So i really want to unlock but im worried about it still saying re-locked at the top if i ever have to send it back for any reason just in case. Maybe im just paranoid but i have already had 1 replacement and i don't want to have trouble if i need another. Anyways, my question is has anyone successfully returned a rezound BY MAIL. i dont care about if it worked in a store, i have to send it back by mail. Has anyone done it? If so, post your results
PS. I am not new to rooting, i had a Dinc and loved all the roms for it but you could always get it back S-on if you needed a replacement and there's no way to do that with this one.

Not trolling. I gave you an answer.

Plus plenty of people have posted their experiences about doing this over the phone. It was all that was talked about the first week we got HTC Dev unlock.

You still have HTC's Warranty, as for Verizon.. A store Visit they won't really bother going as deep as checking the bootloader... A mail in to Verizon they would notice once they try to Debug it before selling it off as Refurbished and sending you another
But DO they check and debug that deeply. Going to a store is really just not an option for me and I don't want to be stuck with a defective phone if I can't get it replaced and its a hardware problem.
EDIT: Also, what does HTC's warentee cover vs. Verizon's?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
HTC claims they will cover all HW issues NOT related to unlocked bootloaders. Verizon is kinda up in the air. I can say plenty of people have said that they have sent multiple phones back to Verizon while still rooted and s-offed, so not just the rezound and have never been charged.

In all reality it comes down to the individual person at Verizon who checks the phone... Somebody might load up the Bootloader and See "Unlocked" and all hell breaks loose... Or some dude might just ignore it and flash a Factory Locked Bootloader and move on..
As for Warranty IDK.... Check the manuals that came with the phone
So, here's the better question, has anyone here actually been slapped with a fine for returning an unlocked bootloader?

So far as we are aware, noone has. To be honest, as tach said, they might just flash the stock bootloader and go on. Depends on if that employee wants extra work or not.

Is this at the store or at a return center? Not sure of the terminology for the location where a VZW employee would have the opportunity to flash an engineering bootloader.

I don't think they will go that deep and check the bootloader, when my OG droid antenna crapped out on me I brought it in on cyanogenmod and they didn't even notice, the employees in most of the cases don't know squat about the phones and what to do with them

I'm interested because superCID and s-off wont work with the new OTA and I will be really, really sad if mine comes with the OTA.
If you get it more recently then it will probably have the update. Most of them that people are getting more recent have it. You would be lucky if it didn't.

I got mine on Monday activated at the store, a few minutes later after the sales rep handed it to me it prompted me to update. Luckily I came to this forum before going to the store. Got home supercid, rooted, then s-offed. I Upgraded from a Tegra 3 One X and I'm loving this beauty
I got one last Saturday and it prompted me for the update a few minutes after activating it. I had to exchange it this past Thursday (screen cracked at corner of top speaker) and the new one prompted me as well.

It came PRE OTA but like a dumb arse I hit the button to do the OTA. Oh well. I'll have to wait to unlock the bootloader and root it.

Yesterday
I got the DNA yesterday. I'm a HTC whore going back to the 8525. Any phones I have tried other than HTC and I alwys seem to fidn reason to ditch them.
The DNA however may change my feelings. Not because of HTC but because of Big red. The limited storage which create the need for cloud service is also another reason. A of now most cloud service is free but as more and more people move to the service free will be long forgotten in the cry of
"To much cost to host so manu people" and then boom, the fee's will start.
Yea, I'm on a rant, and i assume you wanna know about the OTA. Got my dna yesterday, I am coming from a Thunderbolt. My phone did not have the ota however every 5min or so a friendly reminder to DL the update keeps popping up.
I did get root (if ya wanna call it that) via HTC dev by using the "other supported device" option in the links. The email was very fast and the token worked. I just now got a stock rom DL and am going to load onto the phone.
If you get your dna in the next few weeks you may be ok but as the supply of phones drops new phones will have the OTA in place. Also keep in mind this applie to insurance as well. IE you drop your phone call INS to get new one.
You may wish to look at other options if you wish fro true freedom in a phone. Soff on this phone is a ways away.

