hi peeps
1st time ever handling a andriod device. given a galaxy s3 that was just flashing the splash screen in a loop.
history is that phone was downloading an app, but fiald and crashed the phone. the battery was pulled out and thats when the flashing samsung splash screen loop started.
did a little research and downloaded both odin3 and kies. tried flashing with odin3 but keeped getting a failed message.
tired kies firmware upgrade and initialization option, add the model number and s/n as required. but process goes so far and says "THIS DEVICE VERSION CAN NOT BE UPDATED"
as stated, new to the andriod scene, so all hell very much appreciated.

He meant recovery mode on the phone,
1. Remove the battery and leave the phone for a couple of minutes to fully discharge then put it back in
2. Hold Volume Up + Home + Power together until the phone boots up then release the buttons and it will go into recovery
3. Use the volume button to move up and down the list of option
4. Find Factory Reset, highlight it then press the power button to start the process
The phone will hopefully reboot properly after this but it will have wiped the data as that is what factory reset does.

If you are pressing them all at the same time it may be the power button is powering the phone, just to make sure press the volume up and home button then whilst holding them down press the power button so that you are holding all 3 down that way.

Can you enter "Download" mode?
- Hold Vol Down + Home button and keep holding it
- Press and hold power button (all 3 buttons)
- Leave them when you are shown a warning
- Press Vol Up to enter download mode
If you can enter download, then I can suggest flashing stock firmware from Odin
- Start up Odin (I se 3.07)
- Load up the downloaded stock rom and wait till it is complete
- Connect the phone (should be in download mode)
- You'll see "Added" status
- Only 2 options should be selected (Auto Reboot and Reset Time) nothing else
- "Start"
PS: If you're on 4.1 then I recommend staying on 4.1 esp if you flash a lot of roms. Stay away from the official 4.3 otherwise you might get radio/baseband issues later on which cause network issues.

Your emmc chip is corrupt or damaged, the NAND write fail message is the proof.
Try flashing the rescue firmware (search in general forum), but follow the guide exactly as it includes a pit file.
If that fails then you need a new motherboard.

Can you access recovery now? if yes, try a "factory rest/data wipe" option and reboot
If this doesn't work, then you'll need a rescue firmware from here.
As previously mentioned: Use it with a lot of care.

Do this exactly....
- Leave USB Cable plugged into PC, but NOT INTO PHONE...
- pull battery from phone
- hold down VOLUP & VOLDOWN and do not let go
- insert battery...do not let go of VOLUP & VOLDOWN
- insert USB Cable into phone...do not let go of VOLUP & VOLDOWN
So long as nothing is totally bork'd you should see download mode pop up in a few seconds at this point..if so..you can let go now.

Ok....try getting it back to download mode as I described....
Are you using Odin3 v1.00 or v1.30? Depending on your version of Windows, the phases of the moon and all sorts of randomness having v1.0 stall at cache.rfs can be a common occurence.
Try using Odin3 v1.30 located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790026 if you are using v1.00. I've had much better luck with this version on x64 boxes...

LOL No need for thanks. I figured all this out the hard way, with help from XDA. Just sharing the wealth. These phones seem pretty hard to brick.
Dude, thanks! You saved me too, I was getting alittle scared myself
I am following the instructions from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810130
When I follow all the instructions ODIN gets stuck here:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
What am I doing wrong? I used ROM Manager and Clockwork Recovery to flash Nerov5 and want to go back to stock. Help!
reboot your computer, restart odin and try again.
Sometimes that works.
What version of odin are you using?
I keep v3 1.0, 1.3 and 1.52 handy
1.52 usually works best for me but sometimes depending what I flashing I need to use 1.0
good luck
Just tried the restart but still have the same problem. I'm using ODIN v3 1.0...I'll try 1.52 and see if that helps.
Odin 1.52 gave me this:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
It stopped there. Thanks for your help so far...any other suggestions?
To anyone who is interested I figured out the problem. The instructions in the original post were unclear about going into download mode. To get into download mode you HAVE to do this IN THIS ORDER:
Take the battery out of the phone.
Connect the battery-less phone to your computer via USB cable
Press and HOLD both volume keys (volume up AND volume down)
Do NOT touch the Power key!
Insert the battery while simultaneously holding the volume keys.
Profit.
If you don't do it this way you won't get into download mode. Everything works fine from there.
Ok so im total noob but i need help! I rooted my Vib then tried installing a new rom... i didnt delete anything like i was supposed to so when the rom was finished my vibrant re booted and was way discolored it finally booted but then kept re booting constantly. I then went into download mode and tried flashing back to original with various tar files using odin... Now i cannot get into download mode ive tried every way. when i power the vibrant on now it says: Galaxy S gtI9000... which probably isnt good... considering its the vibrant.. it then boots into recovery mode and none of the options work and down is now up and up is down on my volume to select choices. this is what it says:

