Not unless you are already rooted. Does the PC not recognize that you have plugged it in at all or does it just not load the drivers correctly? Best way to tell is to open your Device Manager and plug in the phone. the DM should reload and show something, whether an error or not. If it does not blink out and reload when you plug / unplug the phone, then it's either a hardware issue with the phone's USB port, a bad cable, or bad USB port on PC. And it is possible for a phone to charge correctly, but have issues connecting to a computer if the data pins are messed up. If it IS the phone's port, the repair isn't that bad and could be handle with some patience and simple tools as this one does not involve soldering. You'd need this:

Dude really thankful,
As you say, the PC dosn't recognize that the phone is plugged at all, I try all the usb port on my laptop, different cable, and even different laptop and the same problem keep comming up.
I tried also to reboot in odin mode to see if my laptop detecet anything, but nada, nothing in the DM.
Also, like you expect, it can charge but no data connection, and whene it turned off and I plug it it automaticly turned on by itself.
I pretty convinced that it usb port is screwed.
So, to install a rom my phone have to be rooted!! no way to root it from the recovery mode?!
Thanks again

You can try to clean your USB port of the phone with some compressed air, in case some pocket lint got in there too. Doesn't take much to mess these things up, unfortunately. But yea, I doubt there is a way to root it in the stock recovery as most Samsung phones don't have this option. It'd take less time to just fix it probably then figuring out how to jump through all the other hoops to find a way around it.

Please take the time to read this:I flashed and installed SkyRaider a couple days ago and I noticed when I connected to my PC that my PC started recognizing it as HTC Phone (or something of the like). This apparently really screwed up my drivers on my computer because I installed iKReaM and now I can't even get into disk drive mode...it doesn't ask what connection type I want anymore and my computer just says "USB Device Not Recognized". I tried uninstalling the HTC Driver Installer but that didn't do anything either. This is not good as I ran into the same problem when trying to root my friends Samsung Fascinate and never go the problem fixed. Anyways...my phone worked perfect before and SkyRaider evidently messed it up pretty good...to say I am pissed is an understatement. If you need any more info please let me know.
Please link me to the newest HTC Drivers as well, it would be much appreciated.
If no one can help I will have to do a clean install of windows 7, which is not an enjoyable experience

You will have to buy the pro version to push files. That would be your easy solution.
You can always use recovery to get into usb mode as well.

I can't get into recovery anymore using usb mode, computer doesn't recognize the device so no way to use it...and I would use the Wifi app instead of using a usb cable? I see what you mean by easy but I don't wanna avoid the problem...I have a brand new $1600 Alienware so I would like to have it fixed lol...if need be I may just have to do a clean install
I know this isn't your actual problem but just for the record, AirDroid lets you control your phone and push files to it with a web browser and wifi for free.
(I tried linking it but I guess I haven't made enough posts to include links yet, easy to find by searching the Market tho)
You might check under Settings/ Connect to PC to make sure the Ask Me option is turned on.

When you plug your phone into your computer does the phone start to charge?
If so restart the computer and plug the phone into a different usb port. Check device manager and see if you have it listed in your usb devices, or you have an ! over a usb. Most of the time this ends up being an issue with the computer it is being hooked to, not the phone. The computer isn't launching the driver correctly to show the phone that it is connected to a computer, and not just a wall outlet.
Even when I've had this issue, which is random I have still been able to use recovery usb to manage it. Make sure when your in recovery you mount the sdcard before enabling the usb.
Ok boys and girls, my pc had a short in the power supply. Now I get the, the usb device has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it message. Tried on 3 different computers. And yes I do have the correct drivers installed. I wish it was that simple. I didn't know if there is a trick. the phone still charges from the computer,in fact I can still open the phones drives on the pc. The one thing I can't do is Odin. After calling support and having them send me the drivers based on my serial number, im certain I have the correct drivers. At this point I've been on Miui and Ics passion for 2 months. I can only flash back and forth nothing else will take. I will be grateful for any input, thank you
I even tried mobile Odin, it just says device not supported I assume it has something to do with it being 2.3.7 unsure.
I do not see how a short in the PSU would cause your problem. Maybe a bad USB port on your PC (eg. USB positive & negative backwards will kill a USB device plugged into it), but if the phone is charging while plugged into the PC USB and Odin isn't recognizing it, then try uninstalling Odin as well as the drivers and starting from a clean slate.

