Hello everyone,
My S2 doesn't charge anymore. Not at all.
I know it's not a battery problem because I tried putting in the battery of a Galaxy 2 taht works, and it was all fine.
I've searched the Internet and came accross 2 types of tutorial:
1 - to change the USB connector
2 - to change the charging dock
How would I know whether I should change (1) only the connector or (2) the whole dock?
Thanks in advance
T.
Replace the entire USB board. Costs ~US$10 to do yourself. KeithRoss39 has a guide in General (search for 'Replacing USB charger board') which has all the info you need to get it done quickly/easily (and cheaply as previously mentioned).
I have the same issue.... see here:

Keith linked his guide in there too
@mistaBungle - Your signature is overshadowing your posts
As @MistahBungle says....replace the entire board. If you try to replace just the socket, you may well succeed.....but in the process you might damage other components.....which will mean replacing the board anyway...
Micro electronics and 'imprecisely' applied soldering iron heat is NEVER a good combination.......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right

Ok guys and girls, this thread is for hardware hacks. The reason for creating this thread is initially to address two scenarios.
Bricked device
HBOOT/Recovery Mismatch
And the goal is to produce two things.
JTAG pinouts for the flyer
Build a low cost emergency charger that can be used to recharge a completely flat flyer battery in order to recover from the unbootable state.
A bootstrap battery pack to be used as an alternative to #2, giving enough power to flash the correct recovery and charge normally.
I will be working on item 2 in the two lists first ( and number 3 on the second list) , because it's both a more common thing to encounter and because I need equipment that I don't currently have for number 1.
Did you search the DEV section before creating this thread? I swore I seen a couple of threads talking about this.
Another nice thread Globatron, do you think you could give a short description about what a Jtag/ort jtag unit is for people that aren't familiar? Too avoid those repetitive questions..
Sent from my HTC Flyer.
Sure, I'll do that.
Here's a visual tear-down of the Flyer from TechRepublic for those that have never opened it up.
http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/...3?seq=2&tag=content;siu-container#photo-frame
Man. This is really not like tearing a Laptop or a PC. After such tear up i don´t think i could get it all back together. All parts ant connections are so small, i don´t even see what part to connect to JTAG pins. And yes the screwdriver a shape of a star
Ok, so for the charger design there are two basic options and one extended option:
USB powered
Mains brick powered
Both, mains power taking priority if both are connected
Can I get a feeling of what people would like to see in terms of supply? I will not be using the flyer charger as a power source due to the problem of obtaining the custom connector to mount on a pcb but I can do a wide-rage input to cover ~ 5V - 28V.
The booster battery method is simpler. I'll have a prototype done as soon as I get a delivery of the appropriate connectors.
A couple more software procedures and then it's back to hardware.
Hubless USB OTG is added to the list.
Happy New Dragons Year Everyone!
I made some posts in riff box forums. I've visited jtag repair services and no one could help me. And i found that jtagers have no interest of flyer
Be more specific

What do you mean by that??
OTG without using a powered hub.

He means that he is adding it (eliminating need for powered hub) to his list of HW mods to be looked at.

Yes I want that.!!!!!!! Where is the 'How do'
PLEASE!!!!!!!
There is no how to, you can't do it. That's why he is investigating. The Flyer as designed supplies less than 80ma of power to the micro USB port, not even enough for most small thumb drives.
I just bought a att sgs2 on craigslist.. mint condition but the something is wrong with the usb connector in the phone.. I've tried a few different cables and they all work the same.. nothing when I plug them in but if I push the cable hard into the phone's usb connector it will work. So I need to replace it or just start using an external charger. Anyone have experience replacing one of these? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
The USB port is messed up u will need to replace that small part but only a expert or Samsung can repair that or u can just use an external charger

lol, good luck with that. You're going to need some pretty legit soldering skills, IIRC. You might be better off just replacing the mainboard.
If your phone is less than a year old you can get it replaced under warranty.
It is a fairly easy repair if you have basic repair skills (no soldering is required).
The charging port is part of a separate pcb/ribbon cable assembly, which you can obtain from several on-line sellers (sorry, but I cannot post any URL's).
Also, there are several videos on youtube that will show you exactly how to disassemble the i777 (and r&r the part).

