[Q] is serial number broken related to baseband and other radio hardware? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello guys, I have a question related to radio hardware on SGS II I9100
so, i got the i9100 second hand, and the imei is generic (0049xxxx)
after several step, i choose to bring the phone to service centre (not the samsung, but it's like 3rd party service centre). he had a lot of box flashes. well long story short, my IMEI is back the original.
but, the person that repair my phone, tell me the IMEI is done. but the Serial Number is corrupt. after write the imei and SN, it's normal (the original SN start with RDxxxxx). after restart the phone, the imei still the same (the original one), but the SN is changed ( 001919b4xxx).
after several hours, the repairman said: "the imei is repaired successfully. but the SN is not. networks for internet are not problems. but i suggest, do not flash custom rom. it can break the baseband, and of the baseband is broken, the whole radio part (wifi, bluetooth, gps, GSM) is broken. cost of fix the radio part about $80. so, stay in stock rom."
so, my question is: is it true? baseband unknown=all radio parts is broken too?
I bought this phone so i can feel the kitkat rom. cyanogen, mokee, pacrom, dll etc is always updating this phone.
thx a lot
sorry for the long post, i hope you understand my english

so, is my phone can flash rom? i want to test kitkat rom. but if that is a no go, i will on stock rom

Need to revert to my original IMEI!

I have a Vodafone VPA Compact III v1605. I have been playing around with it for a while now and have been loading ROMs and Radio's like crazy on the poor thing but it is still working fine. What has happened is that i have cracked the screen and now need to send it in for repairs as it is still under warranty.
The problem has come in when i took it to a Vodafone shop to have it fixed. They would not except it as the IMEI on the phone when i press *#06# is not the same as the that on the back of the phone and the box.
I have gone through the forum and all i could find regarding this is noise about stolen phones and no actual help.
Is there a way i can revert back to my original IMEI? Have already flashed the same rom and radio version back as what i got the phone with but the IMEI changed again.
Any help?
flashing roms will not change your imei, unless of course its this:

[Q] Need help. GT-i9300 network problems + sn = 00000000000

Hi All,
I have accidentially bought Galaxy S3 GT-i9300 in China. Device came with Hong Kong 4.0.4 firmware. Unfortunatelly i could not fully test it because i didn`t have a micro-sim. It is international version called I9300GSMH.
I returned home, made a backup of EFS with EFS Pro and flashed 4.1.2 Poland into my new toy.
After that i immediately got several problems:
1) IMEI is OK and legal, but SN = 00000000000. That means no network and no phone calls. Fixed quickly with "special modem", but not sure if it was the best way.
Is it possible to repair SN if i know it? Does it make any sense by the way?
2) GPS is not working at all. GPS Tool doesn`t see any satellite. Neither GPS no Glonass.
Have no idea how to fix it and why this sh,,t happened.
3) Wi-Fi range = 30 cm. My router is Dlink DIR655. Other Samsung devices work with it up to 15 meters around. This one - 30cm. Tried to change settings, apply fix - no result. My S3 can see all wireless networks around, even located on the different floor of the building... but it can`t connect to any of them with "passwor wrong" message. Put it right on the router and problem disappers. WTF???
My S3 came from Hong Kong, but it doesn`t accept China/HK firmwares. Odin stops on flashing the modem stage. Actually, for some reason, it can`t flash China/HK modems. My S3 accepts any of european FW/Modem, but not chinese, where it actually came from.
Now some surgery. /EFS and /Factory folders are different (how could that be?) Files NV_data.bin and NV_data.md5 are different in those folders. Actually approx 300 bytes are different.
NV_data.bin and .NV_data.bak are totally different and they have different dates of creation.
That is it. Have no idea what to do with this phone. It works as a phone with the patched modem, but no WIFI, no GPS, etc.
I will appreciate any help on this case.
Thank you in advance.

Thanks, but it is already done. My S3 doesn`t work with GSM network without Ariza patch. "Special modem" i meant Ariza patch for modem. That is the only way i know to make SN=00000000000 device work with GSM.
Any ideas why i`m having GPS and Wi-Fi problems? May be HongKong phone has slightly different hardware which is not 100% compatible with European firmwares?
Sounds like a convincing looking fake or a store demo unit etc.
Nothing is going to help, if it was a workable fake your going to need the custom firmware, the criminals used originally to build it.
Can you post a screen shot of the system info and pics of the actual phone?
Personally I'd just take it to a mobile repair shop to get it looked at and to get a proper answer.

