[Q] 4.4 x86 on EEEPC - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Installed 4.4 on my old Asus eeepc 1005HA, glad to see nearly everything running smoothly.
I have two questions though. The first is that the keyboard seems to be half working. In that the Fn keys (change audio, brightness ect) are working but none of the letters and other keys are, when I go to type something or navigate it doesnt work. I have a usb keyboard pluggin for the time being which does work.
Second, the shortcut apps on the homescreen have the text half chopped off, not sure what resolution the kitkat is running at but it looks ok apart from the icon text.
And I assume that sleep still isnt working?
Thanks

Also if anyone knows of a more 'laptop' friendly theme they would recommend that'd be helpful too.

Did you install the latest rc?
And aren't there EEEPC patches?

I installed RC1, from what I could see on the x86 website there were only patches or a specific build for ICS, not kitkat

Ok, I see now that only android 4.0 has the eeepc modules/modifications built in.
You must use the proper android 4.0 eeepc iso.
Unless you want to spend time to build 4.4 yourself.

But nearly everything, apart from parts of the keyboard, is already working? Why would I go back to ICS?

1) You can properly use your keyboard.
2) Youll have proper gpu acceleration and any other hardware on your device will work(Specific modules would be there)
3)I don't consider 4.4 stable yet, but you could still build 4.4 with the eeepc modules/etc. if you wanted.

Davidosky99 said:
Hi, that has a simple explanaition.
It's still on RC1.
Let pass a few time, to stable and until then, use 4.3.
Drivers for KK EEEPC, are still not totally ready which explains keyboard and display.

Ah, right, makes sense then.
Are there drivers for the eeepc on 4.3? Like I said on the x86 website there's only ones for 4.0, I would much rather run jellybean then ICS.

Live booting the eeepc build of 4.0.2 rc2 has got the keyboard working, so is there a build or drivers I can install for 4.3?

gona have a go at this later but i would prefer to do it with 10.04
It works on the streak
Just trying to get keyboard input working now
Bahh i cant post pictures.
i got it to work but then was pissing arround with 10.04 and broke it now i cant get it working again lol
would love to do this it would be the perfect phone/desktop like when you get home you drop it in the dock and it out to a monitor with ubuntu then when you dissconnect it it would switch to android cant wait to get my hands on this and do a little output to monitor
Going to have a go now will post how it goes
check out the ubuntu karmic rootfilesystem I put together for the htc hd2. can be found on my thread (see signature)
anyone had a go at this?
i have downloaded his filesystem but i dont know how id get it to boot?
Follow the YouTude video, I did it earlier and it worked a charm.
Have fun.
i mean the hd2 image ... i did the nexus one way easily....
i started the thread lol and did it...
only takes 5 mins but the hd2 one has much more funtionality...
Oh! Doh! LOL
No, sorry about that chap.
Sorry to have to ask this but........
What will this give me over the standard browser or something like logmein?
fully functional linux
desktop browser
desktop programs
and unlike log me in you dont need a computer on somewhere else and it doesnt rely on an internet connection
I'm working on a new version of Ubuntu for hd2. If there is any interest in trying it on the streak and people are ready to do some tests for me I will be able to meet the necessary modifications for networking etc to work.
This blog shows a short video I shot:

I don't do chroots. What you see in the video is the real deal. Complete stock ubuntu 10.10.
We might run into trouble though with the lack of kernel source code fro the streak.
Can somebody run
zcat /proc/config.gz > streak-config.txt

and pastebin the (possibly) resulting streak-config.txt file ?
It should hold the kernel configuration for the streak. It is important to have some options available.
Possible problems are: You don't have zcat. Then you can do
adb pull /proc/config.gz
Click to collapse
and just upload that file
If dell kernel hackers didn't enable some kernel option the file might not be present.
edit: without the full kernel sources I will never be able to make it work as flawlessly as it does on the hd2. if you want to take action visit this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8011812
write a mail to dell. tell them you want a fully copy of the ship and update kernel source code. if they ignore you report it to
https://lists.gpl-violations.org/mailman/listinfo/legal
didn't have zcat, it was included with the market install of busybox though... anyways, here you go!
*running the 8105 2.1 build*
Nice, thanks! It has everything that is needed to boot the way I boot it on the hd2.
If I upload a kernel, initrd and cmdline, can somebody create blob.fastboot from it ?

