Hello!
First of all you need to unlock bootloader of your phone.
1.Then, flash custom kernel (probably this one from the rom's zip)
2.Reboot to recovery, do all 3 wipes and flash the rom. (Follow the instructions provided in thread you linked)
I think you don't have to update your phone to ICS before flashing.
Cheers

Cant you enter into flashmode????
Question
Need More details:
1)Locked or Unlocked Bootloader?
2)Which stock kernel you flashed? Downloaded from?
3)[If Locked Bootloader] Can you enter xrecovery? If can, make full wipe, clear cache partition, install new ROM via "install custom zip from SDcard.
4)[If Unlocked Bootloader] Try flash some custom Kernel for Unlocked bootloader like DooMKernel, see whether it reach recovery mode or not.
Sincerely,
whitefang
If can, pls kindly hit thanks button as an appreciation

Need Little Help

Hey guys,I own optimus one and I m used to rooting and stuff but my brother owns xperia mini pro so I need to install cyanogenmod (9 or10) whichever is stable.I had gone through various guides and stickies yet I want to be dead sure that I don't mess up my brothers handset. Its kinda new coz bootloader needs to be unlocked and also kernel image needed to be flashed separately unlike in optimus one.
Now I want help of you guys in the following manner like:-
1. My brothers mini pro is on ICS 4.1.B.0.587 and the rooting tutorial provided here for the said firmware
http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0 is not clear to me coz it says that first I need to install some kernel [only mini mentioned here] then next I need to flash another kernel according to firmware. Can someone explain what is being done in this and why rooting is so complicated in this.
2. Certain ROM's say that you need to flash kernel first using flashtool
My query is that all ROM's that I flashed till now on optimus one included kernel and I only needed to flash ROM zip through cwm.. So do I need to flash kernel everytime I flash ROM!! and isn't there flashable zip for kernel too!!
3. FXP ROM's do not contain things like what's working and what's not, it only has issue tracker so it become difficult for new comer to know the bugs in ROM. Can anyone tell me the least bugs cm9 & cm10 ROM and what are the bugs present.
4. Lastly, should I proceed like this!!
i. Root device (though method isn't clear to me)
ii. unlock bootloader
iii. install cwm (I guess I can do this using flashtool)
iv. backup current ROM along with kernel (for future use,I know its optional)
v. flash kernel using flashtool
vi. flash ROM through cwm.
I m a quick learner and I just need some guidance on this new device (double checking coz its my bro's device) . Looking forward for support. Thanks

You needn't root first if you want to unlock bl, just unlock bl and flash a custom kernel (in most custom kernels cwm is included).
Backup your rom and install the rom...
hmmm....
1. Unlock Bootloader........
2. Flash Custom Kernel (all custom kernel is per-rooted and have CWM).......
3. Boot into CWM and Flash CM9 or CM10 (factory format/wipe dalvik/cache).....
4. Boot into Fastboot And Flash FXP kernel for CM9 or CM10.....
xperia phones aren't like sammy, lg or htc where recovery is a separate partition from kernel. in fact, by default xperia phones doesn't even have "stock recovery" like on other phone. by that we integrate cwm in kernel ramdisk.
and to answer the question:
1- flash custom kernel mean't for your phone only, never ever flash kernel intended for other phone. and its done via fastboot and should be flashed before flashing rom.
2- like i said u can't compare xperia phone with other phone like sammy etc, its different. kernel must be flash via fastboot.
3- for cm10, bugs that i notice is slow accelerator, but fixable with some text editing, and non working front camera for lww and minipro.
4- should be like this, according to order:
- unlock bootloader.
- flash kernel via fastboot.
- boot into cwm.
- backup rom if u want.
- wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. don't wipe system partition or u will get error when flashing rom later.
- flash rom, and gapps if its cm/aokp/pa rom.
- profit :good:
thank you guys.... this made me clear...
one last thing :- which kernel should I flash on stock 4.1.B.0.587 which is pre rooted and have cwm after unlocking bootloader.I mean the one compatible with above firmware and also do I need to do anything with baseband or will it be compatible. After this m ready to enter the custom xperia world
Remember to backup your stock rom before unlocking the bootloader as everything will be wiped clear.

No, i just meant that backup up your contacts, messages, apps (can be done through astro file manager) etc, before unlocking your bootloader because unlocking will wipe your data.

Help needed--Custom ROMs, Bootloader??

hi everybody!
I need an help. Sorry for my bad english, I'm only 16 and I'm Italian.
I have an Xperia Mini, it's my first android phone, so I'm not very good at android modding! I downgraded it from ICS (Official) to Gingerbread (4.0.2.A.0.42 build) and I rooted it. Then I installed ClockWorkMod recovery. I don't have an unlocked bootloader, but I want to flash a custom ROM based on gingerbread. If I flash it, can I go back to stock rom with CWM's restore function? And If I can't, can I use flashtool to flash it (I have the .ftf file that I flashed for downgrading)?
Thanks very much.
Welcome to our forum
You can flash a gingerbread custom rom for locked bootloader with cwm, but be sure it is for locked bootloader!
If you take a backup in cwm, with backup/restore -> backup before you install the custom rom, you can restore this backup to go back to stock. Flashing the stock ftf will also work, you have to decide if you want to restore or flash, but if you take the backup in cwm it will backup the whole firmware with all apps etc :good:
Thanks! :good:
But do I need to flash a custom kernel? Or can I keep the stock kernel?