If the phone SD card can be mounted, it sounds like the hardware is ok. You could always try an sdb connection, or Heimdall from a Linux box.
Well, the day before it occurred to me that I'd like to install a custom ROM, therefore I went on to plug my phone into my PC and for my surprise, the phone didn't pop that MTP warning and the PC did not recognize it.
So I went around and changed USB ports, cables and PCs, same thing.
Decided to try Mass Storage mode, when I press the START button and put in the cable it goes back into the main start screen.
So I went on and tried that *#7284# trick people used since apparently 4.0.3 bugged some crap stuff in the phone, no success either.
Strangely enough I can connect the "pendrive dongle" and it will map pendrives.
Well, I don't have my phone rooted or with SU so that means CWM from app store won't be able to install the recovery module, and I can't install... you get the picture.
Nor ODIN nor HEIMDALL will recognize my phone in recovery mode, wich suggests that the data lanes on my phone went somewhat dead.
Finally, any cable I plug in the phone says it's charging my device, wich leads me to belive that the usb port is dead.
Anyone had this issue?
Anyone can confirm me I'll have to take it to Sammy's assistance?
Sure looks like the USB is dead/dying.
Sent from my digital submersible hovercraft.
So I got one more question, can I root and/or install CWM so I do not stay dependent of the USB to update it or I do need to plug in the USB to install CWM through ODIN?
Several problems
It can be several reasons
1.the usb is dead buy new
2. try factory resetting the device
3. install kies on pc it will install all the drivers that you need
4.your usb port(of the phone) is dead
I had the same problem pc was saying "USB cannot be recognized" I TRIED EVERYTHING from factory resetting, changing pc usb ports, changing usb, changing kernel, roms, trying on other pc, reinstalling kies and drivers but nothing. The problem was in the usb port on the phone where you connect the charger on the phone. That part is weak and so you have to change it. Take to customer service with your warranty and they will fix it without charging anything just tell them your problem and say that you read that most of the galaxy s2 users have this problem and that you didn't touch the hardware of the phone

