Benn lurking here for a few days trying to soak in all the info I can until I get my G-Tab from the last woot-off in. Let me start out by saying that the community that has grown around this tablet is great. Lots of good info and work being done to push the G-tab to its potential. Thanks to the Devs and everyone else who contributes.
So my question is this ...... After doing some research I plan to install Vegan 5.1 on my G-Tab when it arrives. I will be sharing the tab with my wife who is a photographer. She said the main feature she wants is to be able to use the tablet to proof her photographs with her clients after a photo shoot. Meaning she will be taking the SD card out of the camera and using a USB memory card reader to access the SD card on the G-Tab. Will this be possible to do on the G-Tab? Is there an app or software that would be better for viewing pictures off of an SD card?
From what I've read so far there seems to be a problem with the tablet not recognizing sdcard2 right? or is there a workaround or fix for this?
Please let me know any suggestions you guys have on how she will have to go about viewing the pictures off of an SD card. I am open to installing different ROMS than Vegan if I have too.
Thanks in advance.
I think there may be some more experienced replies than mine, my experience with the g-tab is still new, however an approach that should work would be to use a mini-sd card in a sleeve, in her camera, then take out the mini-sd and pop that into the g-tab slot. Then you can use the file brower/manager app on the g-tab and browse the mini sd; should be able to just tab an image and show.
Thanks for the reply Riccarr. That sounds like an option but dont want to have to buy all new micro cards unless that is the only option. But I will keep that in mind.
Does anyone else know if its a problem reading jpegs off an sd card through the usb port using a usb card reader? Please share your experiences on viewing pics from a card and if there are any problems I should be ready for. Thanks
I've heard that you can run an SD Card reader off the USB port, in VEGAn 5.11 at least. I've not tried it myself, although I can let you know later tonight as I'm about to head out and buy one.
GoPro HD camera takes an SD card, and I want to be able to view my trackday runs on the tablet while at the track. In glorious HD.
First off I would suggest installing VEGAn-TAB 7.0 instead of earlier Beta version. That's mainly because it is working so well for me. I've had no problems loading .jpg files (of photographs) as well as video files on both the external 16gb micro SD Card and 8gb USB Flash Drive. I've also been able to copy files back and forth between the internal and external SD drives. The USB Flash Drive can be used to copy files to the internal SD drive or to simply use as a second drive to play videos or display photograhs (.jpg files). To copy and paste a file from a drive to go to another drive, simply press and hold the file to be copied and a menu is displayed. Select copy. Then go to the drive and folder you want to paste the file. From the copy/paste notification (press the icon displayed at bottom center) select the file or folder to be pasted. The paste process can be displayed via the notifications window (from the icons on the lower left of the window, press the icon furthest to the right). Curiously enough, the safest place to store and view either videos or .jpg files seems to be the USB Flash Drive. The internal and external SD cards work fine as well, but there does seem to be a problem at times with these files simply disappearing. Good luck.

VEGAn 7.0 RC does work well, and it's arguably the prettiest ROM out there. I've only not gone to it due to the lack of hardware acceleration for video decoding, I'm worried it would result in poor HD playback.
Ok, now on to the card reader. I bought a cheap-o USB reader from Office Depot for $12.99. I'm currently streaming "I am Murloc" from a 2GB Kingston SD card.
Note: The card had to be reformatted in FAT32 for it to work. NTFS will supposedly work for VEGAn as well, but I've not tested if my camera can read either. FAT32 should be safe.
Edit: Spoke too soon. It's working fine as long as I don't put it in the camera. Once it's been in the camera, I can't access it anymore. Not sure why...
Edit 2: Er... ok, now it's working again. Apparently there needs to be something in the root folder for it to pick it up, another folder doesn't work? Will have to test more.
Did anyone experienced this annoying problem ?
I got twice almost all video files deleted from my microsd card, why ??
Nope! Not had a single problem...
1, what kind of SD card are you using, (Brand, speed)
2, how are you transferring the files to the Flyer.
3, what apps do you have on your Flyer...
Any of the above three may contribute to your problem so a little more info may get some answers...
I used a Microsd HC 32gb Transcend, but I can say that I had a problem like that even with a 16Gb TDK.
I use AndroExplore to surf the folders and I use vPlayer to watch movies.
Essentially I have only avi and mkv files on the card.
I transferred these files connecting flyer to my pc.
The very strange thing is that I have a root directory, and subdir named film, and under this one I've got something like 15 subdir with all the movies.
After the disaster I found all the directories with some of them completely empty and some other with 1 of two files, and the others completely safe.
Very very strange, and I'm really afraid to discover this situation when I will be in vacation next week. This should be a nightmare for me !!!
First thing you want to do is check your microsd for errors. Either remove it, stick it in your computer and run chkdsk /x on it, or hook the flyer up via usb cable, wait for the microsd to mount and run chkdsk /x on it. Then you want to back up the microsd to your computer. With the flyer hooked up via usb, simply drag the ext_sd folder to your hard drive. Microsd card reliability isn't quite there yet; that's why I have my eye on tablets that can take full-size SD cards.

