I'm rather a noob with Android and could use some help as I've only had my Verizon Galaxy S4 64GB since February. I'll try and provide as much information as I can so that I can get the proper help.
The problem I am having is that my internal memory is not calculating correctly. Instead of saying 64GB (minus GB for stock ROM size) it calculates to 32.00GB evenly. The phone was previously rooted via this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
I am not sure what I might have done to cause the incorrect storage amount so I'll mention some steps I took that could have been the underlying culprit to the problem.
While my phone was rooted I experienced problems with certain apps that were installed on the phone not being able to update due to the "insufficient storage" error. When this happened I would uninstall the app and re-install it which sometimes worked and other times the storage error continued and I would reinstall the app and all of its data via Titanium Backup.
After getting sick and tired with the "insufficient storage" error I tried clearing the cache for these apps both in application manager and also wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. When that didn't work I tried using the "wipe data/factory reset" option thinking that I could just re-install all my apps fresh and clean,...hopefully without the "insufficient storage" error.
In hindsight, that may not have been the best way to solve the problem. It was after doing all these steps that I first noticed my internal memory now read 32.00GB instead of a higher amount closer to 64GB.
Searching the web and these forums yielded no results to solving the problem,...only a few threads about SD card sizes not calculating correctly. (In case it matters, my SD card's total space is calculating correctly at 7.40GB available on a 8GB card.)
Then the KitKat update from Verizon came out and I decided to install it in hopes of it fixing the problem. In order to upgrade from Android 4.3 to Android 4.4.2 I had to unroot the phone because the upgrade wouldn't work on the phone when rooted. I unrooted using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
I had trouble doing the No-Wipe method (2 failed attempts) and had to use the Full Wipe method. My SCH-I545 runs on VRUEMK2 and I was very careful in choosing the correct files (well, as certain as I can be). It successfully unrooted. However, the Full Wipe method did not help fix the internal memory problem once the phone was restored to its stock setting.
I installed Android 4.4.2 successfully but, again, the internal memory is not showing the right amount.
So,...can any of you wise and benevolent gurus help or have any ideas? It would be much appreciated.
My phone reads as follows:
Baseband version: I545VRUFNC5 (I noticed this is not VRUEMK2 as before. Is this due to the KitKat upgrade?)
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build Number: KOT49H.I545VRUFNC5
Thanks in advance for your help. Let me know if you need any more information I might have missed.

Hi, decaturbob! I purchased the 64GB through my local Verizon Wireless store. They had to send away for it but they did have it. I don't know if it is something that is newly offered or by request but I did buy it quite recently (middle of February, 2014). I promise that the Total Space did read higher than 32.00GB before (and, yes, I know the difference between the internal memory and the SD card memory, in case anyone wonders). I just want to recover that space since I paid extra for it.
Decaturbob is right. There is no version on Verizon that has 64Gb of storage. They only have 16 and 32. My guess is that You have a 32gb s4 and an extra sd card installed which caused you to think you had higher than 32gb internal storage.

OK, I am not saying that isn't possible because I want to be open to all possibilities (including the notion that I really don't know what the hell I am talking about).
But if what you say is true, then why do I not see this extra SD card slot in the Storage menu? (My SD card currently reads 7.40GB available which is correct.) And why was my Total Space showing more than 32GB when I first bought the phone? Perhaps this hypothetical extra SD card was linked to the internal memory so they showed up as 64GB combined? If so, then I want that back! I can always go back to the guy who sold it to me, I guess, and see about replacing it,...although it WAS rooted and that may pose a problem even after I returned to the stock ROM, unrooted.
Or, let's put it this way,...if this was a 32GB phone that incorrectly calculated only 16GB of internal memory what would you advise that person to do?

Thanks, decaturbob. I installed diskusage and it showed 24747MiB for Storage Card and 7577MiB for /storage/extSdCard. No other cards were detected (as I didn't think there would be). Well, I am willing to accept that my phone is really a 32GB phone and not a 64GB as I have believed since purchase. Only one thing bothers me,...why did it read over 32GB when I first purchased the phone? Seriously, that was the first thing I checked when I got the phone was the storage capacity because that is what I wanted - 64GB. It makes no sense. And I don't do drugs. Really! I was very explicit about what I wanted with the Verizon rep and I paid an extra $200 over the 32GB model for it as I understood at the time. I just don't get it. I plan on taking it to Verizon after work and finding out exactly what the hell I payed for and received.
Thanks anyways to those of you willing to help. If anything you either got a good laugh out of this or, like me, will wake up screaming in the night over it. I suspect the first is more likely with you guys.

