[Q] help with rogue app downloading & attempting install - files attached - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a SPH-L720 (G S4 Sprint) running sac's KK v3 and KT Kernel 4.19.2014
Recently, I started getting prompts to install apps, as if I had downloaded and attempted to open an apk file. I would hit cancel and they would pop back up a random amount of time later.
I found the apks in the internal sd card /opened directory and deleted them. This simply caused the apks to be redownloaded and more popups.
Malwarebytes doesn't find anything, and Lookout found something once which I removed but it made no difference (see screenshot).
I uploaded the /opened directory here and again here (more apks in the second link, I think it hadn't finished downloading in the first one).
It will prompt to install even if I don't load any apps, and similarly, I get a "failed to download" toast when I'm offline sometimes. Interestingly, I have enhancedtoast, but it doesn't list the app that the "failed to download" toast comes from.
I have Terminal Emulator, busybox, and OSMonitor. At this point, I wanted to try another ROM anyways but I want to find what's causing this first before I wipe. Especially if it's from a Play Store app (which I doubt, but you never know).
How do I find what is downloading to /opened amd then attempting to launch the .apks?
Thanks. =)
Edit: changed GDrive links to use shared version
Edit2: thought I should mention, j.cfg has the contents below. None of the other config files are plain text readable AFAIK.

Sorry,
Fixed
Edit: moved fixed links into OP
Edit2: updated OP with j.cfg

Hmm... Well, I would check your phones for any of these apps:
Developer - Wandou Labs
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Wandou+Labs
Developer - RageApp
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageapp.easyLock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageapp.stDataUsage
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageapp.sgapn
Developer - 9 Game (?)
http://www.coolapk.com/game/cn.ninegame.gamemanager
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ninegame.client4
Developer - Baidu or Hao123
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baidu.browser.inter
Long story short, it's from some Chinese developer and the app has too many permissions which you've granted to allow it to do this. Since you are rooted, I recommend something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569194 which will let you view what apps have which permissions.

Went through, don't have any of those apps installed. Do have a /baidu folder on the sd card, only contains 1 file,
.cuid
Containing
5d79fy0IS3/t3xr0EKSmfQ53Z+KB7I1NN8sWZp1WaYOO5VRjQVcrbjBHbYAXEDjD
And that's it. I got the permissions app you linked but haven't gone through it yet. Any specific permission I'm Looking for?

Super Bejeweled HD comes up a lot and it is associated with Baidu. If you open the log in a text editor and search for Baidu, you'll see the link in a couple of spots. Games like that are notorious for adware and such. It's also not in the Play Store any more, which kind of says something else about it...

I froze it with TiBu and deleted /opened - now to see if that was the culprit. I'll post back.

Compatibility with Android Market apps

I recently rooted my NT by this method. It's working great and I love it, but the Android Market shows a lot of apps as incompatible (for example, Pocket Frogs, Facebook for Android, etc).
Does anyone know a way to bypass these restrictions. I think it may have something to do with pixel density requirements?
I know you can get the apps with an android phone, and transfer them over. However, I do not have a phone. If there is another way, I would be interested in it too.
Have you tried using AppBrain to get Market apps to the NT?
I have an Android phone, so I haven't looked into this.
Write access?
I found this thread which discusses changing the pixel density to 160, but I don't know how to get write access to the /system/ folder.
Can anyone walk an inexperienced android user through the following steps:
1. Gaining write access to the /system/ folder (specifically the build.prop file)
2. Clear market data
Thank you.
EDIT: I figured out how to clear market data and cache, but still only have read access...
You need to be rooted and use a tool like Root Explorer to navigate to and open the file in r/w mode.
I changed my dpi settings to 160 and it did very little in the way of making more apps show up in the market. I've found that buying apps on another device and sideloading the apk to my NT works best with many otherwise incompatible apps.

Thanks. As I mentioned in the OP, I am rooted. I was using ES File Explorer, but it only had read access (is there a way to change this?).
Unfortunately I do not have any other android device to download with, and I would want to be able to update the apps without constantly sideloading.
Thanks for the reply.

