Sony STM10 - Xperia Z2 Accessories

Hey guys
Got my Z2, and loving it 85% of the time, still a few kinks id like ironed out, but hey ho! Anyway one of the biggest things I think will be an issue is the microiphone. Doesn't seem a great recording source for anything loud or bass heavy.
I have seen the STM10 that you can get and its an intriguing bit of kit! Anyone got any reviews or experience with one? Its mostly going to be used for videos of music at festivals etc and would love to know if it is up to the job.
The other thing is it seems quite cumbersome, and wondered if anyone has any alternatives? It wouldn't be ideal to have with me at a music festival really (damage and or loss after a few ciders!) so is there a smaller one thats as good that anyone knows of?
Any info would be great

Hey mate, I'm chasing an external microphone for my Z2 too. I've enquired with Sony on FB and they said they'd get back to me soon so fingers crossed. In the meantime the Edutige EIM-004 looks very promising as it has a much better response to loud noises than their EIM-001. There's some Youtube videos of it in action at concerts and the difference is HUGE.
Here's the link if you're interested http://www.edutige.net/shop/eim-004/
I'll keep you posted if I hear anything about the STM10 too!

Thats really helpful! Thank you. I will take a look at the videos when I can

If you have the noise cancelling headphones you can use them as a microphone. Just change settings to microphone in smart connect.

Yeah I believe so, however I sold my headphones that came with the phone before knowing this. Damn! Haha

I've had the chance to test that out last night.
Sound was about 100-105DB and the Bass was HEAVY!
Internal
Headphone's stereo mic
well yeah xD too loud is too loud! even headphones stereo mic can't help you there.
p.s how much would a STM10 cost ?

Just a Tipp....
Did you guys try the stereo recording feature? You need to connect the nc-headset, so the phone uses the build in mics in the earbuds. Its a big difference in comparison to internal mic.

But the iblazr one has a built-in battery, the 3.5 mm connector is use only for data transfer, probable reason is that they wanted to be cross compatible with ios and android. So with a built-in battery, I think Sony could very easily pull-off a xenon flash accessory that plugs in to either the usb or 3.5 mm port.

Cider, lol.

So how many people have the stm10 mic? I'm really keen on buying it this weekend its just a matter of seeing what people actually think. I've seen some reviews but I'm not 100% on it yet
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

I own the STM 10. The quality of recorded audio is way better

I have STM10 and used it once. I can't judge the quality as I found that the sound is more or less the same (internal mic quality is good).

I want to connect an ordinary 3.5mm external microphone to Z2, but couldn't achieve that yet. This CTIA jack is really interesting, and has 5 pins.
Any advices how to do this?

I also have the STM10 and can confirm that it is very good at recording sound. Particularly in loud environments. I was at a gabba techno night this weekend and recorded some video with the microphone attached and I was very impressed. I will post the video to give you an idea later on this evening. For the money (around £30) it is well worth purchasing and looks pretty sweet when attached as well.

Hello everybody !
As i promised, here it is a video of Beyonce and Jay-Z concert at Stade de France that i record in UHD with STM10 with my Xperia Z2.
I confirm that the quality of the mic is just great !!! I'm really happy that i bought this mic before this concert
Enjoy !

Hey dude can you please confirm is STM10 works with non-Sony devices???

poor video recorded sound quality

Just wondering what you guys think of it? I go to a lot of concerts and music festivals and the video quality on the note is superb. However, the sound from the video is horrible. The one thing that me and my friends all agree upon is the video sound recording on the iphone is better than any phone out there. The note simply cannot handle loud sounds, particularly really loud bass. The sound on the whole video is just off and it sounds like the microphone is in direct wind. Dont get me wrong, I love the note and I am an android fanboy, however I think this is an area which the iphone dominates. What do you guys think about the sound recording quality? Is there anyway to fix this through software? hardware?
never found a problem with audio from video recordings. few weeks ago i was filming a drift event at a local track and sound came out fine with all the loud noises going on.
Speaking of, do you guys have any YouTube links of vids with your note?
I just can't seem to live with out a removable storage, and I have been leaning in the notes direction.
I am just worried about video, and pic quality with the note...I had a 4g galaxy s and the pics were awful.
Sorry if I am hijacking.
What's your honest.opinions about vid quality?

the playback of audio recorded with a video is going to bad if you are recording anything with a lot of bass or any high dB sounds that are above the microphones ability to capture. These phones use a microphone thats really just a small speaker, when loud sounds are being emitted and your trying to capture them they can ofter "bottom out" the microphone so that all you hear is loud static distortion or if the bass is really heavy, nothing at all.

