Can't update to new 4.4 OTA.. Goes to Odin mode? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I had safestrap on my mk2 I saw the update today so I Uninstalled safe strap after the OTA failed the first time and went into the screen that says DOWNLOAD and on the top says Odon mode and normal boot failed or something similar. Only way to get it to boot is to hold vol down and power then cancel to let it boot? I'm really excited to try the kk update but have no idea how to fix this problem? Thanks a million for any help!

Flash a no-wipe MK2 ROM, then you'll be able to take the OTA.
You've got to return the phone to factory stock, which means no xposed framework, no safestrap, nothing frozen, no "bloat" removed.
It's easier to just flash a factory stock ROM.
You MUST understand that you won't be able to root it once you take the Kit Kat OTA.
That is, you're potentially kissing root goodbye forever.

Unable to update

I just bought a used S4 and as expected the seller reset it to factory settings. Now, when I checked for updates, there was a system update that I downloaded. However, my phone cannot install the update. It reboots and starts the update. I see the android logo but then it says error and the phone reboots. I then get a message that says the update was unsuccessful. I am coming from the rebound and don't know what issue the S4 has.

You can download the stock firmware and flash it with ODIN. That would likely fix the problem. Just make sure you use the same baseband version that you're currently on.

If your deadset on installing the newest update you can try odin. It doesnt have to be the same firmware tho. You can upgrade from mdk to me7, you cant go back tho because of it being blocked. Be warned tho me7 only has root capabilites. No custom recovery. Theres a thread in the devopment section with the me7 files posted and theres a guide in the same thread on how to do it as well.

Theres no reason to laugh at him. Maybe he doesnt care about root and wants the newest firmware.

I just read about the new update. Actually my phone is not rooted yet. And it looks like this update will make it hard or impossible to root and get a recovery? I better leave it alone then.

Same issue with update, only I lose data
I used Odin to go back to stock MDK, then when I take the update from Verizon, it fails as OP states and I lose data. No 3G or LTE. Have to erase everything in the Odin back to MDK stock to get it back. Any suggestions? Not in too much of a hurry, but concerned that I'll never be able to get to the new radio and firmware.
Update: I lose data when I set up Wi-Fi the first time after restoring. Had data when phone first booted in setup mode, then after setting up Wi-Fi, goes away. Must have some mucked setting somewhere.

You can't install a custom recovery on me7. The root exploit is all you have right now. Safestrap is in development. Not ready yet. When is ready that is your only option right now on the horizon for a custom recovery and a different rom.

Yeah, the OTA. Started rolling out the first of July. Defeated the loki exploit that Can be used on the mdk version. Unfortunate to be sure.

Safest way to root S4 MDK build running 4.2.2?

Im asking if there's any fool proof ways to root this configuration because i just bought the phone and dont wont to brick it like my s3 hard bricked. Any help or comments appreciated, thinking about just updating to 4.3 and waiting for a root method with that.
Read this. Used this guide for both my gs4's with zero issues

Don't update. You'll lose your ability to have a real custom recovery. Just stay on MDK and root. Then you can go ahead and flash a 4.3 ROM.

Should i factory reset and root before activating the phone with verizon?
I personally would just root, install custom recovery then wipe. After that pick a rom as most have ota updates disabled. Or install titanium backup pro and freeze the update apk's (I forget the file names)

Either way you do it just do not take the ota. I always root first and install custom recovery

the custom screen will stay there unless you fully Odin your phone or use triangle away. you can download a root checker app from the playstore to see if it worked

Thank you so much..I didnt use Kies but I totally forgot that verizon wireless has the software upgrade assistant...Its actually pretty cool..If you want to do a factory reset it backs up everything for you and attempts to repair the phone....But it also updates for you...so as of now I am running 4.3 on the MK2 build...
So now its off to do more research... Gonna reroot with saferoot and than attempt to use saftestrap for the roms that are compatible with safestrap ...Thanks for the help guys..

Updating Android with root/ss

Hi all, I got a couple questions. I'm currently still on 4.3, running a safe-strapped Rom (Galaxy s4, VZW). I'd like to upgrade to KK.
Is the latest firmware available OTA still NC5?
What method will I need to upgrade, OTA or flash stock? Since I'm rooted, is an OTA even an option? I do have SuperSU pro's survival mode (I heard that worked for a couple people). I'm guessing otherwise I'd have to Towel root.
Finally, I assume I should delete the custom ROM slot and factory wipe my stock slot before updating. Will doing a reset affect safe strap, or will it leave it alone?
Thanks!

Thank you for the link, and everything else you've done around here, Bob. I read around a little but I couldn't figure this out: do I have to use Surge's method to upgrade or can I take an alternative route (in guessing Odin) , now that towel root exists?
I'm hesitant only bc I tried to use his downgrade /upgrade methods on a different phone and had some problems. Thanks.

You can't use ROM slots with 3.72 safestrap. ROM must be installed to stock slot. Take and research this info.

I went back to stock using Odin. took update, rooted with towelroot installed Safestrap 3.72 . Then installed custom KK rom. All worked without any issues

I would recommend Odin full wipe tar. This gets your phone 100% stock. It's safe, simple and proven to work.
Watch the videos they help a lot.
I haven't done it the other way!
