I've been so busy and just completely forgot how to mess with my phone since I have not needed with it for awhile, I'm pretty much lost now. Here's what I am currently running :
Jellybomb ver 2.0, freeza's 3.4.0 beastmode kernel, still on mj4 4.3.
Can someone provide me with step by step instructions on how to update to the current version. If possible, I want to keep my current setup, like my homescreen icon setup, apps, etc. Basically I want to keep my phone the way it is now, but just update it. If it's not possible, guess I'll just start over after the update. I feel like a noob all over, please bare with me.

You'll want to accept the ota updates, then find how to root note 3; thread in general, it's quick and easy. Just watch the video by qbking77.
Good luck

Well, there are very specific instructions on upgrading from MJ4 to NAB (or NC5). You can't just do a wipe in recovery and update. I have written up fool-proof instructions over in this thread, which I have copied below:
I just took the plunge and found it to be a relatively easy process. I followed the procedure I listed earlier, but still got the symlinks error, so I did a "TWRP Format" as suggested by derail412 and that fixed it. Overall, it took less than 1 hour to do everything. I'll outline my process below:
Detailed instructions on upgrading from a MJ4 (Jellybean) to NAB (KitKat) Rom.
Downloaded all files required. I will provide a link to the files. For all ODIN file flashing, I had "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" checked.
Backed up all "important" files off of the internal memory to the MicroSD card. Copied the fre3 Rom file to the MicroSD Card.
Use ODIN 3.07 "PDA" to flash the MJ4 Stock TAR file (filename: N900PVPUBMJ4_N900PSPTBMJ4_N900PVPUBMJ4_HOME.tar.md5). Took 5-10 minutes.
Once phone reboots, allow a few minutes for things to get settled. Reboot into Download Mode.
Use ODIN 3.07 "PDA" to flash the NAB Stock TAR file (filename: N900PVPUCNAB_N900PSPTCNAB_N900PVPUCNAB_HOME.tar.md5). Took 5-10 minutes.
Once phone reboots, allow a few minutes for things to get settled. Reboot into Download Mode.
*Optional Step* Use ODIN 3.07 "Bootloader" to flash the NAB Engineered Bootloader TAR file (filename: nabfirmware.tar). Took 1 minute.
Once phone reboots, allow a few minutes for things to get settled. Reboot into Download Mode.
Use ODIN 3.07 "PDA" to flash the TWRP 2.7.0.0 TAR file (filename: openrecovery-twrp-2.7.0.0-hltespr-4.4.img.tar). Took 1-2 minutes.
Once phone reboots, allow a few minutes for things to get settled. Reboot into Recovery Mode.
Made a TWRP Backup of the Stock NAB Rom, set backup location to the MicroSD Card. Took 5-10 minutes.
Did an "Advanced" Wipe on TWRP. Checked all options except MicroSD Card.
Once done, go back to "wipe" menu in TWRP. Choose "Format Data" and had to type in "yes" to wipe.
Rebooted to Recovery. Do not try to install SuperSu, since you have no ROM loaded yet.
Install the ROM in TWRP.
Rebooted to ROM and allowed a few minutes for everything to settle down.
Rebooted ROM to make sure everything is running fine.
All-in-all, took only about 45 minutes, but with writing this down, I'd say it took a total of 1 hour. Not too shabby.

The latest version is NC5, but if you just replace all of the above NAB files with NC5 ones, it'll work and you'll be on the most-recent version of the phone software.
If you want a bloatware-free ROM, I'd recommend using either of Freeza's Roms. If you want a more modded or themed one, there are tons on the Development Section.
As far as keeping everything the same as you have it now... I'd point you to Titanium Backup. With it you can backup and restore many of your settings and data when you upgrade. I'd just recommend not restoring too many system files (red ones), as they can mess things up.
Let me know if you have any more specific questions, I can hopefully answer anything you might need help on.

Got a s4 today, followed the root guide here, using mdk pre release kernel. Did not unlock the boot loader. Loaded hyperdrive and after loading everything did the reboot. left me at the black samsung screen with an unlocked padlock and custom underneath. i can get into recovery and download. but no matter what i do will not progress screens (even tried full cache, dalvic, system, and data wipe and reloaded Hyperdrive. same results)
Should i re flash back to stock and try the entire process over again? if so, links please
also, what did i do to soft brick my phone? for future avoidance
and whats the difference between mdk and me7?
You probably got a bad download of the rom. Its a good idea to verify the md5 after its been downloaded. Once you can get a good download of the rom you dont need to odin back you can flash the rom in recovery and youll be good to go. The me7 ota is the newest firmware, has a few nice changes but it also has a non exploitable boot loader so you cant run a custom recovery on it.

