[Q] How to root Omnirom kernel - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys
b4 i tell my problem id like to apologize in case that this was already discussed or in case my knowledge of android aint yet "high" enough.
To understand me fully ill write the whole story that ive done on my mobile in the quote.
P/s: its for my 1st time having an android in my hands.. so all my knowledge gained was during yesterday and today.
Yesterday i received the S2 i9100M from canada with gingerbread and sim locked.
Later that day, after i done a little reasearch on forums.. i succeed to root and unblock it ( sim unblock) - used galaxy_s unlock
Cz my CWM was ver 4. i wasnt been able to install OmniROm (kitkat 4.4.2)
Today, i installed a jelly bean version, and install a CWM ver that fits kitkat ~ though i dont know reallly how it changed by it self to TWRP.
After this .. i installed omnirom and gapps (standard pack).
And here is now the problem, i can't unlock again the sim.
As far i understood.. though when turning on the mobile it gives me yellow triangle, that the kernel is not fully rooted (?) ~ also downloaded an application from market, dont remember the name.. but used the same one yeasterday to see if it was rooted or not.
But, IF i want to unlock sim.. i got to have it rooted so id have the possbility to run the superuser and the galaxy_s unlock application.
ps: also i deleted the files that were stored by galaxy_s unlock application, and that causes error in aplication even after reinstalling it. ~ however i hope this is gonna be fixed after flashing the rom again and wipe...
Click to collapse
So the question is : How to root the kernel which is installed by Omnirom ?
Sadly.. i didnt understand much about kernels.. so i ask you how to go through this problem with unlocking the sim..
Meanwhile.. id really like to stay on omni, cz i really like it ~ the simplicity, but in case that there is no chance to stay on it cz of the simcard.. im prepared to use other roms as well (but still preferably kitkat).

update
Heelllo again
since i had no ideas from you, i decided by my self to try instal cyanogenmod rom since it has the option of root. ~ instalation completed and root works as well.
But now.. the the biggest problem i have.. is cz i can't unlock the sim
tried Galaxy_s unlock from helzing(?) but it didnt work out.
tried .. galaxy S2 sim unlock and the app stops at 4/5 ~ the application seems its crashing
also tried one more application (dont remember the name) but it wants to pay 3 dollars to install pro version , while guaranteeing me that it has a code for me ~ and i doubt about this.
Any ideas ?
Ps: sorry in case i shouldnt post again here

Try *#06* in dailer, does that return your imei?
Ans on a side note, omnirom is rooted, you just have to enable it in developer settings, because its set to off as a default

Im sorry to say but you lost your IMEI please follow thread that adresses that issue

Hehe... i didn't =D
u gave me wrong code =D ~ *#06* , BUT its *#06#, thats the reason it gave me that error.
However, now i flashed to jelly bean, and now again to CM (damn kitkat is da best)
Tried again those 2 applications : Galaxy S unlock and Galaxy s2 simunlock
1st.. didn't work =(
2nd.. stopped working at 4/5 process
Is there any other way to do it for free ?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...t/howto-gt-i9100-free-sim-unlock-via-t1064978 may work may not. This is for i9100 so do it at you're very own risk.

ThX, though yeah.. i saw this thread already, but hoped theres a easier and faster method =D (since im kinda in hurry while being w/o mobile to be called/to call)
Well.. probably ill try it later in evening if ill find some free time, and hope this its gonna work.
if it worked for others thn it might work for this one as well.. i hopefully hope =D

well today i installed this rom again, to see.. if i really was so sleepy and didn't see the rooting possibility.
well in anycase.. i didn't find it again. dunno, maybe i missed it somehow, but i doubt there is this chance.
In CM this option for root its easy to find, didn't have same luck/success with omnirom.
~~~
Meanwhile.. i was shocked when i used CM for a while.. just to try it... Battery had 80%, did a reboot and had only 20% -_-
Happend this to me more times, though not more such in big differences, and i can't tell the same to had it on omni.
~~~~
back to my problems...
after trying to get simunlock on : CM kitkat, Omnirom kitkat, Jellybean & Icecream, everytime had the same failure procedure, tried each for at least 3 times.. (i also mean that i totally wiped the system, install the rom, and try again)
in the end of the day, i tried to get on the stock ROM and it worked (gingerbread) ~ used Galaxy S unlock
Now the question is ...
How to install any newer ROM (preferably kitkat xD) w/o loosing the network access ? =D
Sorry if this had been already somewhere posted, haven't yet seen.

Total noob in regards to Sony and customizing

I'm not sure where to start in regards to Sony.
I myself have a Galaxy S2 and read the Bible there and got great advice/suggestions in the forums, but the Sony bit has me confused.
I have an old Xperia X10a sitting collecting dust (it's about 2-3 years old now) and since a relative wants to get a smartphone and an Android more specifically, I thought this would be perfect for her, in case she were to mishandle it or lose it.
So first, I have to unlock the phone.
Then what I'm confused about is this so called "bootloader", is this something I need to worry about or not?
So unlock phone, then, what?
Thanks in advance.
Meant to put this in Q&A, sorry Mods.

