What's the camera lens made of? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Does anyone know if the lens is gorilla glass 3 like the display? With the camera sticking out like it does I'm surprised they don't use sapphire crystal.

sapphire crystal, lmfao They don't need that crap. Its been argued that its not much better than Gorilla glass anyway, in many ways.. But it is more expensive !
The lens in the back in made of glass, the same stuff your windshield is made of.
Not gorilla

no, not gorilla. Get from the post that discuss the broken camera lens that the camera lens is made of normal glass and easy to be broken. It's never a secret that S5 camera design is a flaw. The camera lens even can self crack.

Gorilla Glass would work fine, wouldn't it? I doubt Samsung would use Sapphire Crystal for the camera. If they did, it'd be noted a lot more.

Camera protector?

Do anyone use a plastic camera protector?
The screen it is made of gorilla glass, difficult to scratch, and even with that a lot of people uses film protectors, but the camera? It is a plastic and easily scratchable, so, anyone have tried to use a protector?
And do that add some kind of blurryness to the photos?
Im not completely sure about this but wouldnt putting a protector over the lens cover distort the image?

You can buy MartinFields screen protector...they all come with little bits for camera and flash also...and they are way better than any other screen protectors on the market...I have been using them for years on all my phones and tablet.

I thought the camera was the same glass used on the front. It certainly doesn't feel like plastic comparing my SGS2 with my Desire.

[Q] HTC EVO 3d have gorilla glass

I was wondering if i really need to keep my screen protecter on or is the screen hard glass thanks
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Yes, it does have gorilla glass and the screen protector is just personal preference, I have one just in case...
As far as it says on the gorilla glass website our phone has gorilla glass but I would highly recommend you keeping your screen protector. I already scrached another 3d

Based on what I've seen, I believe the Evo 3D is listed on the Gorilla Glass website because the glass covering the camera is Gorilla Glass. It's my belief that the glass covering the cameras is GG and the glass on the front is not. I can't prove it but I bet if we looked into it, that's what we'd find.

Have you had any success getting a phone replaced for a screen scratch? I would think they would put that squarely into the "your fault " category...

I'm sorry were you under the misconception that the insurance only covers loss or something? Your fault category is precisely what insurance is for slick.
Mechanical or electrical failure, routine maintenance, and failure from normal wear and tear. File your replacement request within 60 days of incident.
Loss, theft, physical or liquid damage and resulting corrosion, and fire or lightning damage. File your replacement request within 60 days of incident.
The screen scratches just as easy as any phone. I had ny EVO screen scratch on me from my earrings. Forgot I had them on while talking on the phone and scratched my screen to all hell. Safe to say doesn't sound like gg to me.

I actually emailed HTC on this question a few weeks ago..the rep told me that neither the front screen or the back camera cover were gorilla glass..he said that they have used a glass that is comparable or better than gorilla glass.but on the corning site it shows as having gorilla glass
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/htc
No offense but most everyone knows that the reps aren't exactly the most knowledgeable of people.
If it's listed on Corning's site it must be true, they can't really lie about where their product is and isn't being used, it's bad business.
Also my phone's glass is pretty damn strong, I've dropped it on a metal seat belt and I don't have anything to show for.

Its been officially stated that the screen is GG and the camera lens protector is just plastic (albeit a strong plastic).
I dont bother with screen protectors. My Evo 4G (not GG) never had a protector for a little over a year and never had an issue. If you treat your stuff right, it should stand upto any "normal" abuse. Of course its preference.
Yeah, everyone sweats over whether it has Gorilla Glass or not, it's still just glass. Every phone now has hardened glass, they all don't scratch from metal, and they all scratch from the same sand and what not. Who cares if it's officially Gorilla Glass or not?
FYI:
EVO 4G x2. Evo# 1 never got a scratch. Evo #2 (Wifes Evo) scratched......insurance replaced without a deductible (I have no idea how that happened...lol).
EVO 3D's NAKID as well...and will be....for me screen protectors just make the touch screen feel crappy......

Most metal is harder than any kind of glass (Except maybe gold). Specially if you have any kind of gemstone in your earrings. Gorilla glass != Indestructible.
For what it is worth:
I dropped a small hardened steel drill bit from 8 inches and it chipped my screen. (this was by accident as I had it under my work station). The chip immediately turned into a crack the moment I touched the phone. I bought a replacement digitizer to replace myself...
The outcome: The outer glass/digitizer is 1.40mm/0.055in thick. It is fairly tangible. Replacing the digitizer is a b---h, and I mean that as the LCD and digitizer cannot be accessed easily, if at all, from inside the phone.
And, my new screen got a tiny scratch from a razor blade on my work desk. I do not think this is a specialty glass. I would advise caution and possibly a case & screen protector...
i dont know about you guys but my Evo3D has DIAMOND GLASS !!! I have a pure diamond screen. **** gorilla glass !!!!
There are so many reports of broken and scratched Evo 3D screens already, why take the chance. Just search the forums, you'll find a several gouged and shattered screens here. Phone insurance doesn't cover cosmetic issues (like scratched glass), only functional issues.
Taking care of the phone helps, but accidents happen. I had 4 Evo 4G's, 3 were mint, 1 had a scratched screen, they all had screen protectors and cases from the time they came out of the box.

