What is build is your bootloader? Flash the corresponding non-hlos modem and see if that helps. If not then probably either try a different ROM or a No Wipe Odin image.

Yea what a nightmare it's been huh? Almost all the questions in q&a have been to do with the NC5 upgrade/downgrade/root deal and all the problems that come with it. Gotta say if I still had the fully locked down S4 and not this MDK one I probably would have just done what you did.... Wait and see.

I don't get it. I took the OTA, followed the directions to downgrade, root, then upgrade (and keep root), flash Hyperdrive 16 (then 16.1) and have had zero problems. Every step worked perfectly the first time.

I've been away a while. If I'm understanding correctly I can one click route my MK2 and install Samsung based ROMs without a custom recovery using mobile Odin. Can anyone please confirm it or correct me? If I'm right can you give me ideas what to look for in a ROM that will work with this method. Thanks and sorry if this has been asked. I did search but there wasn't much to look at in terms of direct solutions.

Personally, I've never heard of what you're describing. The only way I know of with MK2 is to root using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758.
After that, your only option for roms is Safestrap. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441. You will only be able to install TouchWiz 4.3 based roms. Make sure they're compatible with Safestrap before you install.
My advice would be to do a lot of research. This is a good place to start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501.
Good luck

This is the Verizon forum, not at&t. However I believe mobile odin is only useful for restoring the phone to a factory state without a computer, not flashing roms, yet you must be rooted. I could be wrong though.

safestrap has been around for years for other phones and recently hashcode ported to the S4 last fall. I have used it since that time with zero issues and have been running several ROMs at a time to evaluate, with again no issues with safestrap. Not sure why you wouldn't "trust it".....as it gives all us non-MDK owners ability to run something else than just stock.

Exactly, I've been hammering away on Safestrap since my RAZR and it's really safe just like the name implies. Granted I could flash AOSP on the razr, but my guess is at some point kexec will come around for the S4 as well. Too many really smart people working on that project for it to fail in my opinion.
Anyways.... For now Safestrap is awesome, and happy to have it.

So I've searched the ROM's thread, the safestrap thread, and the general forums. Like I said, I've seen multiple people ask about it, but no one has replied. While I appreciate expecting people to have done a forum search, I have done this. I know safestrap is a little bit different than a S4 MDK bootloader.
What I have seen is replies from people who have done the upgrade from scratch and clearing their ROM slots first. I'm sure this works fine. I'm asking about something a bit different.

The rom itself is very smooth no issues for me at all... I installed to a previously used slot via sstrap3.71 after clearing data cache etc. Are you wanting to know if you can lack of better terms dirty flash personally I just back up, wipe then istall.
My question is, I guess, if you can do the OTA upgrade in one step? Is that just a download of the ROM then u need to flash it yourself? Or does it simply upgrade to RLS13 and keep your data and work smoothly with that method. Most people it seems do a clean ROM install for the upgrade as opposed to OTA.

to me, this is the only way ever to install any ROM. Download to computer, verify MD5 of the DL and copy over to extsd card. Reduces the risk of a bad install........just saying, there are reasons some of us NEVER have an installation issue on any ROM
So I've been having this issue ever since I upgraded to kitkat. I'll be messing with my phone normally for all day and then once in awhile when I lock it and and go to pull it back out or unlock it, the phone is turn off. I know it shuts off because I have to hold the power button and all of a sudden the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen pops up like it usually does from boot up. This is really frustrating and I don't know why it keeps doing this. It's not usally a daily thing but I'll happen once every 3 to 4 days and sometimes happens twice a day. You're baseband version only represents the modem you're on. When people say they're "on MK2" or "on MDK" they mean the bootloader version. What method did you use to upgrade to 4.4? Are you on the leak, NC2 or the official update NC5?

