Restoring SMS stalls boot - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just wiped and installed a new rom, now when I try and restore my backup in titanium "messaging 4.2.1-en...(SMS/MMS PREFS)" and I reboot it fails to restart and gets stuck at the loading screen, so I have to re-wipe and start again.
Is there any other way I can restore my SMS? Something strange is going on here seeing as it's still a 4.2.1 ROM!
Thanks

I do. But I can't restore it because of MD5 checksum mismatch.

[Q] Is my nandroid restore not working or am I doing something wrong?

Ok I made a nandroid backup on my s2 Gti9100 a few days ago
I then tried to do a titanium backup and my s2 rebooted, I then recieved fcs from a load of apps constatly making it impossible to do anything. I was barely able to turn off, i had to keep taping ok untill i got to power off window.
Then I booted into cwm, wiped cache partition and dalvic and did nandroid restore, i then booted up, no fcs, but all my apps on sd came up in my app drawer and home screen with that grey android icon saying this app is not installed on your phone!
went to recovery again wiped cache and dalvic and data/factory reset
then restored system and data and still had the same problem!
what do i do
please help
p.s. i have not partitioned anything for use in apps like link2sd, no ex whatever
are you doing restore from Advance restore, as you mentioned " then restored system and data....." or from the main restore menu?
Did not you use the Titanium backup for your applications?
Do Not restore System Data is the usual answer to this problem .

Yes of cosrse, if he is doing his restore from Titanium back up,
but OP's concern is about his Nandroid backup, which is a photocopy of his earlier ROM, NO option to avoid system Data restore unles he goes into the advance restore of CWM....

yes i am using advanced restore
and it was titanium backup that caused my problem in the first place, while i was trying to backup
all my settings are stil here aswell as the apps in internal. I think only the apps moved to sd are messed up
could it be a problem with .androidsecure? should i delete this and let nandroid replace it after restore, or does nandroid even backup that?

I dont mind what method you think of aslong as I can get back to that point
would it be a good idea to extract app backups out of nandroid using titanium, just an idea, i just saw it in its options
if its complicated please explain as im not a phone expert
it is not complicated but a good idea if you have Titanium backup pro (donated version), otherwise you cant...when you selct that option you will automaticaly get prompted the list of applications to install....
By the way why are you selecting advance option for restoring....?
do like this, wipe cache, wipe data fatory reset, and in advance wipe dalvik cache,
go back to Backup and restore select restore at main menu (no advance restore) and select your backup and restore....finish all your stuffs are back....

hmmm, that is why you are not getting your apps back when you do nandroid restore...
your backup was not done smoothly, only your system data backed up well not user apps...bad luck
so ive lost it all?
Should i delete .androidsecure, is it just junk files now?
great news!!! turns out all my personal data was kept, I just reinstalled everything and it wae back to normal
p.s. i think the cause of nandroid backup fail was lack of space on my phone, how can i backup to external sd?
If you use the CWM app you can choose between internal/external SD for the location of the backup.

Wipe is not needed when restoring in cwm. hope it helps.

Thanks very much for the help! much appreciated

ok thanks
was just worried because of the size 1.7GB and no apps on sd
but i suppose ill manage

[Q] Recover Data From a Boot Loop Backup?

