[Q] Help w/preventing 4.4.2 update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

The update downloaded itself overnight and I'm tired of looking at the notification. I'm currently away from home for work and have no access to a computer. Does anyone know the file directory where the update downloads to so I can just manually delete it? I'm on a galaxy s4 model SCH-I545, baseband I545VRUEMK2, kernel 3.4.0. I'm not the greatest at this so I'm sorry if I left out needed details.

The update zip is stored in /cache/fota/OTAPkg.zip
If you can freeze the SDM app it won't try to install it or re-download it.

Thanks, I cant boot to system thought. It goes straight to bootloader trying to dl/install.

Is it as simple as going into Titanium Backup and freezing the app SDM? I found it in there and froze it. I hope it was that easy!

Yup you can freeze FWupgrade too but sdm should be enough.

Wow. I have been putting up with that stupid update seems like a month, but I'm sure just a couple of weeks. I love TB. I bought it and use it one every single rooted device I have. Which is a lot! LOL!!!

[Q] Accidently deleted my stock clock

Hi everyone
As the title suggests i deleted my stock clock using sytemnapp remover. When i try to set an alarm using S-voice it says "sorry i couldnt save it"(i did click make backups but they are nowhere to be seen) I was hoping that someone here could help me out here. Im using a UK vodafone branded S3
Android version 4.1.2
build number JZ054K.I9300XXELL5
Vodafone Uk
If someone could help me out i would be so damn grateful. Thanks for your time
Steve
Are you running custom rom? If so reboot into recovery and restore your last backup which should return clock. Otherwise I would recommend you flash or reflash stock firmware, which should return all system apps, as this will probably unroot phone after flashing you will have to re root. Guides are available by searching xda or google it. Good luck

Hi there, this is how i fixed my alarm problem
firstly download the clock apk relavent to your phone, i think that there are 3 different ones provided in this thread.
Secondly you need to download something from the play store called "Rom toolbox pro" its £3 but if you ask in the forums here someone can probably point you to a free one that does the same thing.
make sure your phone is rooted, install and run Rom toolbox pro. click on Root Browser, navigate to where you put the APK on your phone, copy and move it to root/system/app. Once you have moved the apk find it in the app folder, click and hold it for a couple of seconds. A menu should popup with options, click on "permissions" set them so they are like this. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2pphiyo&s=6 If you are using a different app you will need to set your permissions accordingly, yet again im sure there is someone on here clever enough to help with that.
Now just restart your phone, the APK will run on boot.
These are the exact steps i followed and they worked for me as the pic demonstrates. http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2h353dl&s=6
I hope you have the same luck
Steve

Download this, protect root, download update, restore root. You should be okay.
anyone else having issues updating. It downloads the update and then after reboot it has the android with the gears moving and then it shows a brief android with a red triangle on top of him and then it just reboots back to 4.1.1.

If you want root I would play it safe.
verizon / samsung do follow xda and they have been patching holes within their devices. to be safe you should wait for dev to get this file and give you direction.
a day (maybe two) wait will not hurt you! if you jump, it could be month before you get root back.

Actually I was rooted by root66.zip and everything was fine until I got the update. Now My phone is bootlooping on note 2 logo. would not go to recovery at all. It will go to download mode though. Just warning people who are trying to update and have root66,zip flashed.

Does anyone have the SystemUI.apk by chance? I did the WiFi toggle hack and thought I backed up the file but no dice. I can't upgrade it keeps erroring out on SystemUI.apk.
Has anyone successfully used OTA Root keeper with this new update? I don't want to be the guinea pig! I've never used it for an OTA, just for temp hiding root.

Unrooted (OTA Root keep) and removed manually and via app safe strap. However the OTA 4.3 update will not take. No bloatware removed.
I was able to redownload and try to install in recovery to see failing reason. I now see error

I'll try to install the MI1 update again this time via ODIN. How can I flash to ensure it doesn't wipe the user/app storage partition and restore to stock? I don't want to fully unroot since OTA Rootkeep is the only way I can restore root in this 4.3.

I'll try it tonight. Is it OK If I just flash the OTA in Odin? I have a copy saved on my SD card.
Same boat here. Used Odin to go to stock MI1 and even did a factory reset. Update still fails every time.
Stock feature.xml
Can someone please post the stock feature.xml file? I think we've used apps to customize it which is affecting our 4.3 upgrade as they seem to be checking that file which they never did before.
Thanks

Rooting can be done using Saferoot and framaroot and others.
But be advised as said previously. . This will not allow you to have a custom recovery like TWRP, Philz or CWM and install custom roms! Unless it has a unlocked bootloader. As of now theres no simple friendly way to do this anymore. Only solution is to have mobiletechvideos downgrade your chip and send it out to them for a service fee. There highly recommended on here for doing this. Hopefully a fix will be released soon as many people are working on this.
Good luck

You got the answers on rooting, I would just add that yes after a period of time of you denying the update it will just do it on its own. In the future root and freeze the update program. In this case SDM 1.0

I'm still on 4.1.2, so I haven't had to use it yet, but this seems to be the method that a lot of other people are using to root their devices on 4.3.

After using Saferoot, I was able to root in less than 5 minutes.
The only problem now is that I have no idea why I want or need root at all. Are there any interesting apps that require root?

You can use titanium backup and restore apps. You can also download xposed framework and there are some random mods with that and you can also disable ads with ad blockers. Honestly that's pretty much all I use it for. I'm pretty upset this happened to me. eh. that didnt really matter.
i have a feeling the conflict with kingroot on oc1 was samsung's auto-updating SELinux stuff. no user intervention, it just runs in the background. although those updates make the samsung keyboard not exploitable. lol.
you have options: root, or have a secure phone. you can't have both.

LRX22C means nothing here (it just signifies 5.0.1, which is what most people are already running). It's what's at the tail end of the build number that counts - OF1. Reread the thread title, the OP and the linked article.

i'll try and sum it up
it was a security vulnerability discovered by jduck (Josh Drake) and, basically, someone can send you a malformed video through the MMS protocol and basically, malware would leak into your phone through that video message if it automatically downloaded.
the exploit specifically targets a system lib called "libstagefright.so" (clever name, eh?) and that library handles everything related to video playback. i think.
if you're not going to install of1, the best way to patch it right now would be to disable automatic downloading of mms messages through your messaging client. chompSMS has its own dealio with stagefright tho, and i've been using chomp for forever, so, yea.

well
if you took oc1 via ota, you could try to root using kingroot desktop, that seems to have mixed results.
if you have the nk4 bootloader, you can downgrade to nc5 and root that using towelroot (easiest method ever)
you can't downgrade to kitkat if you took oc1 via ota
Bren caught the update, but is still uploading it. Hopefully kingroot or something else will get root for others.

honestly, you could "fix" stagefright yourself by disabling automatic downloading of mms in your app
or if you use chomp, they already have their own fix in place
