I'll start with the short version for those who don't want to read everything:
I have a galaxy i9305 that came back from private repair with a 'Three' UK Rom, I want to flash cf auto root and mini. Is it safe? Does it install a locked bootloader or something? BTW I'm from Israel and not from UK.
The phone's current status is:
Model- GT-i9305
Android version - 4.3
Baseband - i9305NEUEML2
Kernel - 3.0.31-2051278
Build - JSS15J.I9305XXUEML9
The story behind this is that i bought an i9305 from Singapore, rooted it and when I tried to flash a custom recovery it I accidentally used the wrong file. After flashing the correct file, the touch screen didn't work. I then sent the phone to a repair, not at Samsung as it had no warranty. The repair shop couldn't fix it and sent it back. After a bit more research I discovered that flashing the wrong file can ruin the touch controller, which can only be fixed by buying a new screen, I bought a new screen, the phone works great, but I don't know if it's safe to flash custom roms or root the phone with the 'Three' Rom.
Thanks for the help, I tried to be as informative as I can, please tell me of there's anything else.
Bumping?

It will be locked to network unless you bought it at carphone warehouse. You need to unlock it before you can debrand. You can safely root it but your next step is unlock before you can look at other stuff.

So... If it came with an unlocked stock bootloader and the repair shop changed it to 'Three', it should be unlocked for debranding, correct?

You are in the wrong forum. Network lock is irrelevant to bootloader or firmware, you can flash what you like. No bootloader on the i9300 is locked.
I didn't realize you were talking about network unlocking, that was never my concern. I was only worried about flashing new roms. And so you have just answered my question.
Thank you very much, good day sir

This is probably a real noob question but is it possible to flash from a carrier firmware/image (i'm currently on OrangeUK I9300BVALF4) to the new XXBLF unbranded firmware/image without root or any negative effects??
goto sammobile.com
Should be no implications whatsoever.
Just flash a stock unbranded firmware via odin, but follow all instructions to the letter!!!!!
In the remote possibility that something goes wrong then as long as you aren't trying to root then just send it back to sammy for a fix and claim that kies screwed it up.
That said... standard disclaimer that you flash or modify your phone at your own risk and nobody is responsible but you if it goes belly up.

Should probably add that I'm not commenting on the specific firmware you want to flash, just that there is no problem inn principle flashing an unbranded firmware onto a branded handset.
Just search the forums and try and flash one for the correct region.

Thanks badger, I may wait a little before going ahead just in case. Seems it might be a little much just to get a brightness slider on the notifications bar
Thanks Taysider, I'd found a download for the unbraded already but nice to know about sammobile.com
I'm looking to break my android cherry, having been an iOS user so excuse the noob questions. I have been looking to get a i9305 from Orange (UK). My question is if I get the phone from orange, have it unlocked but not rooted and use a sim card from another carrier like O2 or vodafone will I still get OTA updates as those network carriers don't even sell the i9305.
I'm probably going to go with T-Mobile as they have a good sim only deal at the moment but as only Orange sell the phone on payg, would a T-Mobile sim work without having to unlock the phone?
Lastly how easy is it to remove the stuff that network carriers put on the phone, simple a case of deleting apps or is that where rooting comes in?
If you unlocked it you would get orange branded updates, you can solve this by flashing an unbranded or O2 branded stock ROM.
And to debloat you need to be rooted because the carrier apps are installed on the system partition which is only accessible by the root user.
Also I would ask T-Mobile or Orange about the sim question because they are changing carrier to EE now so it may work if not just buy what you want and unlock it (or flash everything can be solved by flashing)
I take pleasure in welcoming you to the world of Android and hope you have a nice time being free from the shackles of a corporate entity.

Thanks for the info. Couple more noob questions. If I get the phone on orange, unlock it and use a t-mobile sim, flash it with for example and unbranded stock ROM, then which updates will I get or from who? Directly from Samsung?
Wouldn't flashing an unbranded ROM automatically remove the bloat and by that I mean the stuff Orange put on not the original bloat from Samsung if that makes sense. And for future updates should then install without any problems as it's a stock ROM not a custom one? Would a stock rom increase the flash counter? If so how can I reset it?
Where can I get an unbranded ROM for the i9305 from, if there even is one (Sammobile isn't showing a UK version yet), and do you know of a guide I can follow? I've got a old HTC, might try on that first just in case I end up bricking it.
Sorry about all the questions. Really appreciate the help.

Yes flashing an unbranded ROM will remove the bloatware and you will get updates from Samsung.
There is a PC application which can find stock ROMs direct from Samsung's servers called checkfus, search with that if a ROM exists it will find it.
And a stock ROM shouldn't increase the flash counter only custom you can use the triangle away app to reset it from chainfire.

