Hello XDA Developers users,
Recently, I've been asking myself as I can't find the difference between kernels and ROMS.
I can flash ROMS and have a stable ROM as always, but what's the kernel? Is the kernel a second type of ROM? Can I flash kernels instead of ROMS? Is the kernel an extra 'thing' that can be added to specific ROMS?
I'm sorry for asking this silly question, I'm new.
A simple search in the XDA forum came up with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=ROM-VS-Kernel

what is the difference between a kernel and a ROM ?
Did you do a search around the whole xda forum? if you had you would have got some results. well i googled and got one small link from another forum
rom-vs-kernel-vs-bootloader
difference-between-rooting-jailbreak-rom-mod-etc
doubts clear? need more info? read wikipedia
so the most custom roms are build to run on the default kernel ?
we all did (use) so before the devs came up with unlocking and new kernel
Hi Im trying to educate my self about android os. Correct me if im wrong but what i understand is kernel is to an engine of a car and rom is to body works of the car. In that sense would i be able to use other roms for a certain kernel or does it need to be a specific rom?
It depends on rom "type"...
Some ones provide compiled modules...
Some other ones need modules build from sources...
Generally into the release notes of any roms, there're those things specified...
If not, in the posts of the release...
In Your question, there isn't the firmware (under kernel and rom).
Why?
Cheers,
M.
some kernel works with more than one rom but maybe u will have problem with your operation functions
I know this might get flamed but, what Kernel do YOU have the best results on, i know everyone uses their phones different, have different apps and all. but as an individual which Kernel do you achieve the most satisfaction out of?
ATM using RotBox 1.2
Latest Fluxi Kernel
About a week ago I switched to the rooted XWLPG stock Sammy kernel (using with an XWLPG based ROM) and the results have surprised me. Battery life and scrolling performance are as good as any other custom kernel I've used, and there are no bugs I've come across. I know that a couple of other people have complained about the smoothness of this kernel, but I have not experienced that problem, even when running underclocked at 1 GHz.
first of all, questions go in the q&a section.
and for us to recommend a kernel, one would have to know, what rom you use. you cannot use certain ics kernels with gingerbread and you cannot use stock kernels with aosp.
and how do you get a thanks for a question like that?

I thanked him accidentally. Gave you one too for your trouble.
Just try them yourself. A good place to start would be to sort the forum by "Stats".

First, questions are not encouraged in General Section. Read rules before doing some action.
Second, have you read OP of that kernel you want to install? If no, then read it
If yes, then follow it
Third, There is no best mod. Some may like one and some may another.
Fourth, kernels are in development section, go and read the thread, you'll know how to do it
Hello guys I'm asking you some information about the kernel, I hope this is the right thread.
I'd like to know if I can use use type of kernel for every kind of phone/CPU or if the kernel is based on a specific phone.
My problem is that I have a tablet (cube talk 9x) but I can't find any kernel for it. So can I flash for example the Franco kernel on it?
Thank you very much guys.
