[Q] S3 nandroid doesn't restore everything - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I made a nandroid backup before trying out a new rom.
Had some problems (bootloop etc.) so decided to restore everything.
Now here's my problem: The backup I made is fully fuctioning.
However, everything that was on my internal storage is gone... Pictures, music, videos; everything.
The internal storage was pretty much filled with those.
Now, there's only 2gb used, and it's just for apps.
Any help?

At some point you preformed a factory reset, which wipes the internal storage. Nandroid can backup everything, but only if you tell it to -default only includes system and data partitions.

Nandroid question

Does a Nandroid backup always include everything thats on the internal sdcard or only selected data? I have a nandroid back from a couple of weeks ago and lost pictures from a camera folder that was on the internal sdcard because I didnt backup the card when I installed a rom yesterday. Would those pictures be on the nandroid backup?

No, nandroids don't backup the internal sd card I'm afraid
Ashton! How dare you Ninja me!
No. They are gone.
Nandroids back up everything that makes the ROM run. So system, data, cache, junk like that. Any other stuff, pictures, videos, music that is on the internal or external sd is ignored. It functions much like the system restore feature of windows.

You can backkup external SD Card from the Backup/Restore menu in Amon Ra, but internal SD isn't an option.
I always whip data factory reset, wipe cache, davlic blah blah before restoring Android. Is this necessary? Also when do you need clean wipe script,?

Yes wiping before a nandroid restore is important, and its a good habit to have.
In my opinion you don't need a clean wipe script. Just manually wipe cache, dalvic cache, data and system before installing a new Rom or restoring a nandroid backup.
I use amon ra because it works so well and it real fast.

Bricked my sisters S2 with Greenify HELP PLEASE??!

Hi,
I installed Greenify and hibernated some apps and thereafter the phone restarted on its own and is stuck in the RevoltJB logo screen.
I've tried almost everything, from taking the battery out, clearing dalvick cache and flashing the RevoltJB rom again but it's not booting.
I've made a nandroid copy to the Sd Card, system / app, data files say complete but then when it's backing up the music/videos/pics it fails. Not enough memory.
Does that mean that the nandroid backup of system apps (sms/call logs) and my sisters apps/data (whatsapp message history) haven't been backed up?
I also made a internal copy and that seemed to backup everything. Hardly any pics or music on internal memory, plus it had 8gb free.
Does that mean that both the internal and sd card backup the same things?? And can I factory reset and reinstall the RevoltJB rom and then using titanium backup get back her whatsapp messages, her sms and call logs not to mention her stupid level 50 candycrush data?
Please can someone tell me if I've been able to make a successful nandroid backup on either the sd (even if it only backed up system/apps) or internal memory and whether I have any chance of a recovery of her sms, whatsapp and candycrush data.
PS if i reinstall jb rom it won't delete my nandroid backup will it...?
Thank you for your replies in advance. I'm going crazy because she's in tears, so please can someone help me.

You don't need to worry much after making the nandroid backup you can safely wipe data/cache/dalvik cache and reflash the ROM, also along with TB try using the app nandroid manager to restore the apps, call logs, contact's etc. from the previous nandroid backup, and be careful to not format /sdcard partition its where all your data like your music, videos, nandroid backup, and other data is kept.
Hmmm seems you don't use your internal SD card much, and making a backup anywhere is not problem it will be the same thing done twice whether it be in the internal or the external SD card, just try to make a successful backup by freeing up some space, also if you have the patience to read a lot try using Aroma file manager to manually handle the required files like the contact database and stuff, though I would advice a noob to hold off until he's more experienced.