Has anyone returned a One that had the bootloader unlocked via mailing it in?
I have to return the one I got for my GF and I unlocked the bootloader and such. I'm going to return it back to stock and relock the bootloader before I send it back to AT&T for a return(within the 14 days) and wait for the black for her. I just read that they could not "accept" your return in certain cases. I'm wondering the unlocked bootloader would affect that or if they don't even bother checking that
Why not just return it to a store? There was a post in another thread that at the stores they don't check.

How did you pull that off of returning your phone twice, once for the S4 then for the One again? I am thinking of doing the same thing but since I already have one exchange I thought I was stuck and cannot change my mind again. FYI I am still within the original 14 day period. Thanks in advance

This happened like 5 minutes ago and I'm freaking out. My One is rooted and running CM10 5-22-13 Nightly. I haven't had any issues since updating it last Thursday. I was watching this youtube video <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06xF46tIkmA&feature=youtu.be> on a friends facebook and when the stick figure in the cartoon explodes my One just shuts off. I tried holding down power and volume down. I tried plugging it in to power but to no avail. Anybody have any suggestions? It hasn't been a month since I've had it but I rooted using HTC's dev site. I think this negates my warranty... FML...
Leave it off the charger overnight and try to boot into bootloader again.. If your not getting anything while plugged in then your bricked. Any lights or screen action and you'll be fine.
If your bricked I'd tell them it downloaded an ota update and got stuck half way through and won't turn on anymore. If it won't boot there's no way to tell it was ever rooted and rom'd

Well since there hasn't been issues of other Ones with CM dying, i'd say you didn't do anything wrong, you didn't brick it. Something failed, probably would've happened if you were bone stock. Update
So I ended up going to an AT&T DSC location. The people there were really nice but not very knowledgable about smartphones. Pretty much just looked at the One, tried turning it on and declared it dead after not being able to turn it back on. They had to back order me another one which they will send priority. They also ordered me a 64gb instead replacing my 32gb haha. I had also dropped my One, my first week, while running because it was too big for my arm band and got a few scratches. AT&T FTW!
I just went through trying to get warranty service on a 1 month old HTC one, was refused, and am now frustrated with the whole process. This is a post both for me to vent, as well as a warning for all who are noobs, as well as seasoned veterans, thinking of unlocking, rooting, installing custom roms, and just in general messing with your phone.
I bought my HTC one online through AT&T about one month ago, beautiful silver 64 GB model. I had the customary 14 days to return it for any reason, except that date begins on the ship date from AT&T, not 2 full weeks in your hand. I heard a funny buzz from the top speaker within a couple days, but it was brief and I really did not pay much notice to it. As it was, it only happened at certain frequencies when playing music or videos using the otherwise awesome front stereo speakers. The source is definitely something vibrating under the speaker grill, but only when certain sound frequencies are made by the speaker. It is not the speaker itself, as I could cover that with a finger over the central speaker grill and it would then accentuate the vibrating noise by blocking the sound output, causing it to reverberate under the speaker grill even more.
As it would happen, I did not use the external speakers all that much during the 14 day evaluation period and did not really take note of it until about a week after, now past when AT&T would take it back. I waited another week in denial and then decided to contact HTC, since I was now keenly aware of it and could hear it almost every time I played music through the speaker. Now I don't post much in XDA, but I have been flashing ROMs for years and am well versed in the process. I lasted all of about 12 hours with my new HTC before unlocking the bootloader and flashing my first custom ROM. I had come from a long line of Samsung devices most recently, and although I never needed warranty service, I never worried about it because you could get those phones completely back to stock with no signs they had ever been tampered with. Not so with the HTC. One little line of text atop the bootloader screen would reveal my unlocking/re-locking.
The phone went back to HTC and immediately I had an email stating the phone was outside warranty, and asking for $200 to repair the device. Now I argued and escalated my case as far as I could, speaking to multiple reps, and eventually they offered to repair the phone for $100, only because there was some misunderstanding between myself and the very first rep I talked to when asking for warranty service (we had talked about whether HTC cared if the device was "unlocked", but the rep thought I was talking about sim unlocked and had told me HTC wouldn't care). I agreed to pay once they assured me my warranty would again be in force, as long as I did not unlock the bootloader. As far as I am aware, there is no way to unlock this phone and then return it to untouched factory status. It will always show that it has been tampered with. I was told by HTC that the main board would have to be replaced to remove this tampered status.
Learn and live, but a warning for all that go down this path. You play at your own risk. For me, I will run stock now for a good many months, until I feel sure the device has proved itself. Then my temptations to tamper will likely overwhelm me again....
I exchanged my 64gb for warranty, bootloader unlocked with a modified stock ROM on it and had no issues. In fact, I have exchanged NUMEROUS bootloader unlocked devices for warranty and have never had a single issue. I think I sent 5 One Xs back, all unlocked.