Yes, as mentioned in various places in this thread. I have access to the android market on the device as well.
You must grand the file explorer root permissions.
For ES File Explorer: open, press options -> settings, scroll down to "Root settings" and check the box for "Root Explorer".
Maybe you should also change your Home Directory to "/" for easier navigation

Keep in mind, I've found that once you sideload an app, it then becomes available for updates on the Market the same as any other.
It seems the compatibility check only happens initially. Once you sideload, it's as though the market sees an app as: "Well, it's running on your device, so here's the update..."
There's a caveat: it's still possible that running an update will break a previous version that runs on the NT. I think that happened for some with the Facebook app update.
So far, I've had the market update several otherwise incompatible apps that I sideloaded with no ill effects.

Sorry. Just skimmed over the post. Download Root Explorer from the market. Navigate to the system folder. You'll notice a R/O gray box at the top of the folder. Click it. It because R/W. You can now change files.
Also, Facebook can be found in the NT Apps thread under "must have apps." You can also find a lot of apps here in the Android Apps forum. Once you install it, the Android Market will offer updates for it.
I usually google any apps I can't find on the market. You'd be surprised how many apps people store in sites like megaupload.

Does anyone know why, even with Root Explorer selected, we still can't get ES File Explorer to do a Search on the installed storage device?

Not sure... but begs the obvious question... IF you are rooted and have root explorer installed why not use root explorer to search as it finds everything I've looked for....

I sideloaded a few apps that were marked as unavailable (I found them via google search), but none of them show up in the market as apps I have. Are you sure that they will be available for updates this way? Did I do something wrong/forget to do something?
Thanks, and forgive the remedial questions.

What about apps that you have to pay for? If I want to get an app that costs money, I have no problem paying for it. However, if I can't sideload it (because I have no android phone), and I get it off of megaupload or something, will it tie it to my google account?
Can I get the app from another site but have it linked to my google account?

There is a distinct possibility that I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can do that.
Additionally, if you side load a paid app acquired in this fashion, you won't be able to install any updates to it that might be available in the market.

Again, I have no issue with paying for it. But if google's market doesn't allow me to get it, even though I know it will work on the NT (see Angry Birds, even though that is actually a free app), how am I supposed to get it? There are loads of apps that cost money I would like to get.
Google needs to have a box that you can check after the warning that comes up saying it isn't compatible, and you acknowledge it and want to buy it anyways.

[Workaround] Show only purchased apps in Google Play Store

The above posts both provide a workaround/partial solution. Here is my suggestion...
If you choose to try Old Market, when you launch it you can choose "old" or "new" market. It requires root permissions to work. After selecting which Market you would like, it will reboot the device and, once it is booted, the market you chose will be installed. Take note that I did in fact still see some free apps that weren't installed, but not all of them. Perhaps they were only the apps that were downloaded to this specific device/ROM.
That said, the "old" Market is indeed the very old V2 Market. I went back to "new" Market (V3), and it upgraded itself back to Google Play after a little while.
Unless you truly like the old interface of the Market, I'd recommend you go with CosmicDan's suggestion of logging in to Google Wallet and viewing your transaction history. This will give you a list of only the apps you have purchased. Unfortunately you can not install them to your device from there, but at least you can see only the apps you have purchased without seeing every app you have ever downloaded.
--- Original Post ---
Is there a way to view only one's purchased apps in the new Play Store? The new interface for the My Apps section does not seem to have a way to do this like it used to, instead showing seemingly every app one has ever downloaded, with purchased apps mixed in (in no logical order).

Big time bump on this! They really do need to add a tab that shows purchased not just installed and history.
Just ran across this. Hope there is a fix in the works. Not being able to sort the apps is a major FAIL.
I let my son have my old droid and he went crazy downloading what looks like every free app offered....my mistake for not creating a junk gmail account. Now I have literally hundreds and hundreds of apps listed in my app section of the play store.
Bump, I would like to know also
It appears that even the app management section of the Google Play website doesn't have this capability. On the positive side, the site looks great! -_-
This is just wrong, when you've bought allot of apps and downloaded plenty of free apps.
There's got to be an easier way to see what you've bought and redownload!
Someone got a clue?

