Hey,
So I successfully rooted my galaxy s4 vruemk2 using saferoot. Then I did goomanager and tried installing a custom recovery. May have been twrp. Anyway, I tried rebooting into recovery and I get the downloading do not turn off target message. Red text at top left saying could not boot.
I tried following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
I downloaded both the No-Wipe and full wipe versions. And the PIT file. I started with using the full wipe version. I include the PIT file linked there. Odin hangs at setupconnection. So I wait 5 minutes then 10 then 15 and still stuck there. So I pull the battery, reboot into download/recovery and try again. This time using the No-Wipe version. It starts to show a progress bar on the phone but then fails citing a misssing PIT file. So I go through it again. This time using the PIT file. And what does it do? It hangs at setupconnection in Odin.
I go from Odin 3.09 to 3.07 and try both processes again. Same result. I uninstall the samsung usb drivers, reboot the computer and reinstall. Try it again. Still hangs at setupconnection. Same error with No-Wipe if I do not include the PIT file. I run both versions of Odin as administrator, they both still hang at the same step. Even after trying multiple USB ports on my computer.
I'm completely in awe as to why I am the only person this will not work for.
Any suggestions?

first mistake is you used goo manager and tried to load twrp.
you can't do this with mk2 phone (or any phone released after mdk)
there is a stickie in general forum that you should have read first thing in this S4 forum. I'm really not sure what to tell you now......

So yes. It appears that I followed the wrong guide to begin with. That's definitely on me. But putting that aside, should I just give up and say oh well, or is there any kind of helpful instruction that you can give me?

hopefully some one else can jump into this. I don't have any knowledge what to do at this point.
are your sure the odin tar file downloads are good? Did you verify the md5 checksum of the download?
did you follow this video?

It's the strangest thing now. Every time i attempt to download the files listed in the post, the checksum always comes back as something different then what the poster has on the page. This then of course fails in Odin. This whole situation keeps getting worse and worse. I've downloaded the same file 5 times so far, and each time the checksum is incorrect.
Should I be using some kind of download manager for a file like that? Would that make any difference?

Well I was able to finally get back into the phone and load another rom. Properly this time with Safestrap. However, upon going back through download mode to do anything associated with odin, it continues to get stuck on SetupConnection. I've disconnected all of my external harddrives and moved the usb cable in between at least 5 different usb slots, but it always yields the same result! Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the samsung usb drivers! Arghhh It's so maddening.
Odin just doesn't want to work for me whatsoever!

I got into a boot loop and could not stop it. I put it into download mode and tried to odin but the computer won't see the phone. I don't know what else to try. I used odin to go back to stock one time when I had froyo.
Please help!
If you can get into download mode then you're not bricked. Try either a different driver or a different USB cord.
I was able to get into Odin once more. It showed pass and the phone reset but it got stuck at the Vibrant screen. Does this have anything to do with the bootloaders since I was on ICS using Gingerbread bootloaders?
Also, I notice that once Odin starts, the progress bar on the phone goes very fast and finishes in about 3 seconds and the phone reboots. Odin shows passed. This is when it just stays on the Vibrant screen.

It shouldn't since you can us GB bootloaders with Froyo ROMs. Did you follow N00B's guide and use the stock 512 PIT and JFD tar files provided? I've seen a 513 PIT file that didn't do anything for me, so I'd stick with the 512 version.

Give N00B (and me ) if that helps at all.

What files are you using? The flash should take a little over a 1 minute or so since you're applying an approximately 200 meg file (stock file) to your phone.
Grab both those files (.pit and .tar) from N00B's guide and try it.

Followed the NOOB guide to the T my man. I'm using the 512 file. I've checked the MD5 checksum of all three files. Now I can get started and see the progress bar on the phone but hangs every time. First a bright green screen and now a blue screen. Odin shows stuck on modem.bin process.

