Installing RUU as a way of downgrading hboot? - HTC EVO 3D

Hi,
Because my HTC Evo 3D is gone for repairs it will (hopefuly) return fixed and most probably updated to stock ICS with hboot 1.53.0007. Previously I've used HTCdev to unlock the bootloader and install 4ext recovery, then the Wire Trick to get S-off and finally this guide to downgrade to hboot 1.49.0007
Before sending the mobile for repairs, I've reverted it as close to stock as possible, using the method described here. One of the steps required extracting ROM.zip from RUU exe file, renaming it to PG86IMG.zip and installing in fastboot.
Now my question is... With a "fresh" phone (ICS, S-on, locked), will it be possible to install PG86IMG.zip extracted from Gingerbread RUU in fastboot? If this way works, it would downgrade hboot to 1.49.0007 and then allow me to use Revolutionary to get the phone Unlocked and S-off (instead of the HTCDev + Juopunutbear + hboot downgrade combination).
Will this work or will it fail? If the latter, is there a chance of bricking the device?
I'm sorry if my question is noobish, but I'm still very new to all the HTC hboot, S-on/S-off and fastboot stuff...
Best regards,
Crocodil

Yes, but if you left your phone s-off you could get it back s-off. Then you can do the RUU thing. AFAIK service won't touch s-off unless they change the motherboard

It will fail because the main version of the Gingerbread ROM is lower than your current ROM

Well, the touchscreen in lower bottom of the screen has stopped working and the phone is still on warranty, so I've reverted it to stock ICS + s-on + "Relocked" (didn't find any way to get back to "Locked"). This way there's a better chance that they will do the repair on warranty but I've read different reports about the Polish HTC certificated repair service... Sometimes they void warranty for using HTCdev unlock even if a problem is clearly with hardware (like in my case).
I hope that my EVO does get repaired as I've really enjoyed using it with CM11...

I don't unlock the phone, I use Ultimate recovery tool to downgrade hboot.

I did see this method before (one of the 2 hboot downgrade options I could find), but the step of "intentionally bricking" my device made me too nervous to try it But I might use the tool once I get my mobile back

lol, scares every one. But it was the frist way to downgrade

After a while of having to use the flash image gui app, it gets pretty annoying not being able to use Nandroid backups. That is why i am trying to downgrade myself.
Makes sense. Then check out the link vdubtx posted.

You can root, but you also forfeit your warranty to HTC by doing HTC Unlock, that code that you use to unlock it, gives them your device info, including serial number and when you bring it to sprint for repair, they can just look it up and see that you've rooted and voided your warranty.
Any files will work what is the latest 1
none of the RUU working do I have to format my SD card and I am trying to downgrade back to 1.40 which RUU file is i am clueless please help thanks I want S-off
I notice i have 2.17.651.5 already I seen that in the file which RUU file I need to downgrade to HBoot 1.40 please _2.08.651.2 i rem seeing that before my phone got that OTA by mistake.

[Q] Evo 3D CDMA - HBOOT 1.50 S-OFF back to S-ON

I have an Evo 3d with HBOOT 1.5 and S-OFF. I want to get to 1.4 S-OFF but I can't find how I can set S-OFF back to S-ON, so I can proceed with the downgrade instructions located here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
Search and google are not helping too much as there is too much noise talking about getting to s-off and not trying to get to s-on.
Can you please point me toward a solution to change from HBOOT 1.5 S-OFF to HBOOT 1.5 S-ON?
Thank you.

You can brick your device!
Forgive my ignorance, but if you are s-off, why would you want to do this? I thought 1.5 s-off was just as good as1.4 s-off.
Sent from my PG86100
When set at 1.5 you cant change the splash screen or radio. or other settings.
Also Bricking it is what I need to do to convert it to 1.4 BUT I cant to that until I have S-ON. Correct?
You are s-off so no need to brick, just download this copy it to sd card and flash via bootloader.
Also I could be mistaken, but I believe hboot 1.5 is perfectly ok as long as you are S-off, I am pretty sure you can flash whatever you want.
BTW the download link is taken from OP in this thread, you might want to read through it.

^Exactly this. If you read the first post of that thread (especially the gigantic red letters and what is under that), it will tell you to NOT brick an S-off phone as it will permanently brick it. You just need to flash the 1.4 bootloader.

i had the same problem as OP. i think the issue with 1.5 is even though its s-off, the bootloader is still locked and therefore a recovery cant be flashed and root cant be gained.
Ive been looking for the standalone hboot 1.4 ruu so i didnt have to do what op originally suggested
You have all of my thanks

Ya I didn't even think about revolutionary only working with 1.4 or below that must be the problem. You are welcome for the help, I just figured most of this out about a week ago when I had to do the downgrade after unlocking with htc method.
I would fastboot oem lock then do HTC's unlock again.