This is such a fkn annoying issue. BUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The other thing is there should be a tab to multi select app installs so you aren't directed to the install screen and forced to start from the beginning of the main screen after you go back. If that is not an option at least add the ability to install "ALL" paid apps.
Why in the hell would we not get the option to see purchased apps only but we get the option to see "ALL" downloaded apps paid or unpaid. That's just fkn ridiculous
P.S. To anyone that is going to tell me to roll back or move previous apk versions to system/app or even use an app to do it for you and blah blah blah. I have tried everything.
The closest I got was using the apk I will attach for everyone here. Be sure to unzip it and move the file to your phone and use a file explorer to install it.

so I should be able to choose which market I want to use on the fly when I install this apk?
This has got to be one of google's biggest recent FAILS.

Not likely any time soon in my opinion. I'm quite positive that they knowingly made the decision to change (read remove) the list of only paid apps in the Play Store, in an effort to "improve" the app. Unfortunately.
.— Powered by Nexus —.
Another Google Fail just like the crappy resolution contact pictures that they refuse to fix. Thanks google for making have to make duplicate phone contacts and link everything. Also thank you for getting rid of showing only the paid apps.
Google has always been a piece of.. garbage, but as of late, they have just been, a piece of... junk..
Well, I do not think Google forgot to have that view. From their point of view it absolutely makes sense:
If you forget about an app you bought some day, you might end up buying another one, providing the same functionality later. And that is where they get money from, not you re-installing an already bought app.
It does not go too well with the "don't be evil" motto, but this was clearly a deliberate choice by Google.

The r2 works fine for me. I've put it to /system/app … I had to delete the app data to make it run again after a reboot, though.

How does the Google Play Store work with rooted devices - App compatibility, etc.

So, I purchased a Nook 16 GB tablet with the hopes of rooting it, and that proved to be very simple. Lots of great instructions from really smart people and all that. I am confused, however, on what apps are available in the Google Play Store and what ones aren't. It was my understanding that, once rooted and flashed ( I flashed CM7 using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1512373 ) I would be able to install apps from the store, and I can, but common apps like Kindle, Facebook, BofA, etc don't show up in searches and are unavailable for download. I have searched the forums and I can't find a good thread describing how that whole process works. Is it common for these apps to be unavailable or have I done something wrong? Do they need to be sideloaded, and if so, what's the point of having access to the Play Store? Any help or explanation is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

one of the many files the google play store uses to determine what types of apps a device can download and install is called build.prop
this file contains the properties of the device, such as device name, device model, kernel, os, etc...
you might have seen some threads regarding the modification of said file which has proved to work in some cases for getting certain apps to show up in the play store.
hope this answered your question...
I to recently got a nook tablet and flashed the same rom as you. The build .prop fix worked a little bit for me. I ended up trying to change the pixel density which was a big mistake. I had soft bricked my device and had to restore a stock b&n image. I finally settled with cm9 and am LOVING it except for a few bugs. On another note, I tried to install a baseball game from the play store only to be met with "sorry, your device is rooted. Please unroot and try again".

Ok, I thought this was it, but it appears it is more complicated than that. First, I did some digging here on the forums, and found this method that everybody seemed to have luck with. I followed it to the letter, but it didn't give me the access to apps in the store as it was supposed to. Next, I flashed the CM7 Beta that I I know I am able to access the full market with. I copied the build.prop file from that build to my SD card, flashed the ROM I want, and proceeded to replace the build.prop file with the one I put on my SD card. I went in, cleared the cache and data from the market app, rebooted and... nothing. Same restrictions as before. There must be something more to this than just the build.prop file that I am missing.

All kinds. All of my banking and financial apps, Facebook, Nook and Amazon readers, etc. I just want full access to the store, as if I bought a regular tablet rather than a Nook. Hell, maybe that's what I just should have done.

well i am running cm7 beta and apps like facebook twitter bank of america, etc show up just fine. its using the stock build.prop that comes with the beta as well...
so i am not too sure why your's doesn't work.
try flashing the cm7 beta but do the following:
wipe data, cache and dalvik caches before and after flashing the cm7 beta. that might be the reason why some apps don't show up. you might still have some residue data from your previous rom that wasn't wiped off...

I dont think the CM7 beta build comes with Gapps pre-installed. I've always installed them manually afterword.
Try using this zip! Thanks to Veronica for hosting!

right forgot to add that... without gapps no play store lol.
thought it was implied but yea.
Get superuser elite from google play. It has a way to hide root from apps that won't run on rooted devices, for example amazon video.

[Q] unique app store app issue, help please.

