Okay, here's the biz. My wife's phone needs updated, and I'm not sure of the best way to do it. She's rooted and I want to keep it that way, as she needs her wifi-tether.
She's not s-off. I tried using moonshine and rumrunner to no avail, even though I had met all pre-requisites. rumrunner recommended I flashed a less-stable kernel and try it again. I'm not real interested in doing that.
I was trying to s-off so i could flash the OTAs that are on xda.
I have studied posts on here for about 4 hours now and have not come up with a solid answer.
The only things we need are root and the newest 3.17- firmware and possibly radios. Can anyone send me to the right place?
Can I just ruu the newest software?
Please. Thanks will be given.
Phone specs:
freshly ruu android 4.0.4
sense 4.1
software 2.13.651.1
s-on
bootloader unlocked
hboot 1.19.000
radio 1.12.11.0803
Check the top link in my sig. There is a link to all applicable RUU's at the bottom of the first post (I recommend reading the entire thread), including the 3.17 RUU and the newer 4.13 RUU. Running the RUU will update your software, firmware, HBOOT, etc. The RUU is probably the quickest way to get everything up to date, in my opinion. Just download whichever RUU you want to install to your computer, connect your phone to your computer while the phone is booted to the OS, double-click the RUU file and follow the on-screen instructions on your computer. You may also want to install HTC Sync to your computer, as well. After running the RUU you'll need to unlock your bootloader again, install a custom recovery and SuperSU for root access. If you want to S-off the phone once it's updated, again, check the top link in my sig for further info.

I tried using the ruu for the newest 4.XX and it wouldn't work. I guess I should just use 3.17.xxx?
NVM, I forgot to relock the bootloader before I tried the ruu.... now it's working. Thanks

Hey I'm trying to use windroid to unlock the bootloader again, but it's not recognizing the phone's status.. any help on unlocking that bloader?
Again, NVM I had to authorize the debugging on my phone.
Okay, I've ruu to the newest ota, which is 4.XX- and I have TWRP 2.7.0 but I can't figure out how to root it. I have tried flashing both of the super user files from the linked page in your sig, to no avail. I tried to flash them from twrp. Nothing. One app says it needs binaries, and the other one doesn't open. Not sure how to root at this point? I tried to push the superuser.zip files through adb shell and that didn't work either. stumped...

So recently I decided to delve into the world of Rooting. So i did a little research and finally decided it was time.
So I rooted my Evo 4G LTE using regawmod
Well it worked all fine and dandy. Until I decided to unroot and use an RUU so that i could root in a different method and flash a ROM on it then.
First i went into SuperSU and told it to unroot. I wasn't worried about trying to remove the tampered tag as i was just goin to root the device again. But SuperSU told me that the unroot failed.
So i continue to find a different method, more thorough. I came across a guide on HTC hacks on how to unroot the device, reflashes the original ROM on it and as well removes the tampered tag. I try it and use the correct (or so i think) RUU (the 1.13.651.1). The RUU told me it couldn't do it and gave me the 155 error, wrong ROM image as i have found out. In the actual RUU process it says to update from 1.13.651.1_R2 to 1.13.651.1 (I'm not sure if that is pertinent information)
So i recover boot the phone back up and it doesn't seem to have any problems. Except SuperSU is gone (tried reinstalling and got the no SuperSU binary error when i ran it)
So any help as to how to flash my phone back to normal so i can go about my business?

I'm struggling with all the terminology and methods with flashing. Basically I just wanted root, so I read several different guides and got a rooted status and managed to install the Amon Ra recovery. However my bootloader (also called HBOOT - is that correct?) shows tampered / unlocked now. Basically, I want to flash back to the most current build and try again.
Would the link on the Android Police forums to download RUU 4.03.605.2 be latest Verizon build as if it were fresh out of the box?
I checked on the wiki, but didn't see anything for the Rezound there.
Also, to use this utility, I relock my bootloader using HTCDev and then move this zipped file to my sd card and reboot to the bootloader either using adb or the power + volume down, correct? It will see the zip file and begin flashing or do I run an executable from my PC with the phone connected? I'm not S-Off because I figured that is way above my head at this point.
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
The tampered just means you have a custom recovery like Amon Ra installed.

