I am interested in the Sony Z tablet. No where near me has the tablet on display for me to play with before I buy..
I been everywhere trying to find one and no where.
Questions:
Why would I buy the 32gb over the 16gb?
It has micro SD, can't I just put a 64gb in and have plenty of space ?
My main use will be for photos, I own a Sony A7 and want a tablet for travel and photo storage to show while on the road.
How is the photo library for photographers ?
Are there any cool apps for photo storage and showing off?
I'd say to get, if you have the money, the 32 Gb model + a 32 or 64 Gb Micro SD. With incomming Kit Kat Micro SD restrictions, you won't be fully able to use all of the SD power, so a lot of internal memory is a good, if you install lots of apps...
If you are shorter on money or won't use it much for apps, mostly media, get a 16 + 64 Gb combo.
About image viewing, the Sony Album app is pretty gorgeous and really smooth, and an incoming update will make that even better. It's not the very best to organize everything (a file manager would be the best for that), but the UI is gorgeous and clean. The screen is really gorgeous and colors don't change even at extreme angles.

It's the question around my head stopping me to click on the pre-order button.
I have a N1 and though struggling with the internal memory, can't see having more than maybe 1GB or 2 in apps. I get that with this i would install a lot more, but what, another 2 GB? Maybe even 4?. Maybe 4 more in Music. I guess i would put there some films or series to watch. Maybe add what... 4GB? 8? I have a spare 16GB SD card (for use with the dock, which would probably get the films or series) and probably will get a 16 or 32 microSD for the tablet itself. That would be, at least, 64Gb. If i get the 64Gb version, it would mean at least 96GB
Why getting then the 64GB? I'm serious, i would really like to know the reasons people are behind the 64gb version. It's not that i believe it's not necessary, it's that I'm probably missing something in the equation and i don't want to miss anything so i can make the right choice before regretting not buying the right one.
Because.... People can afford it?

HD videos can get pretty dang big...10+ GB for 1080p (assuming bluray rip).
simple fact is HD video takes a lot of space. you put a few movies on at full res on the tablet, you'll soon see 64GB evaporate.
I have 32gb on my phone and am under constant pressure to swap things around because I don't have enough space.
I ordered the 64GB. Because I don't want any limitations and have to "worry" about if I have enough space.
And now when we have hardware that can handle high quality video 720p/1080p why don't use it. When you have gone HD you never want to go back to low resolution videos.
All movies/series I watch are 720p mkv.
4-7GB is one movie.
1-1.5GB is on serie episode
0.5-1GB is one game, and those will gets bigger now when they can be more advanced.
even apps will get bigger when they gets more advance.
So fast you will reached the 32GB mark.

