Meh.. somehow not as sexy as PC with Window on the case. You know, the Porn level is so different..
It would be cool if you can do the same for the front bezel.
yes only you have it
What a waste of a Z Ultra. Seeing the photo hurt me.
The back of the glass has a powder coat that gives it its black shine, I simply went over it with a Stanley blade for 30 minutes and it came off a piece of cake
The only thing keeping the phone waterproof is some adhesive tape that you'll find holding down any phone display which was a shock to see something so basic to keep the water out.
I only Tried it because I've got an Expensive vinyl gold carbon fibre film coming and a glass screen protector in the post tomorrow so if it did go wrong id be covering it up anyway. its a shame there's no motherboard to look at though just a big ass battery
not digging it... but congrats?
Do you take off all the panels on your car, exposing all the wires and structural metal too?
You've turned a sexy device into an eyesore.
^^ @ avetny, BEST picture in the thread, made me ****king laugh out hard.
The .GIF with Putin smiling says it all.
I'm glad your happy with it's uniqueness but to my eyes it has completely ruined the aesthetic appeal of the device. Like it looks homemade and not in a good way.

Hi Guys,
Just bought an xperia s off the flea bay, was just wondering either side of the transparent buttons are what looks like hairline cracks?, are these meant to be there or is there some sort of plastic protection cover to be removed as the front does look a little scratched and was hoping there was a plastic film on it for me to remove. I've also noticed that the seller had a screen protector on there, I removed as it was badly fitted but i'm pretty sure there looks to be another one on there i've tried removing but doesnt seem to want to come off and dont want to use force just incase its not supposed to come off.
Thanks guys in advance.

Man don't you dare to remove that cover it's the shatter proof for the screen. Also the grid you see within the transparent strip is the supposed to be working as the antenna for the phone so not to worry for that.
Enjoy the new phone its freaking awesome.....
I bet u'll love it.....

I removed my shatterproof sheet. The screen responsibility improved so much. But when I hard anything plugged in, be it the charger, headphones or AUX cable. The lower part of the screen would act funny.
So I had to put an other screenprotector on it to fix it. However, with this new protector my screen is super smooth and attracts pretty much no dust anymore.

May I ask - how did you remove the shatterproof sheet? Day 2 of having this phone and already a MASSIVE scratch on the screen - haven't even dropped it yet either -.-
I generally don't like using cases on my phones but since I paid so much for my Xperia S I have been using one. I was curious how people who don't use cases on it have had their phone look like. How has the Xperia S survived the day to day normal wear and usage?
i dont have a case, cause i dont want to cover my beautiful XS..hehe..but i have a pouch for my XS.

I didn't use a case at first but a porch, and I hit a table with the lower left edge of my s (really soft, I didn't even drop it, I just put it down quickly) and it cracked and the paint peeled of. I drew over it with nail polish but I have been using a hard case ever since PLUS a porch.
And I still get a lot of scratches on the housing where the cut outs of my case are (mostly around the USB and headphone plugs, even though I treat my phone really carefully)
I wouldn't recommend using the phone without a case, it scratches way too easy.

Man this phone body is like a tin can
Me myself didn't like a case as well
I usually put my phone in the side pocket alongside with headset and it scratched. Hopefully i have it black so the scratch is not really visible.
And do not ever put your phone in the same pocket with your car keys. In my own experience it can dent your phone pretty bad

I got a white Sony Xperia S a couple of days after the release. Never used any cases, I really hate 'em unless they add functionality.
I dropped my Xperia S only once on tiles, but it wasn't a very high drop. You can only see the scuffs if you look for them. They're really tiny.
Also, the only other scratch I have on my Xperia S is just my fault. I tried putting it in a tin case-like thing I had on a tripod which I had made for a smaller phone, but what I didn't realise was that the edges were very sharp.
My conclusion: Unless you like dropping your phone on the floor or scratch it on purpose with very sharp items, the Xperia S probably won't have any scratches at all. Even in white. The screen too is fine and the Sony (Ericsson) logo on the back isn't scratched either.
I've had mine for 5 months. It once dropped from a very low height facing down, so the screen kinda had a "scatter" from the side (volume up height) and the line goes until the very top of the USB port. It is only seeable at certain angles. There are also tiny scratches, but they are on the screen protector, so.... It once dropped from a slightly higher height than the first, but nothing happened.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
I am not surprised that the white one has scratch problems. My buddy had a white HTC Hero with teflon coating and it looked pretty bad after a year or so.
My Xperia s has a thin case so the outside is mint. The screen has really minute scratches that all screens get that you can only see in certain light but no biggy. I never rock a screen protector. I would like to go case free but seeing peoples comments it makes me a bit nervous.