Take a look at your receipt...The 32gb s4 was a bunch more
sent by safestrap enabled bajarom
Not sure if this will work, but from an adb shell, do "su", then "cat /proc/partitions" and see what size mmcblk0 is reported to be. On my 16GB unit, it's 15388672 (1024 byte blocks = a bit less than 16 GB).
There's a VERY remote possibility that you flashed a 32 GB partition table (PIT) onto your phone, causing it to lose half the storage.
Why I say "very" is because Verizon never sold a 64 GB SCH-i545 to my knowledge, just 16 and 32 GB models.
And I think you would have remembered using ODIN to flash a new PIT file. Rooting alone didn't do this.
Any way that you could check the serial number to find out if it was a 64Gb?

I took the phone back to Verizon Wireless. It is a 32GB phone according to the serial number. They said that they keep stock of both 16 and 32GB phones and that the sales rep who took three days and supposedly ordered the 64GB model for me was fired a few weeks back for rooting (or offering to root) customer phones on the side. I don't really know what is up with the whole thing but they did give me $300+ back that I was apparently overcharged. Whatever. I'll just buy a 32 or 64GB SD Card for the extra memory I wanted. Not the way I wanted to do it but,...oh well.
Thanks to all who gave ideas, suggestions and other input.

I bought a no name 64GB Class 10 MicroSD card to replace my 32GB but I can't seem to get my data transferred over cleanly. I've formatted it numerous times (exFAT) both on my PC and my GNote. I have the 32GB card backed up to my PC. I've tried copying from my phone (32GB) to the PC (64GB) and vice versa. Sometimes it will go all the way through without a problem but always only some of the files and folders are copied correctly. Other times, it will throw one of several different errors and the stuff that looked had been copied will vanish. For example, this morning I was copying certain files, essentially one by one and checking in ES File manager to see if they were on the phone's external SD card (64GB) and they were. Then after doing this for a bout an hour it would hiccup and everything I'd copied over and verified with ES File Manager would be gone!?
If it matters, I'm running Windows 8 PC with 4GB ram and 1.31 TB of HD storage. On my Gnote i've tried it with both a stock ICS TW ROM and JellyBeer 4.1.0 with no joy. I've done a bunch of searches here and on Google but nothing seems on point. If it's a bad SD Card, how do I test for that?
When I had a weird problem like that it turned out the SD card was fake. This program determines your actual SD card size.
http://fightflashfraud.wordpress.co...ld-standard-in-detecting-fake-capacity-flash/
Other then that, fat32 is what you should use in Android. Maybe even try letting the phone format the card through settings/ storage. Be advised there will be data loss so backup anything beforehand.

The validator is certainly in my toolbox now. Thanx again. It takes forever to run on the large capacity drive but it was definitely worth. The white lettering is beginning to smudge. Really low class work. I'm getting my money back . . . I think. I think the poor schlub who sold it to me bought and is selling a bunch of them. I think he now knows how exposed he is.
Ok, after buying a cheap and corrupted 64gb micro sd card, I went and spent the money on a 64gb sandisk card. It works just fine. Now, I am rooted and have synergy rom build 104 which is also running fine. I noticed before I flashed the rom that cwm wouldn't recognize my external sd card. I read up on that and found that cwm won't read cards formatted to exfat. So, I formatted the card to fat32 and remounted, transferred all my music back onto the card. Everything worked just fine until I plugged my phone into my computer. I was able to open and navigate through the files like normal, except when I went to open the music folder where all my mp3s were. I tried this on 2 different computers and on both the computer froze with the sand timer. The phone itself was fine, my music player(poweramp) was and is able to play the files with no issue. Also, when I unmounted the card and put it into a card reader and then connected the card reader to my computer and voila! Everything was fine, I was able to open the music folder and scan through the music files. I am not sure what the issue is. Can anyone shed some light as to whether this is a phone/rom issue, a micro sd card issue, an mp3 issue? Any ideas would be appreciated.
That sounds like a bad sd card. Have you ran a checkdisk on it?

Hm, been searching around for this exact issue. Coworkers S4 with this exact SD card has been getting the removed unexpectedly error. Reformatted a few times, restarted phone, error comes back. It's in my Note 2 at the moment for troubleshooting, and so far so good, but this makes me move more toward an actual SD card issue in combination with the s4, and not the phone itself.

