Hi Guys, I am in the process to put my M8 back to stock, currently I am s-off, how do I convert it back to s-on? Do I remove the custom recovery first then unroot, then S-on?
What is the proper sequence to do it, thanks

Just leave it soff. It throws a security flag when you turn security back on. There is no way around this at the moment but i'm pretty sure the command is
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
Double check this before using it, this is off the top of my head.
Its in the all in one toolkit.

I agree. Unless you are selling the device, I don't see the reason to s-on.
AT&T doesn't care if the phone is modded, if returning for warranty service.

Is this root method like unrevoked forever? Is this at the radio level or just a hacked hboot?
If later on, an OTA gets applied, will the phone still be s-off so I can just flash a recovery again?
Please don't respond 'dont take OTAs', because that's not what I'm asking.

From what I have read it is at the radio level and OTA's shouldn't affect s-off.

http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
From that page:
What does this do, then?
revolutionary will give you S-OFF either by a patched HBOOT or setting the secureflag to off on the device itself. This behaviour will depending on your particular device. Optionally it will also replace the stock Android recovery with a custom one, which adds many features including “nandroid” backups, the ability to use custom ROMs, and a greater amount of flexibility and customization of your Android phone.
Does this permanently unlock the NAND flash on my phone?
Yes. The default configuration of this tool disables the phone's security, which also disables the NAND locks placed on the storage by the bootloader.
All the info I know about is right there.
I also found this, which I'm not positive if this applies to our method, but I think it does. Interesting none the less: http://alpharev.nl/
From what I understand, S-off will remain no matter what, until you issue a fastboot command that is "fastboot oem setsecureflag3" You can see here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194053 for a full tut on how to turn it back to S-on. SO yea, it's similar to unrevoked forever, where you're always S-off until you deliberately set it to S-on. Running an RUU doesn't even set it to S-on.
That all said, even though you said "don't tell me not to take OTA", I will remind you anyways, that it's always a sketchy thing, especially if HTC has included a new hboot in that OTA. To each their own though.
Thanks for the info, I missed that on the unrevoked site.
However, if it's S-Off in the radio, doesn't that mean that the hboot won't really matter? On the evo 4g at least, new hboots don't kill the s-off and you could always reflash a recovery from hboot.
I'm just wondering if you can flash a recovery with s-off from a stock hboot.

Are you sure? I read this in the AlphaRev FAQ's
As soon as you decide to flash a stock RUU that has a HBOOT update in it, this hacked HBOOT will be overwritten.

This is interesting, as I have been wondering how to get S-ON after running Revolutionary, should I need to take my device in for repairs.
What's your take on it?

Download the ruu. Put it on the root of your sd card. Reboot into bootloader. Done.
If you were wanting to make it ready for warranty exchange, you may want to change the glaring S-Off flag back to S-On too.
Some say they get by with S-Off, some would rather not risk the rare possibility of a VZW rep or HTC actually saying your warranty is void due to tampering.

Basically, minus step two. Note that the S-off procedure toggles your bootloader to Locked too.
You should also flash a JuopunutBear hboot after S-off instead of running HTCDev Unlock again to gain your Fastboot commands functionality. Plus PH98IMG files will work on a Locked stock bootloader anyway.
*If* you unlock, then you will be flagged as "Unlocked" in the bootloader, and flagged "Relocked" after locking it back up. Both indicate tampering; warranty becomes a concern.
Only way to show the stock "Locked" flag again is to cycle back through all those steps to process the bootloader flag back inside S-off's magic.
Just sayin', no good reason to Unlock after S-off. But nobody has ever been charged for Unlocked bootloaders by Verizon or HTC either.

you DO NOT have to ruu twice. You will want an official .exe RUU

So s-off > run ruu > then s-on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25165453
throw me a thanks if i helped
Excellent, thank you very much. Not new to flashing ROM's or anything, but with the (former) lack of S-off/the issues of going back with the updated firmware/hboot just had me concerned. Will give it a try later tonight or tomorrow and post back how it goes. Thanks again.