Having S-OFF negates the need to relock your bootloader.
You should be able to flash the "RUU" zip file with your phone in its current condition.
If you do some research in this section in the S-OFF threads, you'll get some good info about not re locking after s-off.
Re-locking is only necessary if you don't have s-off.

to reinstall the RUU, first make sure you have fastboot on your PC and your phone is in the fastboot menu of the bootloader and connected to your PC. It should say "fastboot USB". (If you don't have the HTC drivers installed, download HTC Sync 3.0 and that should install it. I haven't gotten it to work on Windows 8 so if you use Windows 8 use these drivers)
Open a command prompt, change the directory to where your fastboot.exe is (example: cd c:\fastboot_directory). Type in 'fastboot oem lock'. Your phone will restart, then boot up. Turn it off, reboot to the bootloader and make sure it says *RELOCKED* on the top. Then, go back to fastboot and in your cmd window, type in 'fastboot oem rebootRUU'. Your phone will reboot and show a black screen with a grey HTC logo. Copy the RUU (doesn't matter if it's named PH98IMG.zip or something else) into the same folder as fastboot.exe and type in 'fastboot flash zip ruu_zip_name.zip' (obviously replacing ruu_zip_name.zip with the zip's actual name). The terminal will start sending the zip and details will be displayed on your computer screen. Your phone will also have a progress bar. Once the terminal on your computer says it's finished, you can reboot your phone.
I am currently S-On, unlocked, running Newts One XXX with the Global OTA (4.03.605) Sense 4 Kernel. I would now like to get the 4.03.605.2 firmware installed. Would the procedure described above work for my situation or is there another method I can use.
My next leap is to go S-off but for now I would just like to get the firmware updated before reflashing Newts.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, you can use the above method fine. However, going S-Off is very easy. It seems like a daunting task, but if you read the directions thoroughly it is very easy. I used the .5 version of Juopunutbear and it worked without a hitch. You are already unlocked and rooted, so if you S-Off, you won't have to do it all over again. From there you can flash the RUU, flash a FLASHABLE version of AR 3.15, then reflash any rom that you want. You will only get the benefit from global with roms that are built aroung the .2 base, but you will get updated radios. I haven't honestly noticed much of a difference with the new radios though.

Flash stock recovery here's a link http://www.mediafire.com/?wb21d2gdurui2c6 then lock bootloader. (Fastboot OEM lock)
After locking bootloader(cuz your s-on) rename the ruu you downloaded from android police To PH98IMG put on your sd return sd phone boot into bootloader run update, if it stops and powers off mid update remove battery and start it again, It flashed the hboot first then you gotta go back In And finish the update.

Just to clarify: when you reboot using "adb reboot" or power + volume down, are you booting into the bootloader or hboot? I've read the guides but still a little confused there.
Also, what does the stock recovery do versus something like Amon Ra? Does the stock recovery allow for creating backups and what-not? Sorry to be a total noob here. I can bake cookies or something for you all for your help, hehe.

The bootloader is the hboot. You power on holding vol down to get there.
The stock recovery does not allow you to create backups, or do much at all I'm pretty sure. That is why we have custom ones.

Sorry that you never got an answer to this. Yes, you should flash both recovery (stock) and the RUU as PH98IMG zip files. Wait to start this process until you have a pc/sd card reader available. Trying this without those basic tools is going to make this a frustrating process for you.

Need some help!
I decided to give this a try since it sounds like it has some potential to help get users rooted from stock configurations, or after flashing an OTA or RUU, even though I have been S-OFF via JuopunutBear for a while now. I figured I would try the rooting with an insecure boot.img first since that works for S-OFF, but got an error saying I didn't have the right boot.img installed. I had just flashed the latest Sprint ICS RUU.exe from Windows and wanted to see how this tool would work in that scenario.
So since it wanted a boot.img that I didn't have, I tried the universal exploit option but that gave me an error at the Windows level. The phone rebooted into recovery and I had to pull the battery and reboot into the stock ROM, which was fine.
I have attached screenshots of the info I got when I first started the app, the error I got when I tried to root with the exploit (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1) and a text file containing the contents of the message in the scrollable details text box.
I'm also curious what bootloader gets flashed if that option is selected.
Please advise.
Edit: Just noticed that the version went from 1.1.10 that I downloaded yesterday to 1.1.12 today so I will reload the RUU and try that version.