To clarify, your suggesting re downloading rls8, and try flashing that. Then, if that doesn't work, re flash the stock kernel (basically go through the Odin root guide again?)
Thanks!
Redownload rls8 verify the md5 checksum to make sure its not another bad download and then flash. As long as you can get into custom recovery of your choice and the download is good theres no reaaon it shouldnt work.

correct md5sum, same results.
both odin'd kernels have no effect, same boot problem. anyone know a fix?
Hopefully someone will. Same problem. Putting my phone back to stock rooted MDK works. The minute I try to flash Hyperdrive 8 and 8.1, it boots fine, then hangs on a restart.
Atleast, Will verizon exchange the phone seeing this?
Your mistake, why should Verizon replace something you caused.
Did you make a nandroid of the stock Rom prior to flashing?

and yet no one has yet been able to pinpoint what mistake i made in installing a rom i've used for 12 months (s3) and installing a new version on a new phone while following every instruction to the letter, suddenly ****s on me. so please, enlighten me, what mistake did i make?
You didn't make a mistake. Chances are, you just used the wrong recovery. I spent 7 hours last night trying to fix my phone. I factory reset this morning to the stock MDK and re-rooted and figured out how to use ADB to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery. It's difficult to get started and figure out how to install and use it, but there are resources out there that will help you figure it out. I reinstalled the new 8.1 Hyperdrive with CWM recovery and was delighted when the ROM actually rebooted without fuss. It did hang on the Custom unlock screen long enough to make me nervous though. Figure out ADB and add CWM. It will work.
Edit for your steps: Reinstall the stock MDK with Odin. Reroot as per the instructions in the MDK root thread. Instead of TWRP, use CWM Recovery (which isn't nearly as easy), then reinstall the latest Hyperdrive (or whatever you were trying to install).
No matter what I try, I can't seem to get Safestrap to funtion properly on my VZW GS4 MK2. I rooted my phone with Saferoot and installed Safestrap v3.71. I am able to boot into recovery fine but whenever I try to create a new ROM slot it never works. It doesn't matter which one I select, I am able to set the partition sizes for the data and cache and select create slot. It gets about half way done creating and then my phone reboots. I am able to immediately enter back into recovery after it reboots. I activate the ROM slot that was just created but it says the data and cache partitions are empty, also the text in the terminal reads "E: Unable to mount '/cache'. I thought that maybe my phone just doesn't have enough memory so I manually deleted things off my phone, to no avail. I uninstalled Safestrap and completely unrooted my phone and did a factory reset so I know I have plenty of space on my phone. I also get the same error message when attempting to do a nandroid backup through Safestrap. I've tried everything I can think of to get this to work so if anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.
Ive seen this error once before, and while I did find a fix, the user constantly had minor nagging issues as a result. Usually this is the last thing I recommend but to save you trouble I suggest you back up everything important to a pc and flash a full stock odin tar. If it fails flash with the pit file. Sorry I couldn't give better news lol.

Well that's unfortunate, I was hoping I had just overlooked a minor detail during the installation/setup lol. I will try that once I figure out how to flash a full stock odin tar, as I'm a noob lol. If you have a link to a thread that explains it clearly that would be appreciated, if not I can probably find one fairly easily. Any ideas as to why this is such a rare occurrance? I'm kinda puzzled that there has only been one other user with this error. Thanks for your help!

I'm back I have had time to totally rework the process. I have attached a PDF that contains the instructions as well as I link to all the files you will need.
All I ask if that if you have a problem with the process post or PM me if you dont think the instructions are clear enough please PM me so I can get it resolved first.
I have uploaded all the files that you will need and put them all in one place.
Added Screenshots of what to put in Odin!!!
Instead of using the rooted NC5 rom towards the end of the process, can I just use some other NC5 rom like HD16?
I haven't tested it yet with hd16. I would use the nc5 rooted and then make a backup in safestrap. So you can go back and forth.

Made my first error on the first step... Quick notes for first timers so far::
- push UP to get in to download mode
- ODIN will not recognize your com port until you do so.
- Make sure that re-partition IS checked when you're flashing the first PIT file(the image in the pdf shows it unchecked so that's what I did)
- Whoa, totally missed when the phone turned itself off to reboot and was stuck at the Verizon logo. Unplugged phone and pulled battery then powered and pressed up to get in to recovery to wipe data/factory reset
I'll keep updating this post as I make more mistakes lol
Down went to download mode for me and your right but the image was blank without files. Just to show the version.

Once you pit the pit file and the other files the repartition should be automatically checked. Also up should go to recovery.