You don't need to unlock the bootloader. just follow this thread that root it, install the Xrecovery(0.3) and flash donutHD 2.2.9 and you never have to worry about anything else. Or and unlocking the bootloader has nothing to do with sim unlocking to work on different network.
So tell me how it went and ask any questions.

Lol flashing is hard for this phone e compared to others. Half the time the kernels don't flash because there's only two files in it instead of a lot for the loader.bin. like the othernight I flashed a kernal and wifi was broke and the phone was stuck sideways. Its different and I understand I'm in the same boat. Took me almost 13 hours to get this thing to stay rooted and unlocked. Used superoneclick to root and everything said I was except the flashtool lol.

All kernels that I tested was flashed with no problems. the .bin files aren't problem. All kernels which I had worked as they should. Wifi was not broken, and if it was broken, theres an update package to fix this, or you can ask in thread whats the problem that wifi is not running. ...... well sry man but I havent got problems with rooting or flashing. I think this phone is the easy task not the hard one.

I agree with harviak.. I had only one issue till now n that was when I was a complete noob and hadn't followed the steps correctly. I got it workin myself after that. So don't get scared of customizing.
Btw if ur cousin is on a different network and ur x10a is locked to a certain network then the bootloader has ntn to do with what u need. U need to remove the simlock. Look for an appropriate guide here on xda
And if u feel interested in putting in a custom ROM unlock ur bootloader (look for a thread called flashtool and check out the guides there)

I wanted to install it, but in the baseband section my baseband was marked bad.So i didn't install it .Thanks for the help!
Like many others, I've followed the tutorial at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416190 but have ended-up with a loop.
In my case I cannot find the Samsung ROM for the Canadian version ( I5500MUGJJ7 ) as can be seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13958293&postcount=1 I'm not the only one.
End result is I've bricked my phone I think (but hoping NOT).
I don't think by following that tutorial I made a backup so I don't think I can restore - or CAN I?
Can anyone help me out - THNKS

You need to install your default original samsung rom that you have the first time you got the phone.Install it and it should work fine.I did that.

Thank you for replying.
That's the point, I don't have the original ROM. I was following the tutorial and had NOT realised I wasn't making a backup and I don't think the original author even realized the it would happen that the Canadian ROM would be one of the very few which couldn't be found if things got screwed-up.

First try to get on the tutorial, from this sequence:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416190
1.1 We need to install a boot-loader as the Samsung one is very limited and just plain awful! That said, it wasn’t intended to be used for anything other than the Samsung software so it’s not awful from their point of view but it’s pretty unfriendly to us.
To this
2.4 If you are new to use ClockworkMod recovery manager then before doing anything, please have a look at next screen to learn the navigation keys.
If this works, than we will talk what to do next.
Try different official rom, maybe it will work, you don't have anything to lose.

I don't think it's actually the ROM which is the problem but the "baseband". Twice I followed the tutorial and everything worked until it came time to restart the phone. At which time it went into the loop.
I have unlocked G5 and it is not Virgin Mobile - what now!
Thanks

Hmm try searching for a "fastboot" method, i really don't know what should be a problem, im not an expert in this :/.Ill try to help you tomorrow again .
Is there such a thing as a fastboot for the Galaxy 5 i5500
I'm getting a little mixed-up and feeling a bit MORE stupid - what's the difference between the ROM and the baseband. Can one copy ROM or baseband from a working phone onto another?

[Q] SGS2 4.2.2 and 4.2.1 CARRIER LOCKING ITSELF!!

Well i´ve got a GT-9100, aka, international SGS2. Well after flashing one of the latest nightlies of CM10.1, when I inserted my PIN code, it told me to enter my network unlock code, but my phone has been Carrier unlocked since a year ago, and unlocked by imei code. So I thought.. WTF? I started to look on the internets and i oung a post on the cyanogen forums I thing it was, were there were a lot of people complaining because their SGS2´s had been Carrier LOCKED by those nightlies. I recovered my carrier unlock by flashing a /EFS backup I had from a lot of time ago, but I cant use 4.2.2 or the latest 4.2.1 because it keeps king of reseting my EFS!! And even if I flash the good copy of my EFS, if im still on 4.2.2, it resets it on every reboot!!. I dont know if this is a problem with all the 4.2.2 roms, since Ive also tried AOKP JB MR1 Build 5 and 4, and still the same problem. So it might be a problem with the AOSP itself.
Anyone know a way to use 4.2.2 and not have this carrier lock problem??
Any ideas at all??
I can still use older versions such as older 4.2.1´s and my carrier is fine again. WTF
Make another EFS back up with 3rd party tools like hc ktool and / or galaxy s unlock.