I think the video quality is awesome on this phone. I haven't watched them on any external devices though, my opinion is purely off of viewing the videos off the phone.
As far as the drift meet you went to, I'm pretty sure the note can handle the sounds of screeching tires, I am mainly talking about BASS. I understand that almost all devices have a certain limit until the microphone can no longer handle the strong bass. The sound gets distorted, and you can't hear anything else. All I am saying is that somehow the iphone is able to handle strong bass at a concert even when you are standing pretty close to the stage. Anyone else experience the distorted sound on their note?
I have personally experienced this and it must be due to the different build qualities of the microphone. Is it possible to attach an external microphone via the headphone jack and use that to record video sound rather than using the one built into the phone? that would make a huge difference IMO

http://youtu.be/N06GsbGyh28 shot this 2 weeks ago, first time messing with video on the phone, i was impressed by the clarity of both picture and sound, just need a dern zoom feature while filming
also not sure why your expecting amazing quality sound from recording a live performance, no matter what phone if ur close to the speakers your not going to get non distorted sound, ive owned every iphone and never heard clear quality sound after going back and watching vids i took at partys and such, i do belive i saw something on engadget the other day about a better quality mic u can plug into the headphones jack
http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/irig-mic-cast-hands-on/ well its for idevices but im sure there has to be something similar for android
I was just thinking about this before bed last night. I was looking at some recently shot kareoke videos from my note. The audio quality is absolutely horrendous. Like...disappointing bad.
My atrix was was leaps and bounds better. Was able to handle (and reproduce) bass just fine. Never distorted the audio like the note does. From concerts (rock mind you) to kareoke, anything...I guess its an unfortunate con ill have to live with.

I know exactly what you mean, in terms of capturing sound at, say...a concert. It is overpowered. I've heard that one way to tackle this problem is to put tape, or a finger, over the mic hole when recording.
Here's a vid I took when I saw The Black Keys a cpl months ago. I even wrote in the description that it's a shame the sound is crappy...

I am not expecting amazing sound quality, just good enough so that it doesnt sound like crap. Obviously microphones on phones have their limits, but as I have stated, and as others in this thread have stated, the note is pretty bad at recording sound. My girlfriend has an iphone and all of my friends have iphones, and trust me, the sound recording is much better on it. Still love my Note though, best phone ever!
I seen rammstein and just like the others said.. Very loud sounds makes the audio sound very muffled and hard to hear.. I wonder if I had the the recording volume set halfway. If it would of sounded better?
Intro rammstein:

I can tell you this, its way better than HTCs Video playback. Their sound quality is low.

I found a solution by connecting the ear set of the phone and using it`s mic to rec sound. At levels as high as 110db that i tested (in a consert)
Sound quality was audible enough. So thats my pov on this subject. You should try it.

[Q] Poor sound from Z Ultra

Good day expert,
I love Sony Xperia Ultra Z. But I found out that Xperia Z Ultra can't perform a good phone function especially the speaker. The sound produced from the speaker is really low and unclear especially during phone call. This doesn't help even I have put it to loudspeaker. I have adjusted the volume control to max. I barely listen clearly the others party conversation. I feel shame.
I even tried the setting of (Normal, Bright, ..., slow talk) but it doesn't help. I confirmed it is not my Z Ultra defect as I checked others Z Ultra at retail store. All have the same poor and low sound output from the speaker.
How to really enjoy such a great phone if the sound produced is not loud and clear?
The sound really not acceptable (blur and poor volume output).
Seeking for help from SONY and experts.
Here is how I've ranked the audio (headphones) performance:
1)Nokia Phones (N9/Lumia)
2) HTC One X
3) iPhone 4s
4) Xperia Z Ultra
in regards to speaker output, i believe because of its placement vs. HTC OneX, for me its an improvement
I hope there are mods to increase the stock speaker volume as well as beats audio algorithms for music because its lacking right now!
only dumb people can talk about poor sound from external dynamic on water proof devices. Sorry but I'm sick and tired of threads like this.
Sound through headphones is beautiful and very audiophiliac with ClearAudio+ (enable)
Try to change your build prop at system and see what happen. You can search for xda forum to see how to change your build prop for increase device volume.
But first you need to rooted device.

You should have researched well before buying. Almost all reviews noted that the 2 weaknesses of the ultra are speaker volume and lack of flash. Most of us knew this and bought it, as this is truly a great device.

