Like I'm sure many of you have, I just followed Surge's (awesome) thread on updating to 4.4.2 and keeping root.
I was just wondering what some good ROMS to check out that are compatible with 4.4.2 and which can be flashed via safestrap.
I really want to try something close to a Google Play Edition ROM but I'm having trouble finding one that is compatible with this set-up. Anyone know of something close?

There is nothing remotely close available for a non-MDK verizon S4.
Eclipse is themed to look like AOSP, not sure if it will work with 4.4.2 safestrap though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351840

my current set-up is surges deoxed nc5 rooted firmware. I have installed hyper-drive 16.1 and liked it but I would like to play around with more rom choices. is there a way to port at&t custom roms to work on my verizon galaxy s4? I can't find a good write-up on it, or tutorial and though googlie has done a great deal for the development community I just don't understand his xstrasmall patch or really understand auto port patches altogether. I would prefer installation methods to be by safestrap, as it is all I'm familiar with. Thank you, for your reply.

Some Att roms may work, you may just have to test them. Also you will have to change the APN (google Verizon APN) to be able to get service.
So I just got handed an S4 from a co-worker, I just spent an hour looking up info on root and stuff to load custom roms (looking mainly for CM11). My main problem seems to be all the shortened terms and everything associated with this phone, root vs unlocked bootloader vs etc, MK2?? NC5??. I can't seem to find any "newb" friendly breakdown of all of this. This isn't my first hacked device by far (I got an old DiNC and a ReZound for my last 2), but definitely the most confusing one. So here's the info I got on my phone: Galaxy S4, Verizon, SCH-I545, Android 4.4.2, VRUFNC5, hardware version: I545.06.
Can anyone point me in the right directions to understand better, and get me to my final destination of Custom rom? Or at least get me to understand this better?
I did search the first 5 pages of every section to see if there was a "newb-friendly" sticky but didn't seem to go anywhere fast, just made me more confused.

The problem with a simple "newb friendly" page is that every update to the phone changes what you need to do to root and what you can run.
For your NC5 phone, you need to use Towelroot to root it. That gets you root, but you're stuck with the stock bootloader. That means that you can't directly run a custom ROM. You can use Safestrap to allocate space for an alternative ROM, which is almost the same as a fully unlocked phone. The big thing you lose is that you can't run arbitrary ROMs, just what's compatible with the stock kernel. No CM, no AOSP.
So, read up on Towelroot and Safestrap. Once you have those down, you should be n the way.
Yeah, I got towel root already installed, supersu running and added to system and Knox disabled. Where should I be looking at roms that I can run under safestrap? Or should I say which section of the forums? Thank you for your response btw.

Usually, roms that are compatible with safestrap are labeled as such. Since nc5 doesn't allow custom kernels, you will stuck with touchwiz kernels, so usually the roms will look like the stock samsung experience or a themed version. If you want an aosp themed safestrap rom, get eclipse rom. If you want a 99% gpe s4 rom download the gpe edition safestrap rom( it has some bugs though).
Usually roms are located at the "Android development" section of the forum. The gpe rom thread is in the general section.

The thing to keep in mind, is that safestrap loads too late to be able to replace the kernel. This is the limiting factor, your stuck on the stock kernel... Different versions of android and different versions of kernels may have slightly different functions/parameters coded into the kernel, so calling a newer function or calling a function with parameters that no longer match the new style will fail.... so if the rom wasn't directly designed for the stock kernel of the same version your using it likely won't work.
In practice that means you need a rom based on TW, that is the same version (NC5) as you are currently using. Not sure but there are likely a few changes the Rom make needs to add for safe strap compatibility... Basically when you look at the Rom's thread it will list a baseband (NC5) and say its safestrap compatible.
Thanks to all of you, that clears up a lot of confusion I had. Now where do I find out (or how do I decifer) if I'm MJ7/MK2/ME7/MI1? Or am I correct in assuming I'm NOT (all the builds I see for safestrap mention those only no NC5.
Can anyone recommend a solid rom for this Note II that is solid stable with good performance?
I realize there are many. I am an experienced romer but have just acquired this for a family member and need to fully root, rom and restore.
Any guidance appreciated. I think it is stock 4.4.2 as acquired right now.
I haven't found a KK 4.4.x ROM yet that doesn't have issues. There are several 4.3 ROM's however that are rock solid...I recommend either the Jett or Jelly-Wiz ROM's but many of the others have great reviews.