All depends on your usage.
I keep around 20 gigs worth of music on my phone plus constantly swap out TV shows.
I got the 64gb version coming AND a 64gb microSD for it as well... I could easily see myself using the 64gb internal to fill up with pics and videos from the (from what it sounds like) great camera on the thing and have the microSD holding lots of videos, movies, ROMS etc... hell im lookin forward to the 2 terabyte microSD's!!
Because.........why not?
So I can laugh and look down from my mountain top upon all the 32GB peons!!!!
for $100, why not?
32GB Micro SD is about 60-70$ right now, 220$ for a 64GB. I want AT LEAST 64GB right now so I can dump all my music on it and use it instead of killing my data plan with Google Music. I'll end up getting a micro SD for it (64GB when they're a little more affordable anyways) so I can maximize the storage space on this thing. Games are huge, videos are huge. This thing takes pictures and video... why the hell not. What's 100$? You'll be paying more for the dock, but not for double the storage space? I think it's worth it.
64GB of local space is getting bigger and bigger the later we go into the future...
Look at Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Google Music, Pandora, etc. and you will see a lot of that space is now useless.
But who cares? What if I want to go on a long road trip and I pack several Blu-rays on board or several giant games on? Maybe. Well, my 16GB TF101 still has about 10GB on it..... My 16GB iPhone 4 still has about 4GB on it... My 2.5TB HDD still has about 2TB left on it....
If you have $100 extra dollars to go down on this beatiful tab, go for it!
That have been a lot of answers for such a short time, thanks
I feel i'm convinced to go with the 64GB version, didn't know some games were so huge (with a N1 it's difficult to play anything not named angry birds ), and didn't remember the huge size of the HD files (sometimes i forget that because of the 2TB disk at the main pc, which never seem to end ). The main reason being, of course, laughing and looking down from the mountain to the 32GB peons
Now, time to wait, at least for christmas, for amazon.de to send it
HD videos...each clip can easily take gigs
Just because YOU use your devices a certain way does not mean everybody else should do the same as well. Some people have way more than 64gig of music. Some people have gigs of movies (I know I do). It's nice to copy a few 4gig+ movies over and not worry about left over space when I need the space later.
I have friends like this.. they say "16gb is fine for me, its all I need, why do you need a 64gb".. /facepalm
For many people, the 32GB model (supplemented by micro SD) is probably enough. But many is not all. Especially while travelling I do need A LOT more storage - I'd rather avoid having to use external storage or an SD card in the keyboard dock unless it's just for transferring photos from for example my digital camera. As a lot of commentators have mentioned, it's once you get into media storage especially video (but also to some extent music, photos, E-books, magazines/comics/PDFs and the like) that the 64GB model becomes advantageous. Basically, there is a lot of competing media requirements these days and I can only see that increasing. Cloud storage is not really an answer, as it's a solution for some of the issues but not others.

That's exactly why i asked it seriously, not in a "i don't need it, why you do?" fashion, but in a "i don't know if i would need it, tell me why you do and i will see if i do"
It's my first tablet, and my other android device is a nexus one with just ~ 180MB for apps + storage and microSD (4gb atm). That's why i prefer asking than just deciding on my own, as i already said, i might miss something and that's what i don't want And i asked it publicly because i might not be the only one with the doubt
Well, I deleted all my music from Transformer because of free space problem. 32GB would also be too little. 64GB + some SD/mSD would be OK though.
Hello everyone.
After reading lots of reviews and opinions and having the oportunity to use the tablet, im sure i want to buy a Sony Tablet S
Now comes the second decission to make.. ¿Which model? As the title of the post says, im between 32Gb or 16Gb+3G.
I know that whatever the model is, the space for installing apps are the 4GB partition and i think the apps that allow moving to Sd card, in this tablet means moving to the second partition but never to the external sdcard. So... Do you think the 4GB are enough for all kind of apps and games?
About the 3G conexion, thats something i will use mainly during travels. Instead of creating the hotspot with my mobile (and draining its battery), i'll change the SIM card to the tablet. Another option is buying a prepaid SIM with some data-plan to just use with the tablet during those travels, and when i dont have available wifi's.
A requirement would be to have access to music in the external sdcard, but allowing to reproduce a full album. I have the movies part resolved with the MxPlayer, but dont know any beauty music app which allow to do that
Well, any opinion or advice are welcome, so dont hesitate to post it !
Thank you in advance
I'd go with PowerAMP, it works beautiful. Might use WinAMP as well.
But I prefer PowerAMP myself. It can access the external sd-card without problems.

Thanks for your answer ^^
I think that PowerAMP is not free, but anyway, if is possible to access and reproduce lists and full albums from the external sdcard, my requirment is accomplished so...
¿What would be your choose, 16GB+3G or 32GB?
(Forgot to say in the first post that price difference between both models are just 20€ )
I suppose that you'll bring it around to work or travel, thus with 3G is a better option. And you can buy SD card for more storage and even cheaper.
Hope you will have your own choice. Cheers and welcome to this community

