Hey guys, newbie here and I got some questions for y'all.
I am a longtime iPhone user, thinking about switching over to the Vibrant. I'm used to the jailbreaking/unlocking of the iphone...are similar things able to be done to the Vibrant?

Ok a few things.
Yes, you can root the vibrant and install custom roms.
On the iPhone you can install hacked apps, meaning you don't pay for them, techinically you can do the same on an Android phone by just having the apk file, however this is frowned upon because that is stealing. Why not just pay for the app? Apps are cheap on Android.
If you are a current iPhone user and if you purchase the Vibrant, YOU WILL BE UNHAPPY. I suggest you wait for the iPhone 5 which will be released in June, or wait for the dual core Android phones coming out. Do not get the original Vibrant.
Ps...the Vibrant 4G is going to be released soon. You can also get the Nexus S at best buy.
btw coming to xda and saying you don't pay for apps and you steal them was not a wise idea.
Go back to the iphone, this isn't the place for you.

OP:
Yes, you can "jailbreak", for Android it is called root, and in turn you can install custom ROMs, Kernels, and for the Vibrant "modems" (radio's on other phones). As for "free" apps, Android, unlike iOS, has TONS of free apps already. Developers tend to offer a free and paid version, main difference is the free version has ads in it. Developers actually make more money off the ad revenue (typically) than the paid versions. There are still apps that are only paid, or the full version are paid only, and to be very honest trying to get those for free is BS in my opinion, especially given the prices.
This site is FULL of all the info you need to root any Android phone and start loading custom ROMs. It is very addictive, and compared to the iPhone, it is like living in America versus living in China in terms of freedom to do what you want. In China (iPhone) you are limited in your ways, and can do as you please to an extent. Where as in America (Android) you are free to do as you please, but have a great infrastructure to help guide you and aid you in such venturers.

I am not on AT&T, I am on T-Mobile. I have had a 3G for the last 2 years, but with the new ios4.3 comes out, it will not have an update for the 3G, they are getting fazed out. So I'm moving away from the iphone for a while, may get a 4 down the road.
I understand cracked apps are illegal, a TMO CSR pointed me to this website, so if cracked apps aren't talked about here fine, I didn't know. I was just going where I was told by Tmobile to get information regarding it. Simple as that.
I have a free 2 year upgrade at TMobile right now, so I'm looking between the Vibrant and the MyTouch 4G. Right now I'm using a Blackberry Bold 9780.

Warez is not just frowned upon, but is grounds for banishment on XDA, and actually every single decent Android site. Explaining how to get it, where to get it, or giving it out is a major no no, and asking (especially after being told) is a no no as well.
This isn't iOS where everything costs money, this is Android where you can literally get 95% of apps for free from the market. There is no need to steal, not that there is on iOS (I have an iPad, love it, and have paid for my fair share of apps even though it is jailbroken).
Lastly, if that is your only desire in a phone, then just don't get one. If all you want to do is use your phone to steal, then you don't deserve to have a phone.

You were told multiple times it is a no no, and in turn decided to ask again. At that point it isn't a question of not a knowing, it is clearly a matter of not caring.

Welcome to XDA! I came to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3G and I love it, as one has said you can steal apps but no one here will help you with that, also apps seem to generally cheaper on android than they are on iOS.
Depending on what you are looking for you may be happier where your currently have. Android's market is growing quiet well but I feel that it currently doesn't match the iOS market when it comes to games, so if games are your thing I would stay away (but we do have great emulators!) Many things may have changed in iOS since I used it last back in 3.0 something another.
Now few things I love personally love about android! Google Voice is easily used, Ive been using it for about 2 years now and haven't given out my real number since, its the best! Google maps is amazing, always getting updates haven't used a standalone gps since. You can customize the desktop however you feel please (don't need winterboard and everything, its just a ton easier). Swype is pure amazing, I could never go back to normal texting after getting use to it, super fast! And finally googles voice integration, you can talk and have it type what is said, you can have it search for you or even open your google maps and have it set your navigation!
As I'm sure you've noticed by now the forum has a lot of idiots who have nothing to add to the community except their derogatory remarks, sadly they don't seem to ever go away do they?

The link has short videos that would explain what it is better than I would.

Officially, yes. Google has released 2.3 out but nothing official for us yet.
so what exactly is "rooting" then and what does it accomplish?

Rooting does what jail breaking did for the iphone. Allows you to do what you normally couldn't. Its also really easy to do, there are a few different things you can use but they all get the same thing done.
When you root you can install new rom's like a 2.3 rom if you wish. There developers who change them how they wish and then share them with the community, you can find them in Vibrant Android Development part of the forums. You can also download new kernels that will allow you to overclock your phone or even underclock if you wish.
In the android market there are some apps that also require you to root your phone to use them. One such app is Titanium Backup, it will back all the apps and stuff you have downloaded so if you install a new rom or lose your phone or something you can easily reinstall everything.
Basically rooting fully opens up your phone, allowing anything.
Any thoughts on an app called app planet? I've heard conflicting stories just trying to get some clarification. Thanks.
App planet is highly questionable on a moral level. It is just like the market app BUT only features hacked paid apps. If you are into "stolen" apps you will enjoy app planet but be wary as some apps may contain harmful code. What you see is not always what you get. Virus and data mining are always a risk.
I hope this answers your question. Proceed with caution!

