Regular loss of signal after fixing phone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, sorry if this has been answered, but I can't find it.
I recently combined two broken i9300's (one with a bricked motherboard (gets into download mode, product name blank, think it's SDS), the other with a smashed screen) by transferring the motherboard from the smashed one to the other.
It seemed to work fine for a while, but after a week the phone lost signal, showing no service. Rebooting the phone fixed this, however this has now been happening more and more often, and now doesn't have any service even after booting.
Does anyone know what the problem could be, and how to fix it?
Thanks.
EDIT: I managed to restore service again by flashing the stock ROM through Odin (was running stock already), but it lost it again after a few hours.

Check IMEI and serial if corrupted. If it shows your correct IMEI and serial then it's fine. Otherwise you may have an EFS problem.
Report back please.

IMEI and serial are both fine (non-zero and non-null anyway). IMEI matches the label from the smashed phone. However, it's connected at the moment (just re-flashed the stock ROM again). Will update again the next time it loses service.
EDIT: Just lost service again. Only took about 10 minutes after flashing. IMEI and serial are still fine. I also forgot to mention that the motherboard I'm using is from a New Zealand phone, whereas the casing/screen is from a French phone. Don't know if that makes a difference. I tried flashing a French stock ROM, but that gave me an unknown baseband and null IMEI. Flashing the NZ ROM again fixed that.
EDIT2: And another correction. IMEI and serial showed fine after losing service, but I then rebooted the phone. Still no service, baseband is now unknown, IMEI is null and the serial number is non-zero but different than it was. However, I'm sure if I reflashed the ROM again I'd have service for a few minutes, so it doesn't seem like the EFS is entirely corrupt. I'm scratching my head a bit at this one.

Judging from your last two sentences you actally have got an EFS problem. Just to clarify: you get generic IMEI & serial with every other ROM you flashed besides the original NZ stock?
Otherwise it might just be the modem not fitting the ROM, try another (if possible original 3-part stock firmware), but make a Nandroid backup or save your EFS otherwise in case you need it later.

Not generic IMEI but null IMEI. Not sure about generic serial, not sure how to tell the difference. And I'm now seeing the same on the NZ stock firmware after a reboot.
Is a Philz Touch EFS backup sufficient? Anything else I should backup as well?

Well, since EFS is broken already it should be sufficient. To be on the safe site you can additionally save the EFS folder with Root Explorer.
If you have a working EFS you would need to save it with an EFS saving tool like 'Samsung Tool' in this forum somewhere.
Then you got to go through the EFS threads for i9300 and hope to be able to fix this.

I've already gone through all the EFS threads I could find. Haven't seen anyone with the same problem (sometimes it works, briefly, then it stops). Everyone else with the baseband unknown, IMEI null/null problem seems to have that all the time. Was hoping someone would be able to tell me what's different with mine.

How should anybody know from the distance? We can just give hints and point you into directions, now you've got to read & google and if you're
persistent enough you will solve your problem - as long as it's not hardware related.
Another great but a bit chaotic resource:

Sorry, just meant that I thought somebody might have seen this exact problem before.

I think I've solved this. Used the repair NV data option (to fix broken baseband) in EFS Professional, and it seems to be working fine. Will see if it's still working after a few days though.
My best guess is that this was a file permissions error.

No, not fixed. Worked fine for a few days then the problem came back. Just tried a non-stock ROM (Omega) and same thing. Trying a CM-based ROM now (ParanoidAndroid), but not too hopeful.
Still don't understand why it works for hours/days, then suddenly stops. Rebooting it fixes it the first few times, then that stops working as well (and I get baseband unknown at this point). Flashing a new ROM always fixes it, for a few hours/days anyway.

Sounds like a hardware issue, possibly nand memory becoming corrupt hence why it works for a while on a fresh install.

Any workarounds you can suggest? Just had the problem happen again on cyanogenmod, so that didn't fix it.

Try reading the freezing thread in general forum, see if the memory test tool will compete after a full wipe and fresh install of a stock firmware.
Other than that only a new motherboard, as the emmc chip is damaged.