I agree with MetalHead. This is the first I've ever heard of a device ever being denied warranty service. Are you sure it wasn't because it might have gotten wet? I thought I read that it doesn't matter whether the software is custom if there is a hardware problem. If it was denied because of the bootloader being unlocked then it was probably because you told them. Next time just send it in. I've done it MANY times.
P.S. There actually is a way to go back to complete stock.

That's also because you sent it to htc and not at&t obviously.

There's a big difference in exchanging the phone with AT&T and getting a warranty repair through HTC. An AT&T store will not care and likely will not even know how to check the boot loader. HTC sent me pictures of the screen showing that I had unlocked the device to prove I was out of warranty. If there is a way to get it totally back to stock, with boot loader locked, and HTC not to be able to tell, I have not heard of it.

You mean when I unlocked my phone, that single page that said "WARN ING, UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER WILL VOID WARRANTY" is actually true?

Unless you can completely re-lock the bootloader revert to stock and hide all traces of any ROMs, custom kernels, etc. Yes.

Troll? That's funny. No, maybe someone just new to HTC, who got bad information from HTC itself, made a mistake and sent a "tampered" phone to HTC and ran into a snag trying to get legitimate warranty service. I've paid my "fine" to HTC, learned my lesson, and will be happy to have my phone back soon.

This is good information. Thank you. Ironically, these posts are dated well after my phone was mailed off to HTC. At least this thread may help steer someone else to the right information.
Have already sent one back fully unlocked for warrony

My question is why did you send it to HTC? ATT offers a 1 year warranty on it. If you raise hell they might even replace it on the spot, since it was only a week out. Just ask for a manager. Always go to the ATT corporate stores. Doesnt matter if you purchased it online, as long as it is an ATT branded phone.

Just want to confirm that I've had the same experience with a One X in the past.
Was denied warranty because the phone had an unlocked bootloader, even though it was clearly a hardware issue and HTC themselves admitted this.
If you read the disclaimer carefully on HTCDev, it does not say the warranty is systematically voided, but that if the phone is rendered unusable by the user, it may not be covered under warranty.
Ironically their warranty statement also says that only the hardware is warrantied, and not the software.
IMHO if someone had the time and energy to challenge them legally, I doubt HTC would win.
Att replaced my bootloader unlocked phone just last month. Don't deal with HTC deal with at&t
Wow, I really did things wrong. I've been lucky over the years and never had a phone that needed to be returned or serviced. I obviously didn't understand the process. I contacted the manufacturer instead of AT&T and got screwed. Never understood AT&T's warranty, never needed to use it. Doesn't help that my nearest AT&T corporate store is 2 hours away. So really there's no use of the manufactures warranty when you buy the phone through AT&T. I guess only those who purchase a phone directly from HTC (dev edition etc) need the manufacturer's warranty. Good to know I can confidently go back to what I know best, flashing roms and enjoying all that XDA has to offer.
Thank you all for your humbling advice. After all these years, my noob status is staunchly in place
Corp store would have just called warranty services for you. Next time just call customer care.
