Hi guys,
I'm currently on a different country and I want to setup the APN for internet access, however everytime I hit save after typing everything, it doesn't save it. And if I modify the one I have for my original carrier (T-Mobile) it also dissapears. What could be wrong? Thanks!
Nevermind I made it work, but anyway I found out that if I change the MCC and/or the MNC numbers it won't save the APN, I don't know why.

Hi, sorry to bump a dead thread but I figured I'll not spam the same question again...
EDIT: I'm trying to add the "dun" keyword in the APN type
I have the same issue but more severe. I can't modify / change the T-Mobile APN to change the authentic type as it doesn't save it; no, I have changed the MCC or MNC.
This wouldn't be a problem if I can actually add a bloody new APN because it won't let me do that either
Do you or anyone know how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
I still can't save any settings, I tried to do what you are trying to do but it doesn't save it. The only thing that worked for me was downloading the internet settings and selecting the correct carrier. Later I figured that my carrier coverage is just crap for LTE where I live, so it is not the phone.
Still I don't know why is protected like this or why we can't add a new APN. Maybe rooting it will open it? I don't know.
My phone is on Lollipop and it did the same on KitKat.
Sorry, I wish I had an answer. Good luck!

I updated my APN to help with an MMS problem I am having, but it didn't work. Rolling back my changes didn't help either, so I had to reset my APN list back to default. (using the option in the APN list).
Now my phone won't even connect to the network (I'm on O2-UK), to make and receive calls.
I've tried a nandroid restore and still no luck. Any ideas?
Regards
Darren
Apn settings do not affect calls. Any either other changes you have made?

Figured it out. After ringing O2 to ask them about part of the APN setting, there call-centre TROLL then marked my phone as Stolen/Lost. I found this out by LiveChatting to one of their UK operative on the O2 website and he confirmed my phone was listed as Stolen or Lost and would rectify it straight away (after taking some important data from me).
Thanks anyway chaps, could we close the question now?

What a muppet!!! As long as your sorted now.
Edit your thread title to put [SOLVED] at the start of it, doesn't need closing down.

I've searched to the best of my ability and can't find much help. My problem is that when I'm any custom ROM (tried about 5 including CM7, CM9 and RootBox JB) I must manually switch APNs when I get a MMS message. So for example, if I receive a picture message, I have to go into my APN setting and manually select my MMS APN, then go back to my messaging app and hit download. Then once it downloads, I have to go back into my APN setting and switch back to my internet APN. On the stock ROM this was not the case. I have all the correct settings, I'm absolutely sure. I've tried editing the apns-conf.xml file to add my carriers settings. Tried flashing without the sim card in. Can't seem to get it to work. I'd really appreciate any help you guys can provide.

I assume you mean combine the two APN settings. I've tried that. All that does is leave me without internet or mms capabilities.
Seriously? what provider do you have? I'm guessing since you're in the USA judging by the american flag in your profile that you're on ATT or straight talk? Telling us what provider you have would help quite a bit..
Edit, I thought help me, help me I'm dying questions belong in the QnA forums?
Sorry, knew I was forgetting something. My carrier is Viaero. I live in the middle of nowhere in Colorado so its basically the only option. AT&T doesn't cover our area. And now this isn't an urgent issue, just something that kind of annoying. All I was looking for were some ideas on how to remedy the situation, so I thought general would be more appropriate.
Post both apns please
I've verified these with Viaero and with another SII running stock. also had an unlocked iPhone before which these worked with. Another side note, on custom roms if I put in the "APN TYPE" I get neither internet nor MMS. So I have to leave those blank to get it to work at all.

Hi this is an odd one, but here goes. I am on Solavei and have to manually set apns well recently after reflash, the apn setting for mms protocol is completely missing. Checked the factory tmobile apns and they don't show it either. I have no idea how this happened but it's driving me crazy. I've reset and flashed 3 different roms all with the same issue. Any ideas or input would be much appreciated. As a result of no mms protocol, I can no longer send or receive mms.
wow apparently I stumped everyone. Or my question isn't clear?
Search on the google for your settings and Than set manually or you may ask for help to your service provider,
They will guide you and teach you set manual settings..

lol I have done that. There is an entire field "mms protocol" missing from the apn settings on 3 roms that I've tried. i'm concerned that I somehow jacked something up during one of my flashes but I can't understand how it would affect all my installs unless they are from the same source.

lol what you guys aren't getting is I know all my settings. So slow down before you answer please. I know what my apn settings should be. I've done this before. The problem is that under apn settings in my phone, there is no longer a field for mms protocol. Without said field, I can't change the protocol to the correct setting and hence am not getting or sending mms.
Did you ever find a solution? I'm trying to enable MMS on my LG GTab and there are no MMS fields in the APN settings.