I called them and they are going to exchange it out for me. The weird thing is that I didn't get any damaged card error messages on the phone itself. It mounted it as soon as I popped it in. Even after formatting to fat32, it mounted right away with no issues. It only happened a couple days after I transferred all my music onto it. Is the free replacement they give you a newer card or newer model number?
+1 to the above. SanDisk told me they have a new version of the 64gig card with updated firmware, specifically for the S4. Package tracking shows mine is to be delivered on Monday.

So when this card tanks, I have to drop the big money on a card specifically made for this phone. Is this a problem with existing cards or did Samsung do something that required this firmware change?

They told me that too. My guess is it's due to the mass recall of the chips for the S3/S4. They said it's not present in Tablets so my 64GB in my tablet would be fine.
+1 problem with Sandisk 64Gb UH-1 card. Unexpected removal error. I am writing just for statistics. Just got my new Verizon S4 - and have problems...
FYI - I'm having a similar issue with a Samsung 64GD card. Got it to see the music for a while yesterday but after a reboot it can no longer see it.
Update, I received my new card and just popped it in. My phone automatically formatted it to exFAT. I'm not going to try changing it to FAT32, but is there any version or way I can get cwm to recognize the card in exFAT format? I tried TWRP, but when I flashed a rom it soft bricked the phone so I would like to stick with cwm.
Hey all, I tried looking this up already but I couldn't find what I wanted. I've nearly used up all of my phone's 9 or so gigabytes, and now I'd like to know the best way to get more room. I've deleted a decent amount of bloatware, but my misc. files still hovers at about 6.4. I've also thought of getting an sd card, but I looked it up and it seems like many people have problems with those on this phone. I'm not really sure what the best way to go about this is, so I'd appreciate any help.
Flash the Google edition ROM. Or you can get a micro SD card. Maybe use Google drive?
If you're in your return window, return it and get the 32GB version.

Buying an external SD card is definitely the answer.
I bought a 64GB SD from Sandisk, I was having problems just like everyone else. The card would unexpectedly unmount every few minutes, so I couldn't listen to music without being interrupted. However, Sandisk is fully aware of the problems its cards are having with Samsung phones. I contacted them, they sent me a new card with an "updated firmware". I have had the card for nearly a month now, and haven't had any issues with it. They have solved the problem.
So if you buy a card that has come right out of the factory, you, too, should have zero issues. If you buy one that is a little old, you can contact them and they'll send you a new one that WILL work.
You have very few options without a SD card. 9 GB of storage is far too little, and cloud storage is just messy. You shouldn't have to rely on mobile networks to have access to your data.
Hit thanks if I helped you, and good luck if you decide to buy an SD card.
I wish I would've waited until they released the 32 gb version, but I'm well past the return date. I've deleted most bloatware I don't want, but I still would like to keep some of it, so I can't flash the google edition rom. I'd rather just delete it myself, but I'm using root explorer and I heard that causes problems. I'll probably just get an sd card and update my phone. I don't know how seeing as I've rooted it, but I can worry about that later!
I still don't get how there can be so much bloatware. I know there's the OS, but that can't be more than 4. Most of the bloat apps aren't even that big. Anyways, thanks for the help.

Your misc files should not change if you delete bloat. If it did decrease in size, that would be a major cause for concern, as those don't represent the bloat you deleted. Debloating really isn't going to gain you any usable space because the apps that you are deleting reside on the system partition. Bloated or not, that partition is going to remain the exact same size regardless. Deleting apps from it does not make that space available to user apps or storage- it remains available only to /system.

No, you won't have to update your phone. Your phone wasn't causing the problem. When I said they "updated the firmware" I was talking about the SD card. If you get a Sandisk card straight out of the factory now, it should work with your S4 regardless of your root status or your custom rom.
So to be perfectly clear, Samsung didn't update its firmware, Sandisk did.
If your SD card doesn't work, simply contact Sandisk and they'll send you one that works. Simple as that. You WILL NOT have to change ANYTHING with your phone.

I know little about how moving apps to sd cards works, but I was saying that because I rooted before the new update so I'll need to update to move apps unless apps2sd works.
najaboy, I have a question because you seem to be knowledgeable about this. How is it that just system memory takes up 6.38 GB? Is it because of Samsung exclusive features like touchwiz and all those airgimmicks?