Were you rooted or anything, or completely stock when you took the OTA? If you were completely stock, then the baseband should've updated to NC5 as well, so something went wrong with your update. Can you screenshot your about phone screen?
I wonder, if the modem didn't update with your OTA, then something might've went wrong with the boot.img/kernel as well, which is the most common culprit with this type of issue.
I'm going to say try a factory reset first and if the issue persists then you will need to use Odin to flash a fresh NC5 tar image.

Well I didn't realize on either updated it my baseband version changed from MK2 to NC5. So yeah it did change along with the OTA update. But see I DID have my phone rooted like 2 weeks before the OTA and decided I didn't want root on my S4 so I uninstalled, eveything. From SuperSU. To busybox. So when I took the update no I was not at the time rooted. But I'm thinking some old root filed are still on my phone causing it to do this random power off thing. So I don't know really what to do yet besides factory reset:C

Yeah, unfortunately that seems like the only option. You might want to wait for someone else to chime in with an idea, but personally I don't care about the data on my phone so I would factory reset.

Yea I'm with Josh in that I don't care about the data on my phone so when things like this pop up I can just either factory reset or use Odin. You can at least save all your important stuff to your PC or external sd first. Hard to say what's causing it really... If you were able to flash a new kernel I'd suggest that but that's not an option right now... Unless surge or someone can extract the 4.4 stock kernel to use with Odin.... Most likely Odin the full kit kat image though should definitely help worse case

If you can't get this to work then is it possible your device is faulty? Also, does it only happen with wifi at your home or elsewhere too?
I just got a new Verizon S4. I turned it on and went through the initial setup. I put my phone down and when I came back I found out that it was almost finished downloading a software update (vrufnc5). I didn't want to interrupt it cuz I heard that can mess things up.
Is there anyway to root the phone? Or somehow roll back to the previous build? I'm not worried about flashing ROMs, I just want root access. Would something like safe root work? I'm pretty sure I know that the answer to both these questions is no, but any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Surge has a thread in this forum about getting root on NC5. About half way down in the OP he has directions for downgrading to MK2. Downgrade, root, upgrade via Odin and SS. Follow the directions word for work and it'll only take about 20 mins (after the files download) Happy hacking!

I found a couple of his threads. Are you talking about this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
The instructions are a little daunting as I'm not the most advanced android user. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow. Can I ask you if I have any more questions about it? Thanks for the help.

That;s the one he's probably talking about.. but I didn't understand those instructions too much either. I used the method on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209 to get back down to mk2, root using saferoot, then followed surge's method with safestrap to bring it up to nc5 with root

Sure! I don't really mind getting PMs asking for help. If you have a lot of issues and Skype you can add me on there and I'd be happy to do a screen share and walk you through it. Let me know

Thanks I actually might take you up on that offer! I take it from your name that you're located in San Francisco?

I'll probably be trying this as well tonight. I took the OTA update to 4.4.2 NC5 and I guess we'll see what happens.
I can't stand not being rooted. I enjoy memory editing things in games too much and the SD card block annoys me so much.

I have no idea why I assumed that. I'm going to take a look at the instructions bangdosa linked to tonight and if they aren't any clearer to me, i will PM you. Thanks!

Never got a chance to get to it but Sunday morning I plan on doing it. I have nothing going on then. So in a few hours from now and I'll let you know.
Did you try it yet or putting it off still?

I'm going to try it today. Another user is supposed to help me through it but I'm not a hundred percent sure that he's going to come through.
Keep me updated. I checked out that thread that you linked to but I'm not really sure which directions you are referring to.

I did the downgrade! I used this video to help me out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZweIJrompdk&index=1&list=FLxv0tpwsgGZLKkTDHG1sC8A
After doing the second flash I did get stuck at the verizon splash screen then did the data reset/wipe which fixed the problem. So now I'm on 4.3.. Now, do I root the phone using safe root and then flash all the stuff to upgrade that Surge posted? Should I restore all of my data/apps or am I going to have to do a wipe when I upgrade back anyway?