The Xperia S already has a screen protector on it from the factory. Going case free isn't a problem for me at all
I wouldn't remove this protector though. I read somewhere that it could make capacitive button sensitivity less.
I use some cheap pocket-like condom to keep my sola semi-safe.
Back in 2010 when I just bought a brand new HTC Desire I immediately wanted to protect it. I mean PROTECT IT.
I bought the Krusell Orbiflex thingie (was like uberexpensive) and was pretty happy with it until... after few months I realized that the screen was actually scratched by the case itself!
Then I sent over the HTC to the service point (because of broken camera or something). I repeated the procedure 5 times, so they swapped the unit into a new one.
I was happy and stuff and put the new, shiny device into the same case .
After few weeks my brand new HTC was scratched again in the very same spot beacuse of the case. AGAIN.
Maybe a little bit OT but kind of funny story it was .

People don't stay with their phones for much longer anyway, so i don't think it's a good thing use cases...
My only scratch is off all places on the glass in the centre of he screen on my s3 after taking it into a repair shop without my case on. Was just glad to have my phone back so let the guy off with the scratch... normally use a otterbox defender case.

I was searching fora good screen protector for the phone... Xperia z ultra need one for front and back.. but could not find one... ordered one tampered glass screen protector from ebay and waiting for its delivery. then i found this campaign a coating that make phone scratch resistant. we can apply it on front and back.. It costs 20 to 25 dollars only..Here is what they have to say............
So what is Liquid Sapphire and how does it work ?
Liquid Sapphire is a DIY coating that stops your phone, tablet or any touch screen from getting scratched, ditch your old plastic shield protector and get the full clarity of your screen using liquid sapphire, it’s invisible, contains man-made liquid sapphire which is second only to diamonds in hardness. Liquid Sapphire is a one time Nanotechnology application and does not need to be topped up.
Liquid Sapphire improves the clarity of your screen, the effect is caused by the Sapphires in liquid which will be a technology used in all touch screen devices over the years to come.
Specifications
Works with any touchscreen device and camera lenses.
Scratch resistant & waterproof.
Life Span : Permanent, Cannot be removed .(It can only be removed by commercial polishing or commercial acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid.)
Invisible coating
External Coating : Yes
Internal Coating : No
Shelf Life : 18 months from opening
Non Toxic
Non Hazardous.
Liquid Amour is a lacquer, Liquid Sapphire is a invisible coating that contains Sapphire. Auto Glass coatings will be waterbased and are no where near in the same league, to coat it with Liquid Sapphire would cost more than the glass even at cost !
Sapphire is second to diamonds in the scale of hardness in natural mineral stones.
Transparency and hardness Sapphire is not only highly transparent to wavelengths of light between 150 nm (UV) and 5500 nm (IR) (the human eye can discern wavelengths from about 380 nm to 750 nm[37]), but is also extraordinarily scratch-resistant. Sapphire has a value of 9 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
Hardness Example 10 diamond 9 sapphire 8 beryl 7.5 garnet 6.5-7.5 steel file 7.0 quartz (amethyst, citrine, agate) 6 feldspar (spectrolite) 5.5-6.5 most glass 5 apatite 4 fluorite 3 calcite, a penny 2.5 fingernail 2 gypsum 1 talc

Non Toxic ?!?? no I will not buy it
If the OP buys one and succeed to apply this with good results.. I might.... perhaps, give it a thought

I think this is great once you remove the ASF at the back because its gonna coat the glass at the back... But the problem is the front, I think that this will only be beneficial if applied directly to the glass but not with our ASF since its technically just a film and not as solid as glass below it... So you'll have to remove the front ASF to get the full benefits of this nanotech liquid screen protector
Says right on his site under application guide
"Liquid sapphire does not work on plastic or metal"
wont work on our phone unless we remove the ASF

I buffed my shine off with fine steel wool (grade 00) , then buffed it over a final time with ultra fine steel wool (grade 0000). It's available at any Home Depot. It leaves you with a slick matte finish, no gloss, no excessive fingerprints.
I removed my back cover to do this, but its not necessary. It's actually quite easy to remove, almost like a removable back cover. I just pushed my fingernail in and got a gap, then proceeded around the edges popping each clip as I went... Alternatively you could just put tape on your camera lense to avoid scratching it.

