Hello,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Mini with stock Android 2.2, not rooted and USB debugging is not on. Now the phone memory was quite full so I tried to remove the Street View app, but now the phone is stuck in boot loop mode. The Samsung logo is just glowing and the phone vibrates now and then.
I can get into download mode and recovery mode. I think I can flash a new firmware in download mode and then the phone would work fine then, but my big question is how I can save all my data (contacts, notes and so on)? Is it possible to backup an image before flashing, in recovery mode? Or is it possible to save just all my own files (contacts, sms and so on, and not the whole system)?
I guess everything will be flashed over when I reflash? Or is it in some way possible to reflash a new rom (maybe it needs to be the same 2.2 then?), so that my personal data will stay? I also tried to download files with "adb pull" but the /data folder can't be mounted, it just says permission denied, so I can't access my personal data with adb.
Are your contacts online in your Google account?

so there are many possibilities...
if your phone boot loops:
1. install cwm recovery
2. make a full backup
3. you can try to flash a custom rom (without wipe). maybe it works. if not follow step 4.
4. do a full wipe
5. install a rom
6. root your phone (if you install a custom rom its already rooted)
7. copy the file "data.zip" (or something like that) to your computer and unpack it.
8. copy the files/folder you need with adb to your phone.
if your phone doesnt boot loop (phone stucks at boot) :
1. root your phone
2. copy the files you need with adb
3. install a new rom and copy the files back to your phone
i dont know if it will work but i think it will. and please dont brick your phone while installing cwm
sorry for my bad englisch
Unfortunately I didn't have contacts sync to google on, so I don't have them backuped there.
Is it possible to install cwm on Android 2.2 which is not rooted? I understood it requires 2.3?
Is this the right way to install cwm recovery? wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Mini:_Full_Update_Guide#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery
edit: the guide seems to be for Android 2.3 and I think I had the stock 2.2, so is there any way to do it with 2.2?
Well now I managed to install cwm recovery with this guide: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342190 and the CWM-Froyo.tar found there.
I tried to do a backup to sd card in cwm recovery, but found only boot.img and recovery.img files on the card, both sized 8192kb, and I don't think they include the whole system. It seems to be impossible to mount the /data folder from there, maybe because the phone is not rooted. Can somebody help me how I should continue?
How can I flash a custom (or stock) rom without wipe, or is there any other way to get my own data?

you cant mount /system, /data and so on because the recovery you flashed supports only ext4 filesystems. but stock roms use rfs filesystem. so you need a cwm version that supports rfs + ext4.

Okay, but I can't seem to find a cwm recovery version that supports rfs + ext4, for Galaxy Mini. If there is none with rfs support, are there any ways left then? How would I flash a stock or modified rom without wiping my data?
I don't think I can get back to stock recovery anymore as I now have cwm, and also I haven't found any guide how to do it on android 2.2, on gingerbread is seems possible.
you cant flash a custom rom without wipe because the filesystem of the partitions is rfs and all custom roms use ext4 (as far as i know).
i search a bit in the web if there is anothr way. i will write it if i find something

Thanks, but unfortunately that one didn't work either, now the phone seems even a bit more bricked because now it only shows the Samsung still logo, and I can't get into recovery mode. Maybe it was for android 2.3.
But it still goes into download mode, is it possible then to reflash a stock rom, without wiping my /data with contacts and so on? How should I do it in Odin, without wiping my data? Or is there some other more safe way?
i think there is no chance anymore
if you flash a stock rom with odin it will wipe everything and there is no option to flash without wipe (as i know)
sorry but i have no idea anymore.
flash a stock rom with odin and post at facebook or something like that (if you are using it) that you need the numbers of your friends, family, etc

