Replace phone and calendar app - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted the phone and using
RomAur v2.0 XZ2 AROMA ROM. So the phone and calendar are same as the stock rom. I don't like the phone app as it doesn't have frequently contacts and it is not full text search. You have to match from the beginning of the contact name.
I have titanium backup the contact and calendar from old phone (samsung galaxy s2) and was trying to restore it on Z2. But TB shows warning that it's trying to restore system app from a different rom, which might not work. How should I do?
If I want to try restore those, how should I backup the current phone, calendar without overwrite the backup file (phone, calendar) from galaxy s2.
Or is there any recommended phone/calendar app on play store?
PS: I like the samsung contact search feature as it's not only full text search but also index the chinese character in english spelling. So I can type english to search chinese names!

I don't think it's possible. Samsung apps only work on TouchWiz.

You could try the official Google dialer. Let us know if you do and it works well!

I tried that and it force closes when trying to view the call log.
Any ideas?
I really hate the sony dialer and how it butchers google voice integration.

I ended up using Contact+/Message+/Dialer+. It's really well designed. Try it!

I've used a couple of versions of Google dialer and the CM11 dialer on stock based ROMs on my Z2.

[Q] [Request] Motorola Stock Messaging App

Hi everyone, i used to be on the stock 2.2.2 ROM, and i've now (finally ^^) installed CM7. The only problem is, i really miss two things:
- The Stock messaging app (or motorola's one), white background, yellow and greyish threads...if you see wich one i mean
- The multitouch keyboard (again white, and slightly bigger keys than the one in CM7).
Now i've got a nandroid backup of my /system (i have unyaffed it), i've tried to install my odex, framework, etc files for messaging.odex/etc, failed, i've deodexed the messaging.odex, failed ("app did not install")... how do we do it? Can someone help me on this?
And the Keyboard i was talking of, i couldn't find it in my nandroid, does someone know where to search, and what to do with it?
i know handcent or other apps exist, but i'll be fussy on these two apps, especially the messaging app which i really miss ;( ^^
Thanks in advance to any kind hearted person who is willing to help me =)

I also miss the stock messaging app. With the stock app, you could send SMS with characters like [á, í, ó, ú] without problems. With CM7, if you enter one of these characters, you are stuck with less than 70 characters per message (I know it is because the char encoding changes to Unicode, but Motorola solved this somehow).
Do u have a titanium backup of it?....it may be possible to restore it using titanium backup ....I used it to restore the stock Connected music player

[Q] Replaced mms.apk, every new incoming message gets put in new thread. Any fix?

Hello xda people.
So I tried installing both the 4.1.2 apk from AOKP rom and the 4.1.1 from some defualt rom. I got the messaging part working with both .apk's. My problem however is that when I replace them every new incoming message gets put into a new thread in the message app.
How would I go about to fix this?
More editing: I wasn't 100% clear, but what I want was the android messaging app, not the samsung one. I also figured it could be that I have to replace the contact.apk as well? Like always, any input would be nice.
I did remove the stock app with titanium backup for those who might be interested in doing the same.
Also: I'm doing this because I want the emoji support in the default app without having to use a custom sms app.
I'm running Omega v31.1 so using the stock 4.1.1 samsung sms app I would presume

Up. Same thing here. I'm running the stock Samsung ROM, and I've tried replacing SecMms.apk with almost all mms.apk's I've found on xda-dev. Always the same issue, although it does happen only for some contacts, not all. For some contacts, it's indeed reusing an old thread, as it's supposed to.
UP
I have the same issue...stock rooted galaxy s3 android 4.1.1
I have tried alla MMS.apk 4.X+ version but everytime the same error
btw gs3 4.1.1 ita
The alleged fix is to add international codes to all your numbers. I tried this using number fixer. It worked for about 5 hours then messages started creating new threads again. Very annoying, ended up going back to GoSMS
I tried this too....everyone have a fix for everything here, so thought that someone fixed this
Same problem here, any suggestions?
same here.what a pity some modded APK are realy nice
possible fix
hi,
try this..
everytime you create a message, use the contact app first to select the recipient from there you click the icon for messaging beside the mobile number. then, when the recipient reply it will thread to you original message.

[Q] Unistalling Naver Line to change ROM

Hi, I have the stock ROM in my phone I am considering installing Cyanogenmod. My question is how should I uninstall and then install Naver Line in the new ROM. I don't know if it is enough to uninstall the app without deleting my account and then register in Line with my email in the new ROM. The program help says that if you do it wrong you may appear with two accounts to your friends. I have heard that installing a backup with Titanium Backup may cause problems.
Many thanks for your answers!