I don`t think it is fake because system information looks like genuine samsung except sn=00000000000. also i can upload samsung firmware to it and it works except GPS and Wi-Fi. Under the battery there is a label containing Model = GT-I9300, real IMEI and SN.
Another question is modem. Telephone came from HK or China. I can flash it with HK firmware to return it to original state, but modem remains XX - europe. When i flash only chinese modem Odin fails with "bootloader blocked modem update" or something like that.
Smells fake .

Why do you think it is fake? Fake phone has different firmware and not compatible with Samsung.
I have checked deviceinfo as well. It is genuine Samsung...
Can someone share deviceinfo from the International GT-i9300 ? I want to compare, may be some IC chips are different and i am simply using incompatible firmware...

Exactly same situation in Argentina.
I bought a SGS3 and after full charge battery and backup EFS I flash the Poland 4.1.2. After that i can´t connect to GSM network and my serial numer is 00000000000
Is not a fake. I bought from a recognized operator.
Then I flash an ICS 4.0.4 ARO (ARO = Samsung official roms for Argentina)
Now I looking for the Ariza solution, but I fear to have the same problems descripted here, cause I have the same facts.
So ¿Any questions to this post answers?
Thanks people, for that who live away from big cities is impossible go to a technical service.
Update. I`ve also got i9100 aka Galaxy S2. After official (no grey market, no sim-unlocks, no root, no odin, etc) update via Kies it shows same SN=00000000000, but everything is OK. GSM, 3G, WiFi, Bt, Gps - all parts work as they should work without any problems or applying any patches!!! That means problem is not in SN=00000000000. This zero SN is probably just a sign of the different problem.
same problem

No IMEI = return to seller possible stolen phone . Take to service centre .
Modem does not fix IMEI .
IMEI restore is only by restoring your backed up EFS folder .

If your phone has only empty/broken IMEI. You may send it to any service center. It is very easy to reprogram EFS and repair IMEI if you have original IMEI on the phone label.
In my case nothing worked but IMEI was correct and here is step by step instruction )
Step 1. Find working 2nd hand 9300 motherboard ($130 in my country).
Step 2. Replace motherboard.
Step 3. Ta-da.

IMEI, Baseband Blank/Unknown, No SIM Card Detected

Hello everyone,
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 international GT-I9100. It fall into water. After that everything working fine excerpt IMEI null/null, Baseband Unknown, No SIM Card Detected. I exhibited it and dryed for a month. When I compiled it up again, same problem.
After that I decided to change the moatherboard. I bought new one, change it, turn phone on and same problem!! After that I install new ROM via Odin. And the problem still exist! How this is possible?? Oh and I want to mention that I can't access service mode. When I try to access it service mode is opened but menu is blank!
What you think the problem is?? Maybe smaller motherboard, because the small one at the bottom of the phone I didn't change. I am very desperate after so many tries so please help me.
Thanks a lot
anyone???

most probably your efs folder is corrupt or some hardware faulty. Do you have any sort of efs backup with you ?
If you have no backup, you're probably boned. Download as many stock roms as you can & start flashing. If that doesn't work, take it to a local mobile repair shop; many have equipment which can re-write the IMEI to the device fairly cheaply.
Thanks for answers, no I didn't make any backup for efs, so today I will start flashing all available ROMs for my country if this will not work I will take it to the service.

help me please

hi guys i bought an samsung galaxy s II I9100 not new but still in a good status and he is runing very good when i bought it he had the an stock android 4.0.4 informations in attachement when i want to update to the 4.1.2 version he says that this is the last update for the phone so i downlaoded an 4.1.2 firmware from samfirmware i update via odin without problems but when i verify the IMEI isn't the same at the back of the phone and another thing on the back of the phone there is NFC under the camera but can't find't in options :crying:
No Help
1) I9100 = no NFC. If that phone has NFC capabilities, it's not an I9100. It will more than likely be an I9100P.
2) If the IMEI (in phone settings) has changed to '0049...' (Do not post your actual IMEI here), you might be in a bit of trouble. If the phone is an I9100P, download I9100P firmware from Samfirmware & flash that; hopefully the IMEI will come back. If the IMEI doesn't return, flash another firmware, and another and so on.
If it is an I9100 & you're merely confused about the NFC thing, download a bunch of I9100 firmwares & flash.
If after flashing a bunch of firmwares you still have the generic IMEI, try one/more of the many 'guides' on here which claim to be able to recover your IMEI without an EFS backup (no idea if any of them work or not).
If you still can't get your IMEI back, take it to a local mobile repair shop; many have equipment which can write the IMEI back to the device fairly cheaply.
Edit - Use a descriptive thread title in future - 'Help me please' is more than likely the reason you've been sitting for 18 hrs waiting for help, many people won't even look at your thread without a title which gives some idea of whatever problem you're facing/question you have.

