[Q] Updating with RUU on rooted phone - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

A friend of mine got this phone after his iPhone 4 got stolen (I'm trying to convert him) and he asked to get the latest firmware so naturally I began to root and installed TWRP on his device (he got a used one that's on HBOOT 2.09) but after he said he doesn't care if it's rooted. I tried to update it through the settings on the phone but, naturally after forgetting about that, it just boots into the recovery. Can I just update it through the RUU or will that bring on complications?

You can use ruu. The ota won't get you the latest firmware, if your HTC dev unlocked I believe you need to lock it before running ruu. If your going to want root/custom recovery I would recommend getting soff it makes things easier from a support perspective.
So many times my friends ask me if I can fix their issue and a lot of my suggestions usually require root.

Just to add to this if you are s-off you do not have to relock your bootloader

How would I relock his bootloader again? It's just a cmd prompt like fastboot oem lock right?

Yes. But I would strongly recommend gaining s-off before ruu. S-off is rather easy to do, either Rumrunner or firewater will work. Then ask you have to do is ruu and install twrp and rom of your choice.

I was going to S-Off it then update but since he's on 2.09 the only S-off method requires Ubuntu and I just didn't want to deal with downloading Ubuntu, dual booting, installing drivers again, then doing the process since my internet is unholy slow (It took like 2 hours just to download the RUU for 4.3)

There are Windows-friendly S-off methods for ALL Hboot versions. Check out my Hboot guide for a list of applicable S-off methods (top link in my sig).

Is my EVO 3D rooted?

I just bought an EVO 3D off craigslist. The phone is unlocked and working with Cricket Wireless and gonna continue using it there and not with Sprint.
When I get into the bootloader. It says *UNLOCKED* 1.5 S=ON.
I was able to get into a CWM recovery.
I think it is rooted but unsure.
Do you have an app called super user or supersu installed?

I just remembered how to check. It seems I am rooted as I was able to use the SU command in terminal and I have superuser installed.
Will I be able to install roms whats all this about 1.4 downgrade and S=Off?

No, you're not rooted. You're unlocked...which is close, but no cigar. You'll have to "relock" your phone if you want to go back to 1.4 hboot with s-off. No biggie...took me half an hour at most. Just make sure you have the files you need at hand plus the live Linux cd/dvd.

You are rooted just fine. Never heard of half assed rooted.
The only thing is your S-On so the partition where the radio/firmware are, you won't be able to change unless you go S-Off.
To answer your question, you can still flash many roms. Some ICS roms will not work because they require the new radio and firmware. Any GB rom and many ICS you can flash right now with no problems.
If you flash the newest 4ext Recovery, it will save you from having to manually flash the boot.img file separately after you install the rom. Although flashing the boot.img through the adb fastboot is no big deal.

No such thing as half-assed root. Either you are rooted or not. He just has S-ON meaning he cannot flash a custom PG86IMG.zip from the bootloader. Only PG86IMG.zip that are signed by HTC. Also he is limited to which partitions he can flash to.
Being unlocked is better than being rooted. Think of it as a low-level root. Like being able to tweak your BIOS settings instead of just being the admin user of Windows.
No it sucks. I spent 3 hours in boot loops the other night because of this f**king S-ON bs. My phone will not flash ANY ICS rims and any kernel that has overclocking capabilities puts me right back in the boot loop even using adb. My Evo 4G was rooted via Revolutionary, but this S-ON sucks. I hate it, but I'm not going to brick my phone to downgrade.

You must be mistaking. S-ON devices are really hard to brick.
If they weren't HTC would be loosing lots of money.
The least trouble you will have to go by downgrasing is having a security warming on your bootloader which can be fixed by flashing the signed PG86IMG.zip file COMPLETELY.
And FYI, Downgrading isnt the only way possible to gain S-OFF.
There's also Juopunutbear S-OFF which can be found HERE.
Which will only require you to return to stock/unlocked with root access. and a simple wire trick.
Good luck in your future bootloops though and have a nice sunny day..

