I want to root it, get rid of the AT&T customizations, and upgrade it to a newer Android version. I am confused about the order in which I should do these things. Should I first upgrade OS, then root, then apply custom ROM, or should the order be different?

Before you upgrade anything run ExynosAbuse. It is by far the easiest way to root. Just be careful and read everything before you do anything. Do not patch the exploit only root. After you run the exploit follow the guides in the stickies to flash a kernel with CWM, and flash the ROM of your choosing.
Butchr's suggestion is exactly right if you want a custom rom like for instance SHOstock3.
If you would like to remain stock on the latest version but rooted, then flash UCLL6 stock plus root from the link in my signature. This is the latest official stock ICS 4.0.4, with root which will allow you to remove the AT&T bloat.
I would recommend you reading the very first link under creepy's signature.

Hmm I installed (using APK Installer) and ran Exynos Abuse 1.40. It said: "ERROR: It seems your device or firmware is not exploitable at all (hurrah!), this app can't do anything useful for you"
I double checked my phone, and all the specs I provided earlier are still the same. What am I doing wrong?
Not sure. I used the exploit myself. The only difference I see between your phone and mind is that when I ran the exploit I was on 4.0.3. Very strange. If that isn't working for you I have seen quite a few people having success with the frameroot method though I have seen some saying that it was only a temporary root.

Do you think I can try approach 3) (with Odin3) on this page?
Edit: it worked perfectly, except now wifi doesn't work (I turn it on, it tries to connect, in a few seconds finds no networks, and turns itself off). I assume it will get fixed later in the process. I now have Android version: 2.3.4, Baseband: I777UCKH7, Kernel 2.6.35.7, Build GINGERBREAD.UCKH7.
I believe you can get it sorted out as you continue. You seem to be doing a pretty good job of sorting out your issues. You can't go wrong following the links in Creepy's sig as long as you reed and comprehend what the instructions are telling you to do. You seem to have a pretty good grasp on things at this point. I believe you will sort your WiFi issue as you flash a kernel and then flash your rom. Happy flashing.

Flashing from 2.3.6 back to 2.3.4 always caused the wifi to fail. The fix is to perform a wipe data/factory reset in recovery. In fact, as you move forward you should know that anytime you change base, you need to perform a wipe data/factory reset, preferably before the flash.

Download Odin3, Downgrade it to 2.3.4, root it, install ANY ROM you want! Even if you are on GingerBread, you can still flash ICS or JB ROMs to it as long as its compatible with the SGH-i777. You can upgrade it to 4.0.3 ICS or even 4.1.2 JB and then root it, but you will not gain anything (or lose anything) if you just stay on 2.3.4 GB.

leo thank you. Do I understand correctly that the following two approaches result in precisely the same state of the phone:
1) Downgrade to 2.3.4, root it, flash a custom 4.1.2 ROM
2) Upgrade to 4.1.2, root it, flash a new custom 4.1.2 ROM

Yes, they will result in the same thing. I just figured it would be easier to downgrade to 2.3.4 instead of upgrading. Its a faster process to downgrade via Odin. Its a longer process to upgrade to 4.1.2 via Kies. If you want to try out 4.1.2 without officially being on it, I suggest the ROM SHOstock3. It looks exactly alike except for the Notification Bar, its not editable unlike in SHOstock3.
Before you flash a 4.1.2 ROM or ANY ROM for that matter, back it up in the CWM or TWRP Recovery Menu. Then you will have a backup of 2.3.4 of your phone incase something goes wrong.

You have an MDK phone which is the only Verizon one that allows for a custom recovery which then would allow you to install any ROM you want.
I highly suggest just installing a custom recovery using Flashify from play store then backing up your stock ROM then go take a peek at all your ROM options.
You may not think right now that you don't need or want that exploit that your phone has but it'd be silly to lose it.
You're able to flash any ROM you want... You'd be able to get Android 4.4.4 right now and even Android 5 when it comes out before Verizon even officially has it!

I just lost a phone and Asurian Insurance company just sent me a new Note 2 for Verizon (I605) with stock rom 4.3.
My question is is there a way to unlock this phone and load the custom rom ?
If there is could anyone send me a link and detail instructions how to do it?
I have heard if someone is on 4.3 they are stuck and there is no way out until someone comes up with a way.

Only way would be to send the phone to mobiletechvideos which cost.
There is also the option of safestrap which can be found under the development section. This doesn't unlock the bootloader, but let's you load some of the 4.3 based touchwiz roms. You have to root first before you can do that, and I have heard that saferoot works well. You also need to be on 4.3 mj9. There are 2 versions of 4.3 for this phone. If you are on the other version you can use Odin to flash the mj9 version.