Have you only flashed the modem(.bin) file, or the corresponding RIL files too?
Have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1881304
If flashing modem and RIL files does not help, check your IMEI (and EFS folder), maybe it is corrupted.
If you have a backup of your EFS folder, try to restore it.
If that does not help either, try to flash the whole ROM again.
Maybe you have to wipe data/do a factory reset in recovery.
Good luck !

Thanks for the help
wipe data/do a factory reset is already done
I have flashed the .zip file, I guess it contains the ril too, also checked weather the modem and ril match after flashing by using GetRil
IMEI seems intact, I can see it, Will try to restore it, I have an old efs backup as well

Restored EFS too, IMEI was ok and after restore IS ok, still no respite.
Any other solutions i might try?
Im in a very similar situation. Something went terribly wrong with one of the cm10 nightly's and my phone got HW bricked. Since that ive swapped out the motherboard and am know encountering this problem too. My efs is probably not as unadulterated as it could be but my IMEI is correct.
However with the sim in, About phone shows mobile network is disconnected, signal strength is 0, does not even know my own phone number. Cant find any networks when i search for them.
Any advice? OP what methods had you tried?

My EFS was clean, never touched it, still restored a backup, nothing happened
Things I have tried are:
go to CM9 Stable (Wipe/Factory Reset from recovery)
Go to Stock
Try Various modems (try which go with your country and firmeare(tough they can be mix matched))
GSII Repair
Check for matching ril and modem using GetRil
fix permissions
I would suggest you to try GetRil first to check weather the modem and ril match
Give some time for modem to get adjusted to your network.
be extra careful with the efs.
Any Solutions Anyone?

[Q] Recently bought S3 - network connectivity problems

Hi guys,
I recently bought an s3 that the previous owner had messed up (stuck at samsung logo), so I thought okay this is just gonna be a simple reflash. It's a i9300, I have no idea what carrier it comes from. - I live in South Africa and its most likely vodacom/vodaphone.
Anyway, I install the ultimaROM (cwm was still working) and I couldn't connect to anything when it booted - wifi, bluetooth, and cellular network. So I checked and I had no IMEI number and my baseband version was unknown, and from there I tried to backup and the restore the corrupted efs folder, which didn't work. (At this point I thought this was a stolen phone.)
After this I found the stock rom on sammobile and flashed it, and this enabled the cellular network which is working perfectly, but the wifi and bluetooth still doesn't work - tried on various kernels and roms. Currently I'm back at ultimaROM, it has a really nice feel.
I should explain that when i move the wifi switch to on (in settings) it stays there for a second or two then goes back to the left - it doesn't switch on.
I'd appreciate any guidance, if possible. My S5 was recently stolen and unfortunately I had no insurance on the phone:crying:
Do a full wipe, preload and internal sd card then reflash the latest stock firmware. Factory reset after in recovery.
If still the same then check if Mac address is valid, efs problems can corrupt it.
After that is it probably hardware.
boomboomer / OP:
Please read my postings on how an incorrect CSC can also cause an invalid IMEI. This is likely more often the cause over a corrupt EFS.

It's more likely that the csc change app happened to fix your nv.data file as it edited it -as the csc is mostly irrelevant to the phone's normal operation.
Your instance is the only one to try linking csc to efs problems, so no it isn't the most likely cause.
I'm glad you fixed your phone, but I think it was pure luck it coincided with the csc change. Besides, this op fixed his imei by flashing stock, probably due to efs v2 being unreadable to an earlier firmware.
Hi Boomboomer
I'm not trying link the CSC to EFS probs. From my experience it seems that if you have an incorrect CSC for your SIM/telco, you can end up with an invalid IMEI/serial and hence unable to access your network.
The standard response on here whenever someone has a 0049* IMEI or zeroed serial is "It's an EFS prob" and they never mention it coud be an incorrect CSC, as it was in my case. Sometimes it will be an EFS prob, I appreciate that.
I didn't fix my phone by using the CSC changer app so I'm not actually sure that would work but it should because I fixed my phone by flashing a ROM with a different CSC. That was the only difference between it and the same ROM with a different CSC that gave me an incorrect IMEI and serial.
As well as the S3 FAQ, this guide should be updated to note that an incorrect CSC can cause incorrect IMEI/serial and hence no network.

