I'm coming from years of samsung and have jumped ship to the M8. I know the info I am looking for is in these threads, but they are scattered and I'm just wanting to be sure I am doing right....basically need the warm and fuzzy lol!!
Which order should I be doing the following and do I use the All in one toolkit?
1. Unlock bootloader
2. S-Off
3. Root
4. Custom recovery
The support in the M8 section is awesome and nothing like some of the Samsung sections.
Thanks in advance for your help.
The resources are scattered no more. You will find my Index thread in the General section:

Thank you very much for that thread, I'm glad to see we now have it. Would you mind giving your opinion on which order I should be doing my listed steps and which of the 2 toolkits I should use?
Thank in advance

1) Unlock bootloader
2) Install custom recovery
3) Root (or flash custom ROM, whichever your final goal may be)
4) S-off (not required to have root or flash ROMs, but recommended as long as you understand what S-off is)
I don't personally advocate the use of any toolkits, as mentioned in my Index thread.
Doing the steps manually is not difficult at all. Using a toolkit deprives you of a valuable learning experience. You learn how to use fastboot and adb, which are valuable skill to have if you ever run into problems in the future.
Using a toolkit teaches you nothing . . . except how to use a toolkit.

This guy literally walks you through each step.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuHFcGvUjwA&feature=youtu.be
I played a little with the toolkits and all they do is (basically) type in all the adb commands for you. Which can be nice if you want to be lazy, that's why I played with it. But if you s-off you will have to use the command line anyway, so you might as well just do it all from the command line. The index guide that redpoint73 made works perfectly.

How do I achieve s-off? Can I revese HTC unlock method? Is there a thread or answer available? I'm not a complete noob at rooting but got excited and didn't read thoroughly before committing to the HTC process. Started sifting through threads and haven't discovered an answer yet... Please help
I've been trying to sift through them as well just out of curiosity. Here is what I have gleaned from all of the threads on this subject:
1) Unless you previously had s-off through revolutionary, the HTC method will not give you or currently allow you to get s-off
2) Although the HTC method does unlock the boot loader, other things are still locked preventing you from flashing a custom recovery.
3) Currently there is no way to root or get super user access once you've applied the HTC method
4) Currently there is no way to undo the HTC method.
Probably not what you wanted to hear but that is my understanding as it is currently. That doesn't mean that a Dev won't figure out how to allow you to do those things in the next few days or weeks. You'll just have to keep checking.
Thank you, maybe ill just "lose" my phone and get it replaced
I would wait a week or so. Someone will probably figure it out.
Try this thread. Apparently this version of CWM recovery will work with the 1.50 hboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225812
I think if you search other threads you'll see that it only works if you have previously had s-off.

Wow...fraud...people like you are why we pay so damn much for insurance/phones.
Looks like you can install recovery and Roms. Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225974

There you go! That didn't take long at all. Now you don't have to "lose" your phone.
thank you
I really appreciate the info... I'll check it out tonight and let you all know how it goes. This is my absolute favorite forum bar none. By the way, I was being facetious when I made the statement about "losing" my phone... laugh every once in a while! I did when I basically noobed my own phone.
I want Nil's Business ICS 4.03 so bad. I have a stock 2.3.4 Rezound and feel like I'm in the stone age. His thread has 378 pages of comments, some contradict others. Do I just follow what is on the first couple pages and that's all there is to it? or do I have to again try to get through the entire thread in order to install this rom that I want? If it was allowed I would send Nil's $20 for an up to date, step by step instruction guide for him to email to me or something. I'm a semi-bright guy, but I have no idea where or how to even start upgrading my Rezound. Can someone please assist me with taking my first baby steps to upgrade to Nil's Business Sense. Any real help would be apprecated. Thank You

Always good to read the entire thread but as you mentioned there will be contradictions since versions evolve and fix some earlier problems.
If you read through the first 3 posts you should be good to go.
Make sure you know the state of your phone but the 3 most important things are: 1) Have you unlocked the bootloader and have a custom recovery like AmonRa, 2) are you S-ON or S-OFF and 3) what firmware are you on GB or ICS (You are now GB).
As long as you are unlocked bootloader the options to install for S-on/off and firmware are in the installer
Have fun
Thank you NilsP

Not that exciting. I just like to help.
Firstly, thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. It has started me on a great journey of playing with these devices, starting with the Nook Color last year. Now I have a Rezound (trying to S-Off), and a new Nexus 7.
I have unlocked the bootloader using the HTCdev tool. I'm unsure where to go from here. I have the Hasoon2000 s-off tool, but it seems I need to root the phone. I haven't found any instructions for getting me through the rooting part. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can advance?
Thank you very much,
MT

