Lollipop Firmware/ROM for XA Ultra? I don't think that's possible.... Sony released XA Ultra already in Marshmallow (6)..
My Xperia Z5 Compact has been barely usable since the OTA upgrade to 7.1.1, so I'm looking into burning a custom ROM. There's a Lineage ROM for the regular-sized Xperia Z5. Would the instructions and ROM also work for the Z5 Compact?

No, there are some differences between the devices. I would advise doing a clean install of 7.1.1 or downgrading to 7.0. Doing one of these will fix your issues. Also, there is a thread for Lineage on our Z5C here.