Thanks. I'll have a look at checkfus. :good:
So, first of all i think this is going to be a very usefull thread to many people.
Second, i couldn't find any info about relocking and unrooting galaxy s3 anywhere...
And the deal is:
I have a rooted unlocked galaxy s 3 with foxhound rom and CWM.
I have a full warranty on my phone, which means if it breaks, gets water or falls off the moon to the earth, they will repair it or give me new one.
(In denmark its pretty famous to do so with expensive stuff..)
And my galaxy got a screen crack, so now i want it repaired. The problem is that they stated clearly if i root or unlock the odin, they wont cover my problem.
Please tell me in a newbie step by step way how to relock the bootloader, remove the count of installations and unroot my phone so i can get it repaired.
Everything works just fine on it. Except a nasty crack....
Any thorough help is appreciated.
Thank you very very much in advance.

Search this forum for unrooting. You need to use triangleaway and flash the stock rom of your region. If you're downgrading you'll get a bootloop after this. Go into recovery, do a factory reset and you're good to go.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
This is as easy as it get - get triangle away and reset your flash counter
go to sammobile.com and find your firmware - flash with ODIN and your'e good to go. Only thing - odin will delete your internal SD card so backup your photo music etc'
you can nandroid your ROM to the external card prior to that.....

What about re securing the bootloader and removing CWM recovery?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
If you flash a complete OEM tar file it will override your bootloaderand will flash stock recovery over yours
You will have to flash custom cf-root recovery in order to re root it

hey guys, I'm new here. So from what I read, there is no problem after rooting, to unroot the phone and make it look as stock as ever, with a reset kernel counter, so they will have no way of knowing it was rooted, and it will have its waranty (similar to unrooting a nexus phone and getting back the warranty)? Please, tell me, I am buying an S3 and I really want to root it but it is an expensive phone, I really don't want to void the warranty irreversably
Yes

Flashing stock will reflash stock recovery, and all variants of the S3, except the US Verizon one, have unlocked bootloaders (no relocking the bootloader is needed.), just run triangle away, flash stock, wipe data in recovery and you are good to go.
Ok, will do. But I'm pretty sure I unlocked my bootloader

Triangle away needs root. So your guess is right.

Hi galaxy s2 thread.
Ive never had dealings with the S2 so would just like some clarification....
Im a note user myself but have recently bought a used S2 for my mothers birthday present.
Its currently on 4.0.3 (brick bug affected) and locked and branded to the 3 uk network.
My plan is to flash a uk generic gingerbread stock rom via odin then root it and sim unlock it thus allowing it to be updated via kies officially. Losing root is not an issue after the unlock and offical upgrade.
Is this the best way to go about it? Its the way I would do a note. Do the note and S2 share this flashing method?
Many thanks in advance.

Forget about the brickbug. It's been completely blown out of all proportion by a lot of people, and only becomes an issue if you're running a stock 4.0.4 kernel with CWM in the large majority of cases (there have been one or two anecdotal example of people bricking their phones with stock recovery on 4.0.4).
Having said that, why go back to GB ??
Root it with CFRoot; read the CFRoot thread thoroughly to determine which kernel you need, it's very self explanatory provided you read/follow instructions to the letter. Don't use a kernel marked ***problems mounting secure storage or the phone may not boot, use the next closest match (Doesn't have to be an exact match, gets back to what I said about reading the thread/instructions carefully), do your unlock, do your Kies update.
Yes, you'll obviously lose root given the update will flash the latest stock kernel over your rooted kernel, but let's face it, last thing you want to leave 'an ordinary user' with is a rooted phone; asking for trouble IMHO.
Only reason I thought of going back to GB was to avoid the brickbug and to save the flash counter. Long way round I know but I've always done it that way on my note. Had it for 2 yrs nearly and never had the yellow triangle or a binary count!
I'm just reading the cf root thread now. All being well it will be sorted soon.
Thanks.
Just a last one........ do you guys seem to experiance sim relocks after upgrades as a some note users do?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
The simlock thing does happen, but it seems to be more prevalent if you change CSC I.E flash/upgrade a stock rom not for your region, or if your phone was bought 'elsewhere' (Say you bought it in Asia, but are using it in Europe), flash/upgrade a rom for your current region. But it does happen seemingly '
just for the hell of it'.
You're only going to find that out when you do the Kies update. Besides, if you do find it re-locks, it's no biggie to re-root it, unlock again, and unroot again. And there's no absolute need to unroot; but as I implied in my PP, if it were me giving the phone to an 'ordinary user', I wouldn't leave it rooted for somewhat obvious reasons.
Edit - Any dramas along the way, post here again.
Many thanks.

Hello. I have a Verizon Galaxy S4, but I live in Europe and I was wondering if I can turn the device in a regular GT-i9505. Can I simply download the official stock i9505 firmware and flash it with Odin or the device will "explode" if I do that?
I saw a CWM flashable zip with the stock 9505 firmware, but I actually prefer the Odin method if possible, so I can have OTA/Kies updates...like if the phone was always a GT-i9505.
Thanks in advance for the replies and sorry If this topic is meant to be in the science fiction section
Best regards!
No just use it in your carrier the phone comes sim unlocked out of the box.

I know I can just pop in my sim and start using it. The point is, I don't want to wait for Verizon for updates. I have always bought debranded phones and I wanted to turn this one in such too, bit if it's not possible I'll just go for Cyanogenmod.