With S-OFF? That's strange, since the OP says that both options work with S-OFF. Also, I couldn't find any mention of htcdev unlock in either the OP or the application when it was running.
I'm not going to htcdev unlock since my bootloader is locked after JuopunutBear and I don't want to have to deal with the ***RELOCKED*** status. I guess I could try flashing a custom bootloader after running the RUU that will allow the fastboot commands, but that can only be done by S-OFF users and by the time that's done it's probably faster to go into fastboot and flash the custom recovery, then the superuser .zip or a rooted ROM from recovery.
I'm not sure where this tool fits exactly, but it sounds like it's mostly useful for people that have done the htcdev unlock but are still S-ON and want to root more easily. If that's the case, they can run this, then boot into Android and flash a custom recovery from an app like 4EXT or Flash Image GUI without having to use fastboot for either superuser or the recovery. Is that the gist of it?
BTW, my results with version 1.1.12 are attached. I got farther this time, but it failed on the temp root.

The errors seem to be causing confusion. If everything else says okay but the Universal Exploit says Failed then this means the exploit has been patched on the stock Rom you are trying to run it on.
Also only rooting via insecure boot.img requires s-off. Universal root will work with s-on if the exploit hasn't been patched.

So in other words, this tool won't work using the "universal exploit" (in quotes because I guess it's not really universal) on the official Sprint ICS build (2.89.651.2) for the Evo 3D, which is what I flashed via RUU.exe right before running it, regardless of the S-ON or S-OFF status? Would it work with an "insecure boot.img" if we are S-OFF and if so how would we set that up?
Assuming someone wanted to root the latest Sprint GB build (2.17.651.5) for the Evo 3D, what advantages does this tool provide over flashing a custom recovery and superuser .zip file from fastboot on a PC?
I'm not trying to be negative, just want to be clear on when someone on our device would benefit from using it.

Ramjet, I have tried it too and end up where you are at. I have done the HTC unlock too.
Can someone show the step by step because I hate to presume I'm doing it right.
I have the phone set and on home screen. I run the program and fails.
I reboot the fone into the boot screen (pwr/vol dn) and select fastboot (pwr press once) then the program works and then fails at the temp thingy..
Hi guys.
It's 2 days already I am trying to do s-off for my evo 3d. Maybe anyone got "up to date" thread where I can do this? My hboot is 1.49.0018, and GSM phone.
Because thread using hex and revolutionary method is out of date, and the main file PG86IMG.zip is no longer uploaded there.
Juopunutbear method requires stock RUU, but when I download from http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/?developer=Shooter this version: RUU_SHOOTER_U_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.28.401.1_Radio_11.77.3504.00U_11.25.3504.06_M_release_262714_signed.zip I get wrong zip file when flashing. Name was too big for 4ext, but when I shorten name it's gives error.
Any ideas? :crying: Thanks..
EDIT: Got S-off, but have no root now..
You can't flash that through 4ext. You need to rename to PG86IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card. Then reboot into the bootloader and when it asks to update, hit volume up to say yes.
Make sure when you boot back up to delete the file from the sd card.
I believe your bootloader needs to be relocked before running the ruu as well.
fastboot oem lock
Personally I have seen many evo V users get s-off just by being on a stock based rom. Because there was no ruu available to them they went as close to stock as possible. Probably best to just follow the instructions though if you have that option.
Thanks Brian. Actually I did just like you said, but apparently that RUU version had 1.53.0007 hboot, so now I am on stock RUU with 1.53.0007 hboot.
Gonna try juopunutbear method first if I manage to install linux first haha.
Good luck! It's not too hard to make the live dvd/usb. There is a program you can download that will set it all up for you if you go to the ubuntu website. They have all the instructions for a live ubuntu dvd/usb.
So I finally made S-off using wire trick But got new problem so gonna ask here..
I am still on stock RUU, and I installed 4ext using Play store, but it's not working cause it says I need root. I installed busybox and SuperSu, but SuperSu won't work, it says: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU can not install it, This is a problem!
I had root before I know for sure.. Also I can't go into recovery from bootloader because recovery does not exist. Can I flash 4ext through the bootloader renaming it PG86IMG.zip or it's not how it works?
Just downloaded several "root checker" apps, and all of them says I have no root access.
Thanks!
Edit: my hboot is 1.53.7777 now if that matters.
Edit2. I am on stock ROM, maybe that's why it does not work..?
EDIT: I've fixed everything, thanks.
Sorry, was asleep but glad to see you got it! I'm assuming you had to flash Super user to get the binaries installed? The app is just an interface.

