Until about 30 minutes ago, I had the stock 4.2.2 that came with my S4 when I bought it.
Every day it would ask me to update and I kept on delaying it and telling it another time...
Until today, when it popped up while I was using my phone and fingers hit it into the (apparently) pre-downloaded update.
Not wanting to brick it mid-update I let it go and am now on 4.3.
While I haven't yet rooted my device, I did intend to, but haven't followed along with rooting an S4.
So my question is, how screwed am I?

Well hopefully you weren't on MDK 4.2 prior to this since that's the build you could had a true custom recovery on. Most likely though you were not since now your on 4.3.
You're not screwed you can still easily root it and install SafeStrap if you want to. I'd suggest root it and freeze SDM so you can stay on 4.3 where things are just easier. Wait for kit kat to be out a little longer and all the upgrade/root methods to be perfected

Nothing is more comforting to know that I could of done worse than I already had.
I gotta learn to do it right off the bat -- this phone is about 7 months old. No excuse to not have found time to do it
But thanks, I'll get right on it

Hey guys, I'm gonna be picking up a Razr either today or tomorrow to keep my unlimited data. I'm not new to rooting at all but I was wondering should I root it then wait for ICS in the next couple days (if it isn't available already) or should I just wait until after I update to ICS then root it and go from there? I've done a lot of searching but I'm a bit confused on which method to use to root it safely and most likely use safestrap, so would you guys be able to help point me in the right direction? I've already convinced myself that it is still definitely worth buying a Razr instead of a SIII because of the quality and my preferences even though it may be a few months old.
Thanks in advance!
I'm receiving a replacement RAZR Maxx by FedEx today. The phone I'm sending back has been rooted since I unboxed it and i successfully side loaded, and have been running ICS for the past two days.
I'll be banking on the official OTA to reach me this week or next and I'll probably 'limp along' with a stock, unrooted GB phone until it comes. After the OTA arrives I'll root, briefly consider a custom recovery - I find myself not dabbling much with custom roms so probably skip a custom recovery - and set up my apps that need root permissions.
For rooting after ICS, Matt's Utility v. 1.7 works without a hitch. I'll use it again. Just know that there's about 3 or 4 other methods available.
Thanks for the reply man, I'll probably end up doing the exact same thing as you. I just hope ICS doesn't take too long to get to me.
Thanks again.
I'm not sure if all of these have been addressed or have a direct answer, but I just wanted to compile everything into
a concise post that I can refer to.
I SHOULD be getting my DNA in the mail today and it SHOULD be fresh out of the box and I am basing the questions off
of that.
Reason for rooting is mainly for the wifi tether app, since I have unlimited data and rather use that then pay for actual service.
1.) Since it should be fresh out of the box are the chances of it being unupdated likely? If so this means I can root it, correct?
2.) I'm pretty new in the rooting field, having only recently rooted my thunderbolt. How comparable will the process be to that?
I had to backdate the software or firmware to be able to do so and am hoping since this is new it wont require that.
3.) I haven't messed with roms too much and was looking at the ViperDNA rom, what would the perks of doing this be? Cons?
I may have future questions later, but this is all I can think of atm.
Thanks ahead of time!

I can almost guarantee you that the OTA will be installed on it and you will not be able to do anything with it until an exploit is found.
The root and S-off process is very easy if you are on the old firmware.
Crap, really? It's the same, power on + vol down process correct?
Even booting up the phone, this is talking if the OEM isn't updated, won't auto start the update, will it?

Boot it up without the sim in it. Let us know, as of last week I would have told you that it's probably not updated. But its been a few days since I've known anyone that got one new in the box.
If it's not updated and you would like me to help you pull and supercid and unlock just send me a pm. If you get offered the update you will want to defer it like 5 days I think is the most it allows.

Yea, I just got it an hour or so ago and booted right into the loader and asked in the IRC and I guess the OTA
was already accepted, so I'm sol for a bit.
Not even going to bother activating it, since I mainly use root for tethering.
I picked up the DNA in San Diego from BB for an upgrade on Verizon. It came with Software 1.15.605.4 710RD. I've s-off'd, root'd & TWRP'd with ease. Now I just need CM10.1 and I'll be happy.
I might fly to France and b-slap the CEO of the company who put the DCMA in.

What's the outlook? Any updates on whether or not it will happen? I just got a 32gb s4 from big red, with me7 naturally, and am now strongly considering leaving for T Mobile even though getting a 32gb for them sounds like a pain.
I just went to 5 different retailers hunting for an MD phone and no one has one to my dismay. Maybe I should just settle for the HTC One if both of my options are locked devices.

Have there been any phones that have came out thus far that haven't been able to be rooted? Seems like people easily got around every attempt to lock down android thus far so my hopes are high for this. However it does seem like a long time has passed with quite the sum of money at hand.

err ya my bad I meant bootloader/recovery cracked. I know they had to safestrap the razr line but I think eventually they even cracked that. And even so anything to install custom roms would be great even if safestrap type solutions are kind of annoying to use.
I hope they get a recovery for us soon. I'm getting bord with this phone.

I am definitely ready for a new ROM too. Touchwhiz is depressing haha. I'm definitely surprised there isn't more people trying to unlock the bootloader with such a big bounty on the table.
My new replacement S4 came with MDK. If I unlock the bootloader before upgrading to ME7, does ME7 re-lock it? I'm putting off the upgrade notice until I know for sure.