Okay.. How are the stock updates installed then, because I've understood that they don't always wipe? Is it impossible to just overwrite the existing files with all files from a stock android 2.2 image? Why isn't it possible to dump the content of the entire flash memory...
I know I can get the most important phone numbers, and I also have an almost one year backup in Kies, but I was kind of hoping to also get my notes that are written with the notes app. Maybe I still should try to install CWM recovery in download mode if it would help anything. I think sending the phone for warranty repair also won't help if it's impossible to get the files.
Edit:

OK, Now we have 2 options,
If it only the Street View issue, you can download update.zip file and put it in the root of SD-Card, and flash it via CWM.
The Other Option is to use ODIN 4.38 and make sure to select Debug Only, and sure you have to remove One Package, and sure

Thanks a lot for the help but unfortunately it didn't help. The update.zip didn't make any difference, and flashing through Odin made the system work, but the contacts are not there. It now has a different language, so that might be a reason, the version was not totally the same. I had debug only selected so that is not the reason. I guess there is nothing to do anymore, but at least the system works now...

Just for trying I tried and made some contacts and notes, and then I reflashed the same version from Odin the same way, and they was gone. So it seems impossible to reflash from Odin without wiping data. Maybe JTAG is the only way to get stuff out from a boot looping phone with stock 2.2 then.
Hi there,
I am new to xda and new to Android hacking.
What I wanna ask is, (I guess it's of most newbies concern as well), can we have a 100% backup of our system (stock ROM)? Obviously, it is important because:
If we perform an official (OTA) update to a new Android version. And we don't like it. It is possible to get back to the old original one which we are used to. (not everybody likes new things, and/or not every new thing is good)
If our phones are having some problems. And we have to give it back to the company for a fix. In most cases they will flash a new ROM for us. If we wanna keep using the old one (explained in #1), we have to keep a copy of it by ourselves.
If we want to try new custom ROMs, we may want to switch it back after trying.
Whenever we do any modifications, it's always better to keep a backup/roll-back point. In case anything goes wrong, we have a safeguard.
For the official warranty issue.
Yup I do see there are some official stock ROMs downloads for some particular phones. But those are not really a backup of our original ROMs. And it's always hard to verify if those downloads are the original official releases. And, if those downloads are 100% stock ROMs, this means some guys out there could make it, so what is the way to do so?
Or, how those mobile phone companies do it in their labs?
I have been doing researches on this topic for a few days. Some posts claim that their methods are "backup stock ROM" or "backup before rooting". But after digging into it, they requires rooting and/or flashing CWM. Here comes a few questions:
Questions
Rooting will in fact changes some files/data of the system. So backup after root is NOT getting the original stock ROM. Is it?
Is there a method to "un-root", so ALL the changes are TOTALLY reverted?
Installing/flashing things like CWM in phone requires rooting, which would make the ROM not original. Is there a way to extract the system backup from a computer externally?
In addition, I have found some related pieces. which could be useful to anyone viewing this post, and might be useful for you to solve this (my) question. :fingers-crossed:
* as I'm a new user, I can't post links directly. Please delete the blank spaces in between.
ht tp://www .modaco .com/topic/351269-backup-original-rom/
In reply #5, user C3C0 raised a method of backing up the original stock ROM without root. But it seems he is flashing CWM and that method is only for ZTE Skate.
adb backup tool of Android SDK
At the first sight i came across this approach, I thought it is the official method to do whole system (ROM) backup (WOW - how nice!). But after studying for a few more posts, I think adb backup can only backup app+app_data, and possibly some system settings only. Am I correct? And also, adb backup is only for ICS (Android 4.0), isn't it?
adb backup usage: ht tp://forum.xda-developers .com/showthread.php?t=1420351
(But mentioned in the bottom of #1 the poster is having some issues on using adb backup. Perhaps there are some bugs and not reliable(?)
One more question on adb backup: Can it backup just one app+app_data, and restore just one app+app_data, without affecting other things? If yes, we don't need to root and don't need Titanium Backup (which requires root) for backup app+app_data. Isn't it?
** In case I have said anything or any terms wrongly in this thread, please DO correct me, for helping me and helping others.
P.S. i am using LG Optimus 3D.
Thanks a lot, wholeheartedly,

I'm in the same issue here, looking for a way to backup/extract the stock rom of the HW-T18, cat B10 model, for the purpose of flashing it to other B10's since several of the cat b10's we bought here is without danish and a few has the danish system language.
so i want to take the rom from the b10 with danish and flash to the ones without.
if there is a better way of adding a system language to the phone please let me know (apk maybe ? or flashing an update.zip containing the danish lang) but do remember i'm not a dev i just have ORD.