Thanks for that info. I've been concerned about the sturdiness/longevity of the usb connector on this phone since the day I got it. I've always been very careful with it, but things happen y'know. This is good to know because, even though it's covered by warranty, when/if mine decides to go I know it will be on day 366 of my ownership.
GT-I9100, 4.1.2 stock. All of a sudden started getting this error when connecting USB cable to PC.
Note, I've been trying two different PCs (one with XP, one with Win7), different USB ports, different USB cable - same error. It charges perfectly fine with all these cables and port, but refuses to connect (Debugging on/off...you name it).
Any idea?
Thanks in advance.
OK......I think you have a faulty USB port (they DO wear out)......
Each connector in that port performs a different function. It is entirely possible that one of the connectors in your phones USB port is faulty (in your case, the data transfer connection) while the others remain functional. It is an easy and cheap part to replace.....
If you check my profile, you will see a guide I have written that explains exactly how to replace it.......
Actually.......here's the link to the guide.......

OK, let me understand something - so I need to disassemble the phone first to determine which version my board is, before I even order it, correct? In other words - no other way to determine which version/board I need to order...
Yes....afraid that is the case.....an authorised service centre would have to do it the same way (though they'd probably have every version of the board already in stock).....
This might be my S2, or it might be my W...but it's definitely CM
hey man,
i had exactly the same with my phone. replacing the usb port of the i9100 helped. i paid 20 € for a new original! one (i think you can get them a little bit cheaper, depends on your location). be careful not to buy fake usb ports from china.
i was afraid of disassembling too. but with the video guide it is simple and easy. the most "problem" i had, was to open the cover. do not force it, be gentle. it takes some time.
you will need a very small screwdriver. you do not need a original from ebay, just go to the next walmart or whatever you have and buy one :good:
merry xmas!
Yeah....most DIY chains will do those micro screwdrivers.....hell, they even sell them in my local £1 store.......(though i imagine they're probably only good for a single use lol)

Did you check your USB cable is working. Because, there are cheap/fake usb cables out there which can only be used for charging, sometimes charging also wont work

Yes. Checked several cables, including the original that came with the phone. All of them charge the phone (in two different computers) but not connecting the USB (again, in two different computers).
I think it started when I spring cleaned the inside of my desktop system unit and accidentally plugged the front usb 2.0 connector (my pc is very old) to the motherboard in reverse. I didn't recognize it until I tried charging my phone through the front usb but my phone didn't charged at all and it suddenly got very hot instead.
After that, my phone won't charge through wall or usb anymore. It only displays that the phone is charging but the battery percentage is not really increasing. I already tried replacing the battery and also tried using a different wall charger and it's still the same. For now, I've been using an external battery charger since it's my only choice and I can't afford to buy a new phone.
Can somebody help me identify what parts were damaged and I need to replace in order to fix the problem? Do I need to buy an entire board replacement just to fix this?
BTW, I'm using i9100 Intl.
Thanks in advance.
Replace USB board/port; quick/easy/cheap (<US$15) to do yourself. KeithRoss39 has a guide in General which will enable you to get it done; there's a link to it in Hopper8's Odin Troubleshooting guide stickied in General if you can't find it with a search.

Thanks for the response.
Are you sure it's only the USB board/port that I need to replace? btw, file transfer is perfectly working, charging is the only problem.
USB board malfunction has become a common fault with this phone (and to be honest, all Samsung phones). The board rarely dies completely all of a sudden, almost always shows a couple of faults but works OK in other ways.
Fairly sure this will fix your problem, and given how cheap it is, you might as well try it before you start spending serious money taking it to a service centre or local mobile repair shop. If that's not the problem, it's likely something else on the motherboard but as to exactly what, that's impossible to say without the phone in front of us.
Replace the USB board & see, given you've tried different batteries & charges, it points to the board/port.
The fact that your phone is functioning normally when you insert an externally (fully) charged battery would indicate that the problem isn't with the motherboard.
The USB charger/port board is connected to the motherboard and is pretty much the only part of the phone that separates the motherboard from the charger. As @MistahBungle says, everything points to that board being faulty, and replacing it really does cost pocket change and is something that is relatively easy to do.......
BTW....here is a link to the guide that mb mentioned....

Thank you. I'll give it a shot.
My wifes S2 will no longer take a charge. I have tried buying a new battery and tested a variety of cables and chargers, nothing has worked so i am thinknig i need to replace the usb port. I have watched a few guides on youtube and I am ok with the process of replacing the part. Iam posting to check the importance of revision/ part numbers, My wifes part is a GT-19100 REV 2.2 R.B74 Do i need to replace it with exactly the same part?
The guide you need is KeithRoss39's guide in General (not stickied; search for 'replacing USB charger board' or do an advanced search on his username). The definitive guide to doing this on here (and probably anywhere else), has the info you need and some.
