New "Feature" of My Verizon App - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

This is from the Sydney Morning Herald today. I'm guessing this is one of the reasons the updated app requests root access.

That's why I immediately remove anything Verizon related from my devices.

I denied root access on the app and I can still use it.

Guys, this is done at the network packet level. The only sure way around it is to use a VPN on your device, as well as removing all traces of any software that may monitor you/phone home to mama Verizon.

Edit: I denied root too. There's no reason for such an app to have root access. I just use it to pay my bill.

It asked the instant I opened it up for the first time after flashing 4.4.2.
@jmacdonald19 - 100% correct.

Yea just opened it for the first time on 4.4.2 and all I got was the bluetooth proximity request. Su doesnt show any requests. I expected to see it ask somewhere.

This has been happening for a long time. Verizon apps will randomly attempt to gain root access. I've had several different verizon apps request it over several months' time. There seems to be no rhyme/reason to the time periods between requests

The fact we see it is unique as we are running a rooted system with Super SU to notify us of requests.
My question is, on a bone stock unrooted device, does the app get granted root silently?
Also see this image where some asurian (the one that carries our device insurance) is trying to get root too.

Debra Lewis, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman, explained to me that when a customer registers on the company's "My Verizon" website to see a bill or watch TV online, a cookie, or tracking software, is downloaded onto the customer's home computer.
Most cookies are benign, allowing websites to provide better service to frequent visitors.
Verizon Wireless' cookie allows a data-collection company working on Verizon's behalf – Lewis declined to name which one – to gather information on which sites you visit after you leave "My Verizon".
That information is "anonymised", Lewis said, to mask the Verizon customer's identity and is then shared with marketers, which can use the info to provide ads on the customer's Verizon Wireless device that match his or her home-computer interests.
So, by way of example, let's say you enjoy watching videos on the Victoria's Secret website on your personal computer in the privacy of your home. You shouldn't be surprised if ads for women's undergarments start appearing on your Verizon Wireless mobile device.
That's the scary part....because I use 'em at work and at home to pay my bill. It's horrible that they'll quietly track what I do after I log out for their personal gains.
Never had ads on my phone though...mainly because I use adaway.
I think though I opted out of VZ using my likeness when someone posted a link on how to via their website a year ago or so.

Former Alltel users, listen up. I need your help.

On your Rezound, open up Settings. Go to "About Phone", then "Network". Post what is showing in the "Operator name:" field. I think I might have figured something out but I need to figure out how many - if any - other users are seeing what I'm seeing.
Thank you!
P.S. - Don't be a punk and open this then close it without replying. It's not that difficult or time consuming.

I used to notice that all the ROMs (usually newest Sense ROM from JoelZ or Scrosler) I would run (I had the Incredible and haven't been stock in a VERY long time) would show a 30000-33000 number on the lock screen instead of "Verizon Wireless". Thanks, guys and gals. Keep the info coming. Here's the deal: When the OTA was released I was flipping through my phone's settings and discovered the "Unknown" entry in the "Operator name" field. I realized that I'd seen it before - as long as I've had my Rezound it's read "Unknown". I then realized that it was probably directly related to the fact that I can't run Verizon's NHL Gamecenter Premium app, which is supposed to be free for VZW 4G users. I've been in conversation with Verizon and they're speculating that there's a glitch in communication somewhere. You can see who this might have implication down the road with other apps and even possibly updates. I'm asking the question of all of you so that I know whether to pass the resolution information on to the boards when I get word from VZW that it's fixed. Looks like there are other users who have posted that they see "Unknown", so I'm definitely getting somewhere with this. I've also got the NHL's app developers digging into it. I'll post more news as I receive it.

[VIDEO] HTC One Max Adobe Flash Player Install - Stock Browser

Obviously there are a number of site still utilizing flash. If you need to be able to access these sites and their features from your phone, watch on.
Download:
http://flash.cricketusers.com - download from your phone. I've posted this link tons of times. It is on my site and I use it for just about every device I've had for the last year.
If you have any questions, please feel free to post them below. Thanks for watching. It's only through viewers like yourself that I'm able to afford this stuff.
When 4.4 comes out, I'll be modifying this post most likely.
I have a check box in my internet app that says Enable Flash Player...
Otherwise we would still be able to use the basic process of downloading the last adobe flash version (link below) and setting the enable plugins to always on.

So everyone could use the link to the authoritative flash apks I provided and install to get that check box.
I appreciate you making the thread about itbso people know, just prefer people use authoritative sources with more widely proven methods.
You'll have to use a modified version of Flash Player once Kit Kat is out. None of those APKs will work.

