Greetings,
I have an S4 with MDK and it is currently running a Hyperdrive ROM. I want to upgrade it to a KK ROM of some flavor. I put SS on, thinking I would need it, but it looks like SS makes it more difficult? I believe that because the bootloader is locked, I can't just install a plain version of TWRP, correct?
So, for those with MDK who are now running KK, what did you do, what did you use, and in what order?
Thank you!

So if you're on MDK with a custom rom then what recovery are you using?
The MDK bootloader has a loki exploit so you can just use a loki'd version of TWRP or CWM to flash any 4.4 rom. Find them in the original android development section

If you are still on MDK the go to this section http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/orig-development and look for a 4.4 you would like. I believe Sbreen has a 4.4 of Hyperdrive in the works right now so if you like Hyperdrive, wait maybe if you want to?
Your post confuses me a little. If you updated the phone off of MDK and now on another baseband now then you will have to use SS and follow the instructions on how to go to 4.4 and back to 4.2 if you have to. Here is a link if you are on NC2/MK2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868.
If you have NC2/MK2/MI1/ME7 then you CAN NOT have a Custom Recovery like TWRP or CWM. You will have to use SS and go from there.

I currently have stock rom and recovery and kernel rooted and want cwm so I can finally get a custom rom installed ^^. How would I install cwm?

You can't. I suggest you look at some of threads talking about boot loaders.... Safestrap . mj7 is fully locked down. Hash code is working on porting his safestrap to work on 4.3 bases
powered by hashcode safestrap hyperdrive 10.2

I'm not sure what you are asking. You want to go back to me7 or mi1? You definitely can't go back to mdk....

Sadly, this gets repeated over and over:
If you upgrade past MDK, you can't bypass the bootloader, which means you can't install custom recovery or custom kernels.
Once you install a release, you usually can't install any prior release (the only exception is that MK2 can be downgraded to MJ7).
Hi guys, I'm currently running a Hyperdrive RLS10 ROM, but I'm looking into the future with the new KitKat release, and I was interested in trying some of those features when sbreen updates his Hyperdrive ROM. Thing is, I'm a Verizon ME7 user with an MDK phone, and I have no idea how to take advantage of these new features, as from what I read so far, a simple reflash won't work. Can someone tell me exactly what I have to do to get from ME7 to MJ7 and still have my app data and messages? The rest I could reconfigure but I really need to keep the app data.
I've read things about having to ODIN back to stock, and whatnot, but won't that technically kill all the stuff on my phone with no recovery? :/
EDIT: after a bit of looking I'm reading that since I have an MDK phone it's actually fairly valuable for this, but I don't get exactly what for.

Because you can flash ROMs via TWRP.
MDK has the LOKI exploit available with a bootloader that can be bypassed or hijacked.
Look in the ROM area.
You will find what you need.
There are ROMs based on MJ7 4.3 that won't screw up your phone.
You just need TWRP.

Will I need to ODIN or any of that though? And Hyperdrive is at the moment based on 4.3 MJ7 so all I need to do is have TWRP and then I can just flash RLS12 onto my phone like a regular ROM installation?

what recovery do have loaded and how did you flash HD10? You would flash any custom rom the same way. As long as you haven't taken any OTAs or odin'd a higher level firmware you should be good to go

Depends, is phone a MK2 build or MDK? Many people get baseband and build number mixed up. They are not the same thing
If its MK2 build you can't load a recovery like TWRP or CWM as the bootloader, since MDK is fully lock down. You only option is safestrap and a handful of safestrap compatible ROMS.
plenty of info here that you need to know. Plenty of threads to digest
Mine is MK2 Build. It's already rooted with safestrap. So will any Safestrap ROM work? As long as I flash the MK2 add on?

Yes... And like he said there really are only a handful of safestrap ROMs... I'd suggest trying out hyper drive first and see how you like it.

thats correct. If a ROM is safestrap compatible and you flash the kernel module associated with your build.
Please note, that hyperdrive has a SPECIFIC safestrap ROM, don't download the other one. I have tried everyone to date and still go back to HD12

I'll second that...
Have tried all of them and keep going back to hyperdrive. It's definitely a great starting point.

If you like the look of inverted, vanilla AOSP, look into Eclipse ROM. The developer, well known here, is nitroglycerine33. He is currently working on a Safestrap version of his Eclipse ROM so people like us with locked bootloaders can use his ROM. It has that beautiful AOSP look, and has really excellent battery life.
Cheers
Hello. I am currently running CM10.2 on my Verizon gs4. I want to flash hyperdrive instead.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
This link tells me that I need to use safestrap but.. I'd rather not if I don't need to. Will I be able to do so? Also, where can I find the latest hyperdrive ROM for my phone?

If you're running CM then you have MDK. You don't need Safestrap. You should research first.

Yes, to add further explanation:
1) Since you can flash a ROM (CM) without Safestrap, it means that your bootloader is version MDK. KEEP IT THAT WAY. Anything later is locked and will not let you flash a ROM *without* Safestrap, much less a non-Touchwiz ROM like CM.
2) While there IS a Safestrap version of Hyperdrive, you do not need Safestrap to flash Hyperdrive. Use the other version of Hyperdrive, the one marked "---FOR MDK Base( TWRP/CWM Installation)" in post #2.
3) You generally only need Safestrap if you have a locked bootloader (later than MDK).

Thank you. I have done research. I've been scouring the web for the last 3 days trying to figure this out but I couldn't find anything. That is why I asked here. Also is the link I provided the latest hyperdrive rom? I can't seem to find a website with all versions.

Hello there, xda! I've been having quite a few issues installing Cyanogenmod (and many other custom ROMs) onto my Gs4 and was wondering if someone might be able to walk me through the steps of installing the custom ROM on my specific device. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Verizon with Android 4.4.2 and NC5 as my baseband.

If you don't have the MDK bootloader with the Loki hack, you cannot run CM and other AOSP based roms. There is a ROM however that's safe strap compatible

Thank you for that suggestion! But do you know if it's possible to downgrade from NC5 to MDK or earlier versions? I would rather do that than use safestrap, honestly.

Nope. Not possible at all. Your only option is Safestrap.