Warranty has already expired.
Kies was installed on the PC, ODIN gives no info @ COM port.
I wanted to connect it just to root and install CWM so I can swap ROMs as much as I want.
Thing is, the customer service wants 1 week to assess the issue and probably 100USD to fix it.
So for some god-knows-why reason my phone decided to conect to MTP while charging, I quickly restarted it into revocery mode and flashed CF_Root w/ CWM5.5.
Successful!
Bloody USB thingy!
Now I can start messing around with the phone.
Anyone has a n00blet guide on ROMs?
I was thinking about moving to CM 10.1, one of those nightlies running 4.2.2.
This is the one I used >> CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OXX_LPE-v5.5-CWM5
Can anyone suggest actions?
For future you should change your USB-Port. Here we get one for about 15 € (about 20 $) in ebay. It's very simple to change and then you have a full working phone again. Just watch the Videos on Youtube and everyone can do this. Hope I could help!
Hi guys,
Its a bit confusing but I'll try to keep it as short as possible. It seems basically that I can charge fine in recovery and download but not in the ROM. Syncing doesn't work at all except download..
I have an i9100m. Ran NeatROM and RootBOX and dabbled with a few roms.
Now I'm not sure if it was the roms or wear and tear but I had ASSUMED until today that my USB port was messed. It would not even charge from a PC nevertheless mount as a mass storage on my PC. It can charge fine from an AC adapter.
Anyway, today I randomly decided to put my phone into download mode and what do you know, the phone detects, and I even see it in ODIN, so I guess my USB port is not messed afterall. Perhaps something with the ROMs and kernels that messed it up?
I think this was around the same time when my Triangle went away.... (I never removed it). In download mode now, it says:
Custom binary Download: NO
Current Binary: SAMSUNG Official
I'm rooted and not stock at all so I wonder if that's the cause?
I was thinking of downloading a stock TAR of my carrier and flashing through ODIN. Do you guys think this is sufficient to "Reset" it back to how it was all the way before? And then I'll root and go back to one of my trusted roms (and not mess around)
Thanks
Do you use the original USB cable to connect your phone? That could be an issue.
Anyways, I don't think that something is messed up software-side if you tried several ROMs.
Worst case is that the USB port of your phone is damaged =/
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9100 mit Tapatalk 4 Beta
Yes I am using the original cable. (all same result but obviously wanted to use the original just in case)
I was thinking the USB port was damaged too because after reading, I guess apparently I accidentally created a usb jig? (triangle went away + stats wiped...)
But that aside, if my USB port is damaged, how come when I'm in download mode, PC and ODIN detect a device is connected and it charges, whereas within the ROM, I get neither ???
Just an update guys,
I used ODIN to flash completely back to stock... and I still cannot charge from PC. Basically computer doesn't see the phone at all. So it has to be a damaged port.. unless theres something else other than the internal SD that I can wipe????? I wanted to wipe everything..
Still really puzzles me though... that ODIN can see it in Download Mode.
One of the mysteries I guess.
Did you try to clean your mini usb port on the mobile? It could help.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
So....your phone only charges on DL Mode?????
Sent from the little guy
I have tried to blow some air in there.. any other suggestions?
Well, the computer only recognizes the device in download mode, Windows sees the device, otherwise it doesn't.Just strange that I was able to flash an entire stock image through ODIN but in the ROM can't even get the computer to recognize that ANYTHING is plugged in (or the phone to charge so the phone doesn't see anything either)
And again, whats even more strange is that i had that one cheap extendable USB cable that probably messed everything up (it removed my triangle..so I accidentally somehow created a jig?) is able to CHARGE the phone even in ROM but still the computer can't see it as a device. LOL
This is so messed. I guess my main thing is even if I go ahead to replace the USB port (get it repaired), do you guys still think this problem would occur... =\

I currently have the exact same problem, except for the flaky usb cable removing your triangle. Mine is still there.
I brought my S2 to a repair shop because i was sure it was my USB port, but the guy there told me it connected in download mode just fine so the USB port should be fine.
Here is what I tried so far
- cleaned USB port
- Used diferent cables
- Used different PC's
- Used different kernals
- Used different roms
- Re-formated/cleared/wiped everything I could find.
Did anyone find a solution? Should I still have my USB port replaced?

hardware problem
So i have a motorola razr xt910 and i was running the jellywiz rom before this thing happened. So what i did was, boot into bmm recovery, restored cid, did a full wipe and immediately tried to flash the mokee rom. When it was done, i rebooted and got a FASTBOOT FLASH FAILURE. Later, i tried to use RSD lite to fastboot it back to europe ics but the com did not detect the phone. I tried lots of stuff
1. Tried another pc
2. Reinstalling the drivers
3. Tried different cables even the motorola OEM one
4. Spent money to replace the micro usb port on my phone
5. Factory resetting my phone a few times
6. I tried with my friend's razr on a pc with all the appropriate drivers, the pc could detect my friend's phone but not mine
But all of them did'nt work, it is still stuck in fastboot flash failure for 3 weeks now. Any solutions? Thanks in advance

I had a very similar problem- the proper cable was necessary for my computer to recognize the phone. I uninstalled all of my USB drivers, and let windows reinstall them. This has helped with my SGS3 for recognizing the device. I used RSD 5.7, and having adequate power is imperative.
EDIT
When I say I reinstalled the drivers, I don't mean the Moto drivers. I uninstalled my USB device drivers in Control Panel> Device Manager, and then I reinstalled the motorola device manager, which reinstalled the motorola drivers. However, if your computer doesn't even recognize an unknown USB device connected, then it sounds like either A) a USB cable issue, or B) a USB A port issue.

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for trying to help. Okay so I tried what you said, I uninstalled the USB device drivers and let windows reinstall them rebooted my pc then reinstalled motorola device manager. When i plugged in my phone, the pc still did not detect it although i was using a motorola oem cable fresh from the box. It is definitely not a USB port issue as I tried pluggin in my mouse and omy thumbdrive into the other ports and it could detect them and install the drivers. So any solutions? I'm starting to miss her.
Do you have access to the fastboot menu at all? Any of the options, aside from AP fastboot? What is the battery status?

