Verizon VS980 Kit Kat Push - G2 General

I'm getting a VERY persistent software upgrade on my phone now from Verizon apparently pushing Kit Kat.
I'm rooted, no other mods but debloating and G2 Xposed and other apps.
Can I take this update? Will it wipe my phone? Would I have to reroot? I tried a quick search but I'm pressed for time and didn't see anything jumping out at me that answers my questions.

NO do not do verizon kitkat ota update

I did the OTA kitkat today and bricked my phone and it was stock rooted. I am not sure if its just because it was rooted or because several things were disabled. My phone would only show LG logo and nothing else and turn off but still glow. I went to verizon and they troubleshooted it and could not get it to hard reset or anything. They are sending me a new phone under warranty. Sucks being without my G2 so unless you want to be like the rest of us dont do it.

Ewwww! Thank you for that. I'm sorry it happened to you, but thank you for the heads up. Can't be without my phone right now.
So how do I get this dang annoying software update message to quit popping up?

I'm also getting this upgrade push. Has anyone else upgraded??

Mine won't let me in. Every time I try to get into software update it brings up that damn Kit Kat push window.

I was rooted and turned off the software upgrade with TiBu. I decided to take the KK OTA, so I went back to stock with the LF flash tool, then took both OTAs. After the KK OTA finished, I rooted it with IOroot25 and loaded a recovery with Micromods "Freedom" mod.

What did you freeze to accomplish stopping the auto software upgrade?

Ok, upgraded Titanium Backup Pro and froze software updater. No more notifications.

I can't stand that persistent update. I went to "knock on" my phone earlier tonight at work, wasn't looking at the screen, and tapped the Install Now accidentally haha went into a TWRP boot loop, but I just entered the terminal command code in TWRP (from a post I found on here) and I'm back in business. I'm definitely gonna use Titanium Pro like you did if those updates start up again though

DROID X2, rooted and stuck on 2.3.4 OTA upgrade

My participation in this forum saved my ars on some weird behavior my rooted x2 had been exhibiting lately. update: Nandroid backup saved me. Now, after a few days my phone is bugging me to OTA upgrade to 2.3.4. I see that this gingerbread has considerable benefit on ye ole ROM front.
Can someone help me out with a step-by-step upgrade on my rooted device? Do I need to unroot first? I have to admit to an unroot prior to my problems. Something with an app I need to get upgrade. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you want to apply the ota, grab ota rootkeeper from the market. Open the app, save root, then go to town updating. No need to unroot. Once updated, open the app again and hit restore root, as the ota will remove root.
That's pretty much it. As it stands that is the only way to get root on the latest ota so if for some reason you run into an issue and lose root, you will have to sbf back to 2.3.4.

For updating to the latest release you can't have changed any of the system files (ie frozen), and if you are rooted it's best to do a temp unroot (with a Voodoo backup of course) and make sure you boot into the Stock Recovery and attempt to flash that way. Should go without saying that you have to be on the stock rom.

Slim, i have ignored the OTA upgrade notification for 9 months. If its not broken, dont fix it theory. I had tweaked the phone with root only so that i could barnacle my tablet to the internet. Since i just saw how easily i recovered my phone back to my last nandroid backup, i figured i would try to upgrade and ROM this thing as it seems ive gotten it this far. Can someone link me to an easy to follow, step by step on "flashing stock recovery mode"? I can unfreeze programs with titanium backup and then unroot with ota rootkeeper. Just lrt me know how to stock recover, ie: phone plugged in? Unzipped file locations? External or internal sd card? I appreciate the help.
if update is failing
try unrooting with rootkeeper (keeps backup) like slimman suggested
if that doesn't work it's time to flash 2.3.4 sbf

a little surprised, that you made it 9 months and phone didn't try to install overnight after several notices
I know that has happened with other moto phones like D2 and D2G
Guys root has nothing to do with not being able to receive ota.
Nothing.
Lol
It sounds to me like you need to sbf back 2.3.4
Make sure your phone is fully charged.
Do you have usb debugging enabled?
Forget about guessing games, sbf back to 2.3.4.
Root your phone via Pete's. Do not use zerg.
Install recovery
Install superuser etc. If you feel the need but Pete's su. Works fine.
Install voodoo rootkeeper.
Make the back up.
Again with these phones root has NOTHING to do with receiving or not receiving ota.
If your ota is borked there's somthing else going on. You must have removed (bad idea) or froze something
Just sbf and follow my instructions again.
Hope that helps.
As I said in my guide, all updates were done with root, and I went from2.3.3>2.3.4>2.3.5
All rooted each time all retained root via rootkeeper.
Hope that helps