[Q] RE-unlock bootlaoder after ICS update

I had my HTC amaze unlocked with s-off and a modded hboot I then updated to a new ICS firmware to run ICS however when the firmware flashed to my phone it locked my phone and reset my hboot but still kept s-off. Is there anyway to unlock my phone again? If anyone has any help please let me know I already tried to unlock it through HTdev website and it did not work!!!
If you are s=off, then you don't need to unlock your bootloader. I'm assuming you have eng bootloader, and with that, you don't need to unlock anything.

If any of you read correctly, he said he unlocked it before, therefore, all he has to do is place the unlock_code file in hasoon's tool's data folder and run the unlock bootloader option, voila he's back to being unlocked, though the relocking sounds kind of odd, but it could probably be due to the hboot he was using, I'm guessing was Juopunutbear's or something.

Yes I had hboot from Juopunutbear when I did the s-off it asked to install his hboot but after I upgraded it changed my hboot back to 1.93.0002 and it is SHIP s-off not eng which I am not totally sure what the difference is but is there a way to change SHIP back to ENG????? I am going to give HTCdev another chance and see what happens... thanks for the input and help
ok so I just tried HTCdev again and it unlocked my phone however it did a hard reset the only thing I have to do now is to have eng s-off instead of ship s-off.

Just flash the eng hboot via bootloader, though you don't need to, unless you plan to do fastboot commands, which the average user doesn't have much need for, hasoon's tool does everything you need, recovery, root, etc, though I do recommend 4EXT recovery, which you can easily install after obtaining root.

[Q] Get bootloader unlocked and I already have S-OFF

Hey! A while ago I rooted my phone using the revolutionary method. Later I reverted back to stock and locked the bootloader. However the S-OFF remained. A few minutes ago I had 1.53 HBOOT and ICS stock. But now I got HBOOT 1.49.0007 and I wanna use revolutionary tool to unlock bootloader yet again. But now it gives me an error saying, "Failed to get root! "
Is there another way to get rooted WITHOUT using the HTC method since I already got S-OFF and 1.49.0007 HBOOT? I don't feel comfortable using HTC's method....

I think the "Failed to get root!" message is because HTC patched the tacoroot exploit in the ICS builds that was being used for temp root with the GB builds.
Why do you want to unlock the bootloader? If you want to run the additional fastboot commands you should be able to just flash the JBear version of the current bootloader, or does that cause problems on the GSM model?
ramjet73
Since you are S-OFF you can flash whatever bootloader you want. I don't know revolutionary method, I was using jbear to get S-OFF. After S-OFF i flashed RUU and I was on stock 1.53.007 locked bootloader with S-OFF and i couldn't root my phone. I've flashed hboot from this site:

There you have 2 versions of GSM Evo 3d hboots. After that you can do everything with your phone. Good luck!

Okay, problem number two.... I have flashed CWM now and I installed Super User inside recovery mode but I don't get root access? I downloaded the signed package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991929
Any ideas?
I have tried to repair premissions after the install of Super User. I have also updates Super User from Market after Install due to force close after the fresh install from CWM

Follow method B (steps 1 to 14 if you want to be on rooted stock) and it should be ok. If I remember correctly, there is a 4ext recovery to download, maybe try this one. Good luck!

That one with about 384 kB. Then, turn off your phone, turn it on in bootloader (volume down + power on). Wait a little and it will ask you to update. Press volume up, and wait. After that you have to delete that PG file from sd card. (that pg 300 MB has a rom on it..thats why it is so big)

If you can boot into your ROM then just check whether your phone is recognizing data on your sdcard. Sometimes after the wire trick sdcards tend to flip out. Your pc might be detecting it fine but the phone might not. Just humor me and try playing a song or something from the card just to rule out this possibility

If you are still having issues let me know. I have recently had the same problem as yourself.
With hboot 1.53 you can only run ICS ROMs but if you are not able to run ICS either I would use a 4EXT recovery then enable smart flash (I know this should only matter when s-on is worth a go) Also use fastboot to flash the boot.img from what ever ROM you have chosen just incase it's an issue with that.
PG86img.zip files are CID specific and need to be for your location and carrier (from my understanding) unless you have a super CID which is 11111111 (denoting a factory unlocked device, but don't quote me)
I too have a 1.53.0007 hboot and also am having trouble finding a solution to hboot changes once you are s-off with that hboot. How I got that hboot after gaining s-off is beyond me but it seems I am not alone and if that hboot can be put in it HAS to be able to change it. The easiest way that I can think of is to gain s-on (I haven't looked hard enough for that yet though) then to s-off again and make the hboot update that way.
by the way (now I can't find it's exact meaning and am choked) I was really surprised that the beer reference had more than just a catchy ring to it. Engineering something or other, I shoulda wrote it down