That's not correct, not every phone has a clockworkmod built for it, my phone is a alcatel authority, and not only is there no clockworkmod, but the newest update.zip, unroots it, and sorceforge only has the the stock update. does the bootloader need to be unlocked for this to work

For rooting I will use Framaroot.
For installing CWM I believe that you can install it via ROM Manager, or you can install the ROM directly via Mobile Odin.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
OK....first....
Why look elsewhere for rooting methods? Everything you need is right here on XDA.
Second.....NEVER use ROM manager on an S2.....it breaks things.
Third....mobile Odin can only be used on rooted devices....primarily for flashing stock firmwares.
What version of android is on your S2....GB, ICS or JB?
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM
Yes, I found Framaroot here and am planning to use it for the rooting purposes.
Thanks, good to know. So I will need to install CWM manually I guess. Somehow.
What is it that Mobile Odin does, is it an actual reovery ROM itself or does it install CWM which in turn installs the ROM?
But I can use Mobile Odin to install a custom ROM I think?
I am 4.1.2 JB
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Mobile Odin is a phone based version of PC Odin.....it is designed to flash back to stock from a rooted modified phone without the need to hook the phone to a PC....
You're on 4.1.2.....
Search for the PhilZ thread.......
With the downloads contained, you can root and flash CWM via the stock recovery in one flash.....don't get much easier than that.......
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM
I can root it and flash it in one step? I've found like 50 guides but none of them as simple as you're suggesting.
There are so many ways to do each individual step.
I reckon the steps after that would be to install my custom ROM via CWM via SD card. Clear/Wipe cache and install the custom ROM again?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Edit: How can I backup EFS before using the technique you mentioned to root/flash CWM in one go, if my device is not yet rooted?
As I said........easy.....
1) flash PhilZ via stock recovery to root and flash CWM
2) At this stage your phone will still boot normally and allow you to download HC ktool in order to make your EFS backup. It might be an idea to make a full backup (nandroid backup) of your current setup using CWM too....
3) use CWM to flash the ROM (and it's associated gapps package) of your choice.
4) use CWM to perform the cache, dalvik and data wipes.
5) reboot, perform initial setup download user apps.......
Job done.......
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM
You could also juse Siyah Kernel, a good alternative to philz:good:
Except that it can't be flashed via the stock recovery.....it has to be flashed via Odin......
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM
In which way does a Kernel replace a rooter/bootloader flasher, are these not different things?

I very much appreciate your help Keith. I've been on numerous forum but never got this good feedback.
I searched the PhilZ thread and got so many results. My model is i9100 of the Galaxy S2, I guess the methods you have been describing works for this model?
I need to backup program data and EFS before I dare start playing around.
How can I backup EFS before using the technique you mentioned to root/flash CWM in one go, if my device is not yet rooted?
You can't. And you don't need to unless your phone is rooted, because if your phone is rooted nothing you can do to the phone is capable of borking the EFS/IMEI.
Edit - Also, I'm detecting a lack of knowledge of 'the basics' in the threads you've posted recently; I strongly suggest you read all the guides/tutorials stickied in the thread near the top of the General section before you do anything to your phone. A lack of knowledge exponentially increases the risk of you permanently breaking your phone depending on how little knowledge you have when you attempt to 'do stuff' to the phone.
For backing up the efs you'll need to flash a recovery first (like Philz as already suggested).
But anyway, problems with the efs won't be caused by just rooting so you can go ahead and root first and then use KTool.