That's great.
I am interested in running Maemo/MeeGo on Streak, but for first experiments I have chosen Ubuntu, which I am familiar with.
I wasn't able to build android-msm-2.6.32 kernel for Streak and I even started an action to convince Dell to release the sources: http://android.modaco.com/content/d...ell-to-release-kernel-source-call-for-action/
Later I managed to find a way of creating boot.img for Streak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7959574&postcount=6
and I was able to chroot a rootstrap of Ubuntu on my MMC.
Now I am working on porting Ubuntu standard initrd to Streak boot.img
Using default android kernel as Dell haven't released the source yet.
We may join forces, as I am very new to Android hardware (but not to Linux itself).

Linux 4 Tegra released!

It has been released on June the 26th!
It can be found at this url.
That information seems to be quite good.
From what I understand, binaries from NVidia contain 2.6.38 kernel with Tegra 2 drivers.
Does anyone here knows if this has any chance of working on Folio 100 ?
Could this kernel be usefull for HC releases ?
Thanks !
It cannot be used as is. Btw I'll give it a try just to experiment.
I downloaded also all the source code from nvidia and'ill try to compile it adding some drivers to handle the touchscreen.
Hey thanks roglio, that's a good source of information. I will give it a try as well, but probably not in these few weeks
Im very interested in using this. I dont have any experiance with making my own rom tho, so i have to go and try to find some recources on that first. If you guy's has a link for me ill be very gratefull

Nvm, after some proper reading on my part, it seems that there is a document there that will help you get it up and running...
After a quick read of the supplied doc's, it seems to me that this is more or less the same way to get linux working as was posted previously. They make an ubuntu disk image and flash a kernel and boot files to load the image from a sdcard. The only diffrence here is that you have "official" drivers for the board.
Yes, you're right and consider that is nvidia in person to release this material.
Maybe we will get ubuntu before honeycomb in the meantime that google release ice cream (with source code).

To get arch running you need to get a file system image similar to the Ubuntu one that nVidia is suggesting. You also need a Arch arm kernel. If I don't forget ill try to look into it
[edit]
Ok, after a quick search I found an Arch arm site and on the forum they have a guide on installing on an ac100, that as far as i know is the folio 100 with a keyboard. (Right?)

Removing Touchwiz from 8.9

So, how do I go about doing this? I tried straight out replacing SystemUI.apk on Overcome 2.0 with the one from a Xoom (with Android 3.2) and it didn't work out as well as I thought. Additionally, as motley pointed out, Touchwiz integration reaches into the kernel (yikes!).

PLUS YOU WILL NEED TO FLASH GAPPS AFTER
Jelly Bean 4.2 Gapps here (CM10.1)
(use top row CM10.1 link for 11/30)
WHAT WORKS
(Basically, most items I tested work)
Hardware Acceleration (Thanks to Hascode for all things related to HD codecs customization)
HD Codecs (YouTube)
NOT WORKING
Bootanimation needs a display bugfix (Landscape mode default)
Recents list also needs a display bugfix
Sound does not always work (seemingly random), especially with Apps like Google Play music.
USB Transfer speed seems very low (800kb/s)
INSTALLATION
FULL WIPE is required when coming from a 4.1 ROM. Use Titanium Backup to restore apps.
Download the ZIP
Grab the GAPPS (11/30 from goo.im/gapps)
Reboot into CWM
Make your backup
Wipe -> Factory Reset (data/cache)
Flash both .zip files
Reboot and Enjoy
Special Credit to Hascode for help during preparing this release.

No, i though it was implemented in the ROM. Anyways can you provide me a link for the most updated way to install the firmware, mikos wrote about an app but can't find it so i guess that means it's not ready yet. Thanks!
@kuzma maybe you can add to the install instruction that you need to have the 10 touch firmware installed and a link of it, that will make it easier for the ones that stop following the forum.