I just ran saferoot and it worked really well and very easy way to root the phone. (Thx BluGuy)
Now what custome rom should I install? and I just use the Odin to load the custom rom just like before?
What about the Custom recovery?
Do I need to install safestrap as well?

First stay away from flashing roms in odin while on 4.3 mj9 you will brick your phone. Second you can flash any 4.3 rom over the stock rom with safestrap but!!! Make sure its a rom that can be flashed with safestrap no room for error here be sure, remember this boot loader is locked so no flashing roms in the other rom slots they still need debugging

I have had Hyperdrive RLS 18.1 installed on my wife's phone for several months. It is OK except it drops the 4G connection every couple days and requires a reboot to get it back. My wife is not happy so I think I want to just take the phone back to the latest stock rom available for the phone. Below is what I have right now. What is the best way to get back to to the latest stock ROM? Is there anything stock with less bloat (and rooted) that I can install with Safestrap? If not I could just go all the way back to stock, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of options for this phone (with Safestrap) anyway. I guess I could wait for Lollipop if that is going to come out soon. I am Rooted with Safestrap 3.72 installed.

If it were me I would just use Odin and a tar file. From there you could do the OTA updates and be just fine.

it might be worth noting that HyperDrive is currently at version 20. Upgrading it to the latest version is always a good way to squash bugs

Been trying out the mj9 roms and I like the ones I've used, but I want to know if there's a way to update this still awesome beast of a phone to nd7 or higher. I've downloaded the I605VRUFND7_I605VZWFND7_VZW.zip file from samroms, but it's still sitting untouched because I haven't seen anything definite.. I'm currently running Alliance build 26 mj9 version, but I also have build 30 nd7 version and Nephilim.STABLE.EMJ9.ROM.v8.0-FINAL-R3Ds.zip

Since your bootloader is locked (and the bootloader is unlockable on 4.3+), the only options I can think of for you would be to.... 1). either stay on 4.3 MJ9 with Safestrap and use 4.3 stock based roms - OR - 2). upgrade the phone to stock 4.4.2 and then root it with Ghettoroot and use Safestrap to run 4.4.2 stock based ROM's. (Due to having a locked bootloader-- you are forced to use stock based ROM's that use the stock kernel when using Safestrap). So, if your phone is on a 4.3 based bootloader - you have to stay with 4.3 based stock ROM's. Once you go to 4.4.2, you have to stay with 4.4.2 stock based ROM's.
My Note 2 is still on the 4.1.2 bootloader, so I haven't personally had to use Safestrap on the Note 2.... but I've read where others say that they've successfully used Safestrap on 4.4.2 after getting the phone rooted.
Personally, I prefer 4.3 to 4.4.2 on my Note 2. I could never find a 4.4.2 based ROM that didn't have some sort of bug that drove me crazy(ier). Either the bluetooth audio would stutter, I would get a lot of lagging with the UI, or would get poor battery life. However, many others report having good success with 4.4.2, so you might be happy with upgrading. I actually decided to come back to the 4.3/MJ9 based Jett ROM v. 3.0, as it does everything that I want in a ROM, works well with my Sony SW3 smartwatch, and runs very stable with great battery life. If you haven't tried out Jett ROM yet, you might want to give it a try (you can find it in the development forum).
Since your phone isn't activated - you obviously won't be getting OTA's, so you'll have to use ODIN if you want to upgrade. If you do decide to upgrade the phone to 4.4.2, you won't be able to return to 4.3 again due to the locked bootloader issue. Also.... if you upgrade 4.4.2, you may want to restore back to total stock 4.3 first and make sure it's wiped clean with a factory reset-- just to make sure nothing is leftover that could mess up the upgrade to 4.4.2.

Hey mattnmag, thanks for the info! It was a good read, and I didn't realize that if I upgraded to kit kat I wouldn't be able to downgrade back to jellybean if I didn't like it.. I've still got all the files I need except for the mj9 stock firmware, so I'll have to dl that before I get too crazy with this thing..
But I did dl the Jett ROM, and I'm gonna give that a run later tonight probably.. Just gotta get my backups onto the PC first just in case.. I hate doing full wipes though.. Because I'm lazy and don't like reinstalling everything lol..
What I'd really like it's too have my cyanogenmod back.. I had that on my old Droid RAZR and loved it..