Ive already got a EFS backup, whats happening is that with 4.2.2 versions, the unlocked SGS2´s are being carrier locked again. And even if you restore your good EFS on 4.2.2, after every reboot, it resets itself saying its carrier locked again.
I know you already have a back up, I suggested you do a couple of additional back ups with 3rd party apps.

But do you have an idea of why this is happening only with carrier locked sgs2 on 4.2.2?
ROM related or corrupted EFS folder, maybe both.

As far as I know, there's no magical solution for this (yet).

Ok, found the problem and solution for anybody having same problem.
It looks like my phone was only PARTIALLY unlocked, wich i dont know what it means, and on 4.2.2 roms, partially unlocked phones are relocked again dont know why :S. So just fully unlock your phone using some unlock app on the market.

A few questions about rooting/flashing

Hello everyone!
First of all I want to say that I am really a newbie when it comes to rooting/flashing so excuse me if those questions seem to be stupid, but I just want to make sure everything I'll do will be okay.
First of all...I have a galaxy s3 (GT-I9300) from Orange Romania. At the moment I am stuck on their network for 2 more months (when my warranty also expires and they are obliged to unlock my phone for free if I want to) but I want to root my phone as I want to try a few s5 roms and also CM.
At the moment I am on 4.3...and one thing I do not know for sure...is if my phone has knox or not. I read a bit snd I saw that some have it and some don't. If it helps anyone...my phone is about 2 years old.
I also read that sometimes people lose their imei when they modify their phone...and I didn't really understand why...so if anyone can help me with an answer...that would be great.
Basically...what I want to do...is to root my phone...install a custom recovery and install a dual boot mod...so I can boot one rom from my internal storage...and one from my sd card. (I read that it is possible to do such a thing)
My plan is to install let's say....blekota's s5 rom on my sd card...to see how it is and If I am pleased with it to install it as my daily driver (insted of this 4.3 version that i have now)...and then install CM on my sd card and keep them like this.
What i found searching through the forums is that those s5 ports work pretty well with boeffla kernel but what I saw is that for dualboot you need a certain kernel, is that right?
So one of my questions is...can I install for example blekota's s5 on my sd card and then somehow install boeffla kernel for this rom?
Also...what about the bootloader? I tried to read a little bit about it and if I should unlock it or not for those operations...but I am not sure.
Also..if I install those roms...will my network still work? I saw some guys saying that they had problems with they networks.
And finally, if I install a Rom...and everything works fine...even the network...and after those two months i go with my phone at the orange store...will they still unlock it for free as they are supposed to?
I hope someone will help me with those questions..and excuse me if they were answered before.
Have a great day!
Anyone?

Most ROMs come with the kernel included. Generally you can flash another kernel later in recovery. But you should check in that kernel's thread if it is compatible with the ROM you flashed. So you'd have to check the boeffla thread.

That, I don't know, as I don't know how a "provider lock" is achieved technically...
efs backup
I would just like to add some information to the useful answer's provided by @Hawaiihemd above and that is once you have it network unlocked and rooted you must firstly and most importantly backup your efs (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) . This wil help you considerably later on if you have problems with signal/network etc please look at the stickies/guides on how to do this. Also there is no knox on the galaxy s3 (GT-I9300) .
I want to thank both of you for your answers! I will search a bit about how to do a proper backup so I'll be sure I do it right.
What do you think i should do? Should I wait for them to unlock my phone so I can use other sims in it or should I root now? I am really tempted to root my phone as I really want to try those roms. Also...if any of you have any ideea which s5 rom I should try first...please...message me...as I do not want to turn this post into a "which rom is better" post.
If I choose to root my phone now...and the guys from orange won't accept to unlock it...is there another way to do so?
Have a nice day!

Hi,
Instead of trying to hack system files to get apps working, why not update your phone to the latest android version (4.1.2). You can do this via OTA or ODIN (look at guides on XDA).

thanks for the reply mate! I also tried installing cyanogenmod, but when I install it, my phone locks. I mean you need to open line it (again) cause it came from another country. And yea, I tried to restore it back, and It is locked. forever. But I have found this app called Galaxy S II unlock and it worked but my android version is back at 2.3
I have this question mate, If I install my phone to cyanogenmod again, will I lose the sim unlock? and If I install my phone to cyanogen mod again, can I do this process again?
the app is called Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz

Hi,
I can see you already posted in the thread for the unlock app. You probably won't get an answer there because the thread is pretty much dead. I'm not exactly sure if upgrading your ROM will return your phone back into a locked state, but I don't really see the risk in doing it. After all, you can always downgrade if something doesn't turn out right. AFAIK, there are other methods to unlock your device on newer android versions, they only work on stock ROMs and not custom ROMs, but I'll let you search for it on XDA

Hi,
Did you try using one of the unlock methods on stock 4.1.2? Maybe if the android versions are too new, the apps won't work. But if it's stock official ROM, it might work.
I noticed you haven't done so yet so I recommended you initially to do this.