You do not need to uninstall first. You should have an email account associated with the Line Naver. It will be under settings/accounts/email account registration.
You just reactivate your Line account on your new rom. You will lose your chat history. Titanium Backup does not work with Line Naver. I have tried multiple times. It only makes a difference if you want to backup and restore your chat history, which cannot be done. Otherwise just flash away.

I passed from Samsung ROM to CM10.1 yesterday, and restoring Line with Titanium Backup causes Line to Force Close.
BUT I tried letting TB restore the old device ID (gives you message when you run it for the first time on a new ROM), and after that Line worked again, restoring all the settings, Chat history, photos, etc... seems it binds itself to the Android Device ID.
My titanium backup never ask me to restore device id, and I flash different roms every other day.

How did you restore the old device ID? I only see restore app/date in backup, and I don't see anything in the Special menu either...
Nevermind, I found it. Need to backup Settings Storage.apk, then if you flash a new ROM, go to Titanium Backup menu, and choose the Manage Android ID to restore the ID on the new ROM...
Interesting...
New version of Line Naver "supposedly" have the restore chat history function. From what I can tell you have to backup each chat session individually. I'll install a new rom later and see if the restore option really works.

Just installed it as well and saw the import button. Backing up my chats and installing a new rom to see if it works as well. Hmmm
It's too bad this version of Line loses the option of "choosing a photo from app". Now when you want to add photo, it brings you straight to their own photo album app. Before I can choose my emoticons photo app, but no longer.

Well, at least the import worked.
Backup whole history chat of Naver-LINE in one time without rooted permission

In my case, the number of chat sessions are almost 100. Is there any way to backup whole history chat of Naver-LINE without rooted permission.
Thanks in advance.

backing up

I flashed my first ROM yesterday; JellyBam 5.
I was a bit hesitant though worked out ok I guess, apart from a fc due to trying to instal my email backup from TB, I googled a fix for the fc issue, then realised that also my contacts & calendar won't instal from TB backup, I assume this is cause I've gone from 2.3.5 to 4.2.1??
Also, apart from calendar, email and contacts, I've had random apps not work, either won't instal or simply fc.. what's up? and can it be fixed? how? compatibility issue?
In this case what's the best way to backup to ensure cross ROM compatibility of calendar entries, email accounts & contacts data...
I guess Google account right, but I've never been able to get mine to sync, so I'm asking for suggestions/advice other than using Google sync.
Thanks

You can't restore System Apps, because they definitly won't work if you change your rom, and it sounds like you did. You haven't got a Google back up? Maybe try to restore your Nandroid back up and sync them, or somebody must have a better sollution..

I understand about system apps, though the apps I've had problems with were just normal (non system) apps.
I'm pretty shocked my email accounts, contacts and calendar won't restore (It'll take ages to do all manually); I will either revert back to my original ROM unless someone can advise more ?

Replacing stock messaging app?

Hello all!
Since I have a Samsung (Galaxy Core Prime G360V to be specific), I have to suffer from Samsung's crappy stock messaging app, ugly yellow/orange color and all. My desperation to replace this app led me to this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-cm-app-installer-t2959922 and the CM App Installer. After playing with the CM messaging app on my sister's phone I have fallen in love with its level of customization and UI in general.
However, it has not been easy to install. For one, the APK wants to install as an update to the stock messenger. Obviously this "update" does not work and I am forced to find another way to use this texting app.
So my question is: How do I install a different messaging app and replace my stock one? Or maybe: How do I install an update APK as a different app entirely?
Thanks for reading, and I would appreciate any input from noobs and the experienced alike

You should be able to to use the Cyanogenmod App Installer to install the messaging app you want selecting the non-root install option. Then you can go into into settings, then find your old messaging app and select clear defaults then when you run the CM messaging app it should ask you if you want to set that as default so select the CM messaging app and always. If the CM messaging app doesn't work I would recommend taking a look at this article here that feature some great messaging apps. If you need any more help just let me know happy to help .

Sounds like a logical solution, but the thing is I can't install the app because it is the same package as the one I currently use (com.android.mms). If I knew how to change the app package name then maybe your suggestions would work. Maybe com.cyanogen.mms?

Sorry for the delayed reply, I would recommend just installing a different messaging app that way it doesn't have the same package name. A lot of newer messaging apps will have very similar features to what you are looking for. Then once it's installed go into settings find old messaging app, clear defaults, start the new messaging app and it should prompt you to always use that as default.

Yes, I am now using Google Messenger. The only problem I really have is that I have to toggle my mobile data to send/receive MMS. The stock messenger never had that problem. I'm going to stick with Google for a while and if the MMS thing becomes a bigger problem I will probably switch back to stock for consistency. I'm getting the Moto G5 Plus soon so it won't matter in a few months anyway
