You don't need root to install a rom on those things. What is the error when installing the custom recovery? Does it flash successfully but once you boot to recovery, it isn't there? If so, it's because you have to make sure to boot to recovery BEFORE you allow it to boot to the operating system first. The phone has a script built in that checks to see if the recovery has been modded and rewrites the stock one to it. When the phone goes to auto reboot after installing the recovery, hit the button combo to enter recovery immediately, do your backup, then follow installation instructions for the rom you want.
If this is NOT the error you are receiving, please describe it.

All philz touch cwm version for your device in various formats to flash with.
[Galaxy Note 3 - Dr.Ketan's K6 ROM]
[Galaxy Note 2 - DN3 v4 RC2]
[Xperia Neo L - Customized Stock ICS]

I looked into it a bit, and pretty sure I know why you are having issues. This particular model has the recovery built into the kernel, so you actually need a kernel with the recovery part already replaced with a working custom one that is specifically for your firmware. There are 2 methods to install.
Odin: http://d-h.st/me0
Via Update via Zip in stock Recovery (3e): http://d-h.st/FpR
What slot are you trying to install from? It should be the AP slot for Odin 3.09.
If you want to try TWRP, well, it only works with 4.4.2 and comes prebundled in some Kit Kat roms like Omni

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 - Root and Clockworkmod, which one first?

I am new to Android phones, I have Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 and I wanted to know do I have to root the device before I can flash the CWM. Or maybe I have to get Clockworkmod and then root. I searched the forums but I didn't find any answers. I just don't know which should I get first.
To make it more simple: Do I have to be rooted to install ClockworkMod? Or can I install ClockworkMod first and then root?
I'm rooted now. Can I just install Clockworkmod right now or do I have to unroot my device first?

You can follow this tutorial to install Clockworkmod:

Scroll down to "Clockworkmod Recovery" section.
help me to install CWM on rooted Galaxy s plus 9001
I have rooted my Galaxy s plus 9001 using DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0](zergRush Exploit),
I have rooted my device successfully, but there is no CWM installed through this rooting mod, now I am trying to search any method to install CWM but cant find,
in ROM manager application my device (Galaxy s plus 9001) is not present in the cwm flash list.
please help me to install CWM on rooted Galaxy s plus 9001.
They have not made one for i9001.
There is FeaMod Recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331164
But its messy to install.
Here in this tutorial -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776095 from broodplank1337 you can read how to install CWM with Odin on Galaxy S Plus. There are many pictures, so it should be easy.
regards
after rooting you can flash cwm, dont worry its easy, just flash cwm 6 through odin and then you can flash any stock rom you want.
take backup after flashing cwm ,is must.
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda premium
i would suggest installing the latest CWM using Odin and then rooting and unrooting becomes really a matter of installing some .zip files.
pls help me

[Q] CM 11 EXPERIMENTAL NiGHTLY - Error status 7

------------- SOLVED! --------------
Hello all,
First of all I want to say I'm pretty new to flashing ROMs etc.
Currently I'm at stock 4.3 Jellybean and I want to flash my SGS3 to the new CM 11 ROM.
I rooted my phone following this tutorial: vvvvvv.telefoonrooten.nl/samsung/samsung-galaxy-s3-root/ (sorry if its in Dutch, but it uses the CF-Root-SGS3-v6.3 and Odin).
After I rooted I copied both the CM11 ROM and GAPPS to my external SD, I went to recovery and tried to install the new custom ROM but I got an error (status 7) and it was aborted.
Also if I try to reboot it won't boot normally as it should be but it goes back to recovery mode automatically...
I fixed to get back to Jellybean by flashing the stock rom (unrooting?) it via Odin.
Anyone else got the exact same problem as I do and knows a solution to be able to flash CM 11?
Thanks in advance,
Steelbear

please read the thirst post in a rom/kernel/whatever thread. and maybe if you havent done it already you should also read the stickies in general section.
FAQ (Read before post !!)
- If you obtain Error 7 when you tried to install ROM in CWM or TWRP
Install the latest version of CMW or TWRP

BTW latest philz touch recovery works too
Since you went back to stock and you already know how to root, I suggest you go to Play Store and download ROM Manager to help you install latest CWM recovery on your device.
Or you can simply go to CWM website, pick the version of the recovery for your phone and flash it via Odin.
Hope it helps.