I don't understand why some are telling JeffMeister that he is not or just half rooted. If your bootloader says "hboot 1.5 S-ON Unlocked" and you have SU installed, that means you are rooted. Sure the boot partition is read-only, but theres easy ways around it.
I've had hboot 1.5 S-ON since I had my phone. I've never felt the need to get S-OFF because there are tools to get around that now. I've been flashing ROMS back and forth using various methods with no issues. For hboot 1.5 & S-ON users, the latest and greatest is 4EXT recovery. It did an excellent job at flashing custom roms & kernels as if I was S-OFF.
I suggest you read the basics about flashing and roms first. If you do use 4EXT Recovery, make sure "4EXT Smart Flash" is enabled(it will prompt you on first use).

Rooting my phone

I want to root my phone badly and install cyanagenmod 10.2 on my rezound. But I'm afraid to, I mean I've read everything and I'm pretty sure I could do it easily, but it just scares me of bricking my phone, I upgrade sometime this year, should I wait till I upgrade? And by the way, if I do, do it, its on a Mac...
Sent from my HTC Rezound
There's very little if any chance of bricking unless you go S-Off. Keep it S-On and you'll always be able to recover to stock as long as you have a PC (something that works with Fastboot such as Windows or Ubuntu) and the latest RUU
Thank you, I've read that multiple times, but should I wait till I go for a upgrade? Or would you say root it sometime soon? And is it possible on mac though... I have the SDK, and all the necessary stuff on my mac, or at least I think...

ruu requires s-off bud...also if you soft brick while s-on there is no fix what so ever...all soft brick fixes work in s-off only.....but yes you actually root via a custom recovery on the rez...if s-on all you have to do is fastboot flash said recovery which i can link you to and run the su installer

Really it depends on the hboot and radios his phone is on, right? Bc say he were on the global leak 2.27 hboot with 2.22 radios he could still apply that ruu. However if on 2.28 hboot with 2.23 radios there technically is no official ruu so would need have be s_off..

he could fastboot to 2.28 without that provided OTA fille...ruu is actually an exe program... but i suggest against it honestly....but if downgrading at all requires s-off....he can root without s-off and flash roms....so long as he does use s-on instructions....(which to be honest s-on users have a harder time flashing custom roms for the reason of having to fastboot all the time)
Plus S-Off is so easy now... No wire trick

I guess what the OP needs is some words of encouragement so let me just say this : unlocking the bootloader through HTC dev will not brick your phone, flashing a custom recovery will not brick your phone, flashing a custom rom will not brick your phone, getting the most out of your rezound will not brick your phone. Btw happy new year everybody

Sorry about that, I've read so many forum's, but I just haven't gotten to do it, or afraid of doing it, I know unlock bootloader and so on so forth... But after that... I know the HTC developers website provides a way for you to unlock the boot loader which allows you to install a custom ROM but I've seen other people do it differently, I've heard mac88 has a great one on rooting HTC rezound, but its supposed to have pictures but it was taken down... Or at least the pictures and I suck at reading it and doing it sometimes... I do better by seeing... Any help for a noob guys... Please help..

Here ya go! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2585885 Much easier than the Juopunut s-off which requires Linux and the use of a wire to short out contacts on your phone.
Edit: Of course you need to be unlocked and rooted, and have a custom rom and kernel already installed to use this method. So it may not be easier for you.

It appears you have a lot more reading to do before you start making these changes to your phone. If not careful you can turn it into a useless brick. I would suggest reading through as many development threads as you can to get more comfortable.
BTW, you won't be doing any of this from your Mac. Find a Windows or Linux computer to use.

Help Unlocking Bootloader on HTC One Max, Verizon

I have an HTC One Max from Verizon, stock, unrooted, odex, running HBOOT 2.49.0000
I am trying to attempt to unlock the bootloader so i can S-OFF
When i use HTC's DEV site, and submit my token, it tells me that my MID is not allowed.
When i use rumrunner i get this error (see atttached image)
I have tried may things posted on XDA and utube with no success.
if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
Use Firewater and download it using internet explorer. I just got S-OFF on my VZW device 2.49 HBOOT

Ok again this is an HTC one max and I am trying to unlock the boot loader. I can't s-off until I unlock the boot loader first. If you have an HTC one max (not the HTC one m7 or m8), then tell me how you managed to unlock the bootloader.
You cant unlock the bootloader at HTCdev with this devicebecause of carrier regulations so you use firewater to do that. It unlocks your bootloader and gives you s-off
I need to change my sig to show the One Max lol
Also from doing some reading rumrunner isnt effective on HBOOTs after 2.46 or so

