Which Recovery? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Ok, now that I finally decided to root my Note 3, I have a few simple questions. 1) Which is the preferred recovery to use? Philz or TWRP? 2) What is Samsung and Sprints official position on rooted phones? I have heard some say they do not really care. But they may choose or not choose to service your phone is you run into issues, and need to have warranty service..

Twrp is good. Usually sprint doesn't care. When I take my phones in, I usually return the phone to stock unrooted.

[ROOT/UNROOT/Custom Recoveries/Kernels/Roms] AT&T Galaxy Note ONLY!/ No Flash Counter

[ROOT/UNROOT/Custom Recoveries/Kernels/Roms] AT&T Galaxy Note ONLY!/ No Flash Counter
THIS IS A GINGERBREAD ROOTING METHOD, FOR WHEN YOU FIRST GET THE PHONE OUT OF THE BOX, THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH NEW OFFICIAL ICS.
This method is for people that have a AT&TGalaxy Note only and want to have root in the stock rom without tripping the flash counter only, For everything else look at the bottom of the first post!!
If you want root to flash a custom rom/kernel/CWM and you don't care about the flash counter and the warranty then this is not for you.
Go here for other root! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
Now I went ahead and put the files together in one zip to make it simpler, it contains the root zip, the odin and the samsung usb drivers, all the files needed in one download .
DOWNLOAD: Big File: 532mb in size
http://goo.gl/aq2Wl
After the download follow this steps made by capite.
Extract Odin but don't launch it, run the samsung drivers for your phone on the PC and install it. Then plug in your phone to make sure it works -- it seems to take a while to get everything working. If you get an error, try rebooting and try again. Also, try using the cable that came with your phone -- 3d party cables don't always seem to work. If it still doesn't work, try another USB port.
1. Turn off your phone and uplug it. Take the battery out of your phone, put it back in, and hold the volume down button and power button at the same time. Keep them held down until the phone starts buzzing and you see the Samsung name.
2. At this point you are either in download mode or the phone will tell you to hit volume up, at which point you'll be ready.
3. Run Odin on your PC -- right click and choose "Run as Administrator" just to be safe.
4. Plug your phone into your PC.
5. In the Odin screen, wait until one of the top boxes turns yellow and displays some numbers.
6. UNCHECK all the boxes except for Auto Reboot.
7. Hit the PDA button and navigate to mashi's file that you unzipped.
8. Hit start
9. wait until your phone reboots.
10. If it didn't work, try rebooting and starting from scratch.
11. verify super user app now present. Update super user app (optional).
If you want to go back to unrooted, download this .tar file and flash thru odin! http://goo.gl/BBdow
Thanks to Da_G !
Flashing back to stock thru odin by using the stock tar in case of brick will increase the flash counter.
Enjoy and hit the thanks button if it helps you.

Since this is a System root, will it replace my Rogers ROM with AT&T ROM? I understand Rogers ROM has more features that are disabled on AT&T (NFC, Tethering, some apps).

This will change the Rom and give issues to any other Rom besides stock AT&T rom when making root permissions.
Sorry but I edited this post to inform the people that only scroll thru the first page only!
i used Da_G root

So I'm making this thread because the one made by mashi has a dead link and it says it will increase the flash counter when it doesn't.
So thanks to mashi and thanks to capite for his instructions, I'm just doing a clean thread to avoid the multiple question threads in the Q&A about anybody having root without the flash counter going up.
anyone that finds this steps by capite helpful , please hit his thanks button.

no nothing will reverse your counter yet, this will not increase it, sorry.

not to my knowledge, this shouldn't change anything but the root permissions, I didn't have to do anything after, not even a factory reset. this has the system.img.ext4 in it, I'm sorry but I don't know if it would change anything in your rom besides root permissions, I didn't create this file, just helping to provide it. .

i believe this method replaces the entire system partition so he will lose stuff like nfc. once cwm is working fully I'm sure someone will create a flashable zip that just adds root without replacing the whole partition.

Not sure how it's done, but the entire stock rom including nfc service 2.3.6 is still intact. There is nothing missing or unusable from the original LA1 rom. Also since there is no hard reset, user data isn't affected. Again, we need mashi or someone far smarter than me to tell us exactly how this works. All I know is that it does.

so I guess if you want cwm to work, you'll have to use Da_G's Kernel Root?

