I am planning to multiboot Ubuntu and Win 8.1.
I just want to confirm that whether USB tethering works on Ubuntu or not.
Is somebody tried USB tethering on Ubuntu.

Sadly no. Wine might be able to open odin.exe but it can't detect the phone due to the lack of drivers. So far no such method of flashing firmware from Ubuntu. Hope I helped
it works well on Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 I use Ubuntu 13.10 and Win 8.1

I see you asked this on the Dell forum too... with no responses, just like here.
Something is obviously wrong with the Dell Streak 5 as the other 6 phones is a (see my sig) I had no issue using them as a modem for my laptops via PdaNet. I need to know if I can use it as a modem for the Streak, are there any limitations with 1.6... and where to get the dang driver since the one from PdaNet won't work.
It seems to be impossible on the at&t model.
I have so far tried pdanet (usb driver error), barnacle legacy (can upload but not download), android-wifi-tether (apparently incompatible with 1.6), android wired tether (1.6), and one more that I dont recall the name of, which simply crashed.
What version of windows are you using?
I got mine working on ubuntu 10.10 without a hitch.

Win7 Ultimate
What is ubuntu 10.10?
A linux distrobution, it's an entire operating system, but you can get an installer that runs off a USB stick, probably too much of a circus if you're going to do it regularily.
william58 you aren't still running 1.6 are you?
Hoping to get some update from @AmyatDell as she is looking into it for me since no one at dell responded on their forums.

Finally got the driver loaded and PdaNet working.
A bit tricky, but if you follow the instructions I posted, it will work.
That post is here:
Getting PdaNet to work with Streak 5
PDANET
I would suggest you remove any drivers you have installed from Windows 7.
I was having the same problem and then heard about PDANET.
I couldn't even use fastboot because everytime I connected my Streak, Windows would try to install different drivers.
I read in another forum, pocketables I think, that installing PDANET would solve this.
So I uninstalled all traces of drivers and the Dell Sync also, installed PDANET and voila, no more problems.
So if PDANET isn't working for ya, you have a driver issue or there's something wrong with your Streak

If you would have read my previous post, you would have saw I got it working.
As for uninstalling the drivers and dell sync and using PdaNet drivers... that didn't work for me. Drivers would NOT install. So see my solution in this link:
Getting PdaNet to work on your Streak
Maybe the way you did it worked, but the variables may have been different as I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit which could effect the kind of drivers etc.
I have tried everything to get these drivers to work, tried installing them on windows vista, windows 7, using compatibility mode, using a virtual machine to install it on windows xp, downloaded three different types of versions of windows xp and I still can not get these drivers to install on anything.
I've searched the forums; I've lurked all throughout google and youtube. I can not find the solution. Will somebody out there please for the love of god help me. This is the 4th day I've tried to continue the process of flashing my phone to boost and I haven't even gotten past this very first step.
did you manually go through device manager and try to update the drivers?

How would that even work out ? The phone won't even register on the device manager without the drivers or having a microsd card which is just for accessing my micro sd data.

Try another download of the driver....It will ONLY work with Windows XP, I ran virtual pc on my Win 7 computer, load driver in virtual pc session and be sure you can access your usb port in virtual Pc. When I get home, If you need it I'll upload the driver I used.

That is for native android tethering. PCC should work on Windows XP for Sony Ericsson dial up modem.

I can't find any function in PC Companion for that, according to me there is no option for Android phones in newest PCC anyway, as Android already includes that.

I used the PCC included with my X8 and use it with a remote PC wearing windows xp. I had to keep USB debugging on. Well, that's an old story now I have Windows 7 & 8.
To OP, try PDAnet or similar to work
Thanks all for your replies ... i believe the usb tethering is possible with win XP, as when i turn it on, windows xp detects a new hardware. however since the driver is not available the modem cannot be installed.
with win7 its just a breeze...!
That's the thing, there are no proper drivers for Windows XP.

Did you run tSilenzio's autoLGNPST? If so, did you run install.bat as administrator? <--That seem to be the most common issue.
Check Device Manager for any devices with a warning sign or Unknown devices.
Yeah you can't use USB 3.0 with this phone. Will not work. Had to use another computer with USB 2.0 only ports to us lgnpst

Windows 8 Pro (Not 8.1). Are you sure that you ran install.bat as administrator?
EDIT: Never mind, that was the USB2 port. The USB3 port doesn't work...
I recently bought a new laptop, and would like to be adding roms and what not through this laptop, I currently run a Windows 8.1 64bit ( I think) and would like to install ADB and Fastboot. Would the method - here - work for me or do I have to use another way?