Hello everyone,
I received a UNIDEN 7" tablet as a gift. 512 ram, 1ghz cup.
This is running android 4.0.4
I am unable to get the google play app store application to install on this device.
Or just the android market itself.
Does anyone have ny idea as to the correct apk file to install so I can start downloading applications?
I have looked at every installed application and there is no app store installed at all.
I have been searching online and trying different things, I can not seem to find any answers and can not seem to fin an app store apk that works...
Thank you for the help y'all
You need to use one of the available app markets on the tablet. The Google play store is not compatible with the device. If you use your browser app, you should come to a Uniden device help menu. Their compatible app markets will under downloads, I believe.

Thats sad to hear google play is not compatible with the device.
You would think that because it is an "Android" tablet, that it would be able to run the google play app, if I can find where to get it.
I did find the app store selection icon, it was almost so well hidden that it almost did not exist. I have an app store that interfaces with google play market, but unfortunately I can't buy any apps, it does not interface with the google play purchase system. I can only download free & trial apps...fail
----------------
Now I'm just working on finding how to root this thing. I'm hoping a generic android 4.0.4 root will work, hopefully it won't be device specific...lol
I don't think there is a stable way to root those. I had mine for an hour before I took it back. I couldn't find any root methods or aftermarket firmware support for it. I quickly lost interest in looking any further when I couldn't find anything on cyanogenmod's forums or xda's.

If you are talking about a UTAB71 mine was rooted out of the box
I followed the directions here: the-digital-reader.com/2012/04/07/how-to-install-google-apps-gplay-etc-on-polaroi-pmid701
then installed superSU and ES File Explorer and removed the old market place apx and added the phonesky apk in /system/app
play store seems to be working, but i haven't purchased anything from it yet, free downloads work in either the new or old versions
Does it function any better?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
None of those things make the tablet work better overall, but following the directions from the link leave you with an older version of market that does not fully work.
Replacing that as I described seems to give a working current version. Still havent had need to buy something, but I did trigger installs from the play site and other than not waking the device automaticly that worked correctly as well.
For a $60 piece of hardware I don't think it does too bad. Lags here and there, but plays some of the games my older phones seem to choke on quite well.

I wasn't aware that I could have rooted it with the polaroid method. I'm much more used to messing around with phones, which as far as I know have to be rooted at a model specific level.

As I understand it the southern telecom distributed devices are basically rooted from the factory, you just have to get some tools on-board to make use of it.
I am not an expert by any means, just stuff I found through google.

nice that its rooted has anyone tried to install the 4.1 or 4.2 jelly bean updates to this i have not found anything about this yet
I can't seem to find any way to get to a recovery on the device so I haven't tried much more than I described other than normal non-root stuff.

how do I access the system directory again. It has been a while. I remember doing it on a couple phones but cant figure it out on this tab.I have supersu and root explorer but cant fin the system folder

ok I found how to access the vendor apk with root explorer but I cannot figure out how to replace the file with the phonesky apk
Mine didn't have a phonesky apk. I D/L the latest play apk I could find on here and renamed it before placing it in the directory then rebooted. If yours has one I believe you might have to rename it first but I don't know for certian.
If I remember correctly this only worked for me after installing the old market apk as described in the link I posted then uninstalling the old market from applications.

Every time I try its built in system update feature, it crashes and says system fail or whatever.
I found it is rooted with the root checker app and using terminal IDE and typing SU it shows the # sign...
I'm trying to make superuser work, it does not seem to "request superuser permissions" when a root required app runs, the app will crash.
Still working on getting this thing to work how we want it to work.
PS: If I can get it to run good and maybe overclock, I might either upgrade android and maybe even install Ubuntu as well, or just scrap all of it and install windows 8, havent decided and looking into it much other than it can be done with some tablets; as far as our tablets, idk. lol
i will try again later when I get some time. The old market does work just a bit buggy. do I just delete the market apk in the system apps and then past the new apk there uninstall market and reboot? I have tried this all exept rebooting before first opening play. when it installs new play opens and crashes. Not sure if I am replacing the file corectly as it has been a while since I have done anything like that. a recovery would be awesome. I wish I knew more about since I dont have to wory about breaking cause I can take it back still

I've given up on google play, I had it work a few times but it was so bugged up and laggy/crashing that it just wasn't worth it. I went and got a Mobile1Market app or whatever it is called...
I tried so many ways of making google play work, its unbelievable, I even tried modifying the akp file, which totally never worked except 1 time when it opened then nothing happened...
You would think that because its android, it should just work, but I guess that things are just too messed up for a reasonable sense of compatibility on android tablets...