Yep, I'm on 4.3 now, going through saferoot... I clicked 'yes' on accept but I don't see it doing anything. Been sitting here for about 5 min. Going to unplug and re-plug and start saferoot again. I have my phone connected as a camera as suggested.
edit:: That worked in about 2 seconds
Installed recovery with safestrap, now installing stock rooted NC5 rom.
flashing last file (csc), phone rebooted and installing something and went directly in to recovery now. Just hit reboot and that worked.
humm... stuck at the red verizon logo now... been on here for a few min.
Really dumb question... I don't see any option to select slots or anything like that. I know that I can't select any different slots but it just flat out wasn't an option to pick where to install the rom.
Edit:: Well... that was weird. I was stuck at the Verizon logo so I went back in to SS Recovery and flashed HD16 and that worked (made sure to flash SU before rebooting). Everything is working now.
THANK YOU!!!

worked like a charm thank you for putting this together! very appreciated.
my only comments would be the aroma installer things. i was familiar with safestrap and aroma and such but to some new android rom people might get mixed up with how to use safestrap and then get mixed up with aroma as well.
AWESOME!!!!!
ok I got the 32gb version and was worried this wouldn't work but sure enough it has and I'm back to jelly bean and my 32gbs all show up.:victory::laugh::good::cyclops:

I was rooted and all the fun stuff until I took the OTA. I used Odin and went back, used saferoot and just stayed rooted for a bit without putting a custom rom on. I didn't upload any roms. I was tired of getting the update notification and tried to get safestrap on to install a custom rom, but it wouldn't install. I then tried to use Odin to go back to stock and it will say "pass", but the phone is just the same it was before ODIN. I've tried even re-downloading all the programs, but it has no effect on the phone. No matter what I try, it doesn't effect the phone. It comes out the same way.

Your question makes no sense. What are you trying to accomplish?
My goal was to install a custom Rom (Trents).
I was rooted (with saferoot), I went to install safestrap, and that's when it all went bad. I lost root, so I tried to use Odin to format back to stock, it (odin) says it passes, but when it reboots, I am not rooted and nothing was formatted. All my screens are the same, no data is missing. It's like Odin can't re-format the phone.

Are you using 4.3 to Odin back? If not that is the first mistake.
Let us know, bc If you are using 4.3 to Odin back it sounds like your partitions might be a little messed up if Odin says "pass" but does not wipe the phone completely..
I am unsure if I bricked my Sprint Note 3, but I tried to roo it with Chain Fire and odin, using Qbking77's YouTube video as a guide. But after the root was complete, 60% of my apps were gone, I can't using any google powered apps, and I can't go into the phones settings. Everything force closes. Honestly, I'm just trying to do a proper root so I can use Cyanogen Mod. Can someone help me revert to before I rooted, and explain the process to get cyanogen?
I followed the instructions provided, and downloaded
SM-N900P (Sprint): CF-Auto-Root-hltespr-hltespr-smn900p.zip
Followed the further stated instructions, open odin, and I cannot insert the MD5 file into odin. I was able to before, and now I cannot. Earlier I was able to do so, and as stated above, after I did it several apps disappeared, google play services no longer works, supersu is on the phone, and I cannot access the phones settings. The only thing I can do is use the stock browser. I am asking what to do/what I did wrong/how to fix it/or how to continue. If these questions cant be answered, how do I revert back to stock?

The TWRP file in that post downloads as .img, and when I change it to .tar it becomes unusable and odin marks it as a fail. This has been the issue for me throughout this entire root process. People to me "Download this" and it either
1. Doesn't work
2. Gets to 100% extraction then fails
3. Odin wont let me insert the file.
I know its not me doing anything wrong. Right now, my phone boots to the sprint logo, and nothing past it. I can go into download mode and that's about it. I just need help and the proper instructions to either put it back to stock, or do a proper root. If you're not getting a boot then you need to restart.
1)Get the tar for nk4.
2)Odin the nk4 (but get to download mode by pulling the battery then boot to download mode).
3) After a successful odin of nk4, you should be official. If not, boot to recovery, wipe data, then odin again (battery pull)
4) If going to oc5, take the ota. Or go to next step.
5) after ota (or not) now we root. Provided you don't care about knox, the best way is to get the twrp img from their site. Flash that with odin (battery pull).
6) download a supersu.zip to flash from twrp, and flash it.
I can't link these files right now, but it's easy to find them. If you need links later, I can help in an hour or so.
And ota is over the air, when you get a notification for an update

5) after ota (or not) now we root. Provided you don't care about knox, the best way is to get the twrp img from their site. Flash that with odin (battery pull).
6) download a supersu.zip to flash from twrp, and flash it.
I can't link these files right now, but it's easy to find them. If you need links later, I can help in an hour or so.
And ota is over the air, when you get a notification for an update

Boot to recovery, wipe data, and try booting. If that didn't do out, wipe data again then pull battery, boot to download mode, and odin nk4 again. Those files are the ones I have used so...yeah...lol.

Well, if you have custom recovery and don't want ota, flash supersu.
If you want ota you gotta redo the nk4 steps and then take ota, but do not install twrp once you odin

Oc5 is lollipop. Major upgrade to Android. However, many things, like xposed, aren't working yet. Your call man.

Well, ota sounds like it will be helpful. And the version of Cyanogen I want required lollipop. So walk through me through I guess. Everything has gone well so far haha

Ha! It's all in learning man. That and finding downloads. If you decide you want ota, just re-odin nk4 (after a factory reset, and use battery pull for download mode), take the ota, re-odin twrp, reboot to twrp and flash supersu.zip. Pretty easy.