Great. And now that we already have the link to people that have it working on 4.4 and provided the download we wont have to watch the link you get paid for and download from your random server.
At least I know not everyone I've provided information to in the past is like you.
Sent from my HTC6600LVW using Tapatalk
I have no problem with you providing information. But while you easily could have said where the flash apk is and how to check a box after installing it (like I did) you are sending people to a video at a link that you get paid for views on and your own server to download the file.
Hopefully everyone else you have "provided info to" double checks things like I do.
This site has at least 6 ads displayed on any page. Not everyone on XDA Developers has had an Android phone before. This could be their first experience with the Android OS.
That link is to a dedicated server hosted by SingleHop who I pay roughly $250 dollars to a month. It has a 5 day backup in case I get hacked and have to restore files. They scan the drives for viruses which include malicious code so I can't even keep root exploits on there.
The download link which was available outside of the video is a redirect to the file location. So instead of copying a URL in case they are reading the information from their computer, they can just type in flash.cricketusers.com. This download location has been quite a few times on XDA and other sites.
Just a quick search of first page results shows that videos about flash installs on my Youtube channels have been shown at least 60k times. Someone thought it was worth viewing.
I only care to post this as your remarks in another thread I posted were of equal quality. A negative remark about the Verizon version of the HTC One Max not supporting AT&T LTE bands.
Out.
EDIT: http://flash2.cricketusers.com conveniently goes to a copy on my server of the modified APK for KitKat. I would give credit, but the other post did not mention the author from what I can see.
Dude. Its very simple. Its against xda rules to post a link to any site that pays you for others to access. I wont go into how shady it is to not just point someone at the working adobe apk directly and tell them to check one box.
I hope you are out...
PS I have a family member that I wanted to be able to use the verizon max on att so wasnt happy that it wouldnt work.

The download link was provided without cost / ads / etc.
I could have been like you and just told them it was there by default. Misinformation is still information right? You would have told them 1 way not to do it. Way to go Soldier.
I'm sure when Verizon was having discussions with HTC about the production of the Max, they didn't say "Please make sure our device can be used on AT&Ts network to include LTE so that their customer can buy it from us and put it on their network. Even better make sure it works perfectly so our customers can leave with their Max and go to AT&T".
Deflect the facts and continually try to bait someone by twisting their words. Guess that is the best our military can teach our psyop soldiers...

Verizon remote access everything on your phone?

Can someone explain when and why this came about? I can't find out much on Google other then they started tested it on the revolution phone in 2012. I didn't know anything about this until today while on the phone with a rep discussing switching to another phone and he asked why I wanted to leave my s4. I said due to bad battery life. Then he started telling how I had done everything in settings and such to save battery but went on to tell me exactly when I took my phone off the charger, how much bay percent I had left at that very moment, how many 3rd party apps I had installed and even told me which ones where running in the background at that very moment. I maybe behind on the time but he didn't ask to access my phone like they do when you remote access your computer. Can someone catch me up on this cause I don't to much care for as the article stated that any rep would be able to access your phone as if it was in there hand.

No its not just the s4. The only thing I could find was that article from March of 2012 and they where hiding it in a ota on the LG revolution phone that didn't sell well to test it out. Now here it is 2014 and they can tell me everything on my phone while I am talking to them in that same phone. Here's the article from then. It's named something else but doesn't mean they couldn't name it something we can't find.

Sure looks like a copy of the Sprint G3 info screen that's been photoshopped. Also, its really unnecessary to start a vague new thread to call attention to yourself when we have threads on this topic.
I like the Goonies reference.
Nope
That Google+ is my original post. It is in no way altered or photoshopped. As mentioned in my post there may be a reason behind the OTA update. If you'd like more proof to verify please let me know, I'd be happy to oblige..

Just wish someone would pull their system so we can confirm it. Been on CM12 but wanted all stock features back. Really missing the trusted devices feature.
In case anyone is wondering the guy got a replacement phone which downloaded the update when he turned on the phone. He said he is going to try to pull the system image tomorrow morning.

InB4 people start loosing root and the ability to bump then start whining like a bunch of little gurlz.
#justsayin
I've got my popcorn ready for this upcoming sh*t storm of ill advised LP upgrades People need to practice patience. Updates are usually a bad thing.
But yet...people will take that OTA...seek out that OTA (that they previously had blocked)...and then complain about root being broken and not being able to revert back. Should be a good show :good:
I guess it is starting a slow leak out.... LG Support tool shows that I have an update when I first start the tool app, and then quickly flashes back to "your software is up to date".
I don't think anybody needs to worry about losing root just yet. Other than here, I haven't seen any news about a Verizon G3 update. I'd take this thread with a huge grain of salt.
Well as long as revert is possible were good,! Will see though ,this could be the update that stops that
We see this with every update on every device. People jump to take the OTA, then are mad at manufacture and carrier because they are unable to root or unlock bootloader. Rollback may not be possible with LP update. Look at the Note 3 (where I came from), once you took the 4.4.2 OTA, you were beat for rollback. Chainfire said awhile back how complicated root will be with LP. I will wait for the devs to deliver a pre rooted rom before I ever take an OTA.
LISTEN TO THE WARNINGS IF YOU WANT/NEED ROOT!
My software is official. I'm just not versed in pulling images. And as easy as most say it is I'm not able to do it. If someone would provide some help I could have the image up in an hour.

That is super weird. Everytime I change about 3 or 4 different channels, I end up getting a 40sec odd video ad and once the video ad is done, there is an X mark on the top right of the video which I cant get to using the remote I got with the Mi Box. I have to connect a mouse to close it.