You should take yours back to the store if it's giving you that many issues. I tried to manually add the play apk but it never opened, then I saw this thread and followed the directions in the third post and I now have the most current working version of Play.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000720
I was also able to overclock to 1.2 using SetCPU.
i found a good method to get playstore on. when i gwt a bit of time i will fin the links. it is easy and has step by step insructions. worked for me and evwn updated the store on its own. so i think it is a good way to do it since it will update... hopefully i can find the linka again. it is all gapps so you will have maps and other crap as well
as always use at own risk I am not responsible for damage etc etc....
here is the market link I used http : / / db.tt/qSnXMWyJ
" http : / / db.tt/SjwfVfUB is the link to root,u need to extract the files and u need to open it up after extracted and look for the "runme.bat" and double click it,look over what it is saying to you and when u are done doing all of the things u hit enter it will do its thing and it may reboot once or twice but when all done it will be rooted "
I don't think you need the second link. It is for root. This is not my work just sharing. It is from a forum on a klu lt7033 tablet. I needed to root it and install market and then I tried the manual install method that is included in the directions and it worked for the uniden as well. you will need root explorer or something along those lines. this has more than just market. don,t know if it is full gapps but includes about 19 apps. I would install them all and afterwords take out what you dont want. just remember after you place the files where they go do not install them just reboot then all should be there. I have only used the playstore and have not checked to see if the other apps run (maps, youtube, google talk......)
enjoy and good luck
I first uninstalled the garbage Amazon marketplace that kept freezing up from the get it go. I would suggest uninstalling any market app you are using before doing this.
1. Download this ZIP file to your computer.
2. Open the Zip file on your computer and copy the contents to a folder on your Polaroid/Uniden tablet via a USB cable. Then unplug your tablet.
3. Once you’ve done that, open the file manager on your tablet and go to the folder where you put the files. Try to install the following apps in this order (double click on the files in order to run them):
OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk
SetupWizard.apk
vending-3.1.3-signed.apk
As a 4th step you might want to press the home button, select the checkmark which says “open always with”, and then select Launcher. This will guarantee that whenever you press the home button you will see the home screen and not be prompted with a menu.

App market that doesn't use the Play Store?

Hey guys, Due to some bug or something my Play Store doesnt work (On both my phones & PC, It has to do with my Google Account country) I contacted Google and they told me nothing could be done about it.
I was wondering if any of you know of a good App Market that doesn't link to the Play Store? I tried GetJar, AppBrain & BAM but they all link to the Play Store page. (It always says "This item is not available in your country" unless Ive installed it before)
I also tried SlideME but it didn't even have some very known apps.
Thanks!
What phone and what country provider? If all the google apk's are in system/app its should not matter. There are some lines to reference market in build.prop also. check for these in system/app/ most countries are not blocked. If all else fails ill upload you amazon market and it should work for your google market replacement.

I have all of those (Except one of mine is called GoogleContactsSyncAdapter & GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter)
Im using a Nexus 4 with CM10.1 Nightly 20130212, The app store used to work fine until 3 days ago when it suddenly just stopped showing apps.
Everything works perfectly but it just doesnt display any apps, The only place (And apps) I can see are the ones in the All Apps tab in My Apps.
Using 3rd party market browsers I can see apps when & They take me to the Play Store page to download they always say "This item is not available in your country"
The Play Store also doesnt work on my other phone (I bought this Nexus 3 months ago) & On the PC. Using a VPN on the PC works though, Which leads me to believe it has to do with my country.
I live in Curacao (Netherlands Antilles) & Its in the list of Paid App Availability so that means it should work.
Something weird that I noticed is the new "Market Enabler stopped working" threads around here, Which leads me to believe Google changed something in their country checking & That screwed me over.
I contacted Google Support 2 days ago I explainign everyhting I did (Clear cache, Reflash, Reinstall Gapps, Change DPI, Etc) got this response:
Thanks for this valuable information. We really appreciate it, and it's because of people like you that we can improve the Google Play experience for all users.
We are currently aware of this problem with Android apps on Google Play and are trying to resolve it. This complex issue involves several areas of the Google Play Store app and is not an easy fix, so I don’t have a good estimate on how long it will take us to resolve it. As soon as I have any updates, I’ll be the first to let you know.
I really appreciate you taking the time to let us know about the details of your specific case; each time we hear more details, it helps us make a better solution. I hope that despite this, you will keep using the Google Play Store app and keep sending us valuable feedback when things don’t go as expected.
I’ll be sure to update you as soon as I have more information about this issue, but in the meantime, feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. I’ll be in touch!