I us the ZAGG screen protector its like stab proof and whatnot. I love it. Been using it since my first smartphone. They can get somewhat pricey depending where you buy them i usually buy them at radio shack and have them put it on for me. I asked an actual zagg person if they have any for the camera and they said no something along the lines of the flash reflecting off the plastic and into the camera. its believable..
If you think you are even remotely likely to drop your phone or accidentally have something rub up against it I would recommend you just get one. I have a ZAGG and it is great so far. I figure if you are going to be carrying around something so expensive that you may as well have it protected.
Screen protectors are relatively cheap. I've read enough stories of even GG phones getting scratched in pockets, that I prefer to be safe than have to fork out for a new screen or deal with scratches, Gorilla-glass or not.
I have a Clear-Coat on both mine and my wife's E3Ds. Works great, reduces fingerprints and smudges, and you don't even notice it's there.
What about those dual cameras on the back.....is there a scratchguard available for the back....

Gorilla glass is the screen glass itself. It's not a screen protector. Sure, it's possible, if you want, you can order the glass yourself, measure it to fit your X10 and take out the stock glass, and replace it.
But it'd be hard to do that, and I don't know how much a Gorilla glass costs.
Thnx for explanation friend. Gonna email to Corning asking that.. i´m fan of SE but no Handset with Gorilla Glass T__T ..
Cheers.

SE Stock protector is not good as the GG screen.
Cheers.
I don't think Sony will release a Xperia Handset with Gorilla-Glas...
As far as I know only Motorola uses Gorilla-Glas.

The mineral glass that the x10 screen is made of is very strong.

Gorilla glass is good, but in the end just another marketing ploy

Sorry, getting gorilla glass through Corning is going to be cost prohibitive.
I've tried to order custom sized pieces (just plastic for something unrelated) and there are a few things working against you.
Corning will not do a one-off order. They themselves will require probably a minimum 10,000 pieces.
Corning will need to design the piece, this upfront cost will be included in your first order. And they'll probably need at least 1 donor X10... probably multiple.
There are a few companies that make glass similar to gorilla glass - but you're probably still going to have to order it in bulk. And then let's hope that they got the measurements right the first time.
Unless if a company thinks they can make money selling gorilla glass panels to users off ebay... your only choice is really to buy a new phone that comes with gorilla glass.

you didn't remove the original screen protector though, the scratches aren't on the actual screen.
I took it off and had it off for like a year and didn't get a single even scuff.
The gorilla glass screen I have now scratched much easier.

I think you still don't understand. Gorilla Glass is the GLASS itself. Screen protector is something else. If you have bought one, peel it off, and you'll see that there's already a screen protector. And if you peel it one more time, there wont be screen protector anymore. And that's the screen.

But a simple answer to my question is NO, it doesnt exist. Well im looking for a good screen protector some ppl use Amzer or EZguard. If someone knows any Screen protector better than those plz recommend.

Camera cover is plastic ;-(

Be careful cleaning the back camera lens. It scratches very easily. I had some sticky spots on my lens and used my finger nail to remove it and I scratched my lens. Really? They couldn't choose a softer/cheaper material? Please no lectures that I used a finger nail. If it would have been glass it shouldn't have been a problem.
Going for a raised case now, mines scratched up as well. It's pretty minimal, doesn't seem to affect quality at all so that's good

I saw an article where a person scratched a DSLR lens and it took shots just as clear as the new lens, They are close enough to the sensor and stuff that the scratch had no impact on the image. You have to REALLY scratch it or scratch REALLY deep for it to show up.
I feel your pain, I paid £62 for a n new unibody because the repair centre scratched my lense and couldn't prove it was done by them, so I get my phone back and the lense is kind of misty but no scratches, I think is an anti glare coating that actually gets scratched, if you look at the lense cover in daylight you will see it doesn't look very glossy, im sure its glass(could be wrong) its just that damn coating, it should be on the inside unless it on both because they were dipped to apply it.The onex is glass but theres no coating on it, its just plain glass.

It probably doesn't matter. It scratches very easily and the protruding camera doesn't make it better So far I don't see a difference in photo quality.
It's definitely glass. I've been scratching it with my nail all day, no marks.

Quartz will scratch glass no matter how many gorillas it's made of. Sand is basically quartz. So if you have a speck of sand/dirt under your fingernail or in the ridges of your finger, you can potentially scratch pretty much anything up.

Whats being scratched is an anti glare coating, there isn't one on the onex, its just clear glass, if you put both phones together the onex+ as a purply coating, this is very easy to rub of and scratch.
I think it is replaceable. I have a back cover you can have if you want to try pulling it off and replacing it.

Why would HTC give the onex glass and the newer updated version(onex+) plastic, doesn't make sense, I myself am not going to attempt to prove whether its glass or plastic, I still think its glass though.