Not trying to be a smarta$$ or anything but I would double check that you pulled out the bootloader.md5.tar from the PDA and put in the correct files to get back to JFD. I agree with Kaiser that is should take 1+ mins to full flash. Bootloader flashes are more like the time frame that you are talking about.
I also think that you may have a bad download if you are applying the correct files. Try the AIO Toolbox in the Dev section. It have the drivers, Odin 1.8 (I think) and the proper Pit/Tar files for JFD. Also the very last post Adamanda posted an earlier version of Odin that you could try too.

Wouldn't hurt to grab the files from Wood's guide, and make sure to use the new version of Odin.
I'm guessing since you already done an odin flash before you already did this, but maybe try re-installing the correct Windows drivers for the Vibrant:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
One thing to note on the drivers (I had to at least) is that you may need to disable Digital Signature Verification in Windows. Get to the Windows Safe Mode Screen (while booting windows, keep pressing F8), then select Disable Digital Signature Verification. Windows can block the drivers otherwise.
Something else would be putting the PIT and TAR files in the same directory you have the Odin executable. Not sure if you still have to, but it was recommended way back when and I still do it to this day whenever I go back to stock.
A last ditch would be running Odin as an administrator, but you really shouldn't have to do that.
All the files have been verified and I click on the pit button and choose the pit file downloaded and then click on PDA and choose the appropiate 512 TAR file. I click start and get into the process. It just hangs at different points all the time. This last time it made it to factoryfs.rfs process and my phone got a blue screen. I'm gonna give a different version of Odin a try.
Kind of sucks but I have heard of this before. Only thing that I can recall is that the user just kept trying to get it to pass and he maybe did it 8 times before it got all the way through. His was like yours and it would hang on different parts in the process here and there. I'll see if I can find that thread and link it for you.

Should I try clicking the dump box, phone EFS clear box or phone bottloader box? Or will this erase my files?
Looks like you might have a bad download. Try to Toolbox I listed above. Much better than piece-mealing files together. Nice all-in-one package.
Here is that thread btw about being stuck at points in Odin.

NO!!! Don't clear your EFS. Will kill your ability to call or get/send data. Will lose your IMIE and you'll be forced to Odin anyways.

Odin/Download Mode doesn't use USB Debugging, only Mass Storage/MTP uses that.
Download the Toolbox and the .Net files (if you don't already have it-most PCs do nowdays). Install it, Open and hit Flash to Stock. It will open the included version of Odin, browse for the files it comes with re: the Pit and Tar/PDA files and hit Run like you do in regular everyday Odin.

This is a dumb suggestion, but just trying to get the simple stuff out of the way. You're unzipping the 512 pit and only selecting the .pit file for PIT part of Odin, right? I don't think Odin will let you select another file type anyway, but just checking... And the bigger .tar file that you'd get just stays as a .tar when you select it for PDA.
All 3 of those boxes for Odin should be checked (partition, reset, and whatever the other one is).
I've really only had Odin hang on me when I didn't have the drivers installed, when I needed to do the Digital Signature step, and when I was trying to use an older version so here's hoping a few retries work. Like I said earlier, for ****s and giggles run Odin as an Administrator too.

Yea I checked all that. I think the first time I used an unzipped file for the .tar. That's why it finished so quick. I was supposed to use the .tar file without unzipping. This is probably what f-ed everything up.
I'm still trying to bring it back to life. Still get into download mode but nothing else. Not even Vibrant screen anymore!
Ok. I've tried 3 different versions of Odin, downloaded both the pit and tar files several times, and tried with odin flashable roms like bionixfishmanmod and The process still hangs at factoryfs.rfs.
Does anyone have any other tricks to try? I'm all out of ideas.
And every time Odin hangs, The screen on my phone changes from the download screen to a full screen of a random color at which point I have to reset into download mode and start the process over again. I've gone through the process over 100 times now.
Did you install the device drivers and disable the digital signatures in Windows that I mentioned before?
You could also try other USB ports if you haven't.
I had tried to root a friends I605 or Verizon Note II yesterday and about 3/4 of the way through Casual's one click method on the VramC3 4.1.2 version it failed. This left my phone in download mode and upon removal of battery and reinsertion, the phone just went into a boot loop. This is an error that is known to Casual and is being worked on, same error can occur if you use the wrong version on the wrong software version. This can just be resolved by flashing the pit only file the schI605-16gb.pit which you can find on this forum, in Odin. Just use Odin to flash this file alone in the PIT section not the pda or phone section. Your phone will boot and work correctly. If you discover you have the corret Casual package just retry the process, it worked for me the second time.
Thank you very much for your post. Much appreciated and know this will help out others. I'll add this to the FAQ board.