Thank you. For these persons, I don't want issues. Thank you for the recommendations. Have you tried CM at all? I also thought about keeping Samsung's 4.4.2 and just rooting it and using Wanam.
No, I haven't tried CM since my Galaxy Nexus days. I never went beyond the stock 4.3 ROM as I'm rooted and unlocked...looking at the rooted stock 4.4.2 there seems to be issues with it too, at least that's what I'm reading in those threads. I tried about four different KK ROM's and they all had issues with the camera, reboots, and other nagging issues. After trying the 4.4.x ROM's I went back to the 4.3 Jett ROM because it really had all or most of the features I wanted and it's rock solid with good battery life. I have no experience with Wanam. Good luck.

Yikes, I better read. Perhaps I should have read before just purchasing these two used. I sure hope I can still root and unlock them. I appreciate the tips.
I'm pretty sure if they're on the stock OTA 4.4.2 then your bootloader is now locked...not sure if anyone ever found a work around. I think you can still quasi-root it, through some other method (Ghetto Root?). Read the developer forums below...lots of info there.

If they are using the OTA verison they can root with ghettoroot and then use safestrap to flash new ROMs. The only catch is that the ROMs have to be based on the stock kernel, so no AOSP or anything fancy. I am not sure if the ROM has to match the system kernel's version, so you may want to check, unless somebody knows???
You can find the instructions here: Safestrap on locked bootloader 4.4.2 ND7
This is, of course assuming that you have the locked bootloader in the first place.
As for a solid ROM for safestrap recovery I have been trying out quite a few, and I like Alliance, as well as Sophisticated ROM Remix. Not too shabby, although I did have some lag issues with Alliance.
I am on stock 4.4.2 so that means a locked bootloader. Uggg.
Okay...off to ghettoroot. What was the last OS that was bootloader unlockab.e?
Any other ND7 roms I should look at?
Can someone point me with links to the roms that work with safe strap 3.72 and a locked ND7 boat loader?
I am confused. Can a person run Trent's 4.4.2 rom on an ND7 device?
Thank you in advanced.
Hey everyone. Been hanging around for awhile now but now i actually need help. I'm running Verizon GS4 NC5 with root and SS 3.75. Now that the other ROM slots work id like to be able to load one but other than some minor mods I've never really flashed anything. the main thing i have trouble with is that on here i'm unable to find and threads and/or roms that are NC5 and SS compatible. Im wondering if its because there are none yet (or under development), or im just not looking in the right places.
Any help would be very appreciated, thanks.
p.s: i would really really like a gpe rom, so if you come across anything relating to that that would be awesome.

There are few gpe roms that work and they're quite buggy. But the roms that you seek are in the development thread. There's plenty to choose from and 99% are TW based. Happy hunting!
I would try Hyperdrive ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57139361&postcount=30257
It's what I used before going to NK1. Now I use the Empty Galaxy Rom for my Samsung Galaxy S5 I545:

Rodger
I would reccomend BajaRom and Hyperdrive, both very good roms
Hello,
Firs off I'm new here so a lot of this stuff is still foreign to me. I was able to get a brand new Verizon S4 with NC5. I have not even opened the box yet.
I want to upgrade to the best OTA which also has a stable, reliable, debloated custom ROM available similar to say CleanRom. Which OTA should I upgrade to? If it's not the newest VZW has put out, will I get notifications every day asking me to upgrade?
Which custom ROMs are similar to CleanRom? I was stability, reliability, speed and tethering.
Thanks!
Empty Galaxy is a killer kitkat rom
Stang5litre edition is a great lollipop rom. He and klabit87 are working on some fun stuff right now too.
There are a few ways to update. Safestrap or flash fire.
Flash fire flashes once in the rom. You have to be careful with it. It can flash the kernel and bugger things up.
Safestrap is a recovery before the rom boots but is only compatible with kitkat. You have to flash a kitkat kernel to use when flashing when using lollipop roms. Then flash the lollipop kernel and boot the rom.
Muniz_ri makes some stock rooted roms with older bootloaders so you can always go back.
Always uninstall SDM with titanium backup when using a stock prerooted rom so it doesn't try to update the phone and ruin the fun.
Brian
Thanks for the reply Brian! Since posting, I taught myself a few things but your tips certainly will help!
I installed Eclipse ROM and so far so good. The one exception is I lost my Verizon voicemail. How can I add that? I have my old S4 laying around, also on NC5. Can it be copied from there?
I'm not sure. if the old one is rooted, you may be able to copy the apk to the directory of the new phone and change the permissions and reboot and have it work but I'm not sure.