Nevermind....
That is helpful... This is my first Android, just trying to learn as much as I can. And... Not destroying anything in the process.
My feelings... if someone can't support a developer and pay pocket change for their app that they are going to use, it's pathetic. If people feel $1-$5 is too much, maybe they shouldn't be spending money each month on a cell phone bill...
You're absolutely right... This was a conversation I had with someone last night who wanted to show off his rooted d2. I told him I was using a rooted TB and he tried to one up with this app. I felt it was a little odd to have all apps available for free and he doesn't read this site. Now I can relay the message.
The Amazon app store on the other hand offers a free app every day
i totally understand that stealing apps from applanet is wrong but i think there are still several good uses. i have used it a couple times to download apps that were no longer available in the market like rom gripper and also blocked apps like wireless tether. i also have used it to try out a paid app for more than 15 mins allowed by the official market. if i liked it, i went on the regular market and bought it! it DOESNT HAVE to be used for piracy only....

When did it change from 24 hours to 15 minutes? I noticed this the other day and think its stupid, 15 minutes isn't long enough to test some apps.

This was to help developers, I will agree, 15 minutes is a bit short. But it is needed because of the amount of people that would buy a paid app, use it for that day, then "return" it. That and i'm sure people were downloading the paid app, ripping the apk, then "returning" the app, but still having the full paid version.

The funny thing is that 15 minutes is enough time to rip the apk but not enough time to even check out an app to see if I like it or not. I support the devs but this is going to hurt devs I think. I no longer try any paid app without finding it on the web instead of the market.
No discussion of Warez.
Okay after reading through the forums, it appears that for the time being while we can install Google wallet, it is useless. I have also read that the VZW Isis payments are area specific for now. So my question is are there any other alternative apps that we can use to do the same thing? Thanks!
My thought, after having looked around, is there is nothing else like gw, ATM. That may change, but for now, nothing. Isis might be ok, but I think we are probably years away from that getting fully ramped up. Think about it this way, Verizon has yet to even roll it out, them, merchants have to agree to use it and pay their fees, and have to feel like it will generate enough revenue to be worth the cost of new hardware and fees associated with the service. Google got in on an already existing technology, where Verizon's Isis, I think, is totally new. Just my thoughts anyway, I might be way off.
But the upside...we got root in two days, you think these devs are done????? No way. I think several would pony up a bounty for it. It'll come.

I had 2 kindles lost in shipping. Called Amazon and they are sending 2 replacements. The originals arrived and I have the new ones. I called Amazon about returning the old ones and they said don't worry about it because they will be disabled anyway. My question is can the old ones be rooted so as to prevent the remote disable or is this connected to the serial number somehow to prevent anyway of saving these?
If you keep the two originals off and off of wifi until a bootloader exploit is found, then yes, you will be able to keep them for as long as you want.

Or you could put up a post in general section asking this very question, I'm sure there will be some names dropped.

Hashcode has a 7", which he picked up for his daughter.
If you want, I can talk to a few of the guys I know, to see if they have the time. Stericson (Kindle Free & Busybox Pro) would be great, however, I would say to wait. Don't give it to a good dev, what we really need right now is a low level guy that has connections & a good understanding of Qualcomm's msm9615. There are a lot of low level things hanging up any other work right now, even custom roms, or true recovery. A bootloader guy with msm knowledge would be even better, but there really are only a couple that have been reversing BL & msm hardware for any real lengthy period of time.
I'll talk to a few of the old timers & see if I can come up with a name.

Cool, thank you. I know the hardware side of it but come up against a pretty hard wall when it comes to FW. Just never got interested enough to dive in. But if anyone needs a rework or replace an IC I can help.
Edit: I have 2x7" that I picked up for my kids, have to follow what hashcode is doing with kids specific. Can't futz with the kids stuff!
I could use one
I'll take one if you wouldn't mind I'm pretty new to much of this but I can't get better without something to test on and I don't have the money right now to buy one on my own. Plus, I would like to help any devs I can by testing their software and other ideas.

if by justice you mean features that require internet and my personal information and habits, those are features that i dont need or will ever use.
if you are talking general speed and battery usage and functioning with the apps i use the most, then logging into google on my phone is not needed.

If you know what you're doing you can log in with a Google account and not give out all the information you mentioned. There are a lot of privacy concerns these days all you need to do is some research. I'm sure you can figure something out that will accomplish your goals. Good luck.
Try freezing Google systems and Play services.
There are different apps that can do this, but you will need root.

I think he means not cutting off your nose to spite your face. Google credentials are needed for Play Store, like for keeping Carrier Services and whatnot updated. It's possible to push back against data harvesters while using stock Android, especially with root access. But it sounds like you'd rather take your concerns to the next level with something like CalyxOS and a Play Store alternative.

So, you don't want the Google experience yet you bought a Google-branded phone? Just a bit of an oxymoron there. Seriously, while I could ask why you bought a Google phone if you don't intend to use Google services, it would be a pointless waste of time and energy.
Install a custom ROM that doesn't use Google services and don't look back. Just don't complain when you can't take advantage of a Google-exclusive feature as a result.

You do realize that as a society we are all walking around with computers thousands of time faster than we had sitting on our desks 20 years ago. That have dozens of sensors, connected to wireless networks, that can cover nearly every inch of the surface of the planet. no having people post just to insult my choices is not something i ignore. that jack ass was the first person to insult me, and i dont roll over and accept insults.
i have zero problem with getting no answer, but a huge problem with jackasses that post only to insult me.
no one should ever feel they need to put up with **** like that

Then perhaps it's time to move on don't you think? This thread is really not productive.

It wasn't productive from the first post. It simply is an excuse for him to rant and rave about how Google is a data whore and all that. I can understand that, as I once was like him. Perhaps I am in the wrong here for being so blasé over Google's data collection, but I stopped worrying years ago about it. I figured the benefits outweighed the liabilities.
It's rather entitled to expect to have all the benefits of a smartphone while having none of the liabilities. I think if I were truly that worried about data collection to rant about it in a public forum I wouldn't be using a phone at all. After all, every phone made today, from the most expensive smartphone to the cheapest dumbphone, has sensors in it that can track you, even when the phone is off.