Okay, I've done all of that and my Mac address is valid. My cellular network still works perfectly fine, but the wifi/bluetooth problem still remains. I think I'm going to work with the fact that its a hardware problem and take the phone apart.
I'll check for any damage especially near the wifi/bluetooth module and antenna and work from there. The LCD has some hectic "streaks" causing me to presume its generic so maybe it's a dodgy install.

I checked my CSC - it's right for my location(South Africa - XFA), so that seems to be in order. Thanks for the help though :highfive:
I wasn't suggesting changing CSC would fix any wifi or BT issues but it could've fixed your cellular connection if its not a hardware issue.

i9300 baseband version UNKOWN and NULL IMEI

Hello,
I have a big issue with my i9300. I flashed PDA: I9300UBUGNK1 Brasil version and I decided to root it using CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300 .
After root the phone was perfectly working, but I uninstalled some pre-installed games which come with that Brasil version from sammobile and after I woke up after several hours I've noticed that there is no signal. In settings > phone info it says BASEBAND VERSION : unknown and IMEI : null.
I tried to flash again, I've flashed different version, nothing can help. The phone is fully functional WIFI works, only no signal, null imei and unknown baseband version. What the heck I can do before smashing it with a hammer?
And I'm talking about home fixes, as I don't have jig & other professional tools
There is no home fix for imei problems, unless you have an efs backup to restore. Take it to a repair centre and pay them to recode it for you, make sure it works on 4.3 before you accept it back.

Managed to make it working using an efs backup from a different phone. Now I have to figure out how to put my correct imei instead of that one
Imei now shows 0049
This thread should be closed, indeed a very friendly and helpful community over here ....

Stop whining, you got the right answer the same day you asked.
Cloning your phone by using the efs backup from another phone is illegal and won't fix the problem anyway.

I didn't wanted to clone another phone and hijack it, please let's remain serious. I just wanted to fix ny efs and that's why I used a backup made from a phone which was broken and was sold by parts.
Now everything was fixed at service
Just a question about k-tool backup
After doing a backup with it I have 2 files
efs.img - 20mb and
efs.tar.gz which has 0 bytes and appear to be damaged as I cannot open it.
Is that efs.img enough in case I lose my imei again after a flash or what?
Hello guys, I had this same problem 2 days ago after flashing the GlamourS4 ROM onto my friend's S3. The flashing failed as it was flashing the modem with an "Assert failed" error, however it still reported that the flashing was successful. On booting the phone it had a null/null IMEI and the baseband was also unknown. I even posted about it on xda.. Yesterday, I found a way to fix both the nul/null IMEI and the unknown baseband. I figured that if I flashed modems onto the phone that the baseband "unknown" message would be fixed, and in the process also fix the IMEI. I therefore searched for patched kernels and modems for it. I came across this page that had patched modems and kernels for the S3 running Android 4.3. I flashed the modems and kernels found on the page with CWM 6.0.4.7 one by one. I went through 6 zipped files before the seventh one fixed my IMEI null/null and baseband "unknown" errors. The one that fixed it was "Patched_XXEMC2_Modem.zip". The six I tried at first changed the IMEI from null to 0049XXXXXXXXXXXXX/XX. The seventh one fixed both problems well. IMEI is well now and the baseband is too. Try flashing the kernels and your phone shall be OK like mine.
Null or 0044....... imei, only repair on service with box and tools... In Serbia, cost 10 euro. Good luck