i find the auto-rotate needs a fix in general, it's not only the bootanimation that is off standard. 7 inch tablets were changed to be portrait by default. i also find that sound doesn't work 100% either, but that's a minor problem.
This is a really good release and i can't wait to see what you do to it :3
Add support both 2 point and 10 point touchscreen firmware. Filename for release same full_acclaim-jb-20121213.zip. If anybody with 2 point firmware download this file this morning (Ukraine timezone) please download it again.
Couple things I'm seeing...
Clock Force Closes every boot
Microphone is not working with Google Now (this has had issues on other 4.1 roms, so not surprised that it doesnt work here, although there is a patch, somewhere for it)
Daydream setting for Clock causes a settings force close (others work fine, could be related to the Clock Force Close on bootup).
Google Now says Location services are turned off, they are turned on in settings, so something isn't right there.
I will post back if i can find that patch and try it out to see if it will fix the mic issue.
EDIT: I tried the patch (used to be a flashable .zip file, now is an APK) and was not able to use the mic afterwards still

appears that true tablet mode is completely gone (even setting Density to 133, i could not get it), this is fine, as with a lower density, i REALLY like the UI the way it is.
I will post back if i can find that patch and try it out to see if it will fix the mic issue.

If I recall, Google removed Tablet Mode entirely from 4.2.x
Well, not removed just locked it out (confirmed by PA team). You're not likely to find it until someone hacks something together to get it back.

yeah, i figured as much, thats cool, i got used to a lower than stock lcd_density, so i'll just set it at 140 and see if it causes any problems... i will have to say that i like the phablet ui at that scale though, it still pretty clean, and nice.

Ubuntu Phone is HERE!

Yes, today canonical launched a phone and tablet version of Ubuntu Phones
you can see procedure to flash Galaxy Nexus (very similar to RAZR)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2078691
I hope dev can do similar work for razr with BMM (kexec?)
It is certain that we need unlocked bootloader for this.
Don't get nervous people... it's just a preview version with most everything non-working. For what I know only Gallery, Camera, Browser and few more is working.
They've released those ROMS only for the Nexus family, NS, NGS, N4, N7 and N10 and the source code is not public yet.
Even being nexus 7 compatible, I couldn't get it to install in my GSM nexus 7, it's not compatible.. only wifi version.
Cheers!

Aha this is a joke right? We have a better chance of Motorola unlocking our bootloaders than we do for Canonical supporting the RAZR as a development device.
you clearly havnt looked at canonical's website.. it runs using cm10 as backbone. will work on our devices using safestrap.
Ubuntu phone currently works using KEXEC... if there's anyone running safestrap 3, it runs in rom slot 4 with a 2 gb data partition, courtesy of dhacker
There's already a prewiew version in goo.im. Having downloaded it, but for so many issues, still waiting for some report about the result.
I have installed the Ubuntu Preview in my Razr MAXX
As I said in my first post it's a very very early preview, and almost nothing works, I don't even have 3G connection so you can only use wifi for the moment (not sure as I haven't tested wifi, but it sees the access points around me, so I guess it works)
The preview's use is only to see how's it gonna be, have a while looking at how does things, and why not, show it to your friends!
At boot is a little laggy, but after that it gets more responsive, without being as responsive as Android 4.2 in my nexus 7 .. of course the hardware of the nexus is much better and this is only an alpha version that they're gonna polish for sure.
One more thing, if you try to install it, it's easy:
You need to download the preinstalled ROM from canonical (408mb) and then the Razr ROM (about 60mb).
Using Safestrap 3.XX create a Slot-4 partition (YES, MUST BE SLOT 4) with 2GB (YES, THIS TOO). Then just flash first the canonical preinstall rom and right after it the razr rom...
In my first boot, the screen went black for about 30 secs and then the device rebooted, but I went to recovery, wiped dalvik and cache (guess it's no use if it's not android, but who knows) .. and the second boot worked. Be ready to have a heart attack because it has no "loading" screen and it's about 1 minute for the first boot into the Ubuntu touch lock screen directly.
You tell me your impressions!!
Cheers!

Obviously, a preview is a preview but i enjoyed swiping my way around the brand new experience and getting a feel for things (confusing at first, despite watching the official vids a while back ).
running adb
I installed it on my Razr and the OS is running great.
The camera, Video and 3G data is not working.
I'm looking for a way to access adb from it so i could ssh and installed alpha stage app from launchpad.
could someone point me to a tuto on how to access adb ? I already googled but could not find nothing.
Camera working? If its yes, then do let us know about the vid and pic quality comparison with respect to stock 4.0.4