Indeed it worked! I found it out myself yesterday. Went to the CWM site and downloaded the latest version (6.0.4.4.) and flashed it through Odin. But thanks for your input anyways (to all who replied) !
An alternative solution that I often use is to open the Updater Script in META-INF folder in the ROM's zip and delete first lines, where it gets device model as property.
Obviously it's an UNSAFE operation (because that lines avoid to install ROMs of other phone on mine) but when I'm sure that ROM I've downloaded is for my phone I do it and it works

[Q] Have I installed Clockworkmod or not?

I've been following instructions to install Android 4.4 KitKat on Galaxy Mega 6.3 via Cyanogenmod 11.
My device has been rooted for some time, but I have never before installed any ROMs.
I have successfully (it seems) installed Clockworkmod via Odin, yet when I boot into Custom recovery mod, there is no "backup and restore" option, and indeed I seem to be in "Android system recovery", not CWM recovery (see screenshot).
I know that I can't install Cyanogenmod without Clockworkmod on board, so I'm nervous to proceed. Can anyone please advise?

That looks like the standard recovery, not clockwork mod, what model of mega do you have?
You have to reboot to recovery first after flashing custom recovery. That's because the stock ROM checks if the recovery is changed and overwrites it with the stock recovery again.
Rebooting to recovery first will solve the issue.

Thanks for responding guys.
Jzsidebott: It's a Mega 6.3, GT-I9205, in England.
Silesh.Nair: I've installed "ROM Manager" and used "Reboot into recovery", but I get to the same place as before; "Android system recovery <3e>", exactly as the screenshot in my first post.
So I used Odin again, and again apparently successfully installed "GT-I9205-recovery.tar", but still I can only get standard recovery.
Could I ask you guys if you would recommend CyanogenMod Installer?
http://beta.download.cyanogenmod.org/install
I'm a newbie at this, so if this method is considered safe I'd be happy to go down that route. Any advice? Cheers.
Don't use ROM manager. Download the cwm tar file and use Odin to flash. Remember to untick auto reboot in Odin and then reboot to recovery first. It will work for sure. Don't flash anything if you are running Knox enabled firmware else you'll screw up your phone.

Thanks. As I said I did use Odin to flash. I just installed ROM Manager afterwards to try to find out whether the Odin Flash had worked. I am a newbie at this and to be honest I have no idea what Knox enabled firmware is or whether I'm running it. I think that for safety's sake I'd best drop the whole thing and not risk bricking my phone, but thank you all for the help all the same.

Can't flash CM11

Hi all,
First of all, i'm not a total newbie, i have already flash HP Touchpad, Galaxy S and Galaxy Note with CM and OmniRom.
My problem is with Galaxy S2 : i9100.
I have already installed a compatible recovery (with Heimdall), found here on XDA : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/cwm-kit-kat-compatible-t2546597
I can go on recovery named (Android Recovery System (3e)), why it's not ClockWork ??
But, i can't flash any rom, i have always this message :
error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip status 7
I tried with adb, it's the same...
I tried to flash OmniRom, the same...
Could you help me please ??
If the recovery says '3e' then the CWM flash has not worked........
If, before you started, you were stock (4.1.2?) unrooted. You will need to flash a custom kernel to root your device and provide a basic CWM.......then you can flash your KK compatible CWM from within the existing CWM.........
If you *are* stock unrooted, you have two commonly used options....
1) use the android 3e recovery to flash PhilZ kernel.
2) use Odin to flash dorimanx or siyah or similar. Both will give you root and CWM, and in my own opinion, flashing PhilZ is easier.....
As with any 'non standard' procedure, read ALL the instructions before flashing.......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right

Unable to install custome recovery through odin on galaxy grand prime[SM-G530H]

Hi guys i cant install a custome recovery in my samsung galaxy grand prime sm-g530h with odin(versions 3.0.7, 3.0.9, 3.10.7) android 5.0.2, baseband G530HXXU2BOK3, kernel version3.10.49-1006642, im using windows 8.0 .
when a tried to install a custome recovery in order to install root and a custom rom i used odin 3.10.7 and all went smooth no errors in odin but when my device reboot and i tested if the custome recovery it did installed the stock recovery from android <3e> appeared, and i tried to install it with the stock recovery but it semms that it only works for samsung signed packages, itried to install differents recoverys but none of them installed.
If anyone can help me a will apreciate it from the bottom of my hearth
Thanks
Install the recovery again using Odin, this time after installation let the phone boot completely....then restart it into recovery.
The same happened with me too.
We just need to be patient xD
Hope it helps.
The trick is to reboot to recovery BEFORE it boots into the OS, otherwise there is a script that will rewrite the stock recovery back to the phone. Once you flash a rom or SuperSU zip, it will disable the script and allow TWRP to remain.