Ok, I'll try to help best I can. Hopefully one of the more experienced folks can chime in too as they'll probably be way more helpful. I've got a couple guesses, but need to know a bit more. Please know that I'm only providing my best guesses as I haven't run into this problem.
What firmware version were you on when you tried rumrunner? It sounds like you already had an unlocked bootloader and s-off... through moonshine. Did you end up with a locked bootloader? If so, how? You mentioned that you went back to sense 5. What method? Did you ruu back to a stock rom or just flash one of the Custom/stock ROMs.
Here is one possible option. I would suggest reading through the thread thoroughly before diving in...
- Go back to 100% stock with locked bootloader and s-on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293919
Then make sure you've taken any OTA updated to get to 3.06.605.4 and you should be able to use rumrunner.

The reason the thing is failing is because he already has a unlocked bootloader with soff. I don't know why he is trying to unlock something that is already unlocked. All he needs to do is download something like superuser or flash a custom rom with root built into it.

10-4. That's kinda what I thought too, but figured I'd try to confirm by asking a few questions. I have seen a few people get stuck with s-off but a locked bootloader if they goof up the process trying to go back to 100% stock. Thought I'd ask the questions just in case this is what he did.
Ok, I would like to keep the Stock Android, but would like to have root access.
I an unsure how to gain root access with out turning S-ON.
I could follow that and turn S-ON again,
But if you have another method of gaining ROOT with out flashing a custom ROM,
I would be grateful for your assistance.
Sorry for any confusion on that,
I spent 10hrs trying to figure this out yesterday,
it was necessary to put down and look at another day.
I have tried downloading superuser and supersu from the play store, neither give me access to root
However I have looked on your forums since you suggested simply flashing another rom already with root access - Thanks for that btw
this post shows the full version, but has odex and deodex, well deodex is pulled, may i ask what the difference is?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560010
I will flash the odex one now and see what happens, thanks again I needed a fresh look at this I guess.

You must already have a superuser app to install one from the play store. Flash a superuser zip from recovery. That will put both the app and the required binaries in place.
Yo this is a random question if I go back to stock 2.06 soff and rooted will rumrunner update me or what?

From what I have learned so far, running rumrunner when you are already S-OFF will net you a FAILED message. if your DNA is already S-OFF then feel free to flash whatever ROM you want.. well sorta, make sure it's for the DNA, and flash at your own risk.
I took the OTA after achieving S-OFF with moonshine and it removed my root access... now I am in this boat where I want to regain root.
I have finally finished downloading the zip from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560010
But I have no idea how to flash it, step by step instructions would be helpful since this is my first flash and I have yet to figure it out. I have tried fastboot flash zip but that didn't work, and I am unfamilar with this....
The FAQ here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188944
is of no help unfortunately....
I found some Instructions that tell you to boot into recovery, but when I try to boot into recovery all I get is a RED ! and Triangle above a screen. like something went wrong :/
Start by downloading ROM and the patch and copy the file to the SD card’s root in your device.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode. For this, power off your device and restart it keeping the volume down key pressed. Your phone will be booted into bootloader fastboot mode.
In the Recovery mode, use the ‘Power ’key to select and to navigate use the ‘Volume’ keys.
Use ‘backup and restore’ option to create a backup.
Now perform three steps in a row: first wipe data//factory reset, then wipe cache and lastly wipe dalvik cache accessing the advanced menu.
Now install zip from your sdcard, then select ROMs zip file you copied to your phone and choose zip.
Redo it for Patch file once you are done with ROM installation.
At the end, reboot your phone.
Lovely I didn't have a recovery installed, using the tools: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219175
I installed the TWRP 2.5.0.0 recovery,
THEN I was able to enter recovery and flash the ROM.
WOW what a experience, this has been.

well glad you got it sorted out.... it can be quite a lot to take in if you have never done anything like that before. but once you have done it a few times it is much easier to do and remember especially if you run into problems.
cheers
and happy customizing.

Rumrunner doesn't update nothing. Try asking your question again.

if you want the 3.06.605.4 update (aka 4.2.2) and you are already s-off - and want STOCK no root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2570548
if you want root to go with that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560010
if you are stock 2.06 you can take the OTA even if you are s-off, but if you have root, you will loose root taking the ota.

if you want to revert to stock, since i didn't flash the second till i flashed the first, i would suggest that you do that, if you want to go with another custom rom, follow it's instructions, if it asks for a specific starting point, aka stock 4.2.2 then flash the first one then flash the custom one.