I thank you, but don't you think that it can be caused by a wrong software action ?
I tried several video players, maybe one of them...

i thought I'm getting crazy, but looks like is real...it happened to me couple weeks ago; some video file was missing, and that time I just ignored....so it happened...
I have a microSD 16GB sandisk class 2.......from long time ago. I think is time for renew...
I don't think it can be only a micro sd problem. When a memory card fail the file remain often incomplete on the memory card. In this case they simply disappear all together. Not one, not a directory...it sounds more about a software bug, in a program like Androexplorer or a video player which scan the sd before showing the list. Is it possible to have a bug like this ??
and what about advanced task killer pro ? I keep it always in memory, but sometimes maybe it is dangerous to use for the temp memory, isn't it ?
Does anybody know if I can set readonly all the files to avoid this problem ?
Do you think it can be a good trick ?
I know this is an old thread but I experienced this same problem just now. OP and I could have a common app that did this by accident (bug).
I have a Sero 7 Pro that has a 32GB micro SD card. I would like to take it with me to the deer lease so I can back up all my trail cam pics to the 32GB card. So I got a micro USB to female USB adapter. Plugged a 16GB SD card into a card reader and plugged it into my adapter. The Sero 7 will not see the memory card at all. I have tried all the free usb mount apps and usb mass storage apps on Google play. I even rooted (thanks to this great forum) my tablet last night and it still won’t see the memory card or my Verbatim flash drive (all formatted as FAT32). Is there something I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I haven't been able to mount any external USB drive. The only work-around that I've found is to use Nexus Media Importer from the store. It doesn't mount the drive per se but it does let you copy files back and forth. It's not free, but reasonable (about $4 if memory serves).

Thanks the free version was able to show the pics. So I downloaded the full version and its failing license check.
I'm afraid I can't help there. It worked fine on mine. You might want to uninstall and then re-install. If it still fails, I would contact the developer.

Thanks, it started working after a few hours. Do you know how to change the saved destination folder? Its saving the pics to my internal memory. Only having 5GB left it will not hold all my pics. I want it to save them to my micro sd card.
In the settings there is an option to let you select directories. If you then use the "advanced" tab, you get a file manager that lets you select both the source and destination directories. I don't know if it remembers them from one time to the next, though.
I have suddenly found myself unable to copy in files via USB cable from my laptop to my tablet (ASUS MeMO Pad 10 ME-102A-A1 Android 4.2.2). As recently as 2 weeks ago I had no problem doing so but now, immediately after the copy operation starts, I get an error message on the laptop that the tablet is not accepting data or some such. I used to be able to push files from my Windows Laptop (using plain old
windows Explorer) to my tablet easily. I download public domain books and publications to my laptop and then push them into the tablet to read when I am away from civilization (I go camping and basically hermit for days at a time). I've got several books plus the contents of old music CDs ripped on my laptop that I'd like to put on the tablet.
I tried just plugging the SD card into my laptop (which would be faster) but Windows swears the media is write protected.
I tried looking for any settings for USB but cannot find anything.
Help? Please?