No problem guys, I know how frustrating it was for me to sit for hours trying to figure out what was wrong, not even being able to flash stock to it. It failed for me right as it was pushing files. I know it failed for several people in older versions, not VRAMC3, at the recovery flash portion of it. I finally took one piece of the alternate flash method, which was to flash both pit and stock firmware, but after that didn't work I instead just flashed the pit. Worked flawlessly.

Alright guys as my title states I pulled a "noob move" and it looks like I've soft bricked my phone (It won't boot past the verizon splash screen). I've done a little research and I'm pretty familiar with Odin and how it works. Seems to be the same concept as jungle flasher and I've modded a few 360's in my time. I've tried, to no avail, to flash my phone back with the stock image numerous times and I figured it was time to consult the experts. What I've done so far: Downloaded the factory stock restore TAR from Rwilco12's site and put that in the PDA file browser of Odin. My phone shows up in Odin when connected in download mode with a light blue com:4 box. I read sometimes this is supposed to be yellow? Other versions of Odin it is yellow. This instance was attempted in 3.07. 1.85 it shows up as yellow. Regardless of either version, they both fail after the "aboot" step. I've tried two computers and have failed miserably all morning. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Excellent! No problem
NEED some help here. I have a Galaxy S4 (Verizon)phone that I have Rooted successfully and the phone was running fine. I then decided to remove some of the bloatware that was on the phone and now I keep getting a message that com.process.gapps has stopped working consistently and Google play store no longer is working. It just starts to open and the closes. I have searched and many threads on how to fix it to no avail. I have tried going into settings-app manager, and force closed, disable/enable, delete cache and data. removed google account from phone then added, tried re install the gapps zip, still nothing. The back up was done using titanium backup pro and I still got the same message. So tried a factory reset three times and nothing. Unfortunately, when I did the first factory reset, I didn't save a backup(was thinking) and Titanium Backup and root file manager and stock file manager all was deleted so now I have no access to the system files either. I can't re-install from the play store because it keeps crashing. I tried using CWM and install recovering with odin 3.07 but it to then hangs on my computer. Please help what am I doing wrong. You CANNOT have a custom recovery like CWM if you are on ME7. Sounds like you need to flash back to stock factory ME7
I tried to no prevail. Factory reset erased titanium backup, root file explores, and other apps needed to complete flash, and with Play store not loading and handing on me, so I can get to root files. I can't download. I can't even download from chrome browser it hangs soon as download
I know you tried to factory reset but you need to flash a stock ME7 image using Odin. You need to put your phone in Download mode and then use Odin to flash a stock ME7 image on to it.
Check this guide out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259

I know you tried to factory reset but you need to flash a stock ME7 image using Odin. You need to put your phone in Download mode and then use Odin to flash a stock ME7 image on to it.

I tried to use ODIN3 v3.09 and it keeps crashing when I press the start key. I have tried v.185, v3.07. and v3.09 and they all hang as soon as I press start. I have installed the samsung drivers. I did notice that the com port is yellow on v1.8.5 and blue on v3.07 and v3.09. Any item what could be the problem
Can you list step by step what you're doing? I have a feeling that something's getting missed.

4th opened Odin and com port highlighted in blue
5th placed factory image in pda section
6th pressed start and it starts process the suddenly it encounters a problem and closes. This has happened with every Odin version I have tried. ( (I did notice that on Odin v1.85 the com was highlighted in yellow instead of blue like with v3.07 or 3.09.