I'd go for the 16GB+3G if the difference is that little, then get yourself a nice SDXC 128GB sd-card and space won't be much of a problem. At least not external. However internal might be eaten after a while if you install to many apps hehe.
Yes I know PowerAMP cost a few $$$ but it's worth it. WinAMP cost too. THough both exist as free-versions for you to try. So you can get the feel for it.
I'd go with the 16GB+3G too. I miss the 3G from my old Galaxy Tab since I got a Wi-Fi version and with full-size SD card and USB storage capabilities, storage isn't a huge problem unless you install stupendous amounts of apps.
Thanxs for all the answers.
The usage of the tablet is not going to be for work, but i'll bring it in my own travels where i wont have available a 3G network since the cost of using it in other countries are so expensive
I also found a nice music player (Meridian player), which allow to reproduce lists from the external sdcard, so with MxPlayer and Meridian i got covered the multimedia part.
Im also planning to use the tablet for playing games from psn, gameloft and emulators, so what bothers me is that the 16GB version only have around 8.5GB in the usb storage and im quite sure that all this kind of games cant be installed in the external sd.
How much space does this games take up in the usb storage? I know that having 3G is a great option, but im almost deciding on the 32 version just for this reason

Most of the gameloft games I've seen have been about 250MB worth of SD card data (maximum, although there's been reports of them taking up to 1GB), so you'd still be able to fit plenty of stuff on there. If you're that worried about it, sure, get the 32GB, but I think it's more about how you're going to use it.
I myself went with the 16GB as I already have an additional 16GB SD Card.
I have a MP3 player that I keep most of my music on, I mostly keep movies on my tablet.

Same here. I bought the 16GB version, since I already have 16GB and 8GB SD cards handy. Plus, once I bought my USB OTG cable I just keep movies on a 16GB USB and transfer them to the SD card one at a a time. Works a treat for me.

That's cause the only ones available on the Tablet S are worthless P.O.S. compared to the ones unavailable.
Games such as backstab HD, NOVA 2HD, Modern combat 2 and 3, 9mm etc have pretty much 600mb minimum.
w/ full sized SD cards available, 32gb isn't necessary at all as we've confirmed up to 128Gb SDXC cards working.
16Gb is more than enough for app / games storage (how many 1Gb games do you play?) in my opinon, but of course consider your own usage scenario
Hi all..
This is a fairly beginnerish question, I know, but i've just ordered an Xperia Z2 tablet and i'm now trying to buy a microSD card for it, but the range of possible cards with different letters and sizes and descriptions is crazy.
Can someone tell me which ones I am limited to (and perhaps which ones are better to get)? If it makes any difference, I would use it to store video files, so the bigger the capacity the better.
I think it says on the Sony website that it can do 'up to' 128gb, which seems like heaps. Just hoping for clarification on this. Some Googling and reading around has got me nowhere.
Thanks!
Any MicroSD card will do.
Two main considerations are capacity and speed. Capacity is the easy one, most cards will offer a 64GB size. Sandisk is the only company with a readily available 128GB card out today.
Speed is the other factor. Although I don't have a Z2 tablet, if it shares the same memory controller as the Z2 phone, it is a very good one and can take advantage of the fastest MicroSD cards out today. Slower cards can hinder performance when taking pics, video, etc.
This is a recent thread on the Z2 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2764546
As mentioned in that thread, my personal favorite is the Samsung Pro 64GB, excellent performance.
Hey everyone,
Which storage?
Especially in Canada, the difference between 16gb and 32gb is $100! That is crazy.
Given that I look at my note 3 storage and I don't even use half of the apps I downloaded and I'm still at 1gb, just makes me think is the extra $100 really worth it. I'm looking to use this tablet for more information searching, browsing and I barely store videos and music in general. I just can't justify for giving an extra $100 for a extra 16gb. I might as well use this money to buy keyboard with it. I know the operating system will take up some space, does anyone know how much memory does lilpop os take up? Does anyone know if OTG is compatible with this device?
What are your thoughts about it?
I prefer 64gb, so I guess 32gb.
My nexus 5 is 32 gb and almost full (and I don't even know why), so 16gb for a tablet will be way too low for me.
I've been thinking about this for myself and have decided 16Gb is plenty. Apps take up very little room, most of my stuff is on the cloud and there is always the option of OTG storage for the odd time I might need to travel with lots of videos etc. 32GB would be nice but unless you are away from Wifi a lot or play lots of large games or want to carry around collections of music, videos & photos, then 16GB should be enough. If the price gap was not so large I would just go for the 32GB version though as it would help avoid any micr-management in the future.
ordered a 32 gb because of bigger sized apps for 64 bit. Probably download a few games just because the gpu.
Might download a few movies here and there to utiilze that screen and boomsound.
Hopefully this tablet will faire better than the first gen n7, which im guessing it will by far.
I wondered about 64-bit apps as well but thought this was mainly a RAM issue (as people discussed with the 1GB iPad Air). Will there be an impact on storage, do apps compile larger and need more cache space etc?
I prefer what u really need!
look ..u must choose! choose what u really need!if u dont use a lot media on your device so buy 16 gb version. I myself use and keep a lot of media on my device so i bought 64gb version of my phone OPO. becuz i dont access to a good internet so i must have everything offline.a hint for all users! : install clean master!everyone that have a full memory and dont know why ..i say to u: u have a lot of junk files! install clean master and perform a junk file scan!!then see the miracle! i did it and 6gb got free! thats a lot.
Hello
I am using Nexus 7 2013 for a year now and I was thinking of replacing it. The other tablet I am looking for is Samsung Galaxy S 8.4 WiFi.
I mostly use my tablet for reading my coursebooks in pdf via moon+ Reader , Browsing, Movies and little gaming.
How is the development on this tablet going so far ?
Overall, would you recommend it ?
Secondly what is the available memory of 16Gb to the user ? 11.6GB or Something ?
Cheers