I have access to the fastboot menu all the options available and the battery is OK. Its just that when i plug it in to the pc it does not detect the phone.
Will the PC recognize the phone under any of the other boot options? (BP Tools, diag, BP SBF flash, Recovery, etc.) When I got to the point where my power source was adequate, and all I had trouble with was PC-Phone recognition, I purchased an OEM Moto charger from Verizon with a cable that said "factory data" on it. I wish I could be of more help, but that was the last step to fix my problem. It recognized immediately, and I successfully flashed. It sounds like you've covered all your bases on the PC end. Let us know if you find a solution!

Thanks for your concern. The pc did not detect the phone in an of the other options so the last resort is using that cable. Is it the same as the factory cable, can i make one myself cause i have a soldering iron at home. Or ordering one online would be better?
I would say go ahead and make one. Just beware, a lot of USB cables (most) have either rubber or hot glue molded around, so it is difficult to expose the contacts on the Micro B connection. There is a great tutorial by MotoCache1, located HERE, that will give you the rundown. It's worth a shot. My only concern is that the idea of the factory data cable is to trick the phone into thinking there is a good power source (without a battery/dead battery). I would think that finding the right USB cable would effectively solve your problem, but go for it, and let us know how it works. You can order the cable (if TeamBlackHat has them... or you can find one sold out of Cali on Ebay, I've heard), and that may be the ticket. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I will give it a shot when I have the time. However I was wondering why my phone would run into such a problem. Before that when i flashed roms and soft bricked it, i could still recover it using rsd lite and fastboot files. Secondly, my usb cable was woking fine until just before i landed into this mess. The phone could not be detected by the pc in usb storage mode so i resorted to using google drive instead of actually solving the problem.
By the way, could i have the model number of the motorola oem factory data cable you bought. I dont live in the US so i may need to buy it from another shop. Thanks!
You may very well have a hardware problem, if you were having connection problems before the fastboot errors. Could be the contacts on the micro female in your phone. It sounds like you definitely have a data transfer problem if you couldn't mount for mass storage.
The only number I could locate is SKN6430A.

Appropriate USB cable, unfortunately. Motorolas are very picky. Even if you weren't having problems with a particular cable before, like me (fastboot flash would start, but not finish, first time I encountered a problem), the right cable solved my it. OEM Motorola data cable.

Okay I guess it all goes down to the cable. I've got a SKN6378A from motorola but it doesn't work. So what is the appropriate cable i should get or should i just send my phone to the motorola service centre and ask them to help me solve it?
I'm certain they can diagnose the problem, though I couldn't say for certain what the cost would be. You may have better luck purchasing a used phone on eBay. I can understand your frustration, to an extent, though you're problem is turning out to be more complicated than mine! Motorola tech support may also be able to help, remotely.

Hey I Know You Said You Already Tried Using A Different Computer But Were They Different Operating Systems? I Had A Similar Problem RSDlite Wouldn't Recognize My Phone On Windows 8 But Connected Just Fine On Windows 7.
fastboot not detected
while the PC recognize the phone under any of the other boot options BP, Tools, diag (here the phone goes black), BP SBF flash, Recovery, why the fastboot is not recognized? im on a xt910, i have no system.. and i remember that previosly, he wasnt able to be recognized even as an mass storage... so weird.. then i messed up, and i cant do nothing because all the do able thing is via fastboot.. is there any chance to do something via recovery stock without getting operation aborted?.. oh, another hint, i mess a little with the entry of the female usb on the xt910, and now i have an "unknown device" maybe is broken.. and if i disarm it, and i cut a cable, and green and white should be data, maybe ill be able to flash something via rsd.. damn is so weird that the bp is recognized in rsd but fasboot not.. and i cant buy nothing, i just have a knife, two cables(i cutted one to put the negative positive directly to the battery) and wi fi. thanks in advances, and yes i know that is an old thread, but i dont know what else to do. /And sorry for my english, i dont speak it.