For locked bootloader custom roms it's the stock kernel :good:
For unlocked bootloader roms you need to flash a custom kernel, but this is only possible on unlocked bootloader

can I flash this ROM? And if my phone gets Briccked, can I repair it with CWM or it won't boot into recovery?

Normally it should work, but the problem is there's not specified if it is for locked or unlocked bootloader. It's stock based so it could work on locked, but it is recommend to flash a kernel. You could try it, but it could be you get a brick
When it's bricked, (mostly) you can't boot in recovery so you have to flash the stock rom with flashtool
Another little advice: If you install an ics custom rom on a gingerbread phone it could end in a brick. I had this when I was on locked bootloader, so I updated to ics (while keeping root, how to do this is in my rooting guide) and installed it again.
You can try an ics custom rom on your phone running gingerbread, just install it. But if it won't boot, flash the stock gingerbread rom and update it with root to ics
Ok. But before installing a rom, I have to do a full wipe, and wiping all will delete the CWM recovery?
I think I'll first upgrade to ICS officially. Can I use pc companion? or I have to flash the .ftf file of the stock 4.0.4 firmware with flashtool?

1.) make nandroid backup
2.) factory reset/wipe data
3.) wipe cache/partition
4.) format system
5.) wipe dalvik cache and battery stats.
6.) flash ROM
7.) flash supersu fix, there are lots of links out there just incase you have problems with root. this will solve your problem if u have locked BL
8.) if you lose CWM, you can use led deletes x-recovery tool to install cwm after you boot your rom
BUT TAKE NOTE THAT THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS YOU MUST DO IN "SOME" Custom ROMS like Hasa(flashing lockscreen after 1st boot)
MAKE SURE TO READ THE THREAD's INSTRUCTIONS FIRST
Ok i read all the guides...now I'll update to ics and root it. Then I'll install a custom rom.

[ROM][FW.13]STOCK> 4.1.B.1.13+ROOT+BUSYBOX+CWM-removed bloatware

Hello,
I present edited firmware from Vodafone DE.
Flashing Instructions: (need CWM)
0. Install full FW.13 Vodafone DE first (THX Petulinka1)
1. Copy downloaded MT15i_4.1.B.1.13.zip to SDcard
2. Flash custom kernel with cwm (Vengeance) or stock kernel .562 and do root and install cwm
3. Go to CMW and apply FULL WIPE (factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik-cache)
4. Advanced/Mounts and Storage/Format cache/data/system
5. Install zip from SDcard
6. Reboot
I removed bloatware from Vodafone DE, others apps I didn`t touch
ENJOY !!!
EDIT: You use kernels only based on fw.13, stock (you need root and cwm) or custom kernel (for unlocked BL), for example [KERNEL][ICS] Vengeance [NEO/L][1.32][18/02/13] (THX Rachit Rawat)
Sorry for my English...
●●● If you like my work, Hit Thanks ●●●
Thanks,
Going to test this as soon as i can.
Probably only by the weekend tho, little bussy
To test it is one good idea ,but How to do it is other thing.
This is only one flashable zip of the new firm.
So my question is Witch kernel to use ?I know it is ICS so any ICS based will be good, but is there stock .13 kernel to try on Neo.
Witch is the recommendet kernel from you?
Re: [ROM][FW.13]STOCK> 4.1.B.1.13+ROOT+BUSYBOX+CWM-removed bloatware
You use kernels only based on fw.13, stock (you need root and cwm) or custom kernel (for unlocked BL), etc. Vengeance 1.32 (included cwm)
Odoslané z Xperia U EDT-1 Odex
i install it to try but all i get is FC com.android.phone and keyboard FC .
I flash the kernel you offer.

You must install full FW.13 Vodafone DE first. I added instructions to the 1.post.
Why I need the zip file, what does it do?
The firmware is by Vodafone so I presume it removes the customizations (boot animation and so on) and not only bloatwares, it is exact ?
If you flash vodafone fw, just wipe and install zip. You'll get unbranded fw.... Or I didn't get what's going on....

Hmmm...there a lot of JB roms in development section...just download one of them and place it into your SD card....flash that roms using cwm but before that you need to flash custom kernel in-order to your phone to completely compatible with JB roms so make sure you have unlock your phone bootloader first....
there a lot of tutorial in general section on how to flash custom rom/custom kernel and unlock bootloader...you can start learning from those tutorial....
If you was made a nandroid backup you can try advanced restore and select system restore :good:

easy. (but van take time..-_-)
1. make sure u have unlocked bootloader (u can do this by sony official )
2. then flash ur device to newest official build (important it will also flas u latest baseband and so on so ur ''latest'' by sony) use this guide:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Software-Updates/GUIDE-How-to-Install-Jelly-Bean-ICS-Ice-Cream-Sandwich-and/td-p/154389 just flash only fw, no need to re-root..
3. then download a JB rom , i advice u Legacy Xperia 10.1 as it is pure, bugless. (u can try after other roms and see the ''diffrence'' )
4. place the rom. zip on sd. flash the kernel from inside zip!!! (IMPORTANT!)
after kernel flash go to cwm using vol down key and do a factory reset. afer this install rom, boot & done:victory:
