[Q] How to flash .zip files with Odin? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I removed the OS from my N7100 after I messed up with a kernel. Now im trying to reinstall the cyanogen mod but my computer doesnt recognize the phone, and so my only way of flashing anything to the phone is by using Odin, which only accepts .md5 files. I also have Clockworks Mod Recovery but like I said, my computer doesnt recognize my phone as a device
How can I flash cyanogen mod via Odin? When I download it from the official website its not in .md5 format, it's a .zip.

If you can still get into recovery, then just throw a rom on an external SD card and flash from there. You can not flash CM via Odin. If you are unable to flash the rom from the external and your ADB isn't working in recovery (driver issue, most likely) to push to internal then you'd have to flash the stock OS through Odin and redo the steps for recovery and rom install.

[Q][HELP] Help needed badly. I formatted my SD Card from CWM Recovery MIUI/Siyah

I am coming from MIUI/Siyah and I was in CWM Recovery and accidentally formatted my internal SD Card. I do not have an external SD Card.
This means that I have nothing on my phone to flash and currently have an empty phone. When i try to flash a rom it says "no files found"
I'm in Download mode, but it's not being recognized by my computer or ODIN.
As i recall from way back when I originally rooted there were drivers that needed to be installed on my computer (a different computer) to have ODIN recognize it.
Honestly i'd just prefer to obtain direct access to the internal SD card and transfer a CWM flashable ROM.
is this possible?
basically I'm stuck in recovery / download
do i need keis on this computer for ODIN to work?
anyone can provide me with a link in what i should flash using ODIN?
You need Kies on your PC. It installs drivers that make the connection.
See Q7 in the FAQ:

As to "what should I flash?" - this really depends on what you want. You can start with stock -

Then, this guide can help flashing without getting the yellow triangle (if you haven't, yet):

Download Kies 2.1: www.samsung.com/us/kies/
THEN USE THIS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
Download the Kernel and UCKH7 package (either rooted or non-rooted, whichever you want)
Next use this thread for flashing with Odinv3 (download links are on the page)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659
ah thanks. i was digging around for that.
of the above two rooted packages, is there a advantageous quality to either one? If i'm going to start flashing ROMS immediately after fixing this either one is equal to the other, right?
As long as the kernel is stock, it shouldn't matter.
Again, I really recommend this guide:

In particular, I found Mobile ODIN to be very useful.
i've already got the wicked triangle.
ten characters
seems to be working.

Formatted my phone, not it won't boot!

Well let me start off by saying that I "updated" CMW through ROM manager. Big mistake it was actually a downgrade after using CMW Touch. So I decided to change it back, but for some reason the version that I was directed to use from ROM Manager had problems seeing files and directories.
So...I couldn't get access to the zip to flash again.
With my OCD and having a ton of useless directories and files already on my phone I said screw it, mounted my USB and copied my files over to my PC and then FORMATTED the entire phone.
Then installed CMW Touch through Odin v1.85. Success...
But my phone is stuck at the boot logo. Is there a way to flash a custom ROM from this point via Odin?
I am NOT worried about the flash counter. I just want my phone fixed

Yes, I can....
I thought I could mount usb storage there and drag over a ROM and then flash it, but my computer isn't detecting it when it's mounted, or I'm doing something wrong...?
Edit: I wanted to add the fact that my phone is showing up in my computer's device manager as Samsung Android ADB Interface...So is there some commands I can do through ADB to push a ROM onto my phone?
Thanks for your help Joe.