In your mobile networks find the APN names. If there is no explicit MMS section, there is a PROTOCOL section or something like it where you would add "mms" in the new APN you would create.
This page will give some basic insight, but might not need to be followed exactly--tailor to your needs.

lol at the previous poster doing exactly the same thing ... again. You guys, the problem isn't what setting to use OR where to use the setting. The problem is there is literally no place to put in the setting that you need. The field "MMS Protocol" is not there.... you simply cannot enter the information that you need to. It's obvious that it's in the APN settings where you can change all the other related fields. Funny how two years apart, people are not reading and spewing the same stuff...
Anyway, apologies for resurrecting this, yet again. I got a new phone recently and I am having the same issue. I'm looking for this field but it's not available. This was actually the most relevant thread that I've found after a bunch of searching. So, if anyone found a solution (for this or any other phone/tablet), please tell!

Maybe the rom's don't have that setting? Same thing if you create a new APN?
Correct, it is not in the default APN nor available when creating a new APN. Unfortunately, I am stuck with a phone that has no custom roms at the moment. The question is whether this setting is actually missing (not displayed) AND unsupported (not implemented) or whether it is simply missing (not displayed) in the rom. There seems to be very little online that I can find about this other than threads which mention that the "MMS protocol" should be x, y, z for the APN of a particular network. Basically, all my searches turn up nothing as to "why" this is missing and whether (or not) there is anything that can be done about it.

Carrier probably crippled the feature in their factory rom--which means it is available, but not displayed--they don't want anyone messing with it.
So all you gotta do is find how to edit the file in which that information is stored, and I bet it's really easy.
Good luck.

While I don't disagree with you that there is probably a file somewhere that deals with this...I disagree that it is easy. That is, it would be easy...if the information on how to do it and/or where to find it were actually easy to find
I also disagree that this is simply due to a carrier-based rom. First reason is that this phone is an international, factory unlocked phone and the rom comes directly from the manufacturer. While it's possible that manufacturers themselves don't want you to change this setting, that would explain the second problem I have. I have a slightly older phone with a custom rom which also doesn't have this setting. It's possible that phone doesn't support that setting anyhow...but I don't feel like buying a bunch of other phones just to look into this one thing.
Anyway... none of this stuff about *me* is actually even relevant. I think our discussion still doesn't help people find what they are looking for. So, let's leave it at that and maybe someone will stop by here sooner than later and know the answer (and then also post the answer) about if this is "unlockable" or it's permanently missing for whatever reason.

Then the factory was very lucky in locking in just precisely the APN you need in your country for your carrier. That doesn't sound like an unlocked international device to me.
See if there is a way to add a new APN specifically for MMS. MMS settings can be excluded from APN because they are meant to be in a separate APN.

Sorry...not sure I follow the relationship here... And unlocked phone is not attached to a carrier. I bought it unlocked, unattached to a carrier, and I am using it on a carrier here, without the need to unlock it. How exactly does that mean that the factory locked something on it...
Just because there is no "MMS protocol" setting in the APN settings doesn't mean my phone is completely gimped.

I created a new APN with just mms in the "APN type", saved, went back in to edit and see no difference in the available settings. On the APN selection screen, this particular APN did not have a "checkbox" on the right side, so it was different due to the APN type.

I'm glad you gave it a try.
Every carrier's APN's are different--a factory unlocked phone has to allow for changes to the APN and one can only assume, to the MMSC. Did you put the other APN settings in yourself?
Have you asked the factory or tried support from the manu?
What kind of phone do you have--Amaze 4G? Which region?
It's been years and I'm having the same issue, has anyone found the solution?
Edit: By years I mean this thread, not me having the issue.
I have a S7 Edge.
In the APN Settings, there seems to be everything except the option for MMS Protocol. :/
This is the first time I've seen someone with my exact problem...it appears no one has the answer yet? OP, did you ever figure it out?