I don't really know why so many people complain about it. It's pretty par for the course in terms of tiny "external" speakers. Fairly tinny, but loud enough to be too loud in a quiet room. Note that the volume drops by a large amount after submerging the device in water. You need to wait for the speaker grille to purge itself of liquid before the volume returns.

I agree with you 100%. I have no idea how anyone can complain about the audio quality.
The audio quality on my Ultra is great. The in-call volume is sufficient and the sound is perfectly good both on both sides.
I just don't care about the speakers too much since I use headphones. I wouldn't even think about the idea of using a phone as a "stereo" by playing music through its speakers.
The audio quality through headphones is great too. I certainly agree that it provides high quality even for "mobile audiophile use".

I do hope the Bluetooth Headset (is it SBH52?) can keep up with the Good quality Audio... I don't want to plug in my headphones directly on the phone since the earphone jack's placement is awkward if you ask me.. It would be better if it was placed on the top edge and not on the side.
I use wired headphones, bluetooth headphones and headsets and stream audio bluetooth in my car. I don't really need or actually think that a phone's speakers are all that important so I am glad to have efforts focused elsewhere. I'd get a Jawbone Jambox or something similiar if I really needed good audio from speakers on the go.
I have a friend who has an HTC One and I agree they are the best speakers I have heard on a smartphone but I still think they are pretty crappy. I appreciate the speakers on my Nexus 10 but again I think it is a waste of time ever expecting good speakers on a small and slim device.
Errrr....

Well, I got that he was talking about the earpiece volume, but it also seemed he was saying that switching to the loud speaker didn't help either and I guess the thread evolved from there.
Anyway, a headset of some description should help in either case.
You're right though a couple of people did jump on him a bit harshly but it is pretty normal for people to get defensive about their devices.

I dont mind the sound, but make sure your ear is over the speaker on top. Its a big phone if you go to the right or left it will sound muffled. Maybe you are already doing this but if not try it. Night and day for me.
Nio doubt quality is great but speaker sound is not sufficient, atleast you guys agree on this despite the fact it is waterproof or what ever!!!!!!!

[Q] Microphone issues on Xperia Z2?

Hi everyone,
One of my motivations for moving from LG G2 to the Xperia Z2, is for 4K video. But in watching the different 4K clips posted on YouTube from the Mobile Congress, there appears to be a significant microphone issue.
It sounds as if there are no lows or mid-frequencies. The sound is very squashed and unlike anything I've heard from any cellphone I've ever owned. My concern also extends to phone calls. If the same mike and processing is used for phone calls, this doesn't bode well for call quality. Are there any Z1 owners having the same microphone issue?

I'm really hoping that is the case. The audio quality we've seen in the Z2 camera test clips in Youtube is just unacceptable. But then I think that isn't something Sony could mess up that bad, especially when the camera is a big selling point.

i don't know exactly but isn't it because of built-in digital-noise cancellation??

Z2's built-in digital-noise cancellation, works only with Sony's MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset.I just hope that this microphone issues that can be heard in the demo units, won't affect overall call quality!

I just bought the Z2 and everyone I have called or talked to over the phone, has complained that I talk too low :crying:
Right now I'm actually investigating if others had this issue and stumbled over your thread I too had a LG G2 and I changed, because the camera was so bad when taking pictures of people moving or not standing COMPLETELY still etc.
Anyway I haven't found anything yet with Google about the problem, But I do hope it's a software issue and not hardware, because everything else is just so good.

because most users tend to pretend the issue doesn't exist if they don't use a particular feature often...i mentioned about the lousy mic and got ignored by everyone
For your benefit here's an example of the audio recording abilities for the Z2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoCAJXDL_9k
To test the mic you really need the worst conditions possible..and there you have it. sounds exactly like my samsung galaxy S1 4 years ago, and possibly the worst among the flagships out there(iphone still has the best audio recording...damn. lol) no idea why sony messed this up. buying the STM10 mic doesn't change the fact that the mic is there to ENHANCE the sound...not cover up a subpar standard feature lol.