Trying adb push 'ROM' /sdcard right now....
Well I got the ROM onto my card, but when I flash it I'm getting an error Status 7....
"assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-I717" ||, then it repeats and says quincyatt.... I'm thinking since this in the nightly build of CM9 that my device should be named quincyatt and it's not since I don't have CMW for this ROM???
No one?
I would use either strategy:
1. Get the Gingerbread Odin 1Click package. This will install driver, Odin, then format and flash GB rom.
2. Use Kies ICS upgrade site, go to tools, then do an emergency firmware installation.
Then flash CWM kernel for recovery.
If you can push twrp to you phone, then flash version 2.2.1.1. You will be able to install cm9 successfully through that recovery. If you don't want to do that, then push a different ROM to your phone and flash that.
Excuse me for diverting the thread a little, but . . .
@froidroid:
I don't use that recovery -- what is the difference/advantage of it over CWM? TIA
I would say just a personal preference ultimately. The reason I suggested it for him was so he could flash cm9. Cm9 won't flash with his current recovery. I would definitely suggest giving it a try. The UI is amazing and there are a few more options that aren't available in cwm.
Did I mention a nandroid takes less than 5 minutes? Best part imho
Thats a gooood selling point.
At this point I'd say flash stock through Odin and start over...as long as you've copied over your important files...

LoL Thanks guys, I got it.
What I was able to do was push the newest version of CWM onto my phone via ADB. But it was tricky because it came as a stand-alone file (recovery.img) so I did some searching to find an actual Update.zip for CWM and replaced the recovery.img in that zip with the new recovery.img
Then pushed with ADB (adb push update.zip /sdcard) and updated

How to flash an image kernel to S2?

As the title state, I have search in the internet and found lots of tutorial about flashing a .tar framework to the phone.
However, the ROM that I downloaded from xda was just a .zip which contains an .img kernel.
How to flash the .img kernel to my phone then install the zip from SD card?
What do you actually want to do? If you want to root your phone, download a kernel file (there are threads about it), and flash it with Odin.
If you want to flash a rom, you have to install a .zip file through CWM, no other kind of files.
If you want to flash a kernel (and you have a rooted device), you also have to flash a .zip file through CWM.
Thanks for your reply. I know the steps of installing a new ROM. However, I used to boot the phone into flash mode and use Flashtool to flash the kernel which extension is .img. But for S2 it doesn't contain flash mode and seems I can't use flashtool to flash the kernel. If I can use Odin to flash a kernel with .img extension rather then a .tar extension? Also when I boot my S2 into download mode and connect to my computer, Odin still cannot detect the phone. If there is any "download mode" driver that I need to install or just use the normal Samsung driver ? Thanks a lot.
PS: Since the debug mode is working when I connect my phone to the computer I am sure I have installed a driver.

So I assume your phone isn't rooted yet, right?
For using Odin: there are plenty of guides in the General Section, or even on google. But to actually use it, you have to install Samsung Kies first, to get the correct drivers.
After it, you can uninstall it, because otherwise Odin won't work (but that's all written in the guides).
When your phone is rooted, you can simply flash a new kernel (.zip) through CWM.

[Q] Can't get Odin to recognise the phone

I am in a bit of a predicament here. I wanted to clear all the rubbish and folders from my phone to load the stock JB rom so my wife can use the phone for the camera(custom ROMS have horrible camera software) so decided to go into CWM recovery and Format the system partition, cache partition and data partition. Now all worked great BUT now none of the phone drivers will install on the PC(any of the PC's I have) and Odin doesn't pick the phone up. I have tried everything to get the drivers installed but no luck. Windows refuses to install the drivers, even from Windows update.
Is there anything else I can do as I can't find a stock original JB rom in ZIP format to install via CWM. Only have md5 and .tar file which work with Odin. I can install ROM's and everything via CWM but not Odin. Any help would be appreciated.

Click the Odin link in my signature, and try the things over and over under 'If Odin won't recognize the phone". There are stock zips around which are CWM flashable for sure as well on XDA. I unfortunately don't have a link handy, but search for 'flashable stock rom zip xda i9100' or something similar.

You can always use mobile odin. the lite version can be obtained from xda itself, thanks to chainfire. U can flash .tar or tar.md5 directly from your phone. No need to meddle with any PCs. choose the correct flash kernel though.

I tried both Pro and Lite versions and everytime I try open it, it immediately closes with "Unfortunately, MobileOdin has stopped". Meh. Phone is rooted and have all requirements as necessary, Kernel, Root etc.

Error 7 means:
1) you are trying to flash a custom file via stock recovery, that doesn't work, you can only flash stock zip files via stock recovery.
Or
2) you are trying to flash a stock file via custom recovery, that doesn't work, you can only flash custom files via custom recovery.