You cant actually unlock the bootloader, there is just a workaround for recovery on mdk so if you update then you lose recovery. I think there is a stock rom in development that leaves out yhe bootloader and is rooted...

No reason to try something that risky. Root, use Loki to bypass the locked bootloader, and flash something new. There's quite a few ME7-based ROMs that you can use to get all the benefits of the upgrade without losing control of the phone.

First, I apologize if this ins't the right area but it seems like a General question.
I recently bought a Kindle Fire HDX 7" and have had it about a week now. With all the Amazon Bloat and lack of Google apps I need more out of it. I am not a beginner with flashing roms and such, my HTC One is Rooted, CyanogenModed, and has a boot loader, anyways...
I have spent the last couple days reading up on the ways to do it on the HDX 7 and heard many warnings and bricks of this device, but some of the posts are a little bit older. I can't really tell which method of Rooting/Flashing is the safest out of all the different ones. My current OS version is 13.3.2.1. Using the Safestrap looks pretty easy and from what I understand is that even if you do brick it you can recover the original?
My question is... Is it any safer to flash a Rom lately (due to the updating problems?), and how safe is just rooting it for the time being? Also, what method/tools would you suggest to use? I don't like the FireOS and would like to get it close the a standard Android and/or CyanogenMod.
Thanks for your time.
well

actually you came just in time and have the right firmware and place go to the development section and start reading we now have a brand new recovery that bypasses the security on our bootloader. I would advise reading reading these threads thoroughly. And your particular software is rootable with the existing utilities we have in the development section also. There has been a lot of development very recent keep in mind they are first version may be buggy but the utility .94 can get you rooted and safe from updates until you can do more research. And get your new recovery in place.
Thanks, by what you said I am guessing the internal workings haven't been figured out quite yet. I will head over to the development boards and see if I can find. Sadly I updated to FireOS 4.5 not knowing that there wasn't software to to roll back for versions above 1X but read that I can call Amazon and have it rolled back so no worries.

I actually just got it rolled back, I read that people saying it doesn't happen anymore, but the very nice tech lady down graded me from 4.5.1 to 13.3.2.7. She stayed on the phone until it was completly reset. =) Now I should be able to root it easily with towelroot.
I was being pretty damn charming to her though, lol
I'm sure they don't want to and won't do it most of the time, but I is still 100% possible on their end, it's just wether they want to or not. I had a pretty decent story too, not just 'its slow and buggy'

after rolling back a couple of them it helps if you say that it was on version 3 then you updated to the latest one then make up some plausable combination of symptoms for example the one i went with is that my device restarts alone every 20 minutes or so and almost no apps work and then proceed to say that you were happy with how it was before it was updated
EDIT:also to note that i have yet to have them refuse me a single time through chat
well

I have just been reading about several people that have been rejected and why. There is a rumor that they gave it to their developers only and their technicians will go through your device logs and decide whether or not it is appropriate. Again rumor. I do not need roll back at least so far I have stuck with the old software all year...I just hate having to mess with trying to keep the OTA blocked. I just want them to take me off the ota push servers.
Model SCH-I545/OS: 5.0.1 Lollipop/Baseband v: I545VRUGOF1/Kernel v: 3.4.0/Build #: LRX22C
I just want to know if there is any means at all to get any 4.4.X/anything that will make this compatible with SS?
I had HyperDrive on my SGS3 & loved it and, in the end, I would like to have it on this, if, at all, possible...
I was on 4.4.2 KitKat when I originally bought it, rooted it with KingRoot and, as mentioned in one of my past posts, a friend upgraded to this "Lollipop crap" and I hate it!
Is there any means at all of getting SS or whatever it may take to get Hyperdrive KK RLS21 even through Odin or flashing anothe ROM through FlashFire then proceeding from there to Odin?
I just don't care right now or am I stuck on Lollipop and having to find a FF/Lollipop based ROM?
fwiw, I also had kitkat when i bought these 2 phones for $600/ea, both kept tricking us, that little nag that keeps appearing, and occassionally looks a little different, which is also boobytrapped, you find ways of disabling it, then it disables your disable and you get scr* into taking the update. I was pretty new to android when i got the phones, but one of the 1st things i read, stick with kitkat, don't let that little b* update itself. But it's smarter than i am apparently.
My versions are very similar to yours- 1545vrug0f1, 5.01 (thanks to samsung scr* us), 3.40, lrx22c
They scr* us into taking the update, and then they scr* us into not being able to either go back to the original or something better (CM ideally). I didn't know better at the time, i should have taken the time to read more, this company doesn't deserve to be the multibillion dollar conglomerate it is, but people keep buying the new stuff without reading first (fool me once...). I'll never buy another samsung thingamajig.
Ya, I used to love Samsung's Galaxy S series phones! My first smartphone was the SGS1 way back around 2010 then, never had the S2, I had 2 S3's, now the S4 and can honestly say this crap they're pulling now is really making me think twice about whether or not they're my favorite smartphone company any more!
No way to go back to kitkat
Thx for the confirmation, I kinda figured as much but wanted to be sure.
fwiw, some people are insisting that it can be done, confirmation anyone?

It has been confirmed on mine, SCH-I545 on 5.0.1 (OF1), downloaded KingRoot directly to my phone and ran it, worked like a charm, just sucks I can't go back to 4.4.2!
Tempted to try, but reading of too many phones trashed. Unreal that sprint can screw people over intentionally and get away with it. No doubt they've protected themselves (fine print etc), but that's what makes it manipulative. Thanks for confirming.