Hi guys,
Firstly I'll say that the boot loop isn't directly the issue. All I had to do was reset the user data and it fired straight up, but I don't want to lose my data so I'll explain what has happened and hopefully you can help me.
The boot loop was actually triggered by simply selecting a theme in MIUI, and because of this I had not backed up in CWM. I didn't think something I'd done so many times before would actually do this, and it caught me off guard.
After trying a few other things like clearing cache etc., it became clear that a user data reset was my only option. However, I decided to do a backup in CWM before performing this, on the possibility that I may be able to retrieve this data somehow afterwards.
So what I have now is a working phone and broken backup that when restored results in a boot loop. What I would like to know is if there is anything I can do with this backup to restore my settings, texts, app data etc. or if it's simply taking up space.
I have ADB installed and working, and out of interest I used shell to find out what was running whilst the system was caught in the boot loop. I forget the name now, but I recall there was a process that was using most of CPU. Killing it did nothing unfortunately and it fired straight up again. I must warn you that this is pretty much the extent of my knowledge with shell aside from navigating the file system.
With Titanium Backup Pro (paid version) you can restore your apps using an option in that to extract from CWM backup...
If you are back to the same version of the MIUI rom you can try restoring system apps too one by one monitoring the issue....
Wow, thanks for that; very useful to know! I do actually have the paid version of Titanium Backup so I'll give it a go.

that means your CWM backup was unsuccessfull,
did you watch the process, it reach the end till creating MD5 checksum? and completed successfully?

I did, yes. I also have many other backups in there that restore correctly but do not show up under "Advanced Restore" for some reason.
then try Titanium backup, you may sometimes need to copy the backup to externel SD clockworkmode folder to detect from TB...
goodluck

[Q] md5 mismatch

Hi guys,
I know there are several threads on this topic, but no solution worked for me.
Yesterday I made a nandroid backup and everything went fine. Than I installed MiniCMSandwich, which works very great. But then I wanted to restore my old backup and got a md5 mismatch.
I tried this and this method, but they didn't work.
In my backup folder are only these files:
data.yassf2.img
system.yassf2.img
.android_secure.vfat.tar
There is no nandroid.md5 or any other file
What have I got to do to fix my nandroid backup?
By the way, I didn't rename it!
Please help
Michi
Ok Terminal Emulator method worked after trying a bit, but now I've got another problem! I created a new thread for that
You could have made new backup and replace the data and system stuff...? Or it might not work?
OK could you explain that pls? What exactley have I got to do.
I tried to take system and cache out of another backup before and put it in the (bricked) backup folder instead of the system and cache of bricked up. Then I tried the terminal method again, but theres md5 mismatch!
What have I got to do?
But... if you have an older backup, couldn't you just restore that one? Just saying.......

Yes I restored it and it works fine, but that was a backup immediatly after the ics update and all apps installed. There are no settings from apps, etc. Can I restore Data and Apps out of my old Backup? Is there an App?
What I can say for sure is that you cannot "mix" files from different nandroid, and that's because of the md5 checksum itself. If you mix the files, you'll always get an error.
I'm sorry, but I don't know if there's a way to "extrapolate" your apps and settings from another nandroid. Think you'll have to reinstall all your apps

Did you start the backup from the app itself? md5 checksum mismatches happen a lot when you do... nandroid backups should ALWAYS be done via the recovery menu to avoid this problem. I'm afraid md5 checksum errors are non-recoverable, but do not take my word for granted
As for the titanium backups, check the /extSdcard/data/com.keramidas.titaniumbackup folder is there and has not been moved or modified in some way (remember titanium backs up to the internal phone memory by default, if you flashed another ROM and didnt backup this folder the backups wont be able to be restored)

[Q] CWM infomation

Dear XDAers,
I would like to ask whether if I nandroid backup my xxlsj rom, can I restore the backup in another rom (get back my app data, like titanium backup?)? Or is it going to be back to the xxlsj rom?
And can I flash my backup (lsj) without flashing lsj then restore backup?
Thanks

yes in cwm backup & restore go to advance restore and you can restore boot, system, data, cache, sd-ext...
you can restore only data from there. But you might get fc's on some apps if you will restore data backed up in xxlsj and restore in AOSP or AOKP... may be sometimes phone sticks at boot also...
so watch what you are doing...

Alright, so doing a Nandroid backup means backing up the whole OS? When restoring the backup on AOSP or AOKP, etc, means it will still go back to the backuped ROM?

Yes if you are restoring from internal or external sd it will restore to that ROM in which you had made backup and if you go to advance restore option, you can restore data only...