Thank you. As I want to perform all the necessary steps directly on my phone, I am now thinking of doing the following.
Installing Framaroot (APK) and rooting my Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276)
Installing KTool and backing up EFS to external SD-card
Installing Titanium Backup (Root version) to backup AppData
Alt 1.) Downloading Mobile Odin to OS. Flashing ROM + GApps via this. But this keeps my stock recovery? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899)
Alt 2.) Downloading PhilZ Touch Recovery 3.0 for Galaxy S2 i9100 which flashes + re-roots for me (?). Not sure if it's the right version as the post is old? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840223)
Alt 3.) Flashing CWM via Mobile Odin, and then in turn boot to recovery (now CWM) and flashing ROM + Gapps via CWM. This should update my recovery as well as my ROM?
After flashing ROM, entering recovery to Wipe Cache, Dalvik and Data
Flash ROM again as previous step supposedly deletes the ROM?
Boot ROM, Configure, Install Apps and restore App Data
Does the above look correct?
Is the version of PhilZ the correct one? It appears to be a 'temporary recovery' rather than a permanent, which might be what I am after if I want to flash the current version of CWM for Galaxy S2 from www.clockwerkmod.com/rommanager
Follow the instructions I gave in this post....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48583106
and you will have a rooted phone running a custom ROM. No need to reflash the ROM after the wipes. Wiping cache, dalvik and data will NOT erase the ROM, all it'll do is erase any personal settings and downloaded apps.
Mobile Odin can't be used to flash custom ROMs, I think it can be used to flash CWM.... but only if you can find a compatible version in a .tar format.
PhilZ is still your best bet.....you will root your phone and install CWM in one hit.....all from your existing stock recovery. The CWM inPhilZ is NOT temporary, though it WILL be overwritten when you flash the ROM which will contain it's own permanent version of CWM. Just match your phones build version to the PhilZ kernel that you download.......
Why make extra work for yourself by increasing the number of steps you have to take (use framaroot then try to find a compatible CWM) when you can do it in one step?
And as mentioned before.....DON'T use ROM manager on an S2.....it breaks things....specifically recovery....one of your prime goals.....
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM

You could also juse Siyah Kernel, a good alternative to philz:good:

I made big projects of things. As a complete novice within Android, I've read through numerous threads, made project notes, consolidated info and made Mindmaps to understand this.
From my understanding, a kernel (I've seen Siyah mentions on many places) is the interpreter between hardware and the instructions given by the software.
In which way is this comparable to a recovery partition/ROM, namely PhilZ?
I'm sure it's some detail I'm missing, and thanks for the tip.

Thank you once again Keith for your engagement and good tips.
I think the reasons why I am considering the different options, and also trying them out - is to get a broader understanding of Android and the alternative processes as I approach my goal of flashing a new ROM.
1.) So far I installed Framaroot and rooted the device successfully.
2.) I then downloaded Hellcat's kTool and made an EFS backup (and a kernel dump, whatever that is)
3.) Then I installed Titanium Backup and backed up all user + system apps (+data I think)
4.) I then downloaded CWM from www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager > recovery as a zip, booted the stock recovery and started CWM (locally, without replacing stock recovery for some reason), from which I did a full Nandroid backup (with stock recovery intact in this backup, I guess. Device was however rooted so it's not fully original).
I reckon I now just need to download my custom ROM and it's relevant Gapps.
I have read good things about Mobile Odin, and since a while back it supports *.zip files so I believe it is a good alternative for flashing custom ROM's now as well.
PhilZ was a bit intimidating, as there was a general thread and different model based threads in each subforum. They were also in different versions, dates and basebands. Also it appears to be available in a "permanent" download as well as a "temporary", which caused my confusion in the last thread.
I did not know that the recovery was replaced when installing a custom ROM, as I did not know that they contained their own partition of a recovery ROM.
Thanks for the information about not needing to re-flash ROM after the relevant wipes.
Thanks for the discouragement of ROM Manager, I promise to stay away from it.
From my understanding, PhilZ seems to be a modified version of CWM6, which includes ChainFire's Auto Root and some other add-ons as well. Is this a correct understanding?
You don't need to backup system apps/data from Titanium Backup because restoring them on a new rom will definitely cause issues.
Plus in case of a bad flash or something nandroid is always there for you so before doing anything new with the phone always do a nandroid backup.
READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS.
DON'T FORGET TO BACKUP YOUR EFS FILES AND NANDROID BACKUP