My Z2 records perfect sound. With all the frequencies apparent and clean.
Any news about terrible sound quality?
Hi.
I record some videos on a festival last week. The sound is absolutely terrible. Especially if there is loud music.
If i see videos from the Festival that are all record with other phones, they sound very good . Even my Xperia ZL makes fantastic sound if i record a video.
So is there any solution for this?
To buy the "Sony STM10 Stereo Microphone" cannot be a solution.
Thanks
Not good is it? I find the G3, M8 and almost all Lumia's adjust the levels for better audio where the Z2 does not. So perhaps you are supposed to buy the mic!
All sony phones have the same problem.
Mic working great
It's well known that Xperia Z2 has a very sensible high gain microphone because of water isolation. That makes your recordings, specially high decibels recordings such as gigs, sound awful. There is a great solution for this, install niaboc's rom (Existenz 3.1.0) and change the microphone gain to low, that will make you record with great quality.
I made some video recordings at a music festival with my z2. And it was awful. I was abit disappointed. It was all distorted. But then again that's very loud noise at a festival. Although it should be better than it is. Like I say it was all crackly and distorted and can't hear the music properly at all from what I recorded.
Will probably sound and record alot better with the mic accessorie. Though in my opinion, it should be fine without it.
But other videos recorded not at festival sound fine

I think it's pretty great, I got the Noise Cancelling headphones and never really tried any other except my Beats Mixr which is fantastic too. And I think the Speakers got louder on the latest .314 firmware. Maybe someone else should confirm this as I had been on CM for some time now.
I cant comment on g3 cos i havnt got it, but if u dont mind rooting the z2, viper4android makes it sound awesome

Viper4android lover here as well.
...as an audiophile I can say that z2 commited best ever sound I've ever heard from smartphone
...it's sounds very natural without any enhacements just plug and play from the box
...I'm using it with kef m200 and sound is so powerfull natural and open wide that listening via z2 is real extasy for ears
...also sbh80 sounds more elegant than z1 or z ultra (sound-crap)

...I'm happy very much ...its almost real feeling sound with plenty of bass which is very natural punchy and soft ...very similar to kefs hifi floor speakers which I have ...absolut soundstage and a lot of details ...for every kind of music
tried two 32gb/3gb LG G3 devies both had slight hissing/crackling noise on left earphone when listening to music,it seems some G3/g2 users are having the same issue.................z2 is definitely better..............check the following link

Z2 using noise cancelling earphones and poweramp app beats LG G3 and Galaxy S5 hands down easy

Sbh52 sony bluetooth vs lg tone ultra?

I'm planning on buying a bluetooth. But not 100% sure which 1 I should get I'm mainly looking to use it when I'm biking. Any suggestions any other bluetooth names, models would be good too thanks.

I vote for the lg tone ultra's...I have them and love them but the 700's are fine too. The sound quality is outstanding on both with the ultra's edging out the 700's. I have both so I can speak from experience. I use the 700's for exercising and the ultra's for my daily commute. I bought some cheap 30 euro pair and that was a mistake. Tried the delycon's and those weren't great either. I haven't used any other bluetooth headphones besides those.

I'm seeing mixed reviews does the noise cancelling work really good?

The noise cancelling is good for like on the train/subway when I commute in the mornings and afternoons. Otherwise, the noise canceling is not true noise cancelling to me. I think the sound quality on the ultra's is better but if you have the 730's, i think they had already had upgraded the sound to jbl by that time. I had only the 700's since the 730's weren't available here in europe. I think the bass is richer and the high's better on the ultra's but I'm no audio expert.

No I haven't but I'll be sure to... LG had done a bang up job with the headphones.
Do the Ultra's work well for working out? I'm usually a very sweaty person, so I need a noise cancelling blue tooth that isn't too expensive, like these, and this is the only problem I have before I buy them.
Here's one vote for the sonys.
I dislike rubber and foam earbud tips (work outside, and I like to hear things around me) So being able to use any ear buds or headset with it is great.
Plus on those lgs if one of the earbuds somehow get snagged and break, your sol. Not so with the Sonys, just get another set of ear buds.
But that's just my take.

The ultra's are not cheap. I paid like 80 euros so that's about 100 dollars for these. If you're sweaty person, I might not go for these because the thing lays around your neck. I have no problems with it but I don't have sweat issues. I would think that the sweat may get on and around the neck band and that could short out the electronics. Someone else maybe able to talk on this issue.
The delycons and the cheap Aldi brand that I bought here were the kind that has a single cord connecting the earphones and basically went around the back of your head. I liked the design better of those but the sound quality sucked and they were not noise cancelling. I haven't been able to really find anything besides the plantronics backbeats but those have mixed reviews too. I might still consider them because of the design and the immense amount of money I've already spent on trying all these bluetooth headphones.
Not sure if this was said
I will say those LG Tones "magically" and randomly move around your neck lol. One side will hang further then the other. Read some reviews out there and you will see what I'm saying
Speaking from experience owning the 730's