Wow that all sounds strange. Are you positive you have the stock ME7 file? ODIN would crash if I tried flashing the wrong one. Are you running ODIN as Admin?

SAVE ME

Hindsight being 20/20, you should have frozen the apps instead of deleting. Deleting them yields you no benefit beyond freezing and can lead to issues such as this.

So after checking to make sure I was flashing the correct file I found out that when I originally extracted the file it didn't extract completely only as a part.file for some reason. After downloading the zip file and extracting the file again, making sure it was a tar.md5 file and tried again with success. I able to open Google Play store. I also re-rooted my phone again successfully. SO thanks to everyone that help me out:laugh::laugh:

Awesome glad it worked out for you!
I've searched the forums and haven't found a solution to my problem. I have rooted S4 MK2 and wanted to put Gummy ROM on it, only finding out after I had installed TWRP that this wouldn't be possible. No big deal, but now, I can't get away from the stupid downloading screen for TWRP. No longer do I get the screen before it warning about tinkering with your operating system, and once it's stuck on the screen, getting the phone to boot properly sometimes takes a while, and a lot of foul language. I've tried several things to bypass/delete/overwrite TWRP, to no avail. ODIN doesn't work for me, tried several versions, ROM Manager and CWM doesn't work, when I try to boot into CWM mode it goes to downloading screen of TWRP. I finally gave up, decided to nuke it from space and do a factory reset... which took me straight to the damnedable downloading screen! This tells me I will probably be unable to update or use any ASOP ROMs that I might run into, because once on the downloading screen, nothing works, the phone isn't recognized by my computer, two different versions of ODIN failed to get its attention, unable to to load .pit or .tar files... I'm at wits end folks, and haven't found a solution in any other threads on xda, or the net in general, any help and suggestions would be much appreciated. I've not used ADB before, but if need be, I'll learn if there's a fix going that route.

Does Odin "see" your phone? If so, what build are you trying to install?
I know the damage is done, but a little reading before hand would have let you know that with MK2 you can't install a custom recovery. Only Safestrap works with compatible Touchwiz 4.3 Roms
Edit: Maybe this thread will help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
Edit #2: My apologies. Just re-read your post and I see you said, more than once, that Odin isn't seeing your phone. I'm afraid I won't be any help. Good luck.
Odin sees the phone, but fails at all attempts to install anything. .pit, .tar etc. I originally wanted to install Gummy but now I know that won't ever work, then I just tried to install stock .tar file and it also fails.

If you had taken 5 minutes of time to research...you wouldn't have bricked your phone...Countless threads on this very thing.

What exactly are you trying to install with Odin?
no bricking, just, let's say a small pebble.

My most recent attempt was SCH-I545.pit, didn't work... I also tried Philz_Touch, gummy, and one other ROM which, of course didn't work, now I know why the roms didn't, but no sure why the .pit file won't work. All I really want to do now is remove all traces of TWRP. My phone isn't bricked, totally usable, it just won't be able to be updated or customized until I get rid of TWRP

It looks to me like your only option is to Odin back to stock MK2. Did you check out the link I gave you in my first post?

I'm reading over it now, considering doing the full wipe. Now that I know custom ROMS are going to be limited to ASOP I don't mind going stock and unrooted. I really appreciate your help

If you get it straightened out I would recommend reading this thread after. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501
Let me know how you make out. Good luck.
From reading this I think you're confusing TWRP with Odin. TWRP doesnt have a downloading screen, but Odin does and thats exactly the screen you want to be on to flash a stock Odin tar. You will need to flash a full stock tar. And if you respond saying it didnt work please include the Odin error log.

You making sure you have the proper USB drivers as well as a good USB cable?
Also like surge said its kind of confusing I think you're confusing Odin with twrp as well at times.
So now your trying to load which file from within Odin???

Got everything working, I'm all stock and all systems are go. Thank you very much for your kind help. I'm going to now patiently wait for the official 4.4 update to arrive and otherwise leave my phone stock.