Sorry stupid Firefox entered the same thread twice. I will again attempt to use Firewater, but it didn't work for me the last attempt I made. Thanks for the advice and I will follow up.
I have a verizon one max HBOOT 2.49 unlocked bootloader by using Firewater http://firewater-soff.com/
After you read what it is for on the homepage click on the Instructions/Download Tab and of the 3 methods given, use the "Instructions (WeakSauce method - some m8 models and maybe others)" method.
Basically you need to download the app called Weaksauce it is in the steps for the method above and at the link -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699089
When you install the app, it will give you root. install SuperSu from the market and begin the process of Firewater.
Note:
1. When you boot your device make sure weaksauce roots your device before you being to use firewater (you can download the Root Checker app from the market to verify that you have root before you start)
2. Download firewater using Internet Explorer
3. Follow the instructions carefully from both weaksauce and firewater
good luck

You will need to have the stock recovery in order to take an OTA. In my case for Kit Kat OTA, I was unlocked rooted and S-OFF and still got the update. You will probably lose root but unlock and S-OFF will remain.

That is correct, you need the stock recovery and stock rom, you can be rooted and will lose it, but S-OFF will remain. Root is easy to get back so it's no big deal
I just delt with this exact problem. U won't be able to get any while rooted. I ended up having to install the RUU via fastboot and lock my bootloader in order to get Ota updates. I still consider myself to be a noob. I think you gotta have the stock recovery installed as well.

[Q] Unlocked bootloader, but still S-on after trying many things

Hello to all.
I have not rooted a phone in quite a while, since the original Evo. Here's the rundown of what I've been experiencing lately:
I unlocked the bootloader using the HTC dev method, it went smooth. To obtain s-off (I was on the latest OTA of 3.17.651.5), I attempted rumrunner. Everything went fine until I got an error with rumrunner. I then tried the windroid toolkit, flashed TWRP (v2.7.1.0) which was a success. When I flashed superuser from windroid, it rebooted me to recovery to flash the zip file "superuser.zip", but it did nothing. I looked on this forum and found a supersu zip file. I tried flashing a couple versions of the supersu (1.25, 2.01) but no luck. For every one I attempted to flash, I would get the message that said successful but no s-off. After confirming the flash, it would say "flashing file 1 of 1", but then switch to saying "flashing file 1 of 0". I ended up flashing a rom (CM11-20131217), which put the phone into a bootloop (I got this resolved by downgrading to TWRP 2.6.3.0, flashing the kernel for the CM11, then flashing the rom, which of course still kept me S-on.)
So basically, I have an unlocked bootloader, with TWRP 2.6.3.0 as a recovery, on CM11-20131217 build, yet I'm still S-on. Is there a certain version of supersu or superuser that I should be flashing? How can I achieve S-off?

You have to run Rumrunner again. But flash stock rooted before you do (I don't know if it'll work while on CM).
Thanks for the quick reply. I will give that a shot, hope it does work. Is there a certain version of that I should flash before running rumrunner again?

Okay, thanks!
After getting some time here and there, I attempted to flash a few stock rooted roms with no luck. I'm not sure if it's because of the rom that I am currently on. not s-off or what. A lot of the stock root roms I do find have a requirement that you must be s-off to flash. I even tried running RUU's (4.13.651.4 and 3.17.651.4) for specific roms, but they gave me errors and would not continue each time. I remember when rooting and gaining s-off was much simpler than this lol. I don't even know if it is worth continuing to keep trying.
Check the link below for a ROM that is S-on friendly. Make sure you follow the directions in the thread to get it installed. Once you've done this you can go for S-off, at which time you should be able to flash whatever ROM you'd like.

Thanks for that! It worked with meanbean. I ran rumrunner again and it gave me an error, saying something about an update on rumrunner.us. I gave firewater a shot, and after it said "the first bottle is open...chugging", the screen stays blank for a while and firewater instructs me to try again and ends the process. From what I read last night around my searches, I'm supposed to get a notification on the evo asking for superuser permission but that didn't happen. I'm guessing this is due to the wrong supersu being flashed.
Glad I got a little further, I'm just going to play around with it until something gives and I am s-off
There's a setting in the su app that will let you grant su access to all apps automatically and without a prompt. That should get rid of that problem.
I wouldn't go with those settings for any other purpose though, obviously.