AH! Ok I see what your saying. I don't think it is necessary to lose root to move apps to your SD, though. I've seen a lot of positive comments about Foldermount. Foldermount should free up space in your internal storage no problem. Check it out.
I'm also pretty confident that soon the rom devs will incorporate the update that Verizon put out into their own roms.
And about your question to najaboy, the 6.38 GB is everything that makes your phone's software. Yes, air gestures, smart stay, all of that. I do find it a little misleading Samsung advertises a 16GB phone, but I like keeping my data on a card anyway.

I have the 16 gb s4 and its great an all that we have a micro sd slot but I have found the whole concept unreliable at best. For one I have had 2 different sd cards fail. One gskill 32gb class 10 and a samsung 64 gb fail. All my pictures, roms and app gone. I back them up but still not being able to trust them is a huge concern. And the 64 gb seemed like a great idea except you have to format it fat32 to get recovery to view it, and when I did that my phone constantly wanted to format it back exfat. I pretty much have no option to get a 32 gig with a mdk rom either. Just my rant as I figure out how to rma both of these cards.

Sounds like you've just had some bad luck. I've been using a 64gb Class 10 SanDisk formatted for exFat and it's worked fine so far (I even use Folder Mount to move a bunch of stuff from internal to external).
Surprised the Samsung card failed on you.
Btw, the exfat/64gb issue only exits for some implementations. I'm running Barebones ME7 rom w/ktoonsez kernel and Phils/CWM recovery and both the recovery and the kernel support 64gb exFat.

Just my rant as I figure out how to rma both of these cards.

you might be just out of luck
I'm using a sanDisk Ultra 64GB on my S4 and everything works fine (FAT32 formatted)
I've never had any SD card fail me. Never heard of gskill and there is the possibility that the samsung sd card you got was a fake...depending on where you got it. I've used PNY, Samsung, and SanDisk sd cards and all have lasted me a long time through heavy usage.
I have a 64 gig sd card and never had an issue. I use it all the time.
first thing I did was wipe and format it in twrp recovery to whatever format it wanted.
golden.
Two cards failing? Unbelievable bad luck (I have never had a storage device of any type fail...not even platter hard drives...and I'm 43 and have had my own pc of some sort for 25 years), a bad card reader in the phone, or operator error.
I'm thinking bad card reader in the phone.

I've had a couple cards go bad. It happens. Learned to do periodical back ups.

During last week of owning my S3, i took my samsung 32gb microsd out when i replaced my screen , upon getting it all finished and putting it back in, the sd was dead. I feel you on that though, sucks to loose all the pictures. Wouldnt get recognized on either of my pcs, Old 8mp digital cam tried to format it but couldnt do it.
I bought an authentic sandisk 32gb microsd to replace it, so far so good.

You need to go buy a lottery ticket, hdd/ssd/ram are the number one thin besides power supplies that die in computers. I have had probably a 10 percent failure amomg desktop ssd's since they first got popular. I build alot of computers and its definitely a brand/product line importance. Even the good guys come out with bad products time to time.

I know it's crazy. My mom plays freecell on an old pc that I bought in 1999...and it's still on its original hard drive...and still boots an xp install I made in about 2005.
I've never had ram die either. Only power supplies and monitors.

I had an almost identical issue a while back. I used to always use a Sandisk 32gb class 10 card in my S3 and other devices. I used the same card for 3 or 4 years. When I got my S4 I decided to make the jump to a 64 gb card due to the small internal storage. So I went out and bought a 64 gb Class 10 Sandisk since I have always had good experiences with their cards. First thing I popped it into my computer and re-formatted it to Fat32. Then I plugged it into my phone and it seemed to work fine for a while, then randomly it would unmount itself and remount for no apparent reason. It would do it randomly 3 or 4 times a day. I tried wiping and reformatting to fat32 again, tried exfat, and even NTFS. Failing all that I took it back and exchanged it for another identical one. Same EXACT issue... So I gave it one last shot and exchanged one more time. At this point the ladies at Wal-mart are looking at me sideways like I'm running a scam or something. Lol. Anyways, the third one worked spectatularly. I haven't had one single unmount with it and I have all the storage I could possible need. I keep two Nandroid backups on my memory at all times (and with the S4 they are HUGE, 4gbs or better) and I have like 15 gbs of music, not to mention other miscellaneous files and apks and such, and I still have 30 gbs left.
I say just try it again man. Third times a charm. And I personally would always recommend Sandisk. I have never had one fail me and lost my data or anything. They have always worked for me.