Keeping Root I545VRUDMI1

Not sure if its posted but I have been asked a bit about keeping root. I took the OTA from Verizhon not Kies so I am not sure if that makes up for anything. Anywho, I took the plunge with both Voodoo and SU Pro backing up my root and kept it. I know there are root methods out there for it already so its not horrible if you have lost it. Just letting you know, Voodoo, SU Pro works.,,

Voodoo does work.
I can attest to that. The biggest issue with updates after ME7 is now the knox warranty flag is included in the boot loader.
I see the knox status when I go into download mode and it was not there before.
I'm already rooted so the flag didn't trip.
Be careful with this update, only do it via OTA so that Voodoo can restore root.
If you do it vie Kies or Verizon software, you will lose root *AND* re-rooting may flip the flag.

Voodoo worked from me from rooted ME7 via OTA update. I got the "Custom" lock symbol on reboot after Voodoo restore, but Triangle Away seems to have corrected that. What is the Knox status? I'm not familiar with that so I don't know how to check that? Could you elaborate?

Did you use Kies or just the OTA? As I said in my post I used the OTA from the phone. Kies may be doing something additional to the phone.
Worse case scenario is you will need to reflash ME7/ MI1 from odin and root again using the "root de le vega" method

DO you have TiBu and freeze/ deleted bloat and stock apps? If that's the case depending on what it was it will error. Like I said I took mine over the phone after checking for it the other day manually. If manual doesn't work Kies will update it when plugging into your PC.
Hopefully if anything was deleted a backup of stock was made and you can reload it. If not, just try unfreezing everything thing. Assuming you are using or have used TiBu.
After unfreezing several Verizon apps and 3 battery pulls, I was able to download and attempt to install the update only to have it fail at install...

Have you deleted anything not just freeze? If there is a fail on install its usually a self check fail... something it's looking for is missing.
I have the stock ME7 image and could upload it to drop box so you could reflash on odin, LMK. To me it sounds like a app or stock system piece is missing. I've seen OTAs fail on Motorola phones simply because the yahoo app was deleted. I know, it doesn't make sense, but its what the phone self checks before installing the download.
Titanium doesn't sow any apps deleted but I did have Samsung watch set to user app. Adjusted that back and still nothing. Going to try pulling SD card tomorrow and try the update again. Guess we'll see what happens

I still think a clean slate wipe is in order. Other people even on the Root De La Vega report a taking OTA it working and keeping it as well.
Like I said, I froze but never deleted, but if if you deleted the backups stored in TiBu at one point, the deleted app its not going to show in TiBu. Thats why I always make a backup first of the fresh phone and upload it to drop box before even freezing things.
I may end up going that route. Good thing we can backup apps to the moon with tibu! Have u noticed improvements on the new update?

Nothing has caught my eye. Others are reporting the 4G is now operating off another/additional frequency or something like that, l and getting better reception but I have never had a problem where I live.
Did u happen to backup all your apps before rooting? I'm thinking I must have an app that was deleted and not backed up. I found that NFL was that way so installed and changed it to a system app with tibu

I'm trying to take the ota update but i'm a newb and didn't read about ME7's inability to flash roms and used ROM Manager to flash CWM. I think i need to restore the "stock" recovery in order to take the ota update.
Long time reader, first time poster.
Three questions.
1) For the "root de le vega" method, can I use 'Odin Mobile Pro'?
I don't have a PC so I can't easily use 'Odin' and i'm not sure how 'Odin Mobile Pro' relates to 'Odin'.
Is it the same thing but internal?
2) I have frozen tons of apps.
From my understanding from earlier posts, I need to unfreeze them all or this will fail?
3) After the Mi1 OTA, will my hotspot not work? or my wifi all together?
Thanks in advance

[Q] Unroot from Vroot on MJ7??