Sorry, I have my old GS3, so not great pics. I set it at 640x480 to avoid too large files. They do show its lighter, a charcoal color now vs. the original black and you can see its now matte and not shiney. A few small scratches at there, that I still need to rub out with the ultra fine steel wool.
Set 2 - new account here and it wont let me post more than once every 5 mins.
If I had thought about it, I would have done this with my S3 over a year ago... HATE THE SHINE...
The big take here, other than you can smack the shine off with steel wool, is that the back cover is easily removable, so I would assume 3rd party replacements with real soft touch back covers are a real possibility. I hate to have a case, but a new back cover with soft touch plastic ala Nexus 7 (either rubbery like '12 or soft like '13) would make this phone perfect... Whoot!

I just got my Z Ultra GPE. I have the incipio dualshine case for it but the included screen protector is not very good and I ended up with a pretty poor application. I ordered a glass protector from Glass-M but it won't be here for a couple weeks. Do you guys think I can get by without a protector without scratches until the glass comes? I only really put it in my pocket. One edge of the protector I have didn't adhere properly and I'm afraid fuzz/dirt will get under and scratch it. Other option is to just use my S4 until I get the better protector.
I've had my Ultra since september and i don't have a single (noticeable) scratch on the front (i'm not using any additional protection). You'll be fine, but accidents happen, so it's not possibble to tell if yours will be scratch free in a few weeks. I do have a couple of scratches on the back though, but i couldn't care less.

@hamdogg mentioned an easy way to apply the protector, use water - added bones is the phone is waterproff
you should be able to remove and reapply the protector.
I've used mine since September with no case or added protection. Like @LordManhattan no scratches or wear at all. Dropped it a couple of times without issue.
Worth adding I dont use a stylus or pencil or anything other than fingers, pretty sure that would degrade the film pretty quick.

I can't see scratches on mine when I am using it. But turn of the screen and swing the phone side to side until the light hits it just right and I see all kinds of fine scratches. How easy is it to scratch? I'd say very easy. And it's not just fine scratches that plague this phone but also the fading of the oleophobic coating. You'll notice the part of the screen where you constantly touch gets rougher compared to the rest of the screen. In the end I'm just waiting for mine to scratch to the point where I will have to remove the ASF.

Ok thank you all for the feedback. I decided to just use it. If it's something that will scratch in 2 weeks of light use and no accidents I'd just assume return it.

Really not sure what to think
I really dont know what to think of it i wanted to buy the z ultra (the normal one..not google play edition because i cant get it in germany)
and the only thing that holds me back is..i can live with a not so well camery..i only take a few photos but i wouldnt be able to live with a device that just takes every single little fingerprint and scratches easily some people say it scratches easily ..some dont i wouldnt use anything else then my fingers to operate it..and carry it safely in my handbag
is it acceptable or really that bad? else i will probably go with a note 3 or a nexus 5 + nexus 7..so i have a small device on the go and a nexus 7 for watching streams/videos at home
I've got some scratches in the middle of my screen from one mistake placement in the same pocket as my keys. Surprised since the screen is supposed to be fairly resilient, I'll be looking into a protector shortly.
that kinda scares me x.x even if i would never put the device next to my keys..it will be most likely in that power cas einside my handbag x.x

You didn't scratch the screen. You scratched the anti shatter film. It's still annoying though, so yeah, you should probably get a second protector, or just remove the ASF and go naked (it's glass after all, so it won't actually scratch unless you're really unlucky) or put the new third party protector on the glass. One protector is bad enough (how it feels to touch), so i can't imagine using two