Why, you flash cwm thru Odin and cwm increases the flash counter so this method would be pointless if you're not worried about your flash counter, if you don't care about the flash counter then use DA_G method of rooting/overclock kernel, this method is just for the people that are concern about the flash counter and want to get root.

Yes you're replacing the stock recovery with a custom recovery, even when is available thru Rom manager as an official version of cwm, is still considered a custom recovery. Even the stock modified replacement recovery in here it will come up as custom when you flash it and will trip the flash counter if Im correct.

I assume this is doable via heimdall, correct? It looks like it's just a system image, which can be flashed with Heimdall.
Edit: Heimdall doesn't work on the Galaxy Note. Sad day.
When I follow the directions to root my device my entire computer freezes once I press start. This is happening when I try to root using Da_G's method or the method from this thread. All the help I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

No, this is a system root to be able to have root on the stock rom and avoid tripping the flash counter, if you flash a rom I'm pretty sure you will loose this root, but if you are planning on flashing a rom and the counter is not a concern then you need the perm-root in DA_G thread.

Oh, I thought this method would allow root and flashing of roms without tripping the counter. So there is no fix for the counter? I've read posts off people asking how to remove trips etc. So in a nut shell if you are planning on flashing roms at this time there is no fix for the counter so use the other root method?

These are VERY good apps guys and I happened to pay for them both and they pay for themselves pretty quick and he also offers free versions to members of this community but it's also great to donate to a GREAT dev so this is good news to hear for me! I'm ready to get to flashin!
EDIT: Please read this thread. If you don't know what these apps do or have never used them then you should probably stay away from them... These are just words of caution as Adam Outler's method of unlocking is FAR different than the usual method. Thanks

I've never used the above apps myself (I have a usb jig) but hear great things about them. Having said that I would caution anyone against being too excited for them and using/overusing them if at all possible. Straight from Outler's unlock thread:
"Conclusion
Congratulations, You're Unlocked. Your Galaxy Note 2 has gone from the most secure device on the market, to the least secure device publicly available. Your device will now accept any flash. Be careful and dont flash with Odin again. Stick to CWM zip packages so as to lower your risk."
You would only need to use TriangleAway if you flash anything with Odin and the above shows that you probably want to be extremely cautious using Odin if you use it at all. I'm sure many of us know the risks involved with using Odin but I had not seen any responses to the above and wanted to put this back out there.

I totally agree that you should definitely use caution while using these apps and they are not really for the noobs but if you need to take your phone back to Verizon for service then Triangle Away totally clears all of your flash counts and worked wonders for me when I had problems with my Samsung S3. Mobile Odin I did not use too much but I definitely don't flash things through Odin that I should not be flashing and like you said everyone should use caution! I didn't meant to sound like everyone should just run out and start flashin through Odin I just really like the ability to use certain features and both of the apps have great functionality when and IF needed... :good:
Conclusion: If you don't know what these apps do or have never heard of them then you probably should not use them...
Mobile Odin is mean for restoring your phone to stock if the USB port has stopped working. It isn't meant for casual flashing really, though it can be used that way, and I'm guessing people probably do use it that way. TriangleAway is another tool that is really only mean if you're looking to return your phone for warranty purposes and is one of the last things you would do before unrooting. Neither tool is something you use just for fun or because you're feeling bored. It is nice to get both of them though in case they are needed.

Mobile odin is more for developers that have to use odin files to flash. If you unlocked your bootloader then you shouldn't be using odin anymore because you'll have a custom recovery. You just flash zips. But if you didn't unlock yet and your still flashing odin files then you would be able to use this. Its basically there so you dont need a computer you can do it all on your phone and flash new ROMs.
Doin' big thangs from my Note Deuce

You can't use Mobile Odin without being rooted, so you can't use it to initially root your phone. Again, you shouldn't be using it at all unless you're restoring your phone to stock with a broken USB port. Also, the VZW Note 2 isn't on the supported list yet, so you shouldn't even be trying to do anything with Mobile Odin or TriangleAway right now.
Any word on when we will see Triangle Away for the Verizon Note 2?

[Q] Have root, can't boot into Clockworkmod Recovery, unsure how to install new ROM

Phone model: Verizon SCH-I545
Build JDQ39.I545VRUDMI1
Have already obtained root via this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487142
Here is the problem: I am using CWM to attempt to reboot into CWM Recovery but the phone will only boot into normal recovery.
1) Is there a way to fix/get around this problem? (I assume that once I install a new Rom this problem will no longer occur)
2) Odin seems to be an option to install a new ROM without CWM recovery, however 100% of the ROMs I want to install are ZIP, not TAR as Odin requires. (I am unsure I should unzip and tar a ROM and expect that to work in Odin?)
Thanks for your help!
You'll have to use Safestrap, it's the only way for your build.

