[Q] Z2 new update 17.1.A.2.69 causing unroot? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Z2 is rooted. Today popped up a notification says "new update 17.1.A.2.69 available", asking me to connect to PC to proceed the update. I was wondering is the new update going to unroot my phone? Should I not install the updates? Thanks.

Yes it will unroot but your superSu or superuser app should have a OTA survival option, click it and try updating as root will attempt to "survive the update" it doesent always work so i dont recomend trying it
If not you can always reroot, it isn't too hard

I only know that usually updating from Sony PC Companion will download the whole firmware,so it's going to wipe your system, and the root will be gone, but you still can root it.
Your internal storage won't be wiped.

Update available but doesn't install - Because of root?

I rooted my phone a few months back, purely for backing up purposes etc so I still have the stock firmware etc. I just checked for updates and it is saying there is a firmware update available. It downloads and goes through the install process but doesn't actually change anything, when I check for updates it informs me again that the update is there.
Is this because I have rooted my phone or is there another issue? Should I avoid installing updates when my phone is rooted? I'm not really fussed about CFW at the moment, I just like the root to have that little bit more access.
Thanks
If you install an OTA update, you will loose root.
You can check if its root or the update might not been downloaded correctly by using Kies with the USB cable.

Thanks,
I don't mind losing the root so much, as I guess I can just re-root it? What I'm finding strange is that the update just plain didn't do anything lol. Kernel version is the same, gingerbread version is the same and firmware version is the same.

[Q] 4.3 OTA update issue. Help!

Hi guys,
I have searched the forums for the answer to this but without success.
I bought my Z ultra (C6802) a few months ago. Rooted it using Kingo and updated to 14.1.B.2.257 and everything was fine so I was happy. My Bootloader is still locked however I have root.
Now a few weeks back I've seen an OTA flash up offering the 14.2.A.0.290 (4.3) update. I finally decided I'd go with the OTA update, however after trying to let it do its thing, it doesn't upgrade properly and after rebooting etc gives me an error saying "Could not install new software update. Try again."
I have tried a couple of things to get this working:
1. Tried clearing the data for update centre and redownloading.
2. Tried temp unrooting using OTA rootkeeper.
Neither of these make any difference.
I think after rooting that I uninstalled a couple of default Sony apps that were no longer needed (very carefully). Could this be the reason for the OTA failing?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
You have to update using PC Companion. You'll lose root though, but you'd lose that either way, so just update through PCC and root it again.

before updating back up the TA partition
as @LordManhattan said you will lose root though. if you want to keep a locked BL you cant get root using the PCC way, you have to flash FTFs and recoveries etc, see the thread in the general section for locked BL
YES. Backup your TA partition!
Ok thanks for the responses guys. I've already backed up my TA partition before, but will try flashing using PC companion later.

[Q] Failing OTA update after unroot(.108)

Hello!
My phone can't seem to accept the OTA file, even after I've unrooted it. I don't have custom recovery and I have a locked bootloader.
The error message is "The file could not be verified" which I supposed was because of the root, apparently not.
Anyone know what's up? It's the standard C6833.
It`s because Rooting changes sone Files. Just back up your Data and use the Update Centre for reflashing
Alright I understand, I thought a unroot and removal of supersu would suffice.
Update center, that's the Sony PC companion yes? Won't I loose all my data?
Even with a backup, don't I have to set up the whole phone again? As if I would flash a ftf?

yes whith this method you loose the Data, but you can also try to flash an FTF, which should have the same effect. You just have to set some Files to the state bevore rooting or wait till you get the Update via PC Companion or update Service. I think the best way for you is to wait till PC Companion shows you the update.

[Q] If I update to 314 firmware, do I lose root?

Hi,
I have a UK unbranded xperia z2 and just received notification that there is new firmware.
It says I can download it via wifi without connecting to a PC.
I have previously rooted the device without unlocking the bootloader. I am wondering - if I update the firmware over wifi will I lose root?
If so is rooting it again as easy as it was the first time? I think the first time I used easy rooter app
Thanks

Yes and Yes, you will loose root but rooting with your favourite root exploit should be identical procedure.

I just tried OTA update and it said it "could not verify" - after some research seems I have to remove root. But I dont want to have to wipe my phones data.
Is there a way to remove root without wiping data? In superSU, there is a "Full Unroot" option but will this actually remove root so I can update?
Flash the unbranded ftf for 314 UK, via flashtool, specifying no wipe for data and you should be OK although you'll have to reroot afterwards.

OTA update generally removes root. But you should be able to root again with the same procedure. The full unroot option in SuperSU does actually what it says and will fully unroot your device allowing you to update the firmware.
Just give it a try.
Hit thanks if it helped

[Q] ABOUT root

Hey everybody
I know this will be stupid question
But now am on stock .28 rooted
If I got an update I can update normally using update center?
Or I have to unroot??
Thanks.
You can't update if you have rooted your phone.
OTA updates will be denied because of the modifications you have made. You will get a "could not verify" error
But if you force the update via PC Companion you will loose root, recovery and all the apps that need root such as xposed framework will stop working
Its not a problem to lose the root
But if I updated via PC companion it will update my android?

Why don't u update through flashtools ?
You'll find your desired firmware in its Database
Link: http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php
Be aware: Your internal storage will be wiped.
With the flashtool I need the ftf file to flash
Then I dont wanna lose any data

You won't loose any data if you upgrade. Downgrades need all the wipes; updates no. And PC Companion may or may not work because sometimes it will deny updates to modified devices.