Around 12GB of free memory when you get it. I would recommend at least 32GB SD Card for it and the Lollipop version has a built it app2sd or just use link2sd like I do.
The tablet is very very very thin, compact and light. It will do everything you can throw at it the snapdragon 801 is no slouch. I've been very surprised on how well the shatter proof glass Sony makes too. So durable and scratch resistant!
Development is lacking due to the lack of popularity because Sony makes the devices expensive and hard to get. I bought my Xperia Z3 Tab Compact for $600 off eBay just after Christmas.
I'd say choose the Sony over the Galaxy because I honestly don't like Samsung. That's my personal opinion though.

Cheers mate for summing it up for me !
I also do not like Samsung for many reasons as well, like regionally locked, less development friendly and especially its UI (Touch wiz) which just lags on lower- middle end devices.
I'm divided between getting a new Nexus (the one that'd be released or just get this device )
It's one sale in the UK till may so I think I still have time to grab it for 400$(£269) on John Lewis.
Usually in May- June we see a new nexus tablet but there haven't been any leaks so doesn't seem like one in the making as of yet!
Sony makes it durable and is quite something but I simply hate their SLOW updates and little support in regard to upgrade their devices. Their software department has been really poor!
Another question on my mind is, is the 12 GB memory divided by any means . like internal and Sdcard0 with an option to expand via sdcard which would be sdcard1?

Yes , it is a WiFi version only with 16gb. 32 is 460$ and LTE version a bit more expensive.
So basically Sony has divided the 16 GB into three parts. This is what im guessing ! One for system (OS /ROM) which is around 1-1.5 GB. This is not shown in settings or via an app. You can find out if you are a developer.
Then there's internal memory on which applications are installed . This is usually 2 GB and lastly there's sdcard which is 12gb as you said before.
The memory can be expanded via sdcard1 (micro SD card) or using a USB via OTG support.
So basically there should be two internal memories. One would be called sdcard0(also internal memory in settings) and other internal memory.
Many thanks once again and I'm attaching my pictures to clarify the points I made.
The device I'm currently using has 1.57 internal and 4gb sdcard0 (called internal again in settings but sdcard0 in file explorer) and 32 GB microsd card (called external /sdcard1 )
So can you please tell me the size for internal memory as well. Not sdcard0 which you have already at 16 GB.

Here's the screenshots i was trying to post. Internal is mounted to sdcard0, sdcard is mounted to sdcard1 and usbotg is mounted to usbdisk. I have a hidden 8GB EXT4 partition and swap partition on my sdcard because I prefer it that way. If your not going to root just set up your camera to save to sdcard, and move all your large data to sdcard. Its what I did with Lollipop before it had root.