What bootloader are you using? the froyo one or gingerbread?
i was originally 2.2 froyo if that is what you mean
I'm just curious what you were flashing, in terms of whether you were going to Gingerbread ROM or sticking with a Froyo rom. Sounds similar to a time where I messed up flashing my phone in odin, and since it was a gingerbread bootloader, I forgot that download mode had changed. If you are the same case as I was, then download mode is up volume and power. If its another thing, I probably won't be the best, but I'm sure someone around here will know what to do.
I believe it was Darkys_v10.1_Extreme_Edition rom... When i hold volume up and power then put my usb in it says: POWER RESET or UPLOAD MODE. I just now tried opening odin a com was recognized i opened a pit and a pda and it sayed:
<ID:0/011> Added!!
<ID:0/011> Odin v.3 engine (ID:11)..

<ID:0/011> SetupConnection..
and nothing happens lol... thx for the quick responces btw
What I did way before I started flashing roms, is I purchased a download mode jig I never had to use it but I have it just in case.
Try pulling the battery.
Then open odin on the computer. While holding the lower volume button down, plug the phone to the computer.
Odin should recognize the phone and just go back to stock from here. Make sure you read up on going back to stock first. You should check this thread out. It has alot of useful info.

You need to get back into download mode and flash back to stock. Make sure you download what ever rom you are trying to use from another source. Some of the files could be corrupt. Also make sure you do your research!!! READ READ and if you think u know it all... READ some more!
It doesn't hurt to ask people questions on these forums but you have to know what files you have and what you want your phone to be 2.2/2.3/2.3.4 based rom, Start slow go from stock 2.1 to 2.2 then try the CyanogenMod. TAKE your time! You'll be fine GL
I cannot get into download mode. I just bought a jig hopefully that works
Hope it works as well. I've seen phones in this case require JTAG so if you need that let me know. I have an order from a Mike G from last night so maybe that's you. If so, it will go out Monday...
yeah thats me
That happened to me once to, all I did was Google how to get into dowload mode the i9000 way, try it while your jig is still on it's way

sigh!!!!! i had it working perfectly (almost) apart from being in i9000 format.... i downloaded rom manager from the market installed selected reboot into recovery and now im BACK stuck in recovery and cant get kies mini to read the phone... so i uninstalled kies mini and still nothing after reinstalling it.. keep in mind in recovery mode volume up is volume down... i can toggle between options but power does nothing unless i hold it.. then it just restarts into recovery
im going to try installing kies mini for captivate :O
no luck back to waiting for the jig

Plug USB cable into computer.
Take battery out of phone.
Plug USB cable into phone.
Hold down Volume Down button.
While holding Volume Down, put battery into phone.
This should put you into Download mode.
...............
When reflashing back to stock or a recovery through Odin, make sure you always have drivers installed before you do anything. Also make sure to run Odin as adminstrator. Also in odin make sure that in the box labeled ID:COM, that you have a port show up in that box.
Also make sure you have REPARTITION, F. RESET TIME, FLASH LOCK, PHONE EFS CLEAR AND PHONE BOOTLOADER UPDATE unchecked. Also make sure that you loaded your .tar file under PDA and not any other box.

Something that might help is to go into your recovery and reset the phone to default and wipe the cache's...male sure there's no leftovers in there.

The file you flashed is possibly corrupted.
Use the Odin3 to flash CWM recovery then flash root kernel. Everything you need is in Bigjoe's Super Everything thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28040353
Look under the big green arrow in the first post.
I have a YPG70 that I thought was dead and had the phone-yellow!triangle-pc icon only able to show. I was able to flash it using a ton of different sites finally, and can get to the downloader screen and I also can boot into an Android System recovery <3e> screen but it's as if the Power button won't work for Enter to select anything. Odin seems to recognize when I'm on that screen but when I go to flash the .tar file it fails, and stays stuck here...

You have to take the battery out. There's 3 screws, 2 underneath the USB port and 1 in the sd card bay. Pop the left side first. Take the clip off then pop it back on to reset. Then plug Odin in. I had the same issue the other day

Thanks for your reply. So if I do that it will boot up fine? After all the time I've put in trying so many things I would love it to be that simple, but I honestly feel like it would take more than that. I have to figure out how to take the it apart without damaging it then.

Well, that didn't work. Thanks for the suggestion. Same error on recovery screen and still just gets stuck at "setup connection" in Odin.