Hi. I am having the same issue with my Lenovo 503LV. There is no MMS setting present in the menus.
so I am having APN issues after upgrading from 2.6.3 to 4.1.2 rooted. no data or mms, phone and txt works great. same provider.
galaxy s2 sch-r760 generic cdma, ACS provider here in alaska. apparently goes through gci?
now this is going to be a book, so grab a tasty beverage.
when i add the APN the mnc and mmc are not correct.
when i change them it discards the APN
i have no sim.
this thread did not help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715788
if i dont change those, it seems to communicate with my network as it fills in the mmsc field. but i get no internet.
if i enable then disable airplane mode it shows the 3g emblem, then it disappears.
I have all the correct APN info from my provider.
I have tried every way of changing the APN-conf.xml file but nothng has worked.
my thinking is that i need to change the default mnc and mmc that appear when i go to add the apn, to the correct values and then i will be able to save it.
however i cannot find that field in the systems. if someone know a trick i havent found in the last week of researching, please help.
could my phone be locked? if so how would i go about unlocking? could upgrading my software have changed my cdma settings??
i am fairly new to messing with android but i have some linux experience and am a quick learner.
Also if there is a custom rom or kernal or binary or what ever the operating system is called that might fix this issue and work on my device please let me know.
if someone does help i will pay a reward to them via pay pal, it wont be much but hey its better than nothing.
Hello,
I recently got my Palm Phone PVG100 from the US, i'm in the UK (and i absolutely love it!)
I have managed to root it and de-bloat it of Verizon stuff (despite not being overly techie - thanks for the fantastic “how to” guides).
There is 1 problem - i can’t change the APN, which means I can only get 2g / ‘E’ speed with my mobile data, though my SIM can do 3g and 4g. When i go into the APN settings, I can click on the ’+’ to add new APN, but then it’s all greyed out so I can’t actually add anything.
I’m in the UK, on an MNVO of Vodafone in case that makes a difference. Interestingly, when i tried a SIM from a different operator, the phone connected to 3G.
Is there any way to update the APN? Ideally, not too technical...
Thanks
Sam
Bump!
I have the same problem. If you Google "Android 8.1 edit APN" you'll find lots of solutions, but none of them worked for me even with root access.
Did you guys ever figure this out? I have the same problem. I'm trying to get a Tello SIM to work with an unlocked (formerly Verizon) Palm PVG100, but the APN settings are all greyed out. I can call and text, but zero data. If you found a solution to this, please post. Thanks.
EDIT: Forgot to mention. I found the solution. Did the rooting that they explain on this site, and I was then going to pull the APN conf file off the Palm with abd and then edit that, adding Tello, and then put it back, but .... the rooting had already freed up the APN interface (no longer greyed out), so I could just enter my APN info. Thanks much to the developer.

can you describe what you did in a little more detail? i have a pvg100 and mint mobile. its got 2 t-mobile apn with no data, i got it rooted with magisk but im confused what to do now iv tried 3 different ways that require root one changing the apn file with sqlite, hasnt worked for me even though i successfully replaced the file. i put the mint apn in there and took the t mobile out but it just reappears if im on wifi and spazzes if im not. i also downloaded a file this guy on here had thats supposed to fix apn and get rid of verizon logo but when i enter it in the terminal it says its not recognized as an internal external command or operable program or batch file. i havent figured something out about the path for adb or really how to use it yet smdh
Jeez, I did this so long ago, I don't remember any of the details. Not much of a tech guy, so I did a lot of googling. I did eventually get things going though through trial and error, and have been using the Palm for a couple of years on the Tello system (which I like a lot, by the way). Anyway, if you got it rooted with Magisk, then I think that was the major thing I had to do, because, as I wrote above, I didn't have to jump through the hoops I thought I'd have to to get the APN. Before rooting, I couldn't modify the APNs, but after rooting, I just went to Setup-> Network & Internet -> Mobile Network -> Advanced -> Access Point Names -> the "+" sign and I created a new one called "Tello", with values Name:Tello / APN:wholesale / MMSC: http://wholesale.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc / MCC:310 / MNC:240 / APN type: default, supl, mms / APN protocol:IPv4 / APN roaming protocol:IPv4 / APN enabled/disable: APN enabled.
I think I got those values through googling. Anyway, that got it up and going for phone, text, and data. Sorry I don't remember much else of what I changed, but I think it was mostly just rooting it and then finding the right values for the APN settings.
Good luck.