You could try the zip in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-2-6-3-0-touch-recovery-t1943592/post50943534
Then you could just flash that using CWM. And yes it does affect things when you flash it as it changes your recovery from CWM to TWRP which is more touch screen based, easier to use as well as being a lot more powerful than a basic CWM. Having changed you may find TWRP doesn't find your previous backups. This is usually as both of those recoveries tend to save them in different places and it's just looking in the wrong place for the files. You can either change the settings to a CWM style restore or just run a new backup through TWRP and delete the old CWM one.

Guys, everytime I flash twrp using ODIN it goes down as a success. And it reboots the phone. But then I shut down the phone and reboot to recovery its once again the default Samsung Recovery. The phone is not rooted. How do I prevent the original recovery from overwriting the TWRP recovery?

Just use the TWRP Manager from the Play Store. Root the phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33305792&postcount=3 and install the manager.
@lurker316: forget TWRP-manager. The only extra step, you need, is a factory reset. So backup all your data before. To avoid reboot after flashing TWRP, either uncheck reboot in Odin or pull out battery after succeeded flash.

Hello mate, I understand your question. However, i want to assure you that the action of rooting itself (Flashing SuperSU zip) will not format ur system. Only does a little modification. Nothing you will notice really. Except the addition of the SuperSU app in your app drawer.
However, actions like Unlocking your boot-loader which you need to get to the rooting aspect (flashing custom recovery), can do some wipes. That is why you are advised to backup first.
On a final note, you are advised to boot into the custom recovery first 'fastboot boot recovery.img' before doing any rooting or whatever so that you can always have a 'safe point' to get your phone back to fully stock working state incase anything goes wrong.
If you have any further doubts, feel free to ask. Cheers!

That's easy. I would advise that instead of flashing custom recovery first, you only boot into it temporarily. This way, when you take full backup, it includes stock recovery also. Also i recommend you do it before rooting (flashing SuperSU zip). This way, you can a CLEAN, stock recovery-no root system to return to. Out-of-the-box state
So instead of flashing custom recovery using
'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'
You use
'fastboot boot recovery.img'
This way it will only boot you into that custom recovery. TWRP. And you can backup by selecting 'backup' then simply choose the memory with more available storage. Preferably the external sd card if you have a high capacity one. Depending on how much stuff u have installed on your phone. You need 3 to 5GB for the backup.
Leave everything checked (exclude data if you want a clean version, but if you want to include your installed apps, settings etc then leave data checked. But of course data takes the more backup space), this is similar to creating a restore point in windows.
After deciding if you want to keep ur current setup in the backup or not, simply slide the slider below to start the backup process. Depending on how fast your memory card is, the process should take 5 to 15 mins MAX.
After doing the backup, you can just flash the SuperSU zip using the Install Zip option in TWRP home screen. After flashing SuperSU zip you reboot and let it work. Your phone might reboot a few times. If you get a prompt just select no. After reboot you have root, now u should decide if you still want to flash TWRP permanently. Because unless you need to do something else like flash another ROM. You do not need it immediately
NOTE: Use 5-14 version of TWRP instead of the older 3-12 or so. This version backs up more partitions. Like the CUST for instance.
Please ask if you don't understand anything. Happy flashing! xD