Thanks, Ill try out the Amazon market!
How exactly do I go on about using MarketEnabler?
I just went into Airplane mode, Force Stopped & Cleared the data of the Download Manager, Google Services, Google Play Store & Google Services Framework, Rebooted (Still in plane mode), Changed provider to AT&T US, Rebooted (Still in plane mode), Turned off plane more & Tried Play Store.
Still got the same problem, Its tied to my IP I believe because not even the PC Webstore works (Unless through a VPN)
So amazon market doesn't work? I always use the Verizon set in enabler. I'll do my best to help you out. In the Dr.office about to get pins pulled out of my arm right now. I'll see what I can come up with and get back with you. I have a few other devs I'll ask for some additional support.

This is my daily carrier, Its got a Curacao SIM on it (From UTS).
I uploaded the build.prop as an attachment (Changed .prop to .txt otherwise it wouldent upload)
The build.prop does say "ro.product.locale.region=US", I went to the US almost specifically to buy this phone.
OK what i see is the google client missing, and your fingerprints reflected your country, here ive set it for sprint-us. Since i cant test for you, its up to you to try this out. here is your build.txt updated.when you make this a.prop and go to drop it in,be sure to rename old build.prop bak.prop first. then copy to system reboot twice wipe all cache and dalvik caches. all i changed was what needed to adjust to u.s sprint in google market.Hopefully this will fix it for you.please look over and see what changes ive made so if this works you can do it anytime you like. Always nandroid backup before making changes.

Nope, doesnt work. The phone just has a black screen after showing the Google logo when booting up.
Just incase this was my method:
1. Push your build.prop to the sdcard through ADB
2. Go into CM's file manager
3. Deleted build.prop from "/system" (Ofcourse, I backed it up first)
4. Pasted build.prop that I previously pushed to sdcard
5. Reboot
6. Wipe cache+Dalvik
7. Reboot
Kind of offtopic:
Something weird that I found is that going through the CM file manager the "/system" folder is full of folders & Build.prop is there.
To get to the sd card I have to go through "/storage/emulated/0/"...
When Im in TWRP's file manager, the "/system" folder (With no build.prop or any other files)only has "bin" folder (Empty) <-- I actually had to reflash CM to get the phone to work again since putting the old build.prop there didnt work.
To get to the sdcard I just go to "/sdcard"
Theres also alot more files on the main folder in CM's file manager (acct, config, firmware, etc.) than on TWRP's (TWRP only should a few of the folders/files that CM's filemanager does)
I cannot seem to find the "usual" files while on TWRP's file manager (Maybe theyre hidden?) but I can do so with CM's.
I can use both "/sdcard" & "/storage/emulated/0" on ADB to push files into it which means they are the same folder. (Unless if Im in TWRP, Then using "/storage/emulated/0" gives me an unrecognized error)
General question: Are important files hidden in TWRP's file manager? It seems to be inconsistent with CM's file manager

Same problem here, also in Curacao. Since December (around the 24th?) the playstore didn't work anymore on tablets but it still worked on the phones (I have an SGS / I9000). The tablets would get an error 'DF-DFERH-01' but with the phone it's different now - it seems to work but it doesn't show any (new) apps and it started a couple of days ago.
I have the same experience - even on the PC google play store isn't showing any apps but it works fine if you go through a VPN (try 'hidemyass.com').
As for the response from google - the response you got is the EXACT same response as is in the thread for the tablet problems since December, so don't hold your breath.
I'm really disappointed in Google here and considering going to the dark side (iphone or probably blackberry again). I've been waiting for 2 months now and no fixes, instead it's getting worse. Sony Tablet hasn't been working for two months now (play store).
With twrp you have to click mount then click system, data blah blah. Then use file manager and you'll see everything. Sorry I couldn't get you guys straight hopefully the Amazon market will do fine for you.