[Q] searching for network error

Decided to update my GT-i9300 today.
These are the steps I took before I flashed new rom.
Format and factory reset
Wipe cache
Davlik cleaned
Flash new rom
Reboot
I have tried Lollipop 5.0, 5.1 and KitKat all with the same results. Phone keeps losing network connection (Three), I have tried suggestions like airplane mode, delete and reinsert APN detail, remove sim card, switch off phone. I have also reflashed all 3 ROMs twice and still exactly the same error.
Install my backup (Original) Rom and all works fine.
I have the latest CWM too.
Can any help and advise please?
No one willing to help?
I have googled and searched this forum and that is where I found the suggestions that I have tried.
Is your imei and your phone's serial number original?
You can find it in Settings-about device-status
It seems correct to me.
I purchased phone in used condition with broken screen from a work colleague two years ago (no longer works here). I repaired screen but replacement did not have sticker under battery, I stupidly did not remove original sticker or keep a record (stupid I know). Well about two weeks ago I tried to flash a new rom but bricked phone, would not turn on whatsoever. Sent phone off to get repaired (Ebay) but because there was no IMEI number and I did not have box or the original sticker the guy would not repair (which I understand), I located my IMEI number from Google Dashboard and then got a Checkmend Certificate to prove that the phone was legit.
Since it's return I have had this problem. He has flashed an image on which seems to work but no other image that I try will work.
IMEI number is correct as far as I am aware but I am not sure how to confirm the Serial number is correct, any advice?
Just been to an IMEI checking website, inserted my IMEI number and listed serial number on phone and all details came back correct.
Your efs is corrupted and will no longer work with firmware that requires v2 efs.
Only solution, which is what your repair guy did, is to flash the patched modem and kernel -which enables the efs to be read again.
Each time you flash a firmware you will need to then flash patched modem and kernel before you can get connection.

And now my phone doesnt recognise the sim card and I dont have signal.
I am currently on AOSIP 5.9, my phone is redmi note 3 pro.
I have few nvram backups, from miui and cm13, what can I do to restore my EFS partition and get back my IMEI?

Don't worry. In my case, IMEI were not erased, even then sim networks weren't showing up. This happens when you downgrade or upgrade without required firmware (atleast with me). Try to flash latest miui firmware or, you can try cm14.1 firmware.

I can not help you with a solution, but I'll tell you that I have also lost IMEI, sent it on service and came back with another IMEI, not that one on the box. Since then, my phone acts extremely strange in any way, with random reboots, bootlops, errors on flashing different roms... Its just a pure hell. I don't know if the reason is that it has another IMEI then the original or its just a bad hardware, but I'm considering trying replace it with original one...
IMEI is the same on both SIMS for me. Sadly, I haven't checked before losing it.

@{s3rious}, @apriores, @Moody Abed, Guys I have had a lot of history with bricking and loosing IMEI, mac address, fp sensor issue, earphone issue with RN3. There were many times, when I thought, that I've damaged the hardware and it is needed to be sent for service. But let me tell you, most of these issues can be solved by making a few changes in the software. First of all, try to go to the latest global developer miui rom. Manually flash the modem partitions. Restore efs. Try all of these. You'll surely manage to correct the issue.

Bro I think you wiped your modem & imei. First flash the modem 1 and 2 then work for imei. Hope it helps. Here is the link

I've already flashed modem files manually and later followed a tutorial how to get imei back, but that didnt work. I used QSPT tools and it didnt work. Are there any other steps?

when I tried the first option, I completely lost my connection, the phone didnt recognized the sim. And then I made a restore with trp backup of efs partition and got my signal back, but IMEI was still missing.
After that I tried the second option, but I have only 1 IMEI, not 2. And in order to press start you need to have 2 IMEI-s, so what should I do?

You don't have the box with you?
Aah nevermind. The IMEI 2 is same as the IMEI 1 unto the last two digits. For me, IMEI 1 has 23 as the last digits and IMEI2 has 31. Apart from that everything is same. So, you can try putting some similar values to IMEI 2.
And, I'll tell you what. One time, I lost my IMEI and I didn't had my box with me. What I did was I made a clean flash of the miui global dev (any miui may work), and I had them back. Then I don't remember exactly, but I think I made the efs backup and .qcn backup and noted the IMEI on sheet and then flashed the custom ROM. Then restored the efs or qcn or maybe I entered the IMEIs manually, following the same tutorial I mentioned earlier. I had my networks working on the custom rom.
Good luck to you.

Try doing what I said. If manually putting values doesn't work. Flash miui global dev fastboot rom using miflash.