+1 sorry i dont really want to start another threat because im kind of the same situation. My phone is htcdev unlock s-on h-boot 2.10 (yeah i know)
Amonra-recovery custom Rom. I want to s-off but my question is. Im i good to go to s-off how my phone is right now or do I have to change H-boot? and if I do which would you recommend?
Go to:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Download the latest download for ARM. Devices. Flash via recovery and you will be rooted.
HTC Rezound
You need to flash a recovery and use it to flash Superuser or SuperSU. Hansoon2000 has a different all-in-one toolkit for the Rezound that can help you with all of that. It's linked under the sticky thread in Development. There's also other threads with manual instructions for the steps.
Thanks for your help, everyone. I was able to get things working correctly, and installed ViperRez 1.0.3. Very cool indeed!
Edit: I ended up going for the CM9 stock build instead. I really don't like Sense much, and much prefer the stock ICS interface.
I hope I posted this in the rigth section, if I didnt I appologize. So, I used to have an HTC Thunderbolt and yesterday I upgraded to the DNA and I love it. But I do have a few questions. See I want to root it, but I dont want to have to hassle with all the custom ROM stuff again. Plus all I really see a need for me is to have root access. So I did do some looking and came across these links

Im still a little new to the rooting scene and just want to make sure I know what im doing before I do it. So here are my questions.
1) If I root will I still be able to install the OTA updates that come on my phone?
2) Are the two links above both rooting methods, just different ways of doing it?
3) If yes to 2, is there a current "best" way to root the DNA?
4) If I decide to un-root, is there a way to do that? (im sure there is and a guide even)
I think that is all the questions I have for now. Thank you very much and keep up the great work here.

Follow the first link you posted because in order to unlock the bootloader you need the super CID hack then after you do the super CID hack go to the htcdev.com page and follow those instructions and then either flash a rooted rom or the Subusybox.zip to get root
To un-root simply lock the bootloader and run the RUU file

1) In short, no. To get the ota you'll have to install the stock recovery, and maybe relock, etc, etc. The easiest way is just to flash a rom based off the ota
2)Yes, but the second links to a thread which then in turn links to the first thread you in posted. Just use the first link you posted
3)See #2
4)ruu and fastboot oem lock, if your s off then its a little more complicated, but you will be able to be 100% stock as opposed to 99%

Thank you guys very much for that info. I greatly appreciate it. One last question for now. I have seen the term "S-off" a few times, what exactly is that?

It means that the Security Flags have been turned OFF (S-OFF) and it allows you to write unsigned.img's and do other stuff to parts of the device that with Security ON you wouldn't be able too such as writing to the boot partition while in recovery, flash radios to the radio partition
Hi. Just after a few answers really.. I've just recently upgraded from a Desire HD, which i rooted and ROM'd using the now non existent Advanced hack kit.. Now that was easy enough to do as it was one piece of kit that did everything, but i've done a little reading about rooting and ROM'ing the One Max and i'm a little daunted as it's a new phone and don't fancy bricking it at this stage and have heard various people saying there are a few ways to do it..
Now i know i have to visit HTCDEV and sign up to unlock the bootloader, which i've yet to do.. But i just need to know if there's a similar one stage program after unlocking the bootloader like the hack kit on the previous phone. If it's too involved i won't bother, but would be nice to know if there is one..
Any help would be appreciated.

You don't have to visit HTC Dev to unlock if your on Verizon. You can use rumrunner found in the Original Android Dev section to unlock, S-Off and root your device... If your not with Verizon, I believe you need to use HTC Dev and then you can use rummrunner or fire water also in Original Android Dev section.

Yeah i'm in the UK so no Verizon here...
So what you're saying is then, once i've unlocked the bootloader via HTCDEV, that i can use rumrunner to do the whole rooting thing in one program?? What about this, this seems to look similar to the advanced hack kit?

I'm in UK and used firewater to temp root. unlock and s-off. then after that installed custom recovery and then rooted through that. then custom rom'd. it is quite involved as you need HTC drivers working fastboot and adb etc I haven't heard of anyone using the tool you quoted since I've had phone so it's up to you. and the tool probably won't be just a one click. what are your details in hboot?

I didn't have luck with that toolkit, but give it a try. I know rummrunner works.