Did you format back to Fat32 on your third try? I am going through the same thing and I am on my second card, waiting for the third to come in the mail. The first one I did Fat32 and out of the blue it would get extremely hot, and then say safe to remove card without me doing anything.
The second one, I left as is, copied everything over and left it exFat. That lasted about a week and then stuff started disappearing in gallery view, BUT it was there in Root explorer. The card it a Sandisk 64 gb Mobile Ultra.

Yeah mine was the same issue, only I didn't notice any heat to speak of. And yes on the first card I got, I used a windows program called fat32format and formatted it before ever even putting it in my phone. It would intermittently unmount and remount exactly as you are describing. So I took it out, wiped and reformatted to fat32 again. Still did the same thing. So as a last ditch I tried formatting to exfat. My phone and recovery both read the card just fine, it would just unmount randomly, or when I was either listening to music or viewing my gallery (something that required high read speeds) and it would unmount and interrupt it. So, thinkiing that it was just a faulty card I exchanged for a identical new one. Same issue. This time I used a different program to reformat to fat32, I forget the name of it, but it was a command line based reformatting tool for windows. I used it and had that same problem even after several reformats. At this point I was starting to wonder if it was a problem with my phone's SD card slot., So as a last effort I did one more exhange, reformatted using the command line tool and haven't had one single unmount since then, and I have ALOT of stuff on it. I would just suggest keep trying. I think that Galaxy phones are just sensitive to card reading and if you don't have an absolutely perfect one it will have problems. Or who knows, maybe I just had that off chance of one in a million by getting two bad cards in a row. Either way, I would suggest reading this thread (if you haven't already): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773735
Use the first method on your new card. That I think is the most foolproof formatting method. Good luck, you will find the right card eventually.
Thank you!! Ill give it a shot tomorrow when the new card arrives. I appreciate that thread reference too! Fingers are crossed.

Yeah no problem. Good luck
There may be a pattern....
But I am not sure exactly what it is.
I have two nearly identical SG4s (1 for + 1 for my wife) and both have the 64GB SanDisk Micro Ultra. One phone is completely stock (my wife's) and the card is lightly used and formatted exFat. Mine is rooted and Roomed (Synergy) with TiBkup and CWM. Like other folks, I had to reformat the card to Fat32 in order to work with CWM.
As far as I can tell, she never sees any un-mount/re-mount messages on her phone but it is lightly used and she might not notice. I DO see occasional un-mount/re-mount messages, but I cannot tie it to a specific program or event. Sometimes happens right after reboot. Sometimes happens when I launch TiBkup. But goes for days with no issues.
I have never lost any data or noticed any performance hits, but now I am worried that I might.
Guess it is time to take more backups of the backups...
I have had lots of computer equipment fail over the years, but never exactly like this...
Well I followed everything nicholi2789 suggested and low and behold my card is actually working good. It does not get hot when reading ( not as hot as the other 2 anyway) and I can see a big time difference in speed. So I guess its true, the third times a charm in the case of these 64 gb Sandisk Ultra cards.
Big thanks again to nicholi2789 for pointing me in the right direction!
I bought a SanDisk Microsdxc class 10 64gb and let the phone format. It's working great. It has the fastest speeds out of all I've seen.
It's a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
At Amazon.

Glad you figured it out man. I didn't really do anything except to say keep trying. Lol. Good deal though.
The phone will claim its checking the card & then claim the card has been removed.
Anyone else with a 64GB card have this issue? My Lower gig cards work fine.
My SanDisk 64 GB card works fine here. Hard reboot your phone.
Having same issue factory reset did nothing either. Even after this little ota
Backup card to PC. Format it, and see if that helps. If not, you may need a replacement.
My 64GB SanDisk is working fine. Just ordered a Samsung EVO 128GB, should be here tomorrow (oops, no later today) I think.
Like others said. Reformat it. I'd let the phone format it.
It happens sometimes. These cards easily get corrupted too because they often run a weak file system format like FAT or ExFAT. Sharing between PC and Phone is shaky too.
I like HTC phones because they support true USB Drive mounting which is less prone to issues IMHO and much faster too. MTP is awful.
Yea my sdcard is fubard, have to testdrive rebuild, it has lost all writing priveledges. This is all caused by my old piece of **** galaxy s4. ****ing thanks applesung

My Galaxy S5 corrupted my SD card and I noticed it when I tried to put it in the M8.
Yea it sucks. I think the internal write capabilities are ruined. Looks like I have to get in touch with SanDisk supposed to have a decent warranty