So you are saying Odin is not an option? The only way to Flash a new ROM for my build is with Safestrap. Its very hard to tell by the thread if its safe to use, or even a real way to truly install a new ROM. By that I mean, I can't tell if Safestrap's method of installing a new ROM doesn't in fact replace the existing ROM, it just installs an alternate ROM to the side of the regular ROM?
This is disappointing enough that I may sell my S4 and stick with my Galaxy Nexus

Odin is not an option for installing custom ROMs. Since the bootloader is locked, the only things you can flash on your device using Odin are factory stock files. No custom recovery, no AOSP or CWM at the moment - only what's compatible with Safestrap.
Yes, it's safe. SS installs the new ROM in free space in your phone's internal storage, leaving the stock ROM intact for recovery. This should have been quite clear if you read the Safestrap description.

I continued reading and accept reality now - I think I was in denial! My mistake of letting the phone update is seriously frustrating. My hope was to have the Google Edition ROM installed, but SS doesn't allow this currently.
Sorry to hear that... if you want custom software you need to read before you buy, assumptions are a mofo.
i'm guessing we can't simply use odin and flash to a different software build

Just to warn you. If this locks your bootloader, its probably locked forever a la the S4 and N3. If you previously used a custom recovery, you will no longer have this option, likely ever again with this phone. In addition, getting Hashcode to develop SS for this phone is unlikely in my opinion because we've been unlocked for so long and the phone is over a year old. Many times users take root and unlocked bootloaders for granted, thinking that if they take the OTA, someone will figure out how to reunlock or reroot the phone, the former is HIGHLY unlikely. If you can wait a day, someone will likely post an unmodified flashable zip of the newest OTA that won't jeopardize your unlocked bootloader. If you truly don't care about losing this option for good, then by all means go ahead and odin the OTA, the PDA slot should do it.
So this is what I am pondering. I'm running cleanrom which is no longer supported; should I stick with 4.2 forever or take the 4.3 build from verizon ?

There are more than just those two options. You can stay on clean ROM til a rooted, stable OTA flashable is posted. Beans is working on that now I believe. That way you'll have the same experience that the OTA gives, but you'll retain the option to root or even flash a different ROM should you desire. Beans will also be updating his custom ROM build to my knowledge based on this new OTA.
How do I track this? I mean is there a thread that Bean post to that will indicate wehn this is ready ?

hey sorry if this has been posted before but im semi crunched on time and just wanted to get this out there so i could come back to an answer later i have a verizon s5 and im semi exprienced in flashing but my girlfriends s5 is sprint and i was wondering if its possible to root the newest version (OJ4) and are your bootloaders locked or unlocked? because ever since shes taken the new update her phones been running extremely laggy for some reason and i checked some stuff she has alot of space both on sd card and internal storage and ive cleared her cache multiple times (works for a little bit) both through the settings and the recovery boot and she says she factory reset it and the issue is still there so does anyone have any way to fix it or can i root it and downgrade it to an earlier firmware a thanks in advance and would that fix it do you think? thanks in advance

I cant vouch for sprint or verizon but you can root the tmobile S5 OJ4 by flashing hispasian kernel in twrp. this will trip knox and set SELinux to permissive.

Once knox is tripped it stays that way however it dont affect anything with the functionality or abilities of the phone. The Tmobile boot loader is not locked. I wouldnt count on kies or smartswitch working but i havnt used them so not sure. I do use my google account and all my stuff is restored with that.

Okay thanks for the info do you think it would affect her if she tried to sell it back to tmobile when it was time for her to upgrade or if she switched it in for another phone or anything like that?

knox is mostly for warranty purposes. If the phone is not in warranty then most likely not.

one last question is it possible her to downgrade before she takes that kernel? and once she takes the kernel is she rooted or will she have to download towelroot or autoroot?
You can always flash a full tar file to go back to whatever firmware you like. Flash away and if you have issues Odin back to the firmware of your preference.

Untick auto-reboot, then you have to hard boot into TWRP recovery (hold down home, vol+, and power) when the Odin bar is full on the PC screen and the phone screen. Then flash the supersu zip
