Adding on here you will need to use something such as ApkMultiTool to decompile your apk file then load the XML file. I'm guessing your were using something such as 7-zip to extract the apk file contents which is not the same as decompiling with a proper apk decompiling tool.

As previously mentioned you will need to use a apk tool such as this one, rather then 7-zip to decompile the apk's containing XML files. Once you have de-compiled the apk you will see the de-compiled apk in an output folder which you can then find the XML's you want to edit using Notepad++. Once you have made the changes that you want to, save the XML file as you would another file in Notepad++. Then go back to the apk tool you used and re-compile your apk file, if it's a non-system app make sure to sign the app as well. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Edit Concat Picture

Hi..
I wanted to change the contact images in the framework-res. I've done so far, but when I folded the new framework-res with the mod-tool push, then that too, but he shows me the new image does not accumulate in handy.
I can do or what?
My steps:
1. I replace the corresponding image (PNG format) with 7zip
2. im sending the new framework-res or contact.apk via adb mask controller on my x10i
3. reboot
4. im showing in contacts and the image ist the same as before
looking like a rat i handle it?
"Title: Edit Contact Picture"
you should edit "contacts.apk" located in "/system/app" not "framework-res.apk"

Have you resigned the apk?

no, like I do that?
Google it. But you will need the Android SDK or at least latest JDK and there is a script somewhere here on XDA called autosign or something like that. You will need to install those than remove the meta-inf from the modified apk put the apk file in the folder for autosign (make sure theres only one apk in the folder) then run autosign and it will create a new apk called your_signed_apk then rename it and push back to your phone.
Search "resigning apk files" and read. Theres an old thread somewhere for changing app icons i think that has everything you need to know.

System apps don't need to be signed. If you look in framework-res.apk, there's no META-INF directory.
Are you sure you replaced the framework-res.apk file correctly? I posted some info about framework-res.apk here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11193663#post11193663
As always, back up with xRecovery before messing around with framework-res.apk. One mistake and you won't be able to boot.
I think most stock apps actually might not need to be signed, now that i think about it though. You might just need to make sure you remove the unmodified app first (copy it somewhere first for a backup) and then manually put the apk in, set permissions correctly and then reboot. This apk signing trick allows you to modify any app to change shortcut icons or customize anything you want and reinstall it correctly so it should come in handy anyways.

Install 7 Zip Open Archive and replace PNGs you want to change. Check for same resolution specially for files with extention .9.png they create mess if replaced improperly.
For convenience I suggest using 7Zip extract the apk. Go to folders check pngs replace as your requirement and then finally select all the folders you got after modding open archive with 7zip and drag files. It will ask to copy your files or not. Select yes. your apk is done
Thanks both of you....

Just open the original .apk in 7-Zip, find the files, delete them and then put your new ones in. The have to be exactly the same name. You don't need to decode the apk or resign it.
Some apks won't work like this but very few in the end so you should be okay.

when i did this the app don't install on my device..
The 7-zip method not always will work. I use that to edit cyanogenmod themes to best fit my phone, but sometimes I can't install the apk, neither through adb nor file manager

Try smali the whole apk , replace the pictures then compile it again, using Apk tool.
I'll do this on the go a the time as a matter of fact I did the tsfshell PCB blue theme with the traverse grapheme icons earlier...I do it by using root explorer extract the app and replace whatever you want as long as the file names are the same when done zip everything back up and rename from zip to app then move to system apps or data apps set proper permissions and reboot .....I do it from my cell hope this helps

There are so many guides in xda for editing/compiling apks...
guide 1
guide 2
guide 3
guide 4
You must install java jdk
And you must "install" framework for decompiling from that rom, that you edit:
copy out frmework-res.apk and systemUI.apk from your rom and move it to C:/apktool folder
then run a command:
Code:
apktool if framework-res.apk
this will install framework files on pc
then run a command again
Code:
apktool if systemUI.apk
this will install systemUI files on pc.
Now you can decompile apks with
apk multi tool
it's easy to use
be careful with *.9.png editing! (search xda)
the *.xml files you must edit with notepad++ (free on web)
if you choose compile system apk, then chose y, and you will have a keep folder, if you decompiled a non-system apk, choose 1
("choose unsigned apk using keep folder option")
if you edited the png files, then delete in keep folder the *.png files what you edited.
if you edit any *.xml file then in keep folder delete the resources.arsc file
The non-system apk's you must sign with 13. (you will have first unsisgned-APPNAME.apk, then with sign signed_APPNAME.apk)
The system apks are signed with original sign, (you will have system-APPNAME.apk
Thanks Wechy77 i will try

First of all, which ROM are you using? Get the ROM's "zip" file. In the "zip" file, you will find the "system" folder. Open the "system" folder, and you will find the "app" folder. In the "app" you will get the apk named "Settings.apk".
If you are modding your ROM, it is necessary that you "sign" the apk. Else, it won't work.
Assuming that you are using apktool:
Unpack apk using apktool, do all the editing and stuff.
Open up the original "Settings.apk", and extract the "META-INF" folder and "AndroidManifest.xml" file from it.
Pack the apk using "apktool b Settings"
Now, copy the META-INF and the AndroidManifest.xml files/folders into Settings/build/apk folder and paste it (replace files if necessary)
Then, re-build the apk using "apktool b Settings"
Now, push the app, and apply the permissions correctly. In most cases, it is 644.
Iam using my rom
But its not finish because of that apk

As I said, system apps don't work if they aren't signed properly. And, the method that I use for signing is just "another" method. There are other methods too For simplicity, you can use any of the "apk tools" that other developers have created for simplicity.