After doing multiple searches, it seems there have been a few discussions about phone-chromebook USB connectivity but no real solutions. I recently got a chromebook and now that it is my primary, and only, computing device I am interested in exploring it's full capabilities. I will describe the specifics of my situation but I am hoping this thread will provide a useful resource to discuss all chromebook to phone USB connectivity issues.
Background:
I recently (within past 4 days) replaced both my phone and laptop. My previous setup was an HP laptop with windows 7 and the Sprint SGS4 (rooted with Sacs23 rom on JB 4.3). I am now using the Toshiba Chromebook 2 (stock) and Verizon SGS6 (stock lollipop and unrooted).
Needless to say I am experiencing some serious adjustment / withdrawl issues. I have used a chrome browser for years but there is still a learning curve to a chromebook coming from windows.
Before getting rid of my SGS4 I made backups (TB pro to external SD and dropbox, as well as with Helium backup).
My primary goal is to restore my previous apps and settings. (the Samsung Smart transfer in the store was a bust).
Problems:
Here are the issues I have run into (using the USB quick charging cable that came with the SGS6):
-Phone is not recognized / seen at all using the USB3 port.
-Phone is visible in files app using the USB2 port, but I get constant pop-ups “whoa there, be careful.” The chomebook appears to be constantly disconnecting from the phone.
-Neither the Helium app on my phone or in the Helium Chrome app recognize that the devices are connected.
- I installed the clockworkmod ABDchrome extension/app but it does not recognize that the phone is connected.
-The files app can see the files on the phone. It appears to be able to copy from the phone but not write to it (options for creating new folder are greyed out)
It seems some of my difficulties may be related to my specific phone setup (Lollipop on Verizon). I have seen prior suggestions to use the “three dots” on the storage screen to select USB transfer mode (I don’t have the three dots on Verizon touch wiz). Another possible solution was to select the USB transfer mode (PTP/MTP) on the popup notification when the devices are connected (Unfortunately, again, I don’t seem to get any popup notifications on my particular setup).
Again, my ultimate goal is to restore my phone apps / settings from my old phone, but I am interested to see if this is possible using the native(ish) capabilities of the chromebook (it may not be possible). I would be interested in any thoughts / suggestions for accomplishing this using the following:
Stock chromebook (i.e. Not installing Linux)
USB connection (i.e. not using Airdroid)
Stock lollipop
SGS6 (unrooted)
If there is no workable solution then would it be possible with a rooted phone? (it appears a root solution for the verizon SGS6 recently became an option)
I appreciate any input!
It's the laptop.
The issue isn't with the GS6, rather it's the Chromebook. It's not just the Toshiba Chomebook, it's just that ChromeOS wasn't built to do phone sync and read/write through USB. This is with every Chromebook in existence. Linux should take care of that for you though. Good day.
Update:
- I went ahead and rooted my phone. I can't live without root
- I learned that the SGS6 does not support USB 3 which explains why it wasn't recognized.
- Noob Lollipop alert. I learned that there was a notification item in the pull down shade to select the USB transfer mode. (I was expecting a pop up alert and never looked in the notifications shade).
Chrome beta channel has an enhancement that will allow photos to be transferred via the PTP and MTP protocols. Go to chrome://flags and find the flag Enable MTP support and enable it, and reboot the computer. Unfortunately, this still didn't work for me. I was still unable to write to the phone (i.e. I could only read and the phone contents but could not make a folder, write to the phone, or transfer files.)
Finally I tried just copying the SD card files to dropbox via chromebook. However, the size of the transfer is several gigabytes and it repeatedly fails part way through. I cannot seem to find a chrome app which provides folder comparison so I have no way of knowing which files transferred. If I restart the transfer there are no options to skip files that already exist. Instead it just starts over again and creates duplicates of the files already transferred.
Still looking for solutions:
- a way for the chromebook to write via USB to an external device (SGS6) possibly by getting chrome MTP support
- A folder comparison webapp that allows the ability to unselect files which are identical. Ideally the webapp would also be able to search the external device to identify duplicate files as well.
The simplest way I can think of to do what you want would be to use an external sd card. As far as I know, you should be able to transfer anything on to that, and from there to the cb. Other than that, you need to disable both your hardware and software verification security settings on it, which is not for the faint of heart at all.
Chrome OS and file transfering.

As it stands with the latest ChromeOS update you can transfer files from your phone to the chromebook. ChromeOS however is unable to write files to the phone. You can do as another poster suggested and use an sd card. (if your phone supports an sdcard)
Chrome has come a long way and maybe sometime in the near future it'll have support to write files to phones.

Right. As I stated in my original post, I can see the files on my phone but I cannot write to the phone. My goal was to get my Titanium Backup files from my old phone to my new phone. The new phone (SGS6) does not have SD card slot so the easy solution is off the table. I eventually found a work around and used the app AirDroid to do a Wi-Fi transfer from the Chromebook SD card to my new phone.
In general, I have settled in to using my chomebook. It is fine for day to day tasks, but it has limitations which can be frustrating - like not being able to write to an external device. On the surface, this seems like an simple and unnecessary oversight. The chromebook could really use a more robust (copy, find duplicates, compare files) file management service/app which would seamlessly work with the sdcard, usb connected devices, and multiple cloud storage locations.

I will have to check out Airdrop. Is that an android app or is it on chrome also? That something I'm interested in. How exactly do you use it on Chrome?
It is an Android app which sets up a direct Wi-Fi link to the chromebook. There are probably others that do the same including file management apps (es file explorer )
