Just clearing up what cybojenix said by no, he means no you have to unlock your bootloader first, all current root methods for the Moto E require you to unlock your bootloader.

Can't we modify the the stock firmware's system.IMG file and flash that?
If the signature remains intact then we can flash it as stock firmware upgrade.
I know the post above meant the same thing or something similar.
Yet if we can do something like this...

I will lock my device and try it with the twrp method, as that will give better results..

If you modify the system.img file, you would have to unpack the archive to modify and when you pack it again, signature will change! hence No it cannot be done

Thats what I meant to say that if there is any way to modify without losing the signature.

How can I simply root gingerbread on ATRIX? Method that doesn't require unlocked bootloader

Just search for it there are threads about this.
I'm sure gingerbreak works but I'm not 100% sure.

Gingerbreak does not work.
You must use the Preinstall method found here.

hmm, that unlocks the bootloader, and I would preffer not to do that just yet, just in case i might need warranty.
and i would probably loose everything on the phone, since i can't use titanium backup.

Preinstall does not need the boot loader unlocked. That is the method I used and worked perfectly fine. Its when you flash new kernels and such that you need the bootloader unlocked, that's the info I've gotten . I'm stock with only root right now. Use the moto-fastboot the flash the preinstall.img.

SGTShark is correct. Preinstall does not unlock the bootloader. I rooted my phone using that method and I an not unlocked.

recovery without bootloader unlocking.. possible?

so i'm about to install 4.5.91 in a few hours.. gonna backup lots of data first..
im trying to avoid bootloader unlocking for the meanwhile cause of the warranty issue and the fact u cannot re-lock.
anyway i just grabbed ATT-2.3.4_Pudding_preroot.rar and ill flash it over the gladiatrix 1.8.3 i have currently on the device (will it work?)
later i intend to use the preroot method and root and of course.. install a recovery BUT.. since the new recovery needs an unlocked bootloader.. ill use the previous one with the battery charging hack
so.. what do you think guys? will it work?

I would assume the att-2.3.4_pudding_preroot already is preunlocked (hence the pudding) which defeats your purpose?
Also, what would the purposed of the old plugged in Recovery? It won't install any of the new ROMs and I don't think the nandroid back up really works that well.
not quite.. its just have the "pudding" in it.. you'll have to perform an unlock with fastboot to void warranty.

Ok, so the other question - point of the old recovery? Just to help you wipe data/cache/batterystats?
The old recovery will still save him... You shouldn't need to be unlocked to do that.

save him from what and how? other than wiping data... he can't flash anything that can save him...
Indeed I think he can backup with old tenfar's recovery. The problem is that the sfb he wants to flash is the incorrect one, you can't use the prerooted without unlock the BL at least for the version I know. In other hand The update process is kinda complicated without unlocking the BL, if you do it OTA you will also update the BL and that one can't be unlocked now also could leave you bricked if flash back to 1.8.3.

gives stock 2.3.4 without touching bootloader.
you should be able to use preinstall method to root then i think.
He needs to unlock the BL to flash kennp image files.

Sure is nice when there is a flaw in stock code that allows you to inject root (privilege escalation).
Sorry its a pet peve of mine, I'd rather an unlocked bootloader and secure system so I know that if I'm on stock nothing gets root until I'm ready for root by unlocking the bootloader.
/soapbox lol

BL was bypassed, not unlocked. Nexus devices, some Sony devices, and some HTC devices can have the BL unlocked (commands in fastboot, no root required to do) but BUMP just tricks the bootloader then requires boot imgs to be signed with the DEVs keys (from my understanding).
This means it is not a true unlock but will act as a unlock if the imgs are signed by the devs (I'm not privy to the actual method so I could be off a bit)
With a true unlock you take a step, outside of the normal system, usually wiping data in the process, to enable an unsigned recovery that allows you to flash a new system. This means if I steal your device I can't root it and install a few apps then give it back with you not knowing, or steal your CC info stored in a db file using root privileges.
Sammy and LG root/unlocks are backwards. I can take your device, install stump, delete stump, install a root/hidden tracker, and follow where you go without your knowledge, all in about 15 mins.

Unroot and lock bootloader

Hello! I regret rooting, i found no real benefits for my taste of rooting this phone. Whats the process to unroot (magisk) and install stock again? Can i relock bootloader again? Thanks

Yes. Just simply run the fastboot lock bootloader command. That should work and also wipe your root access in the process. But remember, it will completely wipe your phone.
Edit: the command actually might be fastboot oem lock actually.

Question LOCK Bootloader Again

Anyone know how this is done? I am getting a failed error when entering fastboot flashing lock, says invalid android images.
Need to relock to return device.
Why do you have to lock it to return?

That's why you are returning it. I asked why you need to lock it. Did they tell you that you had to? If not, just send it back. They'll re-image it before giving it to somebody else anyway.

This. I highly recommend using the Android Flash Tool to return to stock. If the partitions are not completely stock, you may face issues when attempting to relock.
Use the Android Flash Tool to wipe, force flash all partitions, and lock bootloader.