I went into the SuperSU app and selected where the default access was set to grant. I ran firewater again with the normal method and weaksauce method with no luck, it's still doing the same thing. USB debugging is on, and the drivers are installed correctly as well.

Disable antivirus software on phone and pc.

Weaksauce is an exploit for Verizon phones that can't be unlocked with HTC Dev so it's pointless to try it on the EVO LTE.

Also, while you need htc sync manager to unlock your boot loader, it usually really screws with any other adb tools, so uninstall that too.

This. Also make sure you're using USB 2.0 ports, as 3.0 ports can cause connectivity issues.

First thing is that in order to run any RUU device boot loader must be 're-locked to do this enter into fastboot plug in to pc and within your Android unlocker folder that u use to unlock your device hold shift and right click anywhere in the folder to open command window then type : fastboot oem lock . This will lock the bootloader, now you will be able to run RUU. Just keep in mind that you may only go up Android versions levels ,, running RUU will stabilize your device and fixes the sectors which u may have damaged during the moding in the RAM .. Now for obtaining S-OFF the only option for you (since u upgraded) is to use DirtyRacun witch uses Ubuntu Live CD method and it does work. ***Now, if you just want unlocked bootloader with SU permission so u can flash rooms (not firmware or radio) and don't care about S-OFF then let me know to show you the options available at this time .. I repeat *you may only go up in android versions , in case that is necessary to go down then you need to deal with the CID. By switching and modifying the CID only then you are allowed to downgrade the Android Build versions
Dirty Racun isn't the only option for S-off
He's already unlocked his bootloader and has root. He's on the latest firmware version for the old partition layout: it's well-documented that methods like Rumrunner work.
OP, here's the thread for Rumrunner. I suggest giving it a read:thumbup:

Thanks, I will look at that now. I tried disabling the antivirus as stated above and that didn't work either, so maybe this thread will give more detail to help me gain S-off.

Sorry for the late reply. Correct, I'm using mean bean. I'm using wifi while doing all of this, my service provider is AT&T.

Excuse my ignorance but but how did you get sprints HTC evo 4g LTE codename jewel to work on at&t. I didn't know you could do that. (hint: are you sure you have the right phone? )
Anyways. As long as its an HTC it should be fine right? The problem would be the same.

To run the RUU from Windows 7 64 bit, be sure to install latest HTC sync manager and connect phone to finalize driver installation. Then try again.

I assumed that if the phone rooted and adb and fastboot work than the drivers were installed? Some times the ruu comes up and ask me to install with recomended settings
Htc ruu won't work without sync manager, period.

Also, if your bootloader is already unlocked, you will have to relock it for RUU to work.

Actually, I don't have HTC Sync installed, and it surely works for me. Sync manager allows for the drivers to be installed.
Now having issues getting s-off! Any idea?

Some more info would be helpful. What ROM are you on? What Hboot do you currently have, and what is your radio (firmware) version?
It's important to provide as much information from the start so we can help you. There are currently five ways to gain S-off on the HTC EVO 4G LTE depending upon what software/firmware you currently have.

Ya that would help wouldn't it
Software 3.17.651.5 710RD
Factory rooted rom (flashed su 2.01 zip)
Hboot 2.09 0000
I tried rum runner and it gets to about 10 runs and stops
I did realize I don't have busybox but the installers crash and the phone reboots

Ill need to check this one out. Thank you
no dice! still s-on
if it is of any concern my s-on shows RL after it?
Why don't you just do the RUU back to factory stock and try it from the beginning? It seems like it might save you some time over trying to troubleshoot what is actually wrong.
Try rumrunner again. That's what finally worked for me one time. Rumrunner didn't take the first time and it didn't make a difference running it a second or third time. Firewater didn't work either, but I had success when I went back to rumrunner.
My worthless theory is that, for whatever reason, RR wasn't able to complete a specific critical step, but that FW was able to handle it. But then FW encountered issues on a subsequent step. Going back to RR worked because, this time, FW already took care of the task that RR couldn't do the first time around.
Of course I don't have a stack of evo's sitting around waiting to be s-offed, so I didn't get much of a chance to test my theory. I seem to remain s-off now even after ruu.
Remember to wipe well. It will help prevent a stinky ROM as well as awkward social situations.
I ruu to the one that had sence 5 and then rooted and ran Firewater (2 TIMES) and I'm good! Thank you for all your help