Is there a way to unroot the GS4 MJ7 if I've rooted it with the Vroot method in the General forum?
My wife's GS4 has lost core functionality ever since the 4.3 OTA push from Samsung. She couldn't even open the dialer up and place a call, it simply crashes.
I decided to root her phone for her with the Vroot method, after doing a factory reset. (The Verizon rep in store said the 4.3 software was conflicting with the 4.2.2 and that a factory reset would be necessary.)
Alas that neither rooting nor the factory reset fixed the dialer issue. She still can't dial a call. Obviously at this point I need to take it into Verizon and have them give her a new phone. Pretty unacceptable that an OTA before even being rooted caused this issue for her.
So, is there an image I can put on for MJ7 with Odin?
Check this thread for a complete device wipe/repartition and emergency recovery image you can flash with Odin. I would bet that this may solve your problem. You will obviously lose all your data, so take the necessary precautions. Good luck.

Are you running a fully stock ROM? If so, the drive should show up when you plug in your phone. At least that's the case with mine.
I just tried it on my MJ7 phone - the drive shows up for a minute or so then disappears. Disabling USB debugging doesn't seem to change that.
Sounds like Kies may be your only choice.

The device shows up as a separate entry but that doesn't have it either.
No big deal. There is a .99 app and if I've got ten minutes Kies or Odin will do it I suspect.
Sorry to bring up an older thread, but I'm having a peculiar issue that has to do with this thread.
I'm trying to upgrade to MK2 on my VZW S4 (which is currently rooted via VROOT on MJ7), but I keep reading that I need to unroot my phone before taking the upgrade and rooting again. Well, that's all fine and dandy, especially when I ran across this thread saying I could simply use the Verizon Recovery Agent. The only problem is, When I follow the instructions to get to the recovery agent, I instead get a "VZW Upgrade Assistant".
Is there a way to bypass the upgrade assistant to get to the recovery agent?
Is it actually necessary to unroot prior to taking the upgrade? Can I do a system recovery from the phone itself and then do the upgrade?
Thanks!

so here is the deal go throught with the software assistant and it istall it after it is installed then it will give u 2 options to upgrade assistant and software repair assistant use that one one of my recommendations is to use back of pc usb ports it kept freezing at 66 percent and that seemed to have solved it good luck i am at 73 percent and moving...

I second this. Just received the update today but I'm hesitant to install it. I still have stock recovery but I am rooted. Don't want to mess anything up. So if anyone who's rooted installed the update without problems let me know!

I'm rooted but I have custom recovery on mine (TWRP) and it was Hell... HELL! It took me 7 hours throughout the whole night to recover it, it was going back to TWRP every single time. But searching here in this fine website paid off! I'm not going to touch any OTA until I know more on how to prevent that again.
I had a similar experience when I upgraded to KitKat. Lost so much including pictures and videos that couldn't be replaced or recovered. Took hours just to get my phone working again. Never want to go through that again!

I was rooted and had TWRP. I upgraded using the LG service tool and had no issues. I lost root and recovery but was able to re-root using towelroot.
I was rooted and installed the uodate. I lost root and so far no chance of direct rooting. Good thing is that now we can choose runtime option, either dalvik or art.

Cool Confirmed, it worked for me as well, through the LG Support tool. Never taking it OTA ever again. :silly: And yes, I lost root as well and I've used towelroot before. I'm not sure if I'll install a custom recovery any time soon. Nearly bricked my LG G2 enough times already. :silly:

Have you tried using towelroot? From what I read it seems to work fine. I hope it does at least. I can live without knock code, but not having root would be a problem.