thanks for your help what if my phone is i9100 and i have flashed an i9100p firmware what problems i'll have?
Probably none. The firmware is identical except for the NFC bits, as the I9100 doesn't have the hardware, that part of the firmware doesn't do anything. Given the rom will likely be for a completely different carrier, the modem in the rom might not be ideal for your particular carrier, and you might have connectivity issues, or you might not. But that's moot given you have the generic IMEI, you should have pretty much zero connectivity anyway (you'll be able to see the network but not use it).

[Q] Official network unlock not working i9300

Hi everyone,
I come to you as I am a noob as far as twinkering with my gt i9300 goes and I think I messed it up big time.
Here is what I did :
I had android 4.2.1 on my gt i9300, the stock rom from sfr (french career).
I network unlocked it using my career official unlock code, which worked great. It recognized my japanese career sim very well (i am in japan now).
Then I got greedy and wanted to update my android version so I downloaded a 4.4 android rom from I don't remember well, and a cwm manager.
The network unlock worked fine at first but after a restart it did not work anymore. It asked me for a network unlock pin.
I thought it was asking for a sim pin at first, which my sim did not have as I hadn't set one. I got mad trying sim pin code and gave up. Had I given it the network unlock code instead of possible sim pin code it might have worked but I will never know.
Then I tried to solve the problem installing android 5.1 cyanogen version but I had the same problem except this time I understood it was asking for the network unlock code. The problem is that when I fed it to him, it did not work, the request was unsuccessful.
So I looked for a solution on internet and found all kind of things:
I read about restoring the efs partition, but i do not have any back up.
I read about installing a stock rom version, change the csc and retry the official network unlock code, but it does not work, whether I restore through Kies (which gives me a vodafone version) or manually (with an sfr version, french vodafone it seems).
I read about installing Galaxy simunlock app after rooting the phone and installing userbox, but it tells me that my locking system is not handled as it is too new.
I upgraded, downgraded, rooted in every possible way but nothing works.
I am running out of solution and I therefore turn to you for help, hoping you will be more creative than me.
I have the official network unlock code, the phone, no back up of any kind and really little hope.
Thank you in advance for any help you could give me !
Have a nice day !
Sadly you didn't make a backup of efs. That should be first thing before playing with customs.
Oh well, I suppose your efs may be screwed up due to entering couple times bad network unlock key.
I suggest go to next corner GSM shop and pay 2400JPY for efs fixing and perm sim unlock. But before that, check your IMEI and serial number are correct. Thay can fix all of this in one step.
You need to do this via box, you can't reprogram that or fix yourself because you did everything that may help and you still have a problem. You can't use any software on efs v2. It will not work.

Thank you for your quick answer !
I will follow your advice and go to a "professional".
However I don't understand how they are able to do what I can't, do they have special softwares or anything ?
I would like to know because I do have the official unlock code.
Also, I would still like to upgrade to android 5.1 cyanogen version, do you think it will be possible after such a modification ?
I should not encounter any risk if I backup the efs beforehand right ?
Thank you again
Service will connect your phone to, so called, box, ie Z3X Box. This is some kind of pc-phone bridge hardware which can alow to decrypt and encrypt efs files, fix IMEI, serial number, flash firmware, IMEI certificate, remove network locks, sim locks etc.
Of course you can backup your efs now but it is corrupted and useful. Backup this partition after repair. Than you will be able to flash anything you want. Even CM12.1,no problem.

Ok I understand better now.
Thank you very much for your answers, they have been really helpful !
Do not let them plug your phone to the box if you want to install 4.4 or 5.0 because if you give them they will replace your imei number with a clon imei number and you will stuck with max 4.3 and you need to install a patched modem and kernel every time you format your phone... tell them to try to fix without replacing your imei number first. Replacing the imei number should be the last thing to do...
Why do you think they will clone his phone's IMEI? It's even illegal.
If someone doesn't know how to use box than he should not work in GSM service.
You can rewrite original IMEI and serial number without cloning anything.
An probably IMEI is fine, it's network lock problem.

Most repair shops dont care its legal or not. Also most costumers dont know this kind of things and as long as phone is working its okay for them. Mine is just a warning to make him look like he knows this things so repairman doesnt do something with no going back...
