just tried to flash viper rom and it has the aroma installer 2.0 and says the kernal wasnt installed. so im basically stuck on meanbean.
Meanbean is one of the only ROMs you can flash s-on without fastboot flashing the kernel separately through the bootloader.
S-on is doing what it's supposed to. Meanbean somehow maintained its HTC signature, so the phone doesn't know that it's supposed to try to fix it.
Get s-off. Also consider running the ruu to update to the new partition layout.

thank you i actually just fixed it. i had to downgrade trwp. twrp2 was bad. maybe a bad dl. i know i have to flash the boot.img in fb while s-on. the weird thing was i couldnt make a backup or even mount via twrp. so i figured that was it. now you say to get s-off, well i need help with that. i have hboot 2.9 (0830) and i tried moonshines s-off and it didnt work it always says adb connection failed and yes usb debugging was enabled. what would you suggest to get s-off on my htc evo 4g lte. ive searched and read. alot of programs only use linux. im on win 7 and live cd was a pain. if you could help with that i would appreciate it.

You can try Firewater for Hboot 2.09.
I'd recommend running the newest RUU to update to 2.10, then unlocking, rooting and running rumrunner. That seems to be the way most people are getting s-off nowadays without running into hassles (you'll find a lot of threads where people on 2.09 and such having random issues trying to gain s-off, although it is very doable)