[(rooted) Galaxy S4 verizon SCH-I545 5.0.1] switch custom recovery from CWM to TWRP

i recently rooted my Galaxy S4 verizon SCH-I545 5.0.1 My main reason for doing so is because i want to install CM12 (to improve battery and no bloatware) but need to back up my stock ROM before wiping anything, so i can restore if anything gets messed up but when i installed CWM via ROM manager app , i booted in recovery only to discover that i didn't have the option to back up my stock ROM...nothing that says "back up and restore" or anything remotely close...so after alot of reading a searching it looks like TWRP was the one that most suggested for my phone. My question is, can i just use Flashify and flash TWRP over the existing CWM?? will this mess anything up or brick my phone??? please help and excuse my ignorance

Unless your bootloader is MDK you can't have TWRP,CWM or CM.

So how can I tell if my boot loader is MDK or not?? I was able to put CWM on there threw the "ROM manager" app but like I said, lacks in options (no back up/restore) options....is there anything I can do?

In your phone settings, about phone, it'll tell you what BL you're on. If you aren't on MDK and haven't taken the OF1 and OC1 update then you'd be safe with busybox and safestrap.
Looks like I have MDF

Keep it! You can install CM, and whichever recovery you want. I never had the MDK phone so I was limited by recoveries and ROMs. You could use TWRP for your recovery. You're able to flash AOSP ROMs. I would keep your phone on MDK at all costs.

Ok awesome, I wasn't sure if I was looking at the right thing or not.
In my settings it says...security software version: MDF V1.0 release 4
VPN V1.4 release 4
Is that my boot loader version or am I looking at the wrong thing?

It should show in your build number under about phone. It'll be the last digits of that number.

OC1 is what it is ...that's not good, is it?

Well, I can't get King Root to work so I'm currently not rooted and am on OC1. I'd hold off on taking the next update, OF1 because there is no root for it yet. There's a thread on it in the general area that can explain it better than I.

I rooted using the desktop version of kingroot (all in Chinese) and it worked for me...did it about a week ago. And yes, I'm holding off on the OTA update for that very reason but it still keeps popping up...super annoying! I really appreciate your help on this...I'm pretty new to all this so thanks for being patient and not ridiculing me bc I'm a "noob" lol ...everyone has to start somewhere though

No problem, I'm not sure if you wanted to but SDM system app is the update app I'm pretty sure. You could freeze that in Titanium Backup and it should keep the update from appearing. I'm going through that but I'm not rooted so I can't do anything about it. It's all good, if I can help I try to and you have to start somewhere, if it has anything to do with just about any phone, you'll find on XDA.

Yes, getting rid of this update would help a lot...I don't want to accidentally hit the Update button... I tried looking up ways to remove it before but got nowhere, I'll definitely try your method

I did want to mention if you're really new that I'd be careful with the apps. Generally it's not good to uninstall or delete system apps and sometimes Google apps are the same way. A lot of times but not always, you can freeze those and be alright, other times it'll make your phone go crazy so I'd check out the posts on the safe apps to freeze. Another good thing about freezing them is if you have any issue, just unfreeze those.

That's for the tip! I did read that in a few post in my journey. I need to find a list of safe stock apps that I can delete or freeze (like story album and amazon kindle) for my S4 ...I still need to get TB pro so I can do all that. Thanks again!

sorry mate, can't do cwm or twrp or cm.
Of1 rooted, roll back to MDK?
I have vzw s4 rooted with odin on OF1 and took the 5.0.1 OTA update. Is it possible to rollback to MDK or earlier version of Android so i can install TWRP or CWM, to be able to flash whatever custom rom i choose? Like do i need to downgrade say to 4.3 so i can upgrade to 6.0 cm13? If this is at all possible which android should i downgrade to?
Similar question here. I have a Verizon S4 (SCH-I545) and am on OF1. I just did a full factory restore using the recovery assistant software, I did not get an option of a version. From what I have been reading, it sounds like there is no way to get back to an earlier version, is that really true? I find it very hard to find current information, most of what I dig up seems to be dated. I just rooted the phone. All I really want is to install the AOSP ROM. I don't care what hoops I have to jump through, if only there is a path! I have tried Odin but keep getting an error that again I have not found any useful info on.