you have to run the same RUU twice in hboot so it can do its complete install.
He wants to get to stock so he won't be using a leaked RUU and so he will not have to run it twice.
What I'm thinkin is, if you made a backup of the stock rom before you flashed your first Rezound rom, you can just do a Restore.
Sent from my S-off HTC Rezound
That would only work if your s-off. The boot.IMG wouldn't be backed up if you weren't s_off when you made the backup.
I going to get a replacement from Verizon and I need to revert my phone back to stock. Right now I'm s on and my boot says tampered and unlocked how can I get back to stock. Will an ruu work?
If you look for the hboots thread in the dev section, there is a modified one that will say 'locked'. You just need to download it and flash. I believe you may actually have to re s-off temporarily to flash it though. Could be wrong

You can, but it wouldn't do any good as the ruu would not clear the tampered, unlocked message. This is why you need the modified hboot I mentioned. It has the message modified that has the correct message of 'locked'.
Grab the one called 'locked'

Why would he use that? It won't do what he needs to do. Seriously now, we appreciate your effort to help, but please don't add confusion to a simple task especially after I've taken the time to tell eris exactly what he needed to do..
And you do need to s-off then flash the hex edited hboot.. all you need is for that phone to stay locked and be on a stock Rom and your good. Verizon doesn't usually check as long as you went thru the trouble shooting process with them over the phone and theyll send you a new one in the mail and you'll ship the old one back. They can't technically send you a phone and then charge you for the old one (if it is ***tampered***) cuz they wouldn't have done the proper trouble shooting before sending you a new phone. For all they know you got your phone that way.

Dudes,
Too many dead pixels dying on my phone and ATT is sending me another replacement device through warranty. I RUU'd and brought everything back to normal from the CID, hboot, radio, and back to s-on but I cannot get my bootloader to show "Locked". It just shows relocked. Im certain I cannot send it back to them saying relocked. Ive searched and maybe im not searching good enough. Care to share some commands?
"fastboot oem lock" only relocks it.
I restored the phone to 3.17 firmware and RUU but before I update it to the 4.3 id like it to show locked. Any help is appreciated.
Edit: Nevermind I found my answer. Read that this was not possible.

For anyone that's searching for this exact issue ill share what i did to get my phone completely back to stock. I did search the forum but the info was all over the place and in my opinion it was as clear as "I" needed it to be hence me creating a thread for something so simple. Ok as follows here is what I did step by step.
First I had to make sure I installed HTC sync of course. At the moment my firmware was 3.57 and I downloaded the 3.17 RUU.exe from HTC.com
Your firmware *HBOOT* and the RUU you download have to match or you will get errors. Well, least I did.
Make sure you download some type of toolkit it would make life a lot easier. I used this one it worked like a charm!
At the moment, my phone is bootloader unlocked and s-off fyi.
Next, Use the tool to "lock" your bootloader first not "re-lock" just "lock". If you're having issues push revone again and follow commands on toolbox.
Now, check hboot to see if it shows "locked" if it has tampered above locked that's ok the RUU will take care of that.
Run, the RUU, make sure usb debugging on and htc sync already installed. Let it run.
After its done, start up phone again, turn off fastboot under "power" and turn usb debugging on again.
Start up toolkit, look to the right and it will say "s-on" device. You can only s-on after you've ran the RUU and are on stock hboot and rom.
Check Hboot again and it should read "Locked" and now "s-on".
Phone now ready to send back for warranty or etc.
Hope this helps anyone that searches. I found a few thread via google and they helped out a bunch.

Using the VipeRUU was supper easy and quick. Back to stock off to sell.:good:
Not a problem. Just remember that the RUU is run from your computer. Connect your phone and PC via USB cable, and once the connection is complete double-click the RUU file to start the installer. You may need to install HTC Sync so that you have the proper drivers installed on your computer. It takes about 10-15 minutes for the RUU to run, so be patient. VipeRUU is a little bit different. When you double-click the file to start the process, it will bring up a menu with options in it for you to choose from. It's pretty straightforward, though.
I've run VipeRUU a few times, but the bootloader stays unlocked. Anyone have any suggestions to get it back to a "Locked" state? I'm S-OFF, HBOOT 2.09.

I don't believe that will work being S-off (I've tried it before just for kicks and it didn't do anything). Even if it did, the bootloader would show the tampered and unlocked warning.