Stop being melodramatic. Bricked phones don't boot. At all
I think you froze a system app....look at @MistahBungle 's signature and read what it says.
Do a factory reset and a ROM reflash. This is the only thing you can do.And yes,all her messages and game data will be gone (you can maybe extract them manually from the Nandroid backup)

Upgraded to kitkat and appeared to have lost lots of data including backups

Hi guys please help.
I upgraded from 4.1.2 to kitkat neatrom based on slimrom.
I was going to do new nandroid backup, wiped my 2 newest to make space and then was going to do a nandroid backup but forgot as was distracted. Installed the new rom, I was aware of the new naming scheme for the fodlers and assumed it would be automatically handled or at least my data still accessible in old folders.
It seems the following has happened.
All my titanium backups wiped.
contacts/sms/call log backup data etc. wiped
Any existing files, including photos etc. in data dir wiped.
is this a known problem?
or is it not wiped and they got moved somewhere?
I have not lost everything still have some nandroid backups but none now that recent. I take blame for forgetting to do the nandroid backup but I am hoping is at least a way to recover the data that was on my sdcard.
further information.
some data is intact for example I have recording from easy voice recorder pro, yet other folders like pictures, titanium backup, ringtones all old data is gone.

Restore S-Planner

Hello,
I have made a backup of my calendar with "easy backup" from the Play Store and installed a custom rom. Therefore I made a full wipe - unfortunately I lost the backup.
I have stored both, the internal SDCard and the external SDCard to my Computer and still have this data.
Is there any possibility to restore my calendar entries with the given data?
Thank you very much

Just move the Easy Backup data folder back to your device and reinstall the app. As long as the folder is in the right spot, the app should recognize and restore your data. It's a good idea to sign into an account for the Calendar stuff so it gets stored in a cloud service, thus making this transition easier.
Thank you for your reply!
ahh I think I werent exact enough in my explaination. The problem is, that I made the backup of the internal and external SDCard first and then downloaded the backup tool of which I thought it would make the backup on the external SDCard. Unfortunately the tool stored the backup file on the internal SDCard. So the problem is, that my current backup does not hold the files of the backuptool.

Ah, I see. Gonna be out of luck then unless you
A) Had signed up with a Samsung account and it had synced before wiping
B) Have a nandroid backup of your previous rom to restore (if you don't - shame on you! lol)
If it was saved to your internal storage, then I'm not sure why it still wouldn't be there unless you intentionally wiped it in recovery. Factory data resets in a custom recovery do not touch the partition of your internal storage that you save your app data and media to.
Edit: App data in this sense is what the apps store on your internal storage partition that the phone sees as /sdcard/, which is /data/media not the regular app data stored in /data/data such as like settings and preferences, which does get wiped in a reset.

:S I do not understand that actually, because somewhere S-Planner has to save the entries - or not? So I think if I backup anything from the internal/external storage I should also have backed up the database with the entries or not ?

Restoring data using twrp?

While switching ROMs , can we restore data (internal+sd-ext) from previous ROM using twrp?
Those Who have tried it or having knowledge abt it please share..
Files stored on Internal + External SD has nothing to do with with switching ROMs.
Explanation, while backing up from twrp you get options like system, data, cache and boot.
"Data" here represents application data which includes user apps and their data (data of system apps too).
Example- You downloaded a song from chrome. That song resides on your internal storage but isn't considered as data of chrome (lets say it's external data) , while bookmarks in xhrome is considered as internal data.
So if you're worrying about your songs or photos. Then don't. Just dont wipe your internal storage or external one and everything's safe.
Now about the data partition, it's absolutely fine to restore data only from previous backup of twrp. However it may conflict in the new rom. Suppose you have a data backup of lollipop rom and you're trying to restore it on a marshmallow rom, it'll give you headache a little bit.
None of the VALUABLE application data resides on external storage. (Exceptions are always there like I've seen clash of clans caches in external storage, it's not valuable thats why I've highlighted this word earlier)
Anyway I don't think twrp back up the data stored on external storage (correct me if I'm wrong here).
So you're good to go if you're about to restore data from same version of android. Just restore and see what happens.

With SD-ext, I mean second partition which is used for link2sd or app2sd...restoring that in a same Android version on different ROM..will it create problems?
P.s thank you for your reply..?

Yes twrp won't backup linked data.
I've tried this for once.
Just do data backup from twrp and then restore it in new rom.
Since you won't be wiping your second partition of sd card. Files there won't be harmed. After restoring you'll get it working like in the previous rom.
